Papa’s World – memories from the past – part one.

Next to the last time, I visited him for the Winter – my older brother Roger and Sherry.

Rog was ten years older than me – my sister Donna was fifteen years older.

Toward his last years of life – we would spend six weeks with him – end of January to mid-March.

We were retired then as he was by himself – his wife had passed away.

He lived in The Villages and really wanted us to move in with him.

But – we could not just leave all the grandchildren.

Those last five years were memories I shall cherish – golfing – riding the golf cart trails –

Happy hours with him – just hanging out.

Yep – I know all about this! LOL
Sherry and the twins – Taylor and little Cassidy sound asleep!

Before we moved and ten years’ worth of bonding – we were there for them as they grew up.

Fraternal twins – Taylor will be exceptionally tall – like Sherry her MORMOR –

Swedish for MOTHERSMOTHER!

Cassidy is normal for her age group.

She is the one who ZOOMS her MORMOR weekly or calls her.

She knows what days we will be home and how long.

Taylor is our budding horse rider – and has been for four years!

Cherished memories are always with us.

Tammy and Sherry after running their 5K.

They both are runners as is Debby! They have all run the Washington DC. Cherry Blossom

ten milers! Finishing crossing the line hand in hand – all three of them!

Memories of mother and daughters bonding!

Thanks for reading – more blogs and old memories to come!

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – our very first Christmas Holidays in the new house – lights – and tree.

View from the street – just a few wreathes – garland and small lighted- decorated tree on the front porch.

Sherry wanted to keep it simple this year – I have all the decorations stored over the garage.

So – she climbed up there for the very first time ( she is not good with heights or ladders)

And was surprised how I had organized all the big plastic tubs of decorations.

I had put down a rug and lined everything stacked up all around it!

Easy to get to and open up!

My favorite spot to sit and sip my first cup of coffee for the day!

Keeping it simple – all the lights are on timers and batteries!

They run for six hours and shut off!

It has been too chilly to sit out here in the mornings – in the high 20’s and low 30’s!

Unusual for down here.

But – it warms up in the sunshine and we also get days in the high 60’s to mid-’70s!

The three Swedish horses were made by our three oldest granddaughters – MADDY – ELLA and SARAH

We decided some four or five years ago to forego these big bulky green trees!

They were big and bulky and went into a big zippered bag – that as I was getting older –

too heavy and bulky to lift up and place on the shelf.

So – we bought our bare-brown colored what I call our “CHARLIE BROWN TREE”!

It all comes apart -folds inward and into a long slender cardboard box!

It is not heavy and stores easily!

We also went to the WOODLAND ornaments – winter furry little things and people!

There are many sentimental ornaments that have meaning for us on there!

Just keeping everything simple for this first year in the new home.

Happy Holidays – from PAPA and SHERRY!

Papa’s World – Our first Thanksgiving Turkey – walk-trot in Cameron Woods Community!

Good day mates!

In Cameron Woods Community – Ocean Isle Beach – N.C. – there will be a lot of firsts!

COCKTAILS in the driveway – lunch at Riversedge golf course – picnic at the park.

The new book readers club and in the future the free book exchange library!

And now a new developer!

We have been sold to LENNAR – the number two developer in the country!

Things have changed and they are known for building spec homes – you get limited choices!

Different elevations – and one price has it all!

Whereas we were able to select almost everything! ( we are happy to have already built!)

We are hoping by Easter the community center is done! At least the main building!
Our new community center – slowly being built – the curbs have just been laid – pickleball courts are paved – and the pool has been in the ground for months – waiting to be finished!

It will be here that we will all come together as a community of neighbors – meetings – lunches and dinners. The free book library will be out front by the road somewhere I presume for access to exchange the books. We can walk to this easily! A workout room and kitchen and bathrooms.

And this year for the very first time – three families got together on Thanksgiving day – to walk!

8:30 AM. = we all met at the intersection of Waterway and Lindley – it was cool but bright sunshine –

led to a warm 3.7-mile walk!

The very first TURKEY TROT WALK-RUN!

A big thank you to Rob – who organized it by simply announcing it on the Community Facebook page!

And YES – the picture of the TURKEYS are from the neighborhood – on the cul-de-sac behind the

new community center -taken a few days before by Sherry!

The Zimmermans – the Sopers – and Fitzsimmons families!

We have heard from others who were away and could not join us in the first neighborhood

THANKSGIVING TURKEY TROT!

But – will walk next year!

We are a transit community – many people have this as a second home awaiting retirement.

A lot of people are here but working from home.

And a few of us old-timers ( us) are retired!

I think Sherry and myself are more the Grandma and Grandpa of the neighborhood! LOL

It is a community of many FIRSTS – waiting to be completed in a couple years.

CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY – OCEAN ISLE BEACH – come and join us – either if you already own here or want to build in the new Phase Three!

Cocktails in the driveway – picnic at the park – lunch meet and greet at the golf course

and now the first TURKEY-TROT-WALK!

Chrismas caroling is in the works and who knows what else is being talked about!

PAPA’S WORLD – CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY – OCEAN ISLE BEACH – N.C.

Papa’s World – first-time visit to Fat Harolds for neighbors and sister-in-law!

In North Myrtle Beach is a club called Fat Harolds – and this is the third location in the last 80 years!

It all started in the early ’40’s – on the beach – a Pavillion – where the beach music scene started.

The original club was taken out in the ’50s by a hurricane.

The music was started in the Carolinas and became a nationwide dance – called the SHAG!

Until the pandemic – they held national and international competitions here at Fat Harolds.

It is a combination of some Jitterbug – Swing – Boogie – and I think either six or eight steps!

You never lose contact with your partner and the intricate steps are fascinating to watch.

On Wednesday nights the crowd swells – to where there is no room on the dance floor!

This is now our generation coming here to dance – and man are they ever good!

You can tell by the shoes – men and women wear special dancing shoes!

But I see younger people also here – the next generation is now coming –

after all – it now is 80 years and still going strong.

There is a radio station right on the beachside of Ocean Drive – 94.9 THE SURF

They play all the beach songs – and classics – but there is music and songs dedicated to this era –

and some national bands that play nothing but beach music as it is called here.

Every six months – Spring and Fall – they have a 7 to the 10-day festival – here in NMB –

All the clubs take part – live music in all of them and live music on the beach in the square.

Thousands of people come here to stay and dance.

The Pandemic cut it back but now it is back after a year off.

And Wednesday nights they broadcast live from Fat Harolds – playing all the beach sounds.

Shagging – once again!

Their first visit and experience at FAT HAROLDS on the BLVD SHAGGING! North Myrtle Beach – S.C.

Papa’s World – Planted mums – arrange the patio and – fire in the Solo Stove fire pit.

This area is protected – conservation and wetland.

We selected this lot because of the wooded area and these woods will not be cleared out!

So – we have tried to go natural – planting Oleanders – and flowers that come back each year.

Bird feeder – and more plants to be added as we see how it goes.

The Solo Stove fire pit on the open patio.

We have been buying small bags of wood at various stores – plus picking up dead tree limbs.

Now – we tried burning pine combs – of which there is an abundance all around the community.

We generally start the fire in the early evening – still light out.

By 8:00 pm. we are done and I let it just burn out with the red coals.

Mums along with pine straw.

We have not seen anything in the woods other than a squirrel.

But I have been told to watch out for snakes!

We do have Copperheads in the area – and down the road, by the pond, we saw a large Black Snake!

I am ever watchful – always looking around – wild turkey and deer are also around.

To the right is the covered – enclosed Lanai – with the open patio in the center.

Our lawn is not large – normal size – and we did not want a large lawn to take care of!

Being we both are retired – and we sold all our lawn equipment – I have the lawn mowed every two weeks!

I have also had the landscaping done – and in the Spring will have fresh mulch!

The Solo Stove flames – a couple comfortable seats and a few beverages – an evening on the patio.

Thanks for reading Papa’s World – MUMS and SOLO STOVE – fire in the pit – livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

We are located here from NVA – loving the weather – no snow – no ice – mostly blue skies – and sunshine.

WELCOME TO MY WORLD – ( PAPA’S WORLD)

Papa’s World – the Tour of BALD HEAD ISLAND comes to an end – FERRY RIDE back to the mainland.

One last lookup close to OLD BALDY LIGHTHOUSE!

Our time to leave is almost upon us – we turned the golf cart in – almost five hours of riding around!

OLD BALDY LIGHTHOUSE just outside the bike and cart rental!

Be sure if you do this – check out what places to eat are open!

On Wednesday – ONLY ONE WAS OPEN!

Also – find a map – we found one at the Ferry Boat Terminal – you will need it!

If more than two of you – I suggest a cart with seats – facing forward – it is hard to see looking back!

The ride on the Ferry boat!

Sit outside if you can – find the sunshine – and watch for the boats!

A COAST GUARD CUTTER!

I had no idea they patrolled these waters here!

And a large CONTAINER CARGO SHIP!

I did not expect to see this – among the many barrier islands here

and between the mainland and Bald Head Island!

Making me wonder if that is why the Coast Guard is here?

And just how deep is this channel here?

PAPA’S WORLD – BALD HEAD ISLAND, N.C.

Papa’s World – Bald Head Island – beach and departure – one last time on the beach.

Sherry – Diane and Steve

There was hardly anyone here on the beach – in the distance, we could see a few people –

And we watched the fishing boats offshore – some dozen of them –

Soon – we spotted the Dolphins – two pods – they seemed oh so close to the edge of the water.

Diane and Sherry – the only sound was that of the surf.
My view of a quiet lunch sitting on a deserted beach.

Soon – our little tour would be over – I would try to get a golf car where everyone is sitting forward!

It was hard to see as you were always looking backwards –

And – pick up a map at the ferry depot.

You can get mixed up really easily and end up in dead ends!

Diane and Sherry – at the edge of the water.
A bite to eat – advice – on Wednesdays – only one place is open to grab lunch – other days – more places are open.

NEXT BLOG – SAYING GOODBYE TO BALD HEAD ISLAND – and CROSSING THE BAY BY FERRY!

Papa’s World – BALD HEAD ISLAND – part THREE!

BEACH ACCESS – one of the dozens across the island.
Diane and Sherry after walking up the dune of the beach access.
Sherry – Diane and Steve – the sound of the surf is the only sound.

We found every place we stopped and walked onto the beach to be like these pictures!

Hardly anyone around to be seen!

We could see a dozen fishing ships and Dolphins from the beach.

The island is full of these beach access’s with places to park your golf cart.

BALD HEAD ISLAND also has a marsh side and a boat launch!

We stopped many times to wander and sightsee!

Plenty of time to sit and reflect on our blessing of life!

Thanks for reading Papa’s World – part four will continue the tour of BALD HEAD ISLAND!

BALD HEAD ISLAND PART FOUR – in my next blog – thanks for reading! HGD!!!!!!

Papa’s World – Bald Head Island – part two.

The streets on cul-de-sacs – palm trees and each house have a small little cottage over the golf cart garage!

The streets are two-way – most of them – through the housing – the houses are a mixture of cape-cod and craftsman style. Two stories and little cottages in the front. Most have elevated views of the ocean and many are beachfront.

The ladies – Diane and Sherry – explore the path to the beach and water.
While Steve goes over the map – get a map or you end up in dead ends!

We had the car for about five hours – and also a map to get around. Here we can see where we want to go – but it is on the other side of the channel – we had to retrace our way back to the main road.

The island has a main road that goes all the way around – and many roads into neighborhoods!

They can be dead ends or through a maze of roads cut through to the other side.

So it is best to have the map.

There also is a 18 hole golf course here – we caught glimpses of it through the trees.

One of the many beach access with a place to park the golf cart!

TOURING BALD HEAD ISLAND BY GOLF CART – to be continued in the next PAPA’S WORLD BLOG!

Papa’s World – exploring Bald Head Island, N.C.

Leaving the Ferry Terminal at Southport, N.C.

Our neighbors – Diane and Steve – went with us for the day to explore Bald Head Island –

the only way to the island is by boat – with a very large terminal building.

No automobiles are allowed on the island.

Once there – you can take a tram to your rental or if an owner to your home.

The transportation is by walking – biking or golf carts!

Rental areas are by the departure terminal on Bald Head Island.

On our way to Bald Head Island, N.C.
Our entered the docking area for the ferry at Bald Head Island
Diane standing next to our transportation for the next five hours.

Rentals are easy – use your phone – pay by credit card – five minutes and we were on our way!

OLD BALDY LIGHTHOUSE
While we did not go inside – it was built in 1817!

The island is all set up for golf carts – but there are maintenance trucks here –

I think different companies store them in a parking lot here.

Plumbing – electrical and building companies.

Utilities and machines for road repairs.

I think this is the small house for the lighthouse keeper!
PAPA’S WORLD

I will continue in the next blog of our tour of Bald Head Island – MY BLOG: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – At Bald Head Island – we had lunch sitting in the sand on the beach.

BALDHEAD ISLAND – NORTH CAROLINA

We had decided to make the trip to this island right off the coast of Southport, N.C.

It is unique in that no autos are allowed – you cross on a ferry boat – and once there –

you either walk – rent a bike or a golf cart!

You can take luggage – in a small shipping container – and a tram will take you to your rental.
Once there – most rentals have golf carts as the whole island is set up for them.

The view from the ferry arriving on the island.

The beaches are wide and plenty of public beach access from the golf cart paths.

Along the way to the beach access – the little house for the lighthouse keeper!

There were many things to see – rows of neat houses – cottages – some private – others you rent.

The beach was deserted – no matter which one we stopped and walked!

Miles of beach – nothing but sand and water.
It was a beautiful autumn day – high 60’s – blue skies and bright sun.

On this midweek day – all the places to eat or drink were closed for the day except one!

And that would close at 2:00 PM.

So – we decided to go back and get a boxed lunch –

and then find the closest beach access – park and walk and sit on the beach and eat!

Papa and Sherry with our neighbors Steve and Diane – they are from Western New York where we lived until 1999!

Eating our lunch sitting on the sand with Diane and Steve – who just happen to live the summer months

back in WNY near where we lived before moving to NVA!

Little Cassidy

They came to us early – premature –

Four weeks short of full-term – so small.

They both weighed in at 3 lbs and some oz.

The doctor said it was time – Taylor – was taking all the substance in the womb.

Taylor bear , as her mother calls her.

Today – they have maintained that difference – Taylor is going to be very tall – Cassidy is normal for her age. Bode – the younger brother – acts like Cassidy but is going to be tall like Taylor.

All three are blond and blue-eyed.

PAPA’S WORLD
THE TWINS – WHEN THEY WERE LITTLE

Papa’s World – Watching football on Sunday afternoon at Chubby Buddha!

Watching the BILLS play!

One and one-half miles from our house sits this unique little bar – right along the airstrip –

of Ocean Isle Beach airport.

CHUBBY BUDDHA is the name – I have no idea why it is called that!

In N.C. if you do not sell food – you are considered a private bar –

so, therefore – when you come in – there is a terminal – you put your information in –

get a coded password( your telephone number) and pay the grand sum of ONE DOLLAR-

and you are a member for the year!

It is what I call a “LOCALS” bar – some people show up to watch the game – others to play the state KENO GAMES on a wide screened TV on the wall.

Most beers are $3.00 – except the IPA which we do not drink nor do I drink the draft there.

Those all cost more.

But it is a fun little hangout – no one bothers you – and you can ask for what game you want to watch

on one of the many TVs on the walls.

The bar itself is U-shaped – there are two rooms and big outdoor seating – some of it covered.

We go with neighborhood friends – mainly because it is only a short distance from the house.

Thanks for reading Papa’s World

I like local bars where all the locals go! If you are ever here with us – then we just might take you here.

Papa’s World – A round of golf – nine holes at Oyster Bay – and we saw many – many GATORS!

They are on the banks in the sun – when it gets colder – they do not move much.
We always are on the lookout for Gators and Snakes – I have not seen any snakes so far – but they are around.
Now – Oyster Bay – Sunset Beach – N.C. is one fine golf course – love playing here – and people live along the fairways and ponds – 14 – 15 and 16 are full of gators!
Sherry in the cart and behind her to the left while we wait for the fairway to clear – GATORS – four of them!

Needless to say – you do not wander around – we do not get close – and they seem to just stay there. Hundreds of golfers play this course and do not go to the water to find your ball – same for high grass and weeds!

Other wildlife and birds – a beautiful setting – and across the road is the ICW!
Sherry on the cart path between two lakes – and yes there are gators in there!
Now – if you ever get the chance – make a tee time here – it is beautiful – a challenge for golf – tough holes -located by Sunset Beach – N.C. OYSTER BAY GOLF COURSE!

Papa’s World – Sherry and I golfing at Sea Trails and Oyster Bay golf courses – warm afternoon days!

Papa was about to tee off – we were paired up with two gentlemen we did not know.

We only signed up to play nine holes – we were the last group to tee off at the BIRYD gold course at Sea Trails.

We were paired with two retired fellows who live there.

An Osprey resting on a dead tree.

It was a warm day – almost 70 degrees and blue skies and sunshine.

The next day – was also nice and we made a tee time at 1:45 pm. at Oyster Bay for nine holes.

Wildlife is abundant on this course.
Oyster Bay is one of our favorite courses here – we have played it several times over the years.
Beautiful scenery here – and we were able to play alone – but there was a backup on every hole.
Sherry standing on the cart path between two lakes full of GATORS!

Although they were 400 plus miles away – we were there in spirit!

We had celebrated his birthday when they paid a surprise visit for four days!

They surprised him in the morning when he came out of his bedroom!
Waiting for him when he came down the stairs!

He is such a handsome young man – and loves us – calling us MORMOR and PAPA!

BODE – seven years old – following in the footsteps of his cousins – Maddy and Ella – playing soccer!
PAPA’S WORLD – no politics – no bad things – just love – kindness – hope and caring!

Papa’s World – Building a new home – crossing off home improvements – one at a time!

When we decided to build a new home – we made our selections – but there were things we wanted that had to come after the build – they – the builders did not offer them!

We had a list of things – small – and we had to either hire them done – or do them ourselves / some had to do with landscaping!

Those we hired to be done – involving planting trees – taking out pine straw – replacing with stones and rocks.

And putting in yards of mulch.

Having already removed everything from the outdoor patio – I put down two coats of outdoor concrete paint!

This we had wanted to do from the start – along with doing the same to the enclosed covered lanai.

Here – Sherry and I placed all the furniture from inside outside so I could prep and paint!

When you get old – crawling around on concrete does a number on your knees and feet!

So – I folded up old towels – four of them and would spread them out – so I could move along and paint the trim areas.

But – being old – I still needed to stand up after reaching the end of the four towels – just to stretch those muscles!

The enclosed lanai – working my way from that end to the door that opened up on the patio.
The final stretch – the open door!

It took me two days but I did it! Cross this off the list – and now to put it all back together again.

The end product – inside the lanai!
Inside looking outside to the outdoor patio.
At last, we are done with this project – cross it off the list!

Being old does not mean you can not accomplish a planned project – I know my limitations –

The feeling when done – is worth all those aches and pains!

Thank you for reading Papa’s World.

Papa’s World – Tammy and Marcus and three little ones – surprise visit and birthday cake for Bode!

A surprise visit – Sherry(MorMor)- Bode-Taylor-Marcus Tammy – Papa- Cassidy – family!

They called – a zoom call – the night before they left – we are going to surprise you tomorrow!

We had asked them to come down after they had stopped overnight back in August when they were passing through

for Marcus’s family vacation.

It was his mother and father and brother and sister and families.

We visited them at their beach house in Surfside – South Myrtle Beach.

So – this made us very happy to have four days with them this time!

Sherry and Tammy – she is the youngest daughter
I took Marcus and Bode golfing – while the girls went shopping with MorMor ( Swede for mothers mother)
This would be me with no birdies!
Although his birthday would be after they returned home – we celebrated while they were here!
Taylor – MorMor ( what they call her) and Cassidy singing happy birthday to Bode!
Taylor and Bode – they both are going to be really tall – taking after Sherry who is 5’9″.

It was a special four days – playing golf – shopping -walking two beaches – showing them Clarks in Little River –

Calabash shopping – and having cake and presents for Bode’s coming birthday.

Four days is not enough – and plans for Spring break are in the making.

Christmas – for 10 or more days – we will travel back to NVA and spend time with them and our other daughter and her husband and the older granddaughters.

Looking forward to our next gathering as a family.

TAYLOR and BODE – SUNSET BEACH, N.C. NOVEMBER ’21.

Papa’s World – Cameron Woods Community – Cocktails in the driveway with old and new neighbors – JELLO SHOTS

Our old company REALSTAR has now become LENNAR!

Welcome to CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY of OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. 28469!

The GATED ENTRANCE

We are situated off Old Georgetown Road – across from Ocean Ridge Plantation – this also – parts of it – is Ocean Ridge.

Across that street is home to the BIG CATS golf courses of Ocean Ridge.

A large flock of turkeys just behind the new community center!

YES – there is wildlife here – I have seen Turkey and Deer – among the trees and houses here.

I have seen Gators in the ponds and some have seen snakes( I saw a large Blacksnake) while others have seen Copperheads.

I suppose raccoons and possums – I have seen Eagles and large hawks – a really big red-headed woodpecker.

While we are country – we are about two miles to three different grocery stores –

multiple bars and grills and many other shops.

AND – we are on the mainland side of the ICW and minutes away from Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset beach.

In other words – I think we have it all right here!

The ongoing build of our community center – pool and pickleball courts.

We all are hoping for a SPRING finish date – a place to gather – exercise and relax by the pool.

Until that is finished – we have had a few get together’s at outside sources –

The latest outside was at Rivers Edge Golf Course in Shallotte N.C.

And then we had a DRIVEWAY COCKTAIL PARTY at Diane and Steve’s house at the bottom of Waterway and Lindley.

The invites were neighborhood-wide through the Cameron Woods Community Facebook site.

About 24 neighbors gathered – on a cool night – the fires were welcome for warmth.
OH YEAH! manny naughty desserts and snack foods were present!
It was a chilly high ’50’s evening.
There were trays of JELLO-SHOTS – here are two of the four going around!
After an hour – all that was left of the JELLO-SHOTS!
We are a mixture of retirees – work from home – second homes – still working – to full-timers!

Cameron Woods is almost done with Phase Two – and an even larger Phase Three will begin under the new company LENNAR! There is guess’s that will not end there as some of the new roads in the next phase ends at the tree lines! No Cul-De-Sac – just like it will continue on!

Papa’s World – Walking the beach – small pond small gator and then back home.

One of our pleasures is walking on the beach!

It was warm – 74 degrees – sunny and slight breeze on Ocean Isle Beach.

We try to walk as often as we can – now that most of our traveling is done – company here and gone.

A large fishing boat just offshore.
A lone fisherman – on the horizon more fishing boats and Sherry walking with the reflection of the sun on the water.

Then we made our way home to come across a small pond – not with golf clubs in it – but a GATOR!

This pond is right by the highway – at a red light – and a shopping plaza with a gas station a stone’s throw away!
I pulled into a parking space and was about 30 feet from this GATOR – he looked to be about 4 or 5 feet long!

The pond here is small – maybe 60 feet by 30 feet – a collection pond for runoff water!

I had not seen a gator here before – so it just goes to show do not trust any body of water!

Standing out front of our house – all these except the one have been completed and closed.
The blue sign is in our yard and we are looking West here.

PAPA’S WORLD – HOME FOR THE EVENING – CAMERON WOODS – OCEAN ISLE BEACH

Papa’s World – saying goodbye to my HS friend Bob and then playing the second match with – Jim – Cindy and Buck

bThey had stored the RV in a campground four miles from the house – and for a week stayed with us.

Bob and Pam came to visit – we had planned these months in advance.

Pam went with Sherry to Tenn. for a health retreat while Bob stayed and then my friend Jim came-

we played golf – talked and they became friends.

Here we are saying goodbye as he prepares to pull out and meet Sherry and Pam.

It was a good week rekindling old memories.

Now it was show time in the second match scramble Cindy and I vs. Jim and Buck.

We played the previous day at Thistle – where after 18 holes they held a two-stroke advantage.

Tieing the front nine and they won the second nine 38 to 40.

Jim and Buck waiting for the green to clear.

This time we moved the scramble to Sandpiper – which is right next to Thisltle.

27 holes here and we played 18.

Cindy watched the ball when Buck and Jim hit.

We managed to tie the match up after the front nine – Cindy and I.

I had strained the tendon in my right arm ( it later turned all black and blue ) But I was still able to putt and hit selected shots.

If she hit a good shot – then we just played hers – if not – then I hit and if it was good we played mine.

BEEN THERE – DONE THAT! LOL
Jimmy – waiting for fairway to clear.
The second nine we not only had made up the two strokes from the day before – but we went ahead!
They saw that cart – we were on a roll!

It ended up with Cindy and I making up the two shots and winning the two-day scramble.

We missed Sherry and Pam – next time we will do a scramble with all the friends.

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – a coming together of the wives in the great smoky mountains near Pigeon Forge Tenn.

Sherry and Pam(PJ) at the retreat near Pigeon Forge Tenn.

They went to this log cabin in the Smoky Mountains for a health and fitness retreat.

Along with eleven other people.

The husbands stayed home and golfed! LOL

TOGETHER WE MOVE MOUNTAINS

Our daughter Debby taking the selfie picture.

It was a four day weekend – games – shopping and side trips –

Health and nutrition information –

Nighttime on the Island.

This has been planned for a long time – the main conference was in St. Louis –

But – because of the Pandemic – groups broke out smaller by themselves –

and were patched in live to the main hall of 2000 people.

If the Pandemic did not exist – 8000 people would have been there.

Of course, we also had fun golfing! LOL
Like-minded folks – Dr. Bruce was the only guy – lucky him!

The weekend had many games and fun activities – along with learning – the health field thrives.

Moving forward through the Pandemic.

Papa’s World – Playing Scottish Links course THISTLE with friends – Buck – Cindy and Jim.

THISTLE is one of the premier courses in our area – everyone wants to play – 27 holes!
Cindy teeing off on a par three.

It is a links course molded into deep sand traps and mounds with long seagrass.

The clubhouse is full of antique items straight from Scotland.

Even has one of OLD TOM MORRIS clubs in a display case.

We gathered together the four of us – Cindy and I vs. Jim and Buck!

They beat us by two strokes over 18 holes.

The second match is the next day at Sandpiper- another course next to THISTLE!

All of the cart paths on the THISTLE are wide concrete paths.

Buck teeing off.

It was an enjoyable afternoon with a lot of bantering going back and forth between Cindy and Jim!

Many stops at the bathrooms along the way!

Jimmy after hitting his shot.

The course is very challenging – water and sand traps – long seagrass.

Cindy checking yardage with Jim looking on!

Papa’s World – My oldest friend – my next to the oldest friend – they had never met – now they are friends!

I would say all three of us need to do this! LOL

Bobby and I go back to grade school in the mid-’50s and then onto graduation.

Jimmy and I go back to the very early ’70s and the start of playing softball for ten years or more.

Both have been in my majority of life although separately – never meeting one another.

That all changed when they both came to visit and now today they are also friends.

Bobby hitting first across the water to the green – Jimmy watching and will hit next – we played a scramble.

Bob’s wife Pam and my wife Sherry – went away for an extended weekend to the Great Smoky Mountains in Tenn.

To Gatlinburg and a health conference with 12 other ladies!

We decided to do this and play some golf.

We went across the street from Cameron Woods – Ocean Isle Beach where we live and play one of the BIG CAT COURSES!

There are four of them over there and this one is called Panther’s Run.

Jimmy putting it on the green with the second shot

They hit it off right away – Jimmy is about eight years younger than us – Bob knew his family but was long gone from Eldred when Jim and I started playing softball together.

Bobby laughed at something Jimmy said.
Jimmy after making the approach shot to the green.
Time to contact the wife!
Another approach shot on the green.
Nothing but the truth here! LOL
And of course, we headed to a Tiki Bar at Jinks Creek to have a drink and dinner!

Our daughter Tammy and the grandkids – Bode – Taylor – Tammy – Cassidy and Marley – the puppy!

They dressed as a family with characters from Star Wars and got Marley to dress and pose also!

Halloween was an adventure for them.

I love the way they look!

Bode Taylor and Cassidy

We miss these times with them – but a reward is when they come to visit – they spent a week with us in August!

Taylor bear and Bode

Age 11 and 7 – both are going to be so tall!

Blond hair and blue eyes – MorMor’s Swedish heritage coming through.

Tayor – Mommy Tammy – and Cassidy

Cassidy – the one who mothers Bode – always watching over him in a protective way – holding his hand in the waves of the ocean. Make sure he is okay.

And of course the last addition to the family – the puppy MARLEY – see below!

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – taking our friends out to dinner at the BOUNDRY HOUSE in CALABASH, N.C.

Pam and Bob

We have rekindled our friendship of long – long ago – grade school and H.S. buddies.

Bob and I grew up together – playing sports – sleepovers and sleep outsides-

Countless adventures while growing up in a little town in North West Pa. called ELDRED!

Now – like Mayberry – everyone knew your name –

and like Stand by me – we had a group of friends –

it was just that way.

Inside the main dining area of the BOUNDRY HOUSE!

This place is in high demand – so mush so they built a brand new sitting area covered outside!

It is part of a group of restaurants – Clarks in Little River – and Oyster Rock also in Calabash.

Each one is hard to get into – reservations are the way EXCEPT-

Sherry walked in and found that the bar tables are first to come and first served!

Even though there were 20 plus people in line!

Just a hint on how to get seating – we did not know!

Looking around – this was our age group! LOL
Sherry was admiring the metal hangings and decided she has to have one for the wall in the foyer!

Boundry house is a destination to take friends – good food – good atmosphere and good company!

And – I can see why! This is 8 miles from our new house – Ocean Isle Beach is 4 miles.

They are as different as day and night!

Here – it is calm most of the time – with the wide level expansive beach.

Ocean Isle is not as level – and also the waves are larger.

Sunset is more residential while Ocean Isle is more commercial.

Both have piers and free parking and paid parking.

They were excited at that – they both had gone to a driving range – and had their clubs.

Across the street from us sits four courses called THE BIG CATS golf courses in Ocean Ridge.

I made tee times at Leopards Chase.

We saw this medium gator on the bank across from the tee box.
And then a few holes later at another tee box – I happened to look over the bank and saw this BIG GATOR!

I had told them we most likely would see a gator or two!

Pam teeing off with Sherry watching.
Bathroom break and letting a twosome play through – we never saw another person again!
It was that type of day – quiet – no one around – just four friends meeting up once again.

Papa’s World – When friends visit – PJ and BOB!

TO THE BEACH!

A home with places to lay your head down – rest – relax and enjoy with us!

For that is who we are – we love our FAMILY and FRIENDS!

We grew up together – played sports – stayed at each other’s homes – slept outside – roamed the streets –

grew up together in a very little town in NWPA called Eldred-

a place you could say MAYBERRY and STAND BY ME in the same breath and both would be right!

That would be the both of us! I have long-term memory – Bobby – not so much until I bring it up!

But that friendship still exists all these years later.

As in this picture – we both are in our Autumn years – living each day to the best we can.

They are looking to buy and build in Brunswick Forest right acroos rte 17 there.

So – we decided to invite the four of them together so they could meet!

We are longtime friends of both couples and we all like to golf.

THE GEORGE sits right on the Cape Fear river in historic Wilmington N.C.

Altough we have been friends for a long while with both couples –

they have never met!

And the future holds promise of many golfing dates together after they finish their build some 14 to 16 months from now!

When that happens – Ginger and Jason will sell their condo in Florida and move to the Leland N.C. area.

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – Taylor walking with MORMOR – BODE watchin ELLA play soccer all be himself!

MORMOR – SWEDE – MOTHERSMOTHER!

The three older grand children all call Sherry Grandma – while the three youngest all call her MORMOR!

That came about as different grandparents are called by different names so not to confuse who you are talking with.

Me – I am called grandpa by the oldest and PAPA by the youngest.

MORMOR means MOTHERS MOTHER in Swedish – which Sherry’s grandmother came from Sweden.

She still has realatives over there and we made a trip 15 years ago.

Now – Taylor takes after the SWEDE side – Sherry is 5 ‘ 9 ” and at 11 years old – she is already up to Sherry’s chin.

Taylor ALWAYS reaches for Sherry’s hand when they walk – even with the other two – she loves her MORMOR!

She is going to be a true Swede – tall – blond hair and eyes.

She loves to ride horses and has become quite good at it at a early age.

She now plays soccer with Cassidy and Bode –

She likes to be alone and will go to her room by herself –

she reads and is quite good in school – she is the one who takes care of the new puppy MARLEY!

BODE – blond hair – blue eyes and at seven is also going to be tall – he loves Ella and sits all by himself –

Yelling “ELLA – ELLA – ELLA” as she plays on the field –

he has since he started walking following her around and she is so good with him.

BODE – no one told him where to sit – he went there and became so intense in watching Ella play!
Ella – number 10 in the white – is a Freshmen and has started every game for Randolph College.

She has played every game and only come out two minutes in each game.

She also is tall at 5′ 9″ and was recruited by two colleges.

Bode – has alwys adored her – has always cheered her on.

All three get excited when learning they will be seeing their older cousins.

Cassiy has always looked up to Maddy and chose to sit by her at the game.

Before the game Bode went to sit on Maddy’s lap and Cassidy moved over to sit by her.

Maddy starts for University of Lynchburg soccer team

which is ranked Number 22 in the national polls in Division three.

She came to watch Ella play.

Papa’s World – Debby’s birthday – family celebration

Along with meeting up for the college soccer game – it also was to celebrate the big 50 for our daughter Debby!
Aunt Debby and little Cassidy

We rented a AIRBNB so that we could all be together after months and months of seperation.

Along with meeting up to cheer on Maddy and Ella meeting for the first time on the pitch for a soccer game –

we also were having a celebration of a birthday for Debby.

A party was planned – dinner – and cake – masks – just a family coming together.

Mothers – Daughters – and Sisters

We strolled historic Lynchburg – and ended up at Bootleggers to have a special dinner.

Turning 50 is a milestone in life – and for Deb – she was mistaken by one of our neighbors

as being close in age to their 28 year old daughter!

She is a mother to three beautiful daughters and has a great husband Mike.

She is a CERTIFIED HEALTH COACH and QUALIFIED NATIONAL MARKETING DIRECTOR

for The Juice Plus Company.

A college graduate – a teacher in Health and Nutrition.

Surrounded by family – “A HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEBBY”!

A tribute to Debby – as this is who she is – a gift to our family!

Papa’s World – the only grandson adores the three older granddaughters – Maddy-Ella -Sarah – being BODE!

Bode sitting on Maddy’s lap.

He has always adored Ella – but lately he has become close to Maddy – whenever he sees her – he sits with her.

She is the oldest and he is the youngest of the six grandchildren.

He seems to have taken soccer to heart and may be our next soccer player.

She – Ella – has always been there for him – no matter what everyone is doing – she finds time to spend with him.

He wears a sweatshirt to Ella’s soccer games with MYERS on the back – it was hers when she was his age!

A somber moment with the both of them – but in her lap he has been since he could walk!

He sits by himself and cheers for her when she is on the field – “ELLA – ELLA” !!!!

Lately he has become closer to Sarah – she is younger than the other two – but I notice him following here now that they are in college.
Sarah and Bode – I love this picture.

All three he adores – he wants to see them all the time and will ask if they are HOME from college.

It is neat to see him bonding with Sarah now – she has always been close to the twins.

The grandkids – Ella had soccer practice.

Papa’s World – Sharing family time with MADDY!

Taylor Sarah Bode Cassidy and MADDY!

Soon – she will turn 21 – where oh where has the time gone?

I remember her little hands and fingers – locking her arms around my neck.

Picking her up from the babysitter and singing Ole McDonald Had A Farm!

Her first song she hummed to was Christopher Cross “SAILING”!

Now – she is a Junior at University of Lynchburg lady soccer team Hornets!

Starting at left front attacker – moving to right front in 2nd half and listed as midfielder in the program.

Ranked at number 22 in the top 25 in the nation in Division three soccer national polls.

THIS WOULD BE ME! LOL

We all came together to watch both Maddy and Ella play one another ( first time ever)

Ella held her own – as a freshmen –

playing almost all minutes in the entire games this season.

She lost 2 – 0 to Lynchburg –

who scored late into the second half –

the bench was the difference.

We had twelve of us – both families and all six grand kids in a air bnb –

just a few minutes from each of their dorm rooms and campus.

Tammy and the three little ones – Bode just may be our next soccer star!

We stayed four nights – watched two soccer games – had dinner both in and out –

and celebrated Maddy’s mother birthday.

While she is extremely busy – she carries a almost 4.0 in Enviomental Engineering –

She spent time with us on three different occasions.

With classes and soccer practice – that time was hard to accomplish.

Family picture – our son in law Mike had to leave to take Ella to soccer practice.

As you can see the boys are outnumbered by the girls –

We have eight ladies and four men.

All in all – MADDY got to spend precious time with us.

And we got to tour her new dorm house – three bedrooms – two bath and kitchen on campus.

Five ladies share it.

PAPA’S WORLD – LIVING LIFE TO THE PLUS

Papa’s World – hiking Riverside Park in Lynchburg Va. with Mike – Debby and Sarah and Sherry.

We all met in Lynchburg to watch the grandaughters play soccer – the next day we went for a hike. This park was real close to where we stayed in the Airbnb.

There were many hiking trails off of the park paved path.

I did not have the shoes to hike in so we stayed on the path.

The trail is not long but requires some climbing up and down steep inclines.

It goes through the dense woods and above the James River and looks like it has access to the river.

While this was closed for the season – a locomotive and caboose – as the rails run all through this area for transportation along with the river in it’s early years of forming Lynchburg Va.
There also are FOUR colleges here –

Liberty University – Sweet Briar College – Randolph College and the University of Lynchburg.

Sarah checking out the warning sign as some of the area is fenced off near steep inclines.

The incline here is close to a couple hundred feet almost straight down.

The trail does make its way down with a narrow zig zag path.

Not for anyone who has a fear of heights like me!

Debby Papa Sarah

Sherry climbed the steps up to a beginning of a trail and said it led to a very dark dense forest!

This platform was some 25 feet above us!

A view of the train trestle across the James river.

It was a nice way to spend a few hours in the afternoon.

Later we picked up Ella so she could spend the night with us –

Maddy had practice and a lot of school work to do.

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – when sister vs. sister – and one team is nationally ranked – we all win!

Number 10 – Ella Number 13 – Maddy

It all started many years ago – youth travel teams – Maddy two years older –

They played together until Maddy left the travel team in Winchester –

to compete in the Ludoun soccer program 65 miles away!

She made this choice on her own as soon as she could drive.

It was soccer hot bed right outside Washington DC.

Ella remained as she was too young to travel that far.

She also suffered a broken bone in each foot different years that had her not playing.

Maddy secured a spot in the try outs and maintained a above 4.0 GPA all through HS.

Maddy selected University of Lynchburg to continue her soccer playing.

Today they are ranked nationally in the top 25 in Division III and at this date – 11 – 1.

Ella number 10 – was recruited by two colleges and selected Randolph College

She now plays for the Wildcats which are situated across town in Lynchburg Va.

Ten minutes from Maddy and the campus of the University of Lynchburg.

As a Freshman – she has started every game and played all the minutes except two per game!

Maddy number 13 – played 13 games as a Freshman and has started as a Sophomore and a Junior.
Here – Ella is about to get the ball and Maddy number 13 is guarding her.

In all these years this game is the first time they have ever competed against one another.

Here they are in the middle at the top – it was a very good game – tough – no one scored in the first half.
Each half is 45 minutes – and ended up 0 to 0 at the half.
Ella – number 10 – tallest in the starting line up – the difference was the bench – Lynchburg kept throwing fresh players into the game.

Because of the Pandemic and covid –

the coach could not travel to recruit – Ella was recruited before the pandemic!

She plays midfield defense – the coach wants her to shoot – five times a game instead of always passing.

She is young and it will come – she plays so effortlessly.

As soon as he can he puts her back in after she rests for two minutes.

So proud of Maddy number 13 who drove herslf 65 miles each way to practice – so she would get noticed – and now plays on a team that is ranked in the top 25 in the nation at Division III.

She is fast – quick and plays attacker both left and right and midfielder in the front.

You can just tell she has the skills – the coach tells the team –

with Maddy do the 1 – 2 – do not worry – she is fast enough she can break for the goal – just get her the ball – this is where she passes back to the middle and breaks for the front!

SISTERS – Ella – number 10 Maddy – number 13
Proud parents – Mike and Debby

Ella made the shirts representing both schools and their mascots and colors – she is such a artist!

Ella and Maddy – Randolph and Lynchburg – sisters going head to head.

Lynchburg gutted out a 2 to 0 win –

scoring both goals late in the second half –

they just had a stronger bench.

Sarah – sister – freshmen in H.S.

Sarah – will turn 15 later this month – she could of played soccer – but had no interest and will run track.

She already is just above six and one half minute miler.

She played soccer when younger and also was fast and good.

A look to the West as the sky is clearing – the next phase to be built is at the end of this street.
A look once again toward the East and the Ocean as the storm clouds continue to move.

It was a nice rain – lasting maybe a hour.

Enough so everything looked fresh and clean and it was a warm rain – 75 degrees at day break!

Then the Sun came out from behind the clouds!

We had the afternoon sunshine and warming up to 82 degrees!

The water has remained warm also at the ocean.

Making it a perfect way to walk the surf and beach!

Sherry stopping to take a picture of a large fishing boat just off Ocean Isle Beach – a ten minute drive for us to reach.
Ocean Isle Beach

Now that we are settled in and almost all of the repairs we listed have been completed

we are trying each day to go to the beach to walk!

It is so relaxing – and there are still people renting homes here!

We at the time I write this – almost one third of the way through October!

And it has been really beautiful weather –

low 70’s at night – 82 to 84 degrees and sunshine in the daytime!

WALKING IN SUNSHINE – PAPA’S WORLD

MY SITE: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog my contact email: fitztdf@aol.com PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – for exercise – walking healthy – our go to spot – the beach!

One of the reason we came South and where we choose to build our home – Ocean Isle Beach.

We tried many areas down here and were drawn to this area in N.C. called Ocean Isle Beach.

We are some eight miles or so to the S.C. border – and we are situated on the mainland –

some four miles inland with the ICW between us and the beach.

We also are close to numerous golf courses – which is another reason we moved South.

We decided as we age – it was time to take it serious – well – we are not good – but love to play!

Opposites attract – that is us!

We tried out NMB in S.C. and really liked it there – but in order to find what we wanted –

we each had a list – it would of cost too much in renovations and thus way over our price point.

Then by accident – we stumbled on to a new community being built.

And we could get everything we wanted – all new – for the price we would of paid before renovations!

And here is one of those things on both our lists – access to a beach to walk each day!

We are in our autumn years – still able to get out and about – and one of those reasons why –

is to maintain a healthy lifestyle – eating and walking.

Sherry is a CERTIFIED HEALTH COACH – and prompts me to stay active.

That also is why we golf – being outside in the fresh air –

four to five hours each time – some walking – we trade off and on – and swinging those clubs(often)

She has run her own internet business from home going on sixteen years.

PAPA’S WORLD

WHERE FRIENDS MEET OUR FAMILY – FAMILY MEETS OUR FRIENDS

Papa’s World – The erosion of the North end of Ocean Isle Beach – saddly – it will be gone.

We decided to drive to the tip of North Ocean Isle Beach

We had not been up there and decided to just explore a little and walk the beach.

What we found was eye opening and very sad!

You can see in this picture just how narrow the beach gets and this was not high tide yet.

Protecting the beach with huge bags full of sand!
You can see it is almost hopeless!
Sherry standing on what remains of the beach!
A friend of mine has told me this area has lost many homes and even streets in the last twenty years!

It is very sad to see – the houses are roped off and no tress passing signs are posted.

They look like the furniture is still there as are the blinds and curtins.

Thank you for reading Papa’s World – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Farther down the beach from the north end – beautiful – Ocean Isle Beach , N.C.
PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – Red sky in the morning – Sailor take warning! It came in torrents – all day!

It was beautiful to start – soft pink glow – but you could feel it in the air – a storm was coming!

The sky was a soft pink color – but you also could see the strom clouds.

It was so peaceful walking outside to take some pictures – no sounds – not even birds.

My place to sit and sip my coffee – it is from here I walked out to take the pictures.
You could feel the storm in the air.

Later it began to rain – I was able to sit on the porch as the wind was coming from behind the house.

The rain turned heavy and the wind blew it away from me.

Later that afternoon we discovered a leak on the roof and reported it – they came the next day and repaired it!

I feel we were very lucky to have been home when this happened and not away on one of our trips.

It rained all day and into the night – stopping in the next morning for them to fix the roof.

RED SKY IN THE MORNING – SAILOR TAKE WARNING
PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – Lions – Tigers and Bears OH MY! Spiders – Snakes and Gators OH YEAH!

Our new home and the front porch.

We knew when we moved to the South – just 8 miles to the border of S.C. in Ocean Isle Beach N.C.

That we would encounter some animals – reptiles that we had never had before!

The spiders – I just do not like – having had as a child some really scary sightings!

I later found out this was somewhat harmless – but it still gave me goose bumps!

This I think was a form of wolf spider – the second one I encountered – the first was inside the lanai!

Spiders as far as I am concerned belong outside!

The one inside was very large – and when I tried to sweep it away – the thing exploded and a hundred little spiders came out!

I managed to kill them all – but it was a Twilight Zone feeling!

I do not want those type of things inside!

If you look back at the picture of the front porch – and looking straight at it and raise your right arm and point – these next two pictures were taken less than 200 feet up the street and on the corner!

This gator I would say is about four feet long – maybe a little longer!

The man who took the picture said it continued up the hill to another pond!

There are two ponds near us – one about 10 houses down the street –

and one maybe a 1/3 mile behind our house in a undevolped site that they are working on.

We have seen a gator in both of them but never in the pond up the hill!

From where this picture is taken to the pond up the hill is like 200 or 300 yards!

Now – how it got to where this picture was taken – it had to come from behind our house-

either to the right or left!

Sherry looking through the trees to her left – that is our house.

This drainage ditch runs behind our house and turns left and follows the treeline.

When you get to the end of the drainage ditch and turn right across the lawns –

you come to the street where this picture was taken.

We saw tracks in this ditch – not sure just what they were – but they had small claws on the tips!

Last but not least is the rather large COPPERHEAD!

We have not seen any of these – but we have seen a four or five foot BLACK SNAKE!

Those are okay because they kill these bad boys.

This one was near where the Gator picture was taken.

Several neighbors have seen dead ones on the road after being run over.

There are also COTTONMOUTHS around although no one has seen them.

I am more leary of these as they are hard to spot even though I constantly am on the lookout for them.

Yes – we knew in moving to the South we would experience all of this!

But – we made our choice and are so happy we did – close to golfing and close to the beach as well

as close to all these critters! SPIDERS SNAKES and GATORS! OH YEAH!!!!

Papa’s World – with family at the Durham Bulls Triple AAA baseball game!

What a nice baseball park in Durham N.C.

It was Casey’s birthday – we went boating and now to watch the baseball game!

It turned out the crowd size was announced at 8400 fans!

That is quite a crowd for a minor league game.

It had all the things you see in a minor league game with between innings entertainment!

They got the fans involved by having different contests – the scoreboard was fantastic and had another one in right field.

The man here was adjusting cameras for the scoreboard and we sat right on the third base line!

Radar from Mash – one of my favorite TV shows.

Papa’s World – visiting Auntie ( Sherry’s sister) and going on a boat ride with the Jone’s family!

Kristie about to drive the boat up onto the trailer.

We went to Lake Harris – Sherry’s neice and husband Casey have a boat.

It turned out to be a warm day despite the morning temperature of 54 degrees!

The two daughters couldn’t wait to anchor the boat and swim!

Olivia and Maya about to go in – they played on the beach and swan back and forth.

To them the water was fine – to me it was cold! LOL

I am such a fair weather swimmer – must be warm!

We spent a good two and one half hours on the water – even having lunch on the boat!

Later that day – we all went into Durham to watch the triple AAA Durham Bulls baseball game.

Papa’s World – some random thoughts and pictures – “DAYS OF MY LIFE”!

Our granddaughter – number 13 – she deked this player out and went right past her!

She is now a Junior at the Unversiy of Lynchburg in Va. Starting the last two years – and only one loss this season – currently sole possession of first place in their conference.

Papa – Maddy Myers – Sherry

This young lady not only starts and plays most of the entire games – but is a ALL ACADEMIC –

Into hiking – sunrises – and her major is Enviromental Engineering.

And coming down the soccer pipe line – is the youngest and only boy – BODE!

Will soon turn eight and already golfs with his dad – is all boy – bikes – running –

always looks at trucks – barefooted while outside – cold weather and all.

Loves and adores his older cousin Ella who as a Freshmen at Randolph College –

starts at midfield and plays most of the whole games.

I believe Bode will be the same!

FAMILY
Beyond those protected trees is our backyard and our home!

This drainage ditch is at the end of the cul de sac –

and allows the runoff to make its way to a very large second pond in the development.

We have seen a gator in each pond!

And we found some unknown tracks in this ditch going back and forth.

I told Sherry not to get too close to the high grass as we also have snakes around here.

Just down the street – two houses – two pictures were taken in the road –

A small gator was on its way to a third pond up the road and a large copperhead was also there.

Not at the same time – but N.C, has them both where we live.

I have also seen a very large black snake – which are good as they kill the copperheads!

All part of living in the South near the marsh and beaches!

Cassidy and Marley on football game day!

At least three times a week – she either calls her MorMor or zooms!

Sherry is MorMor – Swedish for Mothers- Mother!

She is very close to her and is the one who does not want us to leave

or asks when we are coming again.

She is sweet – but also very determined and head strong.

Marley is the new puppy – a GoldenDoodle –

who judging by her legs and feet – is going to be very large!

She is loving – likes to run and pull her leash – Taylor – Cassidy’s sister –

is the one who handles her the best.

She nips and chases both Bode and Cassidy!

Our front porch in October – Low 80’s to high 70’s in the daytime

low 70’s at night – beautiful weather – slight warm breezes – why we moved here!

I told Sherry – we had to have a front porch and this is one of the models

along with a office room – that was available!

Papa’s World – “Who you goona call – GHOSTBUSTERS”! Fixing the island counter!

On our walk through – Sherry found the corner had broken off and they had glued it back on!

It had come as far as we could tell – from the vendor shop like that!

It had plastic wrap on it and she could feel the glue on the top.

You can see the crack line and then the amount they were cutting off.

The warranty said they had the right to fix it – either in place or they take it off and back to the shop!

If they took it off – we would be one week before they would come back!

But – there was the problem of dust and chips!

We did not want the house full of all the dust!

When they showed up – I talked to the crew and they assured us they could control the dust and chips.

They were suppose to take it off and do it off site.

All they needed was plastic which they put down – then they discovered they had no more plastic.

Wait a second Sherry says – I have king sized sheets!

“So who you goona call – GHOSTBUSTERS”

I got some bag clips – and they clipped the two sheets together – and the three of them went under the sheets – with a huge vacuum – and they began cutting and grinding!

It worked – king sized sheets – plastic down on the floor – hardly any dust or chips!
They had to cut both corners so they would match.
The crack has been cut off and grinded smooth and polished!
The opposite corner cut – grinded and polished to match!

If we were not happy -we could of made them switch out the counter top –

but all our counters match including the sinks in the bathrooms.

This was a quick fix – ten minutes on each corner!

The cracked corner is gone – we thought it looked great – and hardly any clean up!

So – we once again had great sevice on the repairs we have made a list of.

We avoided all the work of taking the counter top off and risking more damage.

So – “WHO YOU GONNA CALL – GHOSTBUSTERS”!

Papa’s World – relaxing and walking the beach – we have seemed to like one better than the other!

Although Ocean Isle Beach is a ten minute drive – we seem to be going to Sunset Beach more often!

This beach is a extra ten minute drive – 8 miles away.

The difference is one is commercial and the other residential.

One is not flat and the other is.

One is more calm than the other.

Both have piers – both have plenty of parking – at least we have had no problems.

The pier at Sunset Beach – a lot of people sit under it to get out of the sun.

And you can see how calm the water is here and the beach wide and flat at low tide.

You can wade out and only be waist high!

Ocean Isle Beach has bigger waves and the beach is up and down.

There is where the mini golf is – the community park with concerts.

Bars and grills and a community center on the beach with bathrooms.

Sunset beach is almost all beach houses and rentals – hardly any big buildings!

We do go to both – Ocean Isle Beach has a big Farmers market a block from the beach.

Sunset Beach has their market on the mainland side as well as their concerts are mainland.

I like the drive to Ocean Isle Beach better – easier to get to.

Ocean Isle has little shops – and easy to walk around.

Many side streets and channels with houses.

Sunset Beach has a marsh on the South end and is where the Kindred Spirit mailbox is.

With low tide – the beach is really wide.

Papa’s World – Friends – make awish and hang from a tree – Vareen gardens – walking – ICW!

GOOD-DAY EVERYONE!

As per our routine with new guests – we took them for a walk along the ICW and the marsh –

at Vareen Memorial Garden just outside Little River S.C.

Josh and Chann’e walking across the shells along the ICW

We were going to do one last beach day at Sunset Beach – but first – we wanted them to see this.

This is whefre you can watch the big gambling boat depart from Little River and go past here

and make it ways out to the Ocean beyond the international border line.

There – I think they drop anchor and everyone gambles!

And the little one got a chance to explore – there were tiny little black crabs everywhere!

She was a trooper in walking back there to pose for a picture!

Her mom and dad were right there.

They left two dogs home in care by sister – hope everything was okay! LOL

This also is the place you come to – find a shell with a hole in it – take a sharpie –

and write something on it – name – date – anything – and then a string you brought along –

you hang it from one of the numerous trees “AND MAKE A WISH”!

Steve and Elaine – our dear friends from back in WNY!

There are thousands of shells hanging everywhere.

Thirty years ago or maybe longer – we played volleyball in a 16 team league –

In Portville N.Y. and also weekend tournaments.

We were all on the same co-ed team –

and it was a tough league – if you were not watching – you could get a broken nose!

Josh was just a baby when we played – sitting in his stroller – watching us!

Papa World – Sunset and night time on Ocean Isle beach with company – ice cream!

Good day!

We decided to take our company to Ocean Isle Beach – play some mini golf –

walk to the ice cream store and then go out onto the beach at sunset!

Eating ice cream on the beach just before sunset!
As we walked out onto the beach – we passed this “WILL YOU MARRY ME” proposal!

The people had gathered waiting for the surprise – we did not see it – but it was beautiful.

Eating the ice cream – no wind – warm – the tide was in.
Our comapny left two dogs home!

It was a fun day – we had gone to Sunset beach in the early afternoon –

then to dinner in Calabash and after here to play mini golf and walk the beach with ice cream!

The sun sinking in the West – dusk near – they had walked to the pier – now it was time to depart!

Papa’s World – Provision Company – a place where there is a honor system on drinks – and it works!

Provision Company at Holden Beach – N.C.

After golf at Lockwood Folly golf course – we made our way to this bar and grill –

we had never eaten here and did not know what to expect ( it was really good)

We placed our order while standing in line – and there is a very large cooler right there.

You simple take out the beer or soft drink you select – there is a bottle opener on the side-

and then you walk away and wait on the deck until your party is called –

and then you are seated!

No one keeps track of the number of drinks you take out of there –

IT ALL IS A HONOR SYSTEM and there is a hole in the wall to deposit empty bottles!

We are seated on the right at a table – and the walls and ceilings are covered with car plates –

and dollar bills! Most have names on them – hundreds and hundreds of them – and the plates have dates. Some newer and some older!

After our name was called – we were seated at this table – if you need another drink – just go back to the cooler – or go to the bar inside and order – just give your name at the bar and when you go to pay the bill-

YOU Tell them what you had to DRINK! ALL ON THE HONOR SYSTEM!

Cindy and Buck – Steve and Sherry – Elaine behind the post!

The waitress seats everyone and another comes out with your orders and calls out a Name!

You just acknowledge and they serve you!

This was a first for me and THE HONOR SYSTEM works – even at the bar!

All good things must be done!
We finished up and were ready to pay – counted the drinks – and well – hey – HONOR SYSTEM WORKS!
A good day of golfing – friends relaxing and sharing a meal!

Papa’s World – The War at the Folly – the golfing scramble match – GALS vs. GUYS – FRIENDS!

On a beautiful day – Elaine getting in some practice putts!

This really is a vista view golf course – sitting on the marsh – between Oak Island and Holden Beach N.C.

Lined up and ready to go – TEE TIME is now! The Gals tee off first and we are there to cheer them on!
I will let them say who is who!

They hit it well off the tee – a 30 yard advantage –

which means we have to have a drive 200

yards or more down the middle –

a slice right was the best we could do –

but we were even with there drive – and once again – their second shot was close to the green – we had our work cut out for us!

There they are putting for birdie on par three!

If only we could putt!

Three putting is going to make this awful close!

They are out there – 175 yards – with the advantage – we have to drive it 275 to be even!

Thanks to Steve – it was not his drives so much – I was matching him –

it was his ability to hit his second shot – and we would putt for birdie

only we could not putt and were taking boggie!

They started fast and maintained the pace as we matched cards – but we did also!
Picking up ball and going up to where Cindy drove her ball – advantage – another 100 yards!

All we could do was try to stay even to where they hit their drives – the second and third shots saved us!

Then – all of a sudden – we started to two putt and me – of all people – sank two one putts!

GAME ON – we were coming after them!

We shot a 43 on the front nine and we could not putt – back nine we started to putt and had a 40.

We wasted that front nine – and we knew it would be close – and it was!

They ended up with a 85 and we beat them by two strokes!

They are just so good that they need no strokes!
so at the end I asked them about the putts and what holes they used them on?

Remember in the previous bog I said they could have two extra putts each nine!

WHAT PUTTS Elaine and Sherry said?

Did not you hear me at the rules?

You got two extra putts for each nine holes!

Well – they remembered Cindy saying something about PUTTS they said!

Cindy added later – we would of beaten you if we had taken those putts!

Yes – you might have – so next time you only get two putts!

But then you have to remember to use them! LOL

Thank you for reading Papa’s World – livinglifedoingitmyway.blog email: fitztdf@fitztdf

Next blog – after golf scramble – dinner at Provision – Holden Beach – where they have a honor system on DRINKS – and it works!

Papa’s World – A gathering of friends – golf challenge – Gals vs – guys – rules laid out!

Gray clouds – bag drop off – LOCKWOOD FOLLY GOLF COURSE!

Elaine and Steve – Cindy and Buck and Sherry and I – all met here at the golf course!

It would be a friends scramble – Gals vs. Guys – and of course the rules have to be laid out!

It is always interesting to say the least – NO STROKES I REPEAT!

They are just so good that it is tough to just tie them!

But Cindy is always after more strokes! LOL

RULES OF PLAY:

  1. They play the ladies tee box – anywhere from 30 to 110 yards advantage!
  2. ( they all hit it 150 to 175 yards! Add on the advantage and you can see how far we have to hit)
  3. Steve and I hit from the seniors – he is I think 63 or 64 – I am 72.
  4. They really contested that because he can hit it long – but it also goes way left or right!
  5. We would have to use one drive front nine and back nine from each of us!
  6. That nulifies his long drives – and we pretty much were even in what drive we took.
  7. Par threes took out any long drive he might of had for four holes.
  8. Buck – who has a handicap – hits from the lady tees!
  9. The Gals will get two extra putts on the front nine and the back nine! ( keep this in mind)
We expected them to be tough to beat – and we were right!

After much back and forth with them trying to get more than what was fair – we were ready to start!

It was going to be a great day – the GALS vs. The GUYS at LOCKWOOD FOLLY GOLF COURSE!

Situated between Oak Island and Holden beach N.C. – on the marsh land – a beautiful course!

Thank you for reading Papa’s World – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog fitztdf@fitztdf

Next blog – the match begins – WAR ON THE FOLLY!

PS. Go back and look at the rules – remember the four EXTRA PUTTS!

Papa’s World – Shopping – stop for drinks – at Patio’s by the water – and then dinner.

A beautiful morning sunrise – our friends car in driveway – and later a shopping trip to Calabash.

We decided this day would be shopping – a unique store in Calabash called Calahans.

This has been a store of destination for decades and decades.

“L” shaped and 100 feet long or more on each side!

There are thousands and thousands of items – beach – lawn – apparal and holidays – all of them!

Steve in the old English telephone booth outside

It was fun – but I am a people watcher – not a shoper – I know what I want – and I am in and out!

But – Elaine and Steve had fun – I got to visit with a guy sitting on a bench –

and Sherry got to look some more at what she has looked at at least six times! LOL

And then it was on our way to Little River, S.C. to the waterfront.

I told them this is where the locals go and hang out.

There is even a biker bar there!

But our favorite is called “PATIO’S” and sits on the water – has live music –

and good food!

We are on the lower deck behind the other two patio decks – and also behind the band.

We have a VIEW of the water and boat traffic – plus this is where they dock the two large Casino boats.

This is the waterway the big boat came down on – and turned completly around and docked right in front of us!

It was incredible to watch as it from end to end – you would swear it could touch both shores!

The Casino boat after turning around right there and docking – and passengers getting off.

It loads up here – ticket office right there and there were hundreds of people on it!

It goes out to the ocean to the international border line – and then they anchor and they gamble!

JUST KIDDING!!!!!!

We decided to stay – order dinner – I HAD A SALAD –

and listen to the band play ’70’s and ’80’s music!

The food was good and so was the music!

Papa’s World – 1.4 miles South from the last house on Sunset Beach – sits a mailbox – KINDRED SPIRIT – now going onto the middle of 5 decades

A large piece of driftwood sits on a sand dune just above the mailbox – dedicated to the man who put it there some four and one half decades ago – along with another hippie female friend.

We had read about this famous mailbox – several books have been written about it –

It is a 1.4 mile walk South on what is called Bird Island – an nature preserve –

located on the Southern half of Sunset Beach in N.C.

I am not sure if this is the other half – the lady friend of Frank – but this is one of two benches next to the mailbox – a place to sit and think and write your thoughts in the journal provided in the mailbox.
The large piece of driftwood with the plaque – overlooking the nature preserve – there are trails back in there to explore – walk in silence with only the breeze – the calling of the birds and the surf .
Papa – at the entrance to the benches and mailbox – waiting as another guest takes her picture.
I can not even imagine how all those years ago – they managed to carry everything here to install the mailbox!
The KINDRED SPIRIT mailbox and benches – this is maintained by persons unknown – has been all these years – and replaced many times as the old ones have slowly eroded away.
It is a lonely spot – yet so many people walk here everyday and leave there writings and thoughts –

throught the years – those journals have been preserved and are considered historical writings –

and are preserved in a museum! I do not know which one but I plan to find out.

The view behind the mailbox at the top of the sand dune – the nature preserve and in the distance –

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH – when on Sunset Beach – go South and I think at 40th. street – the end –

just find a place to park alongside the road – be sure your tires are completly off the pavement – and if a bike path off that also.

Then find the beach access and come to a sign at the beach – it tells you the distance to the mailbox and further down the beach – the jetty and the mouth of the river – where the Casino boats from Little River enter the ocean – going out to the International border line to gamble.

PAPA’S WORLD livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – Bird Island Nature walk with Sherry – Steve and Elaine – five miles walking the surf and beach!

At the Southern end of Sunset Beach is a nature sanctuary called Bird Island

Full of marsh – water and nature trails through the dunes and along the river – all sand and sea grass!

Miles of deserted beach – calm waves and warm water – 82 degrees on the shoreline of N.C.

My thoughts to this is what this must of looked like hundreds and thousands of years before the mass immigration

from Europe and the rest of the World.

No one here – just beautiful nature sand and surf.

Our friends of many years from back in NYS visited for a week.

Elaine and Steve paid us a visit – and we went to Sunset beach – early morning before it got too hot!

When you walk South – Sunset Beach ends and Bird Island begins – no houses and only walkers

like yourself – walking the surf – riding bikes or jogging.

Almost to the bay and jetty – walking trail through the dunes.

This walk round trip is about five miles – so bring water to drink – walk in the surf to cool off –

and just enjoy yourself with the wonder of solitude – the only sound is that of the surf and birds!

Papa’s World – Sunset Beach, N.C. a day on the beach with friends – sun – sand and surf!

Our friends – Steve and Elaine Starks – true friends who appreciate you for who you are!

We have known them since our volleyball days back in the mid to late “80’s.

We have vactioned with them and their children – shared meals and presents.

Moments in time of destress and family passings.

TRUE FRIENDS all these years and now they have come to vaction in our new home.

Coming in from cooling off in the ocean.

We planed a beach week – golfing day – eating out for seafood and now – minature golf –

as their son and daughter in law along with grandbaby – join us.

It has been a wonderful time rehashing old stories and listening to new news fom back home.

They are from Portville N.Y. as were we before moving to NVA and now N.C.

They visited us in NVA and now here.

We took a little five and half mile walk on the beach with them!

One of the things they agreed to do with us was walk to what is known as the KINDRED SPIRIT mailbox

that is installed about 1.4 miles down the Sunset Beach and known as BIRD ISLAND!

It was installed there going on five decades ago – by a peace loving hippie couple.

In that mailbox are journals to wrtie your thoughts.

These journals are considered historic essays – thoughts and from all types of people and currently are in a musuem.

SUNSET BEACH is listed as a top ten beach in the country!

It is very wide when the tide is out – and rather calm – hard packed sand for easy walking!

The water was a balmy 82 degrees in mid September!

Now – the tourist season is mostly over – kids back in school – college kids gone so business scale back.

But – the beach remains the same – we almost have it all to ourselves!

Papa’s World – Walking with friends – Sunset on Sunset Beach – water was 82 degrees!

The pier and setting sun on Sunset Beach – N.C.

We decided to go to the beach early evening – late afternoon – to walk the surf!

Our friends – Steve and Elaine – came to visit for the week.

They are from back in WNY where we lived before moving to NVA!

The very first thing we saw was a young man making this sculpture

And it looked just like a cement mound with seashells in it!

I asked him why and he said the next day was his three year anniversary and he made it for his wife!

He said he had never done anything like this before and in the middle was a heart made out of black shells!

He had placed it just above the high tide line – hoping it would stay!

He did a really good job and I wondered who had collected all the shells for him?

We continued on our way – and the water temp was a warm 82 degrees!

Sherry – Steve and Elaine

We go back to the mid to late ’80’s when we lived in Portville NY.

We were there when they had the first of two children – a boy and later a girl. Josh and Brianne.

We first met them when we were rounding out our co-ed volleyball team – 16 teams in the league.

And it was not your average back yard volleyball.

If not being very watchful – you could get a broken nose!

It was competive and several teams played in weekend tournaments!

They came to visit for the week and their son and wife will also come down from Lynchburg , Va.

We are playing golf Friday afternoon with the McBrides as they know them from our neighbors in Portville!
