Papa’s World – our Cassidy – seems she is an ARTIST!

Cassidy – calls her MorMor ( Sherry) every week – or texts her – whom she adores.

While I have known she has the ability to create – it surprised me just how well she can draw.

Sherry saw a picture on social media of an American flag painted by President Bush –

for the celebration of July 4th.

I guess he just did it in a few moments – as he also is a good artist.

She asked Cassidy if she could do the same thing by looking at the picture!

Cassidy’s painting after seeing the picture of President Bush painting.

It looks just like his!

She has a unique ability to look at something and reproduce it!

A few down days and she sat and started drawing!

No one bothers her and she is very quiet – only a pencil and paper.

She sat at the counter with her IPAD – and watched a video of this drawing and reproduced it on a larger scale.
She produced the drawing – and showed it to me – I was just struct at how good she actually is!

She is her own self – and a quiet sweetheart.

Her third picture – all three we are going to have framed – she is only eleven years old!

She has a focus on detail – a sense of shade – these are all just penciled drawings.

I showed them to her mother and I think she needs to pursue this talent.

Cassidy with Taylor and Bode behind her.

“OUR CASSIDY – SEEMS SHE IS AN ARTIST”!

Papa’s World – North Myrtle Beach – Cherry Grove – old neighborhood!

At Cherry Grove looking South toward the tall buildings of North Myrtle Beach.

Here is where we took the grandkids for lunch after mini-golf – to SNOOKY’S.

This was the area we lived in for nine months at Ocean Keyes while the house was being built.

We would walk this beach every day for our three-mile walk.

This area here is where you ride the jet skies – paraglide and the big banana boats!

A great family beach!

Walk to main street and shopping.

The grandkids wading and looking for shells and sharks’ teeth!

SNOOKY’S is our favorite beach bar and grill in NMB!

We have taken most family and friends here.

Also – the water was very warm and great for swimming and wading.

A lot of people also were shell hunting!
Bode and Taylor in the surf.

What a good day – mini golf which is all Bode talked about and he picked out the mini golf course.

Lunch at Snooky’s and then some time hunting shells in the surf of Cherry Grove.

If you are interested in making the Myrtle Beach area your vacation spot – I recommend this area

as it is a great place for families and the beach are fantastic.

Papa’s World – Barefoot Landing- Crooked Landing – Lulu’s – Playground – dinner at BULLYS!

Cassidy – Bode and Taylor – at Crooked Hammock Brewery – is one of our favorites!

We left Boardwalk on the beach and drove back to Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach.

We lived for nine months near here and often came to just walk our three miles!

Around the lake and by the ICW and the marina.

Crooked Hammock – we watched it being built during the nine months we lived at Ocean Keyes.

Today – when we have friends staying with us or family – we try to bring them here.

They were so good the whole time with us – “Papa – are we being good”?

A smile every day – is just a way to make it a little better!

The huge old oak tree in the playground.

The playground across from Lulu’s – is another place we like to go and just have a drink and people-watch.

This huge tree – was in another spot some 800 feet away –

they made that area into a parking lot and kept this tree by moving it here!

It is a few hundred years old and they wanted to save it.

That is conversation!

We also bring the family here sometimes to eat – great place and friendly.

A good way to wrap up another busy day with the grandkids.

Going to miss them – life as grandparents – PRICELESS!

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – Boardwalk on the beach – upside down house – WONDER WORKS!

Bode – Cassidy, and Taylor getting their harnesses on.

If you are in Boardwalk on the beach – Wonder Works is tough to miss – it is a huge Mansion –

Completly “UPSIDE DOWN”!

I really did not know what to expect – only that some time ago I had asked a family –

that was exiting if it was worth it?

YES – YES – YES they replied – take your grandkids – they will love it and you can go in and out all day long!

WONDERWORKS!

Bode – harnessed up and attached to the rail system. Climbing the first set of stairs – up two stories!

Taylor – on her way up two stories!

Cassidy – is on her way up to the first platform two stories up!

Once there – you can head in a number of different directions – on beams six inches wide!

Cassidy – walking the narrow beam – attached to the rail above but only a rope every 3 or 4 feet to grab ahold.

There were routes that had nothing to hang onto other than your attachment to the rail.

The routes would go higher and higher – some 30 to 40 feet off the floor!

And the surfaces would change – always an obstacle course to navigate!

They played up there for over two hours and went up twice!

But – this was only one game to play in this building –

A maze on the bottom floor for LASER TAG – which we also did!

In this room, you did anything you wanted to do – a flash and then your shadow on the wall –

showing your pose – they did this a couple times.

There was a virtual ride where you are strapped in your seat and it moved to whatever was being shown.

For instance a roller coaster for a coal car – up and down and around sharp corners.

The whole time you feel as if you are actually doing it!

WONDERWORKS!

A selfie as we sat and waited to watch them above us walking from one story to another.

All in all – we were in the UPSIDE DOWN HOUSE WONDER WORKS for over FIVE HOURS!

They loved it and so did we as we also got to do things!

It also is very educational there.

Bode had no fear of heights – like a tight rope – he went from one to another – leaving the girls behind him

Cassidy was the same way but she promised Taylor she would not leave her!

Then it was back outside and an Italian Ice for a treat.

We decided to leave Boardwalk on the beach and drive to Barefoot Landing for an early dinner.

But – to anyone who wants to visit Boardwalk on the Beach in Myrtle Beach –

The upside-down house WONDER WORKS is a treat for yourself and your kids or grandchildren!

NOTE: Check it out online as it does have some height restrictions!

Bode was fine – he passed all the restrictions.

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – Ocean Isle Beach fireworks with grandkids.

The moon shining over OIB before the start of fireworks.

It was a warm evening – and the kids were excited – we made our way onto the island and found a spot to park right across the street from the pier – we carried our chairs to a grassy area next to the roadway – we were about to have front row seats!

To our left is the traffic circle and it seemed like hundreds of cars and golf carts were still streaming in and around the circle – most going past in front of us.

Papa and the crew – this was in the other direction from the circle – and there was a constant stream of cars – I have no idea where they went because that end is the end of the island some three miles away.
The opening of the fireworks continued for a one-half hour!
The view – palm trees – and parking lot of the pier – and then the ocean.

Papa’s World – OIB – 4th. of July golf cart parade!

Front row seats – 284 decorated golf carts – thousands of people.

We were front row with our chairs and the grandkids were so excited!

Here you see Bode – Taylor – Cassidy and Sherry.

It was a joyous celebration of our nations birthday!

There were also other participates in the parade!
Sherry ( MORMOR) Taylor Cassidy and Bode watching as the parade begins.
As the parade continued – dark clouds were rolling in – thunder in the distance!
The clouds rolled in and the thunder got loud – soon we saw lightening and we headed across the street beneath the wine – beer and coffee shop!
Just before we crossed the street – this man saw me take this picture and his comment was – THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL REMEMBER THE MOST ABOUT THIS PARADE – THUNDER- LIGHTENING- AND POUR DOWN RAIN FROM THESE CLOUDS and he was right – we made it just in time and two houses on the beach were struck by lightening – MOTHER NATURE PREVAILED!
Later that day – sunset – the storm cleared out – we made it back from OIB and all was well!

Papa’s World – Spending time with the little ones!

These three are like this at home – they are outside all day long!
Taylor – Bode, and Cassidy – are our youngest grandchildren.

You should see the LIST – things that they wanted to do and wrote down!

We have one more to do – tomorrow – MINI GOLF!

Bode has wanted to play mini-golf on this one course in North Myrtle Beach

since we have been down here for two years!

The one that has the Airplane and Helicoper!

Bode Cassidy Taylor
It has been a busy TEN DAYS, to say the least! LOL

And the crafts they have done and completed – hours and hours of doing them!

Bode and Cassidy – once in the water they are still there hours later!

We have been going to the beach every other day, mostly in late afternoons or early evenings.

That way – they will not get sunburned and they are now so tanned!

The sun sets on another adventure day.

Having them here has been a joy – it will be twelve days total and their parents will pick them up.

Excitement – laughter – and some groans – but all in all – they have been very good.

Cassidy – Taylor and Bode

Last year it was one week – this year twelve days – and we have done a lot in those times!

“PAPA – MORMOR – WHAT ARE WE DOING NEXT”?

I am going to miss them when they leave but will see them in a couple weeks –

they are going with their parents for an additional week on the beach at Topsail, N.C.

Then home and for two weeks will practice with a professional crew from California

in the musical LION KING!

We are going home to watch them.

Papa’s World – The amazing MAZE on Sunset Beach!

Sherry – Cassidy – Taylor and Bode trying to solve the MAZE on the beach on the 12th. street beach access!

Almost every day weather permitting – for the last 8 to 10 years – a man ( I do not know his name)

appears on the beach with just a shovel and draws these amazing MAZES!

There have been numerous newspaper articles – Facebook and other social pages and stories

of his unique style of PUZZLES on the beach at low tide.

Sherry is about to enter the MAZE and right below to the left is a diagram on how to SOLVE the MAZE!

The diagram also has instructions on how to TURN at each intersection –

you can not just walk straight through – you must turn in any direction.

The instructions are written in the sand – all done by freehand – and with just a shovel!

The articles I have read – he does this as a hobby and for years for his wife until she passed away.

He decided to continue in her memory each day – she would accompany him and test out the MAZE!

I would like to meet him and talk to him!

While we were there for 45 minutes – at least a hundred people stopped and tried to solve the MAZE!

If you are ever on SUNSET BEACH – go to the 12th. street beach access – either drive or walk the beach- and you most likely will come across a lot of people walking THE MAZE – and it is different each day. He says he starts in the middle and just works his way to the outside and they come in straight lines – curves and other forms of drawings!

Sunset Beach, N.C. with the grandkids!

Although Ocean Isle Beach is closer to our home – we always take the company to Sunset Beach!

The beach is wider and more flat and shallow!

Plus – Sunset Beach is more residential and not as commercial.

This time we had our three grandkids – Cassidy – Bode and Taylor.
All three love the beach – but Cassidy and Bode – you have to pry them out of the water!
Bode and Taylor
Cassidy is the one who calls MORMOR ( Sherry ) all the time!

The two – Bode and Cassidy are just alike although it is Taylor and Cassidy who are the twins.

Taylor takes after her MorMor who is tall – as do her cousins Sarah and Ella.

All three are going to be over 5’10”!

Papa’s World – Grandkids – GOKARTS – Slushes – oh my!

Cassidy, Bode ( not tall enough to drive), and Taylor are going around the track.
Cassidy and Bode – these two-four years apart – but they are more like twins!
Cassidy and Bode – she did well for the first time ever driving.
Bode and Taylor – on the second time – Bode says afterward – I want to ride with Cassidy – she goes faster!
Cassidy – by herself – both girls respected the course rules and did not do anything reckless.

They both remind me of their mother Tammy driving around and around.

From a distance, I thought it was her.

We also found out that the show Hightower on Paramount – was filming there.

They were there once and the next day shooting again.

We passed the enormous white tents of the production crews –

and there was a flashing traffic sign announcing the date and shooting of the show.

Taylor waiting to start.

Nature in our backyard – Snakes and Turkey!

The open patio in the backyard with the protected tree line.

We have an enclosed lanai along with an open patio with a fire pit.

It does get really hot in the sun out in the open – but mornings are shaded and so are early evenings.

Papa sitting outback watching for snakes!
And I spotted the first of two that I have seen!

Needless to say – we are not happy with this – I spread snake-be-gone around and mow the grass short.

But – it is a protected area in the woods – and since I put down the snake-be-gone –

we have not seen anymore – but I warn the grandkids to watch what they are doing!

This one I later found out was not poisonous and as soon as I took the picture-

it turned around and very fast went back into the woods.

Then a few days after – two large turkeys and little ones crossed the yard as I sat out there!
I was sipping my coffee and all of a sudden they came from between the houses.

We have also seen them down by the pond!

At night – deer will set off our motion light in the backyard as I will look out and see them.

We are only four miles from the beach – but it is real country.

One of the reasons we picked this area.

Papa’s World – Golfing THE LAKES with friends on our Anniversary!

Good day from PAPA’S WORLD!

On the day of our anniversary – June 25th. – we journeyed to Boiling Springs, N.C. to play golf-

at THE LAKES golf course with our friends Buck and Cindy McBride!

Cindy – Buck – Sherry and Papa.

We have been friends for over 35 years – and now that we live some 38 miles from them –

we get together to play golf as often as we can.

Looking for Bucks golf ball in a pond – no gators in there – we checked it out!

The course is off the beaten path and is the oldest course in Brunswick County, N.C.

But it is a fun course and not crowded when we played in the early afternoon.

Most golfers like to play early – when it is not so hot –

It does not bother us and we like no one pushing us!

Buck and I have been golfing partners for years and years – going way back to WNY!

We all like music and when together sing!

It was a great way to spend the day – celebrating our anniversary – then having dinner at their house.

Sherry and Cindy – are good friends – good golfing partners.

Papa’s World – And just like that – granddaughters graduate from Elementary school!

I can see it like it was yesterday – taking them to pre-school – singing a song!

Twins – dressed alike and their little HELLO KITTY backpacks!

They are different – Taylor was the bigger – in fact, the reason they were brought into this world early!

Cassidy at 3 lbs and Taylor at almost 4 lbs.

For some reason, she was getting all the nutrients and growing – so at 32 weeks plus a day or two

the doctors decided it was time – and it also was their mother’s birthday!

So now we celebrate birthdays in threes!

First day – Taylor and Cassidy.

Cassidy is the one who calls every week to talk to her MORMOR ( mothersmother) Swedish.

While she looks short – she is of average height – Taylor is going to be tall like her MORMOR!

Cassidy does soccer while Taylor has ridden horses since she barely walked.

Today they are both alike and different.

Taylor and Cassidy

Taylor would spend all her time riding and carrying for horses.

Cassidy – searching YouTube for projects to make – she is really good at that.

And just like that – going into Middle School!

Our little ones with the HELLO KITTY backpacks –

So grown up and doing their own things.

Papa’s Worl – Go-cart racing – OIB Fish Company – Family fun times.

Sherry – Sarah – Maddy – Debby – Mike – Ella

It was family time – a little bit of competition – racing GO-CARTS!

I sat this one out as I had a little kink in my back!

But – they all had a blast – round and round!

We found out later that the next day they were completing shooting a movie right there!

We had passed huge white tents being set up and there were flashing road signs – saying the movie set filming would be the next day.

Then I read in the news that they had already filmed at the track and were coming back to wrap it up!

The OIB FISH COMPANY restaurant – docks and boat landing.

Before the go-carts, we went to OIB FISH COMPANY to the top Tiki deck to have lunch!

And then down the stairs to the open-air bar to watch the boats coming and going.

Family fun time at the bar watching the boats and the ICW!

We packed as much exploring time along with the beach as we could.

Being this was not a whole week as the older girls – who are college students-

had to return for work.

But – we did do the beach every day – we took them all into North Myrtle Beach

Leaving so many things to do when they come back.

Papa – Mike – Debby

Our family from Lake Holiday in Va. visited and we took them on a four-mile walk in the surf –

To the KINDRED SPIRIT MAILBOX and back!

This mailbox has been there for over 40 plus years.

Put there by a hippie and his girlfriend all those years ago.

Today – thousands of people every year walk to it – take out a journal and write their thoughts.

Those journals have been collected as historical and some are in a museum.

There are benches there and a driftwood piece with a plaque with his name on it.

One bench also has a plaque with a lady’s name and it calls her the KINDRED SPIRIT!

Papa’s World – oldest granddaughters and parents visited.

The Myers family – Debby – Mike – Maddy – Ella and Sarah – from Lake Holiday – Winchester, Va.

They came for a short visit – the first time for Mike and Sarah.

Sarah is the youngest at 15 years old.

Then Ella at 18 years old and Maddy at 21 years old.

Here they are under the pier at OIB.

Sarah – how she has grwon – almost 5’10 – funny – laughing and full of unbounded energy.
Sarah and Maddy – on OIB beach- all the girls are sports-minded – Sarah is in track and field.
Sarah, who had years of dance.

Ella also is 5’10” and will start her Sophomore year at Randolph College –

where, as a Freshman, she started and played soccer at mid-field.

Maddy – will be a senior and three-year starter at the University of Lynchburg, in soccer.

She is co-captain this coming year –

Proud parents – Debby and Mike Myers

The time here is going so fast but they will be back in the future.

It is hard to get everyone together as college- H.S. – breaks all differ and Mike is a teacher and his breaks are different.

But we found out the two oldest will play against each other in September as they did last year.

Papa’s World – Backyard – SNAKE watching!

Sitting on my open-air patio – I have seen two snakes on the lawn in a couple days!

This has been the first time I have seen snakes in the backyard!

I knew they were around – I was sitting out here and saw my first one

about twenty feet away.

I am respectful of snakes as long as they keep their distance.

This one was coming through the grass straight at me!

I first saw it right over the top of the solo stove in the shade to the right of the palm tree.

When I got up and took a step toward it – it stopped and raised its head.

It was not afraid of me and just stayed where it was at.

I managed to get a picture of it and later identified it as non-poisnous

But it was long – and extensive around – a water snake someone said.

Now – we are in a drought and very dry.

The woods is where it came from and there is a pond about a quarter-mile away.

But no water back there.

The woods line the entire backyard and are protected and will stay there.

I know snakes are in there but we do not go near them and always are watching and looking down.

The next day I saw a small black snake – in the same place!

Both snakes – as soon as I turned away – reversed their direction and very quickly went back into the woods.

Since then I have made sure the grass is cut low – they like long grass –

and we bought SNAKE-BE-GONE and MOTH BALLS!

I spread it all along the tree line – so far have not seen anymore.

But – our neighbors down the street – had a timber rattler in their yard that bit their dog!

They rushed it to the vet and was saved and took a picture of the snake,

So – we are careful when out in the yard or walking the streets and paths.

We are investigating other methods of snake control –

we have several species of dangerous snakes in this state.

I respect nature but also want to protect ourselves and our company.

It is all part of living in the south.

Papa’s World – stop at CROOKED HAMMOCK then onto the PELICANS baseball game!

At the Pelicans baseball park in Myrtle Beach.

We decided at the spur of the moment to buy tickets – got great seats just to the right behind home plate

and take in a minor league ball game.

When we lived in NVA – we often went and saw the Nationals play in D.C.

Now – I normally do not watch baseball on TV unless it is my team I follow.

But – minor league to me is different – full of little games between innings.

The cold beer and peanuts – a slice of pizza or a hot dog.

At Crooked Hammock in Barefoot Landing before the game.

But first, we stopped at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach –

at one of our favorite places – CROOKED HAMMOCK!

This is a brand new brewery – perhaps opening a little over a year ago.

They sold beer out of a little RV trailer while consturction was going on to complete the brewery.

We like it here and stop in every so often – this time to buy a hat for our son-in-law

who requested one.

He had bought one when they visited us and wanted a new one.

So – we left early and stopped before the game.

The mascot for the Pelicans.

The divisions and teams in this minor league system.
View from our seats – $20.00 got us great seats.

Just a little time out and away from home – worth the money and a good time for a few hours.

Papa’s World – Our granddaughters – ELLA and SARAH!

Maddy Sarah Ella

Today I write on the two younger granddaughters – having written about Maddy in a previous blog.

Ella – caring – always does what you ask with no questions.

Warm – friendly – my LITTLE TINY as I called her.

Sarah – outgoing – fashion – arts – glamor – Broadway – big cities.

My Whirlwind when she was little.

ELLA – today a picture of health – playing college soccer and starting as a Freshmen.

While she may be a little homesick – she is thriving at college.

Stable – understanding – polite – team – not an “I” in her vocabulary!

NUMBER 10 – this is ELLA!

She is who she is – kind – smart – always giving – understanding and an idol to Bode as she is to many little ones.

Sarah today a Freshmen in H.S.

Try as I might to keep them little once again – she has grown these last years –

soon to be 5′ 9″ and beyond like her grandmother Sherry – as is Ella.

Today – they are 21 – 18 and 15 – all about to leap forward another year older.

Maddy is a senior to be in college and Ella is a Sophomore to be in college.

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – Continued – the GARDENS OF JAMES WOOD – Winchester, Va.

The estate was formed in the mid – the too-late 1700s.

The walls I believe came from rocks on the property as there still are large natural rock outcroppings!

Natural nature has been blended in with the springs!
There even is a bamboo section of forest with paths through them.
Ella is inside a small hut made from bamboo.
There are many gardens and themes inside the estate.
Sculptures are all over and these are from a famous artist who makes them out of paper!
It is very quiet and peaceful in the gardens.

Thank you for reading my blog – PAPA’S WORLD – livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

The gardens are located here in Winchester, Va.
Enjoy your time here!

Papa’s World – MORMOR – BODE – TAYLOR ( BEAR)

Sherry ( MORMOR) walking with Taylor ( bear) as mommy calls her.

She is eleven years old in this picture – she is going to be very tall – as Sherry is 5′ 9″!

Everytime – she will reach for her hand – to hold as they walk.

Quiet – always does what you ask – sweet – caring – until she gets upset – then it is TAYLOR BEAR!

Taylor and her mommy – Tammy.

She is the one who takes care of the new puppy MARLEY –

She also loves to ride horses and takes lessons once a week for the last 4 or 5 years!

And then there is Bode – who adores Ella and when he watches her play –

you can hear him all over the stadium!

BODE – sitting all by himself – cheering her on!

She is his idol – and he is following in her footsteps playing soccer.

Someday his time to shine will come!

And when it does – I hope Ella is there to see it and then Cheer him on!

Papa’s World – another generation of soccer begins – Cassidy and Bode!

Cassidy is to the far right – she is taller than the rest of the co-ed team!

Cassidy decided that this was the year she wanted to play soccer –

after a few years of on and off again.

The Pandemic played a role in that –

I was impressed when she went one-on-one with another boy from the other team.

She held her own and took the ball from him!

MorMor and Cassidy – she calls her MorMor every week – or zooms.

She is quick and fast – but I also see her hesitate when in a scrum –

but I think she will outgrow that as she plays more and more.

They have her in the back to play defense much as they did when her cousins

Maddy and Ella played.

Bode attacking with the ball.

Bode is fast – aggressive and quick – playing the front –

he needs to get his skills and I see that coming along quickly.

He is going to be tall like Taylor – ( who now rides horses bareback! )

Bode also is the tallest on his team.

Bode is a natural in whatever he does. A good athlete.

I see him developing into a very fast-aggressive soccer player.

Their soccer season has come to an end.

We got back up there to watch them both play their last games for this year.

One is the oldest granddaughter while the second is the youngest granddaughter with her twin sister.

One is in her third year at University of Lynchburg – Enviromental Engineering major.

One is in the fifth grade – so caring she calls or zooms her grandmother almost every day.

One starts at the attack front position for the ranked lady soccer hornets soccer team.

And had played in 13 games as a freshmen – started her Sophomore year and again as a junior.

One moved to sit beside her older cousin at the soccer game.

Both are dear to our hearts!

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – show a little LOVE!

We went to Lynchburg Va. to watch our grand daughter play soccer.

Our oldest daughter – her husband and the three grand daughters

all were there – the next day we went for a walk along the river.

Mike Sarah ( youngest) Maddy ( oldest – college soccer) Ella ( senior – college soccer in the Fall)

We watched the game Friday night in the rain – Maddy scored a goal

And the next day – after her practice – went for a walk along the river.

Sarah ( 5’7″) Ella ( 5′ 8 1/2″) Maddy ( 5′ 6″) Sherry ( 5′ 9″)

The girls are tall – Sarah seems like she will be the tallest as she is only 14.

But – when we were home at our other daughters house-

Taylor who is only ten years old – is already 5′ 1/2″ tall!

I think she will be the tallest along with Bode.

Our walk lasted a couple hours

as we were going for a late lunch and a early dinner

Debby ( Mom) already shorter than her daughters.

We walked – a fun walk – a lot of laughter!

Maddy Sarah Ella

It was a fun afternoon – a break from the rain – warm enough when walking

to enjoy the time together.

We had an early morning walk – the sun had already come up and it was the beginning of a good day!

Cameron Woods Community – looking East!

After walking in the community – we decided to go to Sunset Beach and see what was happening in the park on the mainland side.

This park sits on the banks of the ICW – and has these giant live oak trees –

providing shade – paved walking trails and benches to sit on.

Also – three-person glider swings – all facing the water!

In a small portion of the park – people bring their own chairs.
Our view as we sat on a glider-swing!
One going fast and one going slow – as it is in life in general! The views of the ICW!

We had restrooms nearby – picnic tables and a shelter – a car nearby and walking distance to ice cream!

Places to eat were also close by – as was the boat launch.

In the couple hours we were there – hundreds of boats came by on the ICW!

We will go back – take our chairs – cooler and food – find a place in the shade and just relax.

wondering – seeing painted pictures.

the wonder of nature –

The questions – WHO WHAT WHY WHERE WHEN all form when looking toward the heavens!

We move about – we share thoughts – we adapt and we move on.

The things in life – ever changing – the World revolves –

We age – we think back –

and then – you are a senior –

Where did it go?

Papa’s World – honoring those who have served past and present – Memorial day.

My stepfather John Soules

My own father passed away when I was nineteen years old – ten years later – my mother remarried

and John Soules Jr. became my stepdad.

I knew he was in the war – but he never talked about where or what he had done.

I knew he had been wounded – but I did not know how serious.

I knew he captured a German SS officer out of uniform in a castle.

But I never knew about all the meadals.

After my mother passed away – I came across this write-up of him in her box of memories.

I was once told by a friend if the family named SKEET –

“You know your stepdad is a real-life war hero”!

After reading this I understood what he was talking about.

Thank you John “Jr” – for what you did – RIP. A true WWII hero.

Sherry’s mother and father – Barb and Bill.

He became like an older brother -father to me after we were married.

He made me promise to never tell anyone what he told me about the war.

So – I have not said much of anything except what he said I could.

One story was about him and several men in fox holes in the darkest hours of the night.

It was very cold and snow on the ground.

They could see movement across the span of white snow.

They were scared and thought the Germans were going to creep upon them.

They spent all night watching and waiting – barely breathing and so cold.

Any moment they expected an attack and were so scared.

In the dawn, they could now see what they thought were German soldiers

was leaflets that had been dropped from planes on the ground.

Some had been caught on bushes and were fluttering in the breeze.

This was a story he said I could tell and later it was funny to him and the other men.

But for that period in the night – it was hell waiting.

William “Bill” Overbeck

In the end, he was in Berlin and was a driver for a general.

He told of going to a movie theater and watching newsreels.

I wish I could say more but he made me promise so I will honor that

as I honor another WWII hero.

Thank you Bill for your service and RIP.

You have my word.

Good day to Ye!

My wife is of a Swede descent – and I am of Irish descent.

Our friends – he is also of Irish descent – and I think she is also.

The smiles of golfing friends!

We have known each other for almost 40 years!

And when we first started golfing together – Sherry and Cindy had not golfed!

They made fun of us washing the balls while they wore gloves to keep their hands warm!

That was back in WNY where we all were neighbors!

Papa – after hitting his drive on a par three – we pared the hole!

Today – that is much different as they have gotten quite good!

Sherry and Cindy – after the rain started – this time we were even after seven holes!

We play a scramble – us vs. them – and lately – they have given us strokes –

it is hard to beat pars – and we can’t putt! LOL

While many people all go to see the sunset at Sunset Beach – I think it is just as beautiful at OIB!

The church gazebo – is next to JINKS CREEK!

We parked across the street from the church and walked down through the lawn

to this gazebo – no one was around and we just sat down next to one another.

It was a little chilly with the breeze but the view was awesome!

Looking out across the marsh from the lawn of the church.

The wind was so gusty – it blew my chair over after I got up!

Papa’s World – In less than FOUR WEEKS – growing VEGGIES in Cameron Woods Community!

We have grown our own VEGGIES for almost ten years!

A neighbor saw ours and wanted to know more about it!

They made the purchase of the system and I went to their home to put it together.

Less than four weeks later – they asked me and my wife back to check it out and show them when to add water and nutrients!

The pictures here are what I found in less than FOUR WEEKS!

Front view of the system – and it must have sunlight four to six hours a day!
Side view of the growing system which has no dirt!

The system is grown only with water – air, and nutrients!

A pump is in the bottom reservoir of water – and is attached to a timer outside.

Water and nutrients are pumped up the center of the white tower –

where it trickles downward mixing with air on the roots of the plants.

You can start harvesting salads in a couple weeks with no pesticides!

From growing system to table!

No weeding – no pesticides that you do not know what they are!

Grown in your own residence – from seeds

anything that does not grow on a tree!

We have all known each other from NVA for years.

After we both hit our tee shots – we ended up here by the 150-yard marker!

We actually used Sherry’s ball as it was about ten yards farther –

but we still had to go over another pond and to the green!

Papa’s World – our day on the beach at Sunset Pier!

Voted as one of the top ten beaches in the country – SUNSET BEACH, N.C.

We live on the mainland of Ocean Isle Beach – in this picture at the top right –

There is a very tall building – that is the West end of Ocean Isle Beach – with a channel between the islands.

Sunset Beach for some reason – is leveler – and shallow – and easier to walk.

However – it is also more crowded.

The pier – from which Sherry took this picture – has a historical walk with picture stations on both sides.

Going back some 300 hundred years of history in this area.

It cost one dollar to walk out – however, we purchase a pretzel and a drink and it did not cost us anything!

Papa walking the surf – the water was 70 plus degrees and the temperature 78 to 80 degrees.

We walked for over an hour in the water – and it was warm.

This beach is more level and is easier for me to walk – my hip does not bother me here!

As my Heart doctor has told me – “MOVE”!

PAPA’S WORLD – the PIER AT SUNSET BEACH, N.C.

PAPA’S WORLD – all at the same time – SUNSET – RAINING and a RAINBOW!

It was a light rain as I stepped outside on the back patio to see the sunset.
And behind me was a RAINBOW!

It was light rain all day – the kind that does the lawn and flowers just right.

And then – on the front driveway – I turned from the Rainbow and saw this!

Nature had painted the SUNSET – the rain still coming down and behind me was the Rainbow.

A fresh landscape – warm – wet – and the sky were painted white – gray blue and yellow.

It was the WHY we choose this home location.

Papa’s World – Shopping – walking Southport, N.C.

Southport, N.C. waterfront.

This was the first time – shopping in Southport!

Our neighbors Diane and Steve walk ahead with Sherry.

We came here for the market that was in the town park.

A lot of interesting vendors and local artists.

I bought a watercolor of the Kindred Spirit mailbox on Sunset Beach-Bird Island.

What drew me to this watercolor was the beauty and detail but also it was by a local artist named

V. Ryan Lauzon – who is 94 years old and still painting!

Her daughter showed me a picture of her and she is amazing!

I found this to be interesting – vine on brick building!

Waterfront in Southport where the Cape Fear River flows into the ocean.
Diane and Sherry walking the streets to find consignment shops!
Sherry and Diane are on a corner of streets full of little shops!

I even met the man who started GOLF BALLS for WOUNDED WARRIORS – Bob Duke!

He cleans and packages thousands of donated golf balls –

displays them all over the county – and sells them for $5.00 and $10.00 a dozen –

and every penny goes to WOUNDED WARRIORS!

He has made $100,000.00 of dollars for the nationwide WOUNDED WARRIORS PROGRAM!

Papa’s World – spotting GATORS while golfing at Sandpiper – and then watering my lawn’s backyard.

Two very large GATORS sunning on the bank of a pond!

I have golfed here four times and never saw a gator until this time golfing with Jim – a neighbor.

He spotted them as I was driving the golf cart!

And – they were large – maybe ten feet!

Later – we saw a small one laying more on the fairway next to a pond.

I have become accustomed to seeing them here in the south and we have several in the ponds

in our Cameron Woods Community!

later that day – after the lawn had been mowed – I ran the sprinklers in the backyard.

Here is one of two palm trees we had planted – and I make sure they have plenty of water.

I fill a five-gallon pail every two or three days and pour it over the middle.

The tree line behind the house is protected wetlands – none will be cut down.
We have bird feeders back there and added a hummingbird feeder and they have already come!

The back yard is our quiet place – a solo stove – tower garden and seating along with the lanai.

A funny thought for the day!

Papa’s World – drive home – beautiful sunset – next day – birthday – paint the front porch floor!

I painted the floor of the front porch on my birthday!

The day before my birthday – we celebrated by going golfing with our close friends.

Then – after dinner at the club – we drove off into a beautiful sunset.

The beginning of our drive home to the west and Cameron Woods Community.
It was such a pleasant drive after an afternoon of golf!
The next day was my birthday and I celebrated by painting the front porch floor – relaxing in my own way – quiet time spent doing what I like best – improving our new home!
I have wanted to do this for a long time – but had to wait for the warranty to fix the crack and fill it in – and then I sanded off and put two coats of paint down – took me a few hours but I loved what I was doing on my birthday!

The day prior we went golfing with our friends the McBrides at Carolina National Golf Course.

Cindy Sherry and Buck

Friends for a very long time – they live some 30 plus miles from us – and we play once a week when we can.

Buck teeing off

We were playing a Fred Couples signature course in Carolina National just outside Supply, N.C.

Cindy baked me chocolate chip cookies as a birthday gift.
We were almost the last group out for the afternoon and we played nice and easily enjoyed the wildlife such as this large turtle crossing the fairway.
Sherry was about to tee off and placed it right down the middle.
Sherry – victory in the guys vs gals golf scramble!

Thanks for reading Papa’s World – my next blog is the ride home – sunset and then the next day – my birthday was spent painting the floor of the front porch – and I loved it!

Papa’s World – The life we live over the years.

On one of our many trips with friends

We have explored and traveled the World together and with close friends.

Even today – where we have settled into our home – we take the offbeat paths –

exploring – looking – finding small visual treasures!

Family – Capital in the background in DC.

When in NVA – we lived close to the nation’s capital –

often taking the metro in with the grandkids.

Walking and exploring – visiting the museums.

Attending THE ELTON’S with Debby

Twice a year we travel either the East Coast or the West Coast for the national conference.

Seeing old friends and meeting new ones – TEAM GENERATIONS was born of this.

The iconic tree of PEBBLE BEACH California.

Papa’s World – Over the years – our life together.

Barb (GIGI) Debbie (sister) Sherry Papa 8-31-2004

Somewhere in Denmark – Norway or Sweden – on our 1400-mile excursion – by bus – for 10 plus days.

It was a dream for everyone to go to where Barb’s mother and father were born.

We only twice stayed in a hotel for more than one day!

We saw so many beautiful things and places and even loaded the bus onto a huge ferry

and made our way down or up the fiords – with hundreds of other people.

The most exotic thing for me to eat was Reindeer!

The old buildings are hundreds of years old – the rune stones –

Sherry and I went off by ourselves and toured old town Stockholm and then the new city.

Eating big breakfasts is the major meal of the day!

A trip we have in memories and locked away in our minds.

In a garden in the middle of Sarasota, Florida

A trip we made to visit our friend Ginger at her condo on the waterfront.

A place we considered retiring to but for the distance away – it was a possibility!

Someday we hope to return and explore more.

Shares a toast with her sister Debbie in the Villages, Florida.

Before my brother passed away – we spent winters with him at his home in The Villages.

It was a unique time in our lives – riding the golf cart everywhere – playing golf with him.

A time that I shall always associate with Roger – my brother and how we were the only ones left.

The Villages – I also could have lived in – but HAPPY HOUR came too early and too long! LOL

Papa’s World – the day before my birthday – at Carolina National – friends and golf.

The day before my birthday – we celebrated with our close friends – Buck and Cindy –

She even baked chocolate chip cookies for me!

Cindy Sherry Buck – Carolina National – a Fred Couples course.
Sherry is about to tee off right down the middle.
We play a scramble – guys vs. gals – Buck hitting from where my drive ended up.
Cindy – perfect form and they whipped us pretty well!
Sherry – senses victory – they played great – us – not so good – but I got the cookies!

Carolina National – outside Supply, N.C. second time we have played here – a good course!

After we finished up at 6:30 pm. we headed into the clubhouse for dinner –

although they quite handily won the scramble – we always have fun

and will get together again to continue our years-old match of gals vs guys!
