Papa’s World – For future generations – REMEMBERING!

A memory in a picture in time!

Before we left for S.C – N.C. –

As a family, we spent our last day hiking the mountains along the Blue Ridge of Va.

Here are Tammy’s three children – the youngest grandchildren.

Bode- Taylor – Cassidy and Tammy.

Today, the twins are freshmen in H.S.-

And Bode is about to go into middle school.

THIS IS REMEMBERING FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS!

The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

We made many trips here with Family and Friends!

Our days began on the Metro and the ride into the Capital.

All the grandkids loved it, and the tours we took showed them a beautiful city.

Ella and Maddy, the day we took a walking tour of the Cemetery and then across the 14th Street Bridge-

Onto the mall and ‘ROLLING THUNDER’ with thousands of motorcycles!

THIS IS REMEMBERING FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS!

Papa’s World – Memories of past life!

Sherry’s mother, Barb, and her father, Bill!

They are both gone now, but many happy memories remain.

MEMORIES OF PAST LIFE!

My grandma and grandfather – Nora and David Aiken.

She was Pa. Dutch –

Following the lumber crews and cooking before she met my grandfather.

He was Irish-English –

During the depression –

He would help feed his neighbors from his farm.

He passed away before I was born,

But my middle name is David after him.

They had 11 children-

My mother was the second youngest.

The oldest boy fought in WWI –

And his name was Roy.

He was a dapper man and always came dressed in his three-piece suit with hat in hand.

My grandma lived with us when I was born and stayed with me as both my parents worked.

MEMORIES OF PAST LIFE!

Marcus and Tammy –

When they were first married, and before the twins and the grandson.

Today, the two girls are freshmen in high school.

And the grandson will be going into middle school.

MEMORIES OF PAST LIFE!

Friends from NVA who all live either in S.C. or N.C.

We still get together-

Friendships from the past to the present.

I learned so much from him as he was a master carpenter.

We have furnishings that he built for Sherry.

MEMORIES OF PAST LIFE!

Papa’s World – Memories revisited!

This is our Cameron Woods Community Center under construction!

I think this was late 2020 or early 2021!

Today – it is in my opinion-

One of the nicest Community Centers in these developments!

Two pickleball courts.

A fully stocked workout room. Two large bathrooms – women’s and men’s.

A fully usable kitchen –

A large screened-in room with a half dozen teak tables and chairs.

A six person dinning room table and a countertop off the kitchen with two high-back chairs.

Two sitting areas with comfy chairs – couch and fireplace with tv over the mantle.

A small library in the sitting room.

Two entrances from the main building out to the pool, with a third from the screened-in room.

The pool area is completely fenced in –

Two outdoor showers – and a circular step down into the water with shallow water before setting down into the pool.

The deepest part is about five feet.

A large parking lot with numerous mailboxes and a large manicured lawn.

It is a big draw for resales of houses.

MEMORIES REVISTED!

Sherry is pointing at her golf ball with the green and flag behind her!

People are putting out on the green!

This was her drive!!!!!

Her ball hit the cart path and continued all along it before bouncing out to the fairway!

This is a par four, and it ended up over 300 yards!

Excitement at a once-in-a-lifetime experience of playing golf!

MEMORIES REVISITED!

Papa’s World – May 7th. 1949 – 77 years – ME!

I was born in Olean, N.Y., at Saint Francis Hospital.

I had a sister, 15 years old at the time, and a brother, 10 years old at the time.

My mother’s mother lived with us.

Grandma took care of me as both my parents worked.

My earliest memory is sitting on her lap on the front porch-

And seeing a neighborhood young boy across the street-

On his way walking to school!

I asked her when I could go to school, and she said in two years.

That would make me about four years old!

My younger brother was born about four years later.

Today I turn 77 years old –

And I think back to, “Where did the time go?”

Yet, I have no regrets as I feel blessed to have experienced all that my life offered.

The first 30 years I spent living in a small town in NWPA –

Near the border of WNY –

In what is called ELDRED, PA.

At 18 –

One week after I graduated from H.S.-

I started work at AMERICAN OLEAN TILE –

Across the border in Olean, N.Y.

And – 47 1/2 years later –

Retired from the same company, now called DAL-TILE!

After transferring in 1999 to NVA –

Working at six different locations –

I ended up in Dulles- Chantilly –

At the Slab yard – Sales Service Center warehouse.

I wore many hats during those 47 1/2 years.

I also met Sherry at the Olean Factory –

She was in Payroll, and I was in shipping.

That was around mid 1980 –

That we began to date after she went through a divorce-

And I did too!

We were married on June 25th. 1982!

That was almost 44 years ago!

My two sons still live back in that area –

And her two daughters live in NVA!

We now live in Ocean Isle Beach in N.C.-

Near the border of S.C.

We moved during the Pandemic –

Form here in NVA –

To North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

We eventually had a house built in Cameron Woods Community-

Ocean Isle Beach on the mainland in N.C.

The Pandemic changed our lives –

We sold our home after 14 1/2 years –

It went way up in value as the 401K dropped.

We said our goodbyes –

Loaded our car and left for the South.

Warmer weather –

And live out our senior years.

Our health was a big factor these past Twenty Years!

So we did the research – read the published studies and decided to take a supplement!

And now have for TWENTY YEARS!

Over the past TWENTY YEARS –

Building our IMMUNE SYSTEMS!

Or – order in a cart or just not!

We have been here twice and want to visit during the holiday season to see the decorations!

In 2020, during the Pandemic –

We spent the first nine months here in North Myrtle Beach until our new home was finished!

We really explored all of the area and into N.C.

This area was high on our list, but we just could not find anything that did not require a lot of money-

To update!

A lot of good memories from our time here!

June 25th, 1982 – our wedding day!

It seems like only yesterday –

All the years have gone by-

GOOD MEMORIES!

While we were in ASHVILLE,

We visited the SERRA NEVADA BREWERY!

We were on a tour and saw how the beer is made-

And then we did a tasting!

GOOD MEMORIES!

LOL – However – I like PBR!

In fact –

We have a local hangout on the beach –

Called – “PELICANS PERCH” –

Where can I get $2.00 PBR’S!

Last time there with my buddy – Bob-

We each had three PBR’s and a meatball sandwich,

And a bag of chips –

FOR A TOTAL OF JUST UNDER $17.00 each!

Papa’s World – Life in NC at Cameron woods!

At the entrance to Cameron Woods Community at Thanksgiving!

For the fourth year in a row-

The community gathered and walked to the entrance to do a “TURKEY TROT”!

They meet at the community center and walk together to the front, and then those who want-

Continue to walk the different side streets!

CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY –

The “WHY” we chose to build our home and live here.

A previous year of meeting to walk.

The group has gotten larger each year.

Our front porch in Cameron Woods Community!

This is the one thing I wanted –

A FRONT PORCH!

Covered from rain and shaded from the hot Carolina sun!

I sit here and say hello to those who walk by or wave to those riding by.

You can say it is my little place of heaven as a senior!

Our journey brought us here as seniors.

Today, we have no plans to sell and move on!

This is our final home.

WE ARE BLESSED to have been able to do this!

FRIENDS – FAMILY have all shared our home here.

That is why we designed it to do just that!

Health – well-being – senior living!

All factors into this.

Every year, we reset our healthy living!

We maintain a healthy lifestyle so we can stay in our home.

Life is short-

A healthy life prolongs that life.

For over TWENTY years, we have been building our IMMUNE systems to stay active and healthy!

We believe in this supplement –

It has been a factor in our health for all these years.

If you wish to read and fact-check –

It has been around for forty years!

PAPA’S WORLD – LIFE IN CAROLINA AT CAMERON WOODS!

Papa’s World – Sunshine – blue skies – beach life!

A view of Ocean Isle Beach from the “GROIN” area looking SW.

The area behind the “GROIN” pictured here –

It is eroding fast!

The dunes are almost gone, along with the trees and vegetation.

The surf comes in and pulls the sand out.

The “Groin” was put here to stop that from happening where the houses are.

A beach replenishing pumped acres of sand in from dredging operations.

First and second avenues had disappeared, and third avenue was in danger of vanishing!

At high tide,

The ocean water actually was almost under the white house-

But for huge sandbags –

Surrounding it!

Those bags remained there, and sand blew in over them.

Such is beach life –

We chose to stay on the mainland –

And commute to here when we want to!

SUNSHINE – BLUE SKIES and BEACH LIFE!

This is the OIB public park on the island.

Open-air concerts are held here from mid-May to the beginning of October.

After October, there are festivals held here!

It is one of the perks we knew of when we decided to build our home in –

CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY!

SUNSHINE – BLUE SKIES and BEACH LIFE!

Our home –

The driveway looking toward the sunrise in the East.

This part of the coastline faces almost due South-

Because of the curvature from Charleston to the Outer Banks.

The storms tend to come up the coast and veer out, but sometimes –

They hit.

We have had one Category One storm.

It was scary, and not sure if we will stay for the stronger ones.

We are back some two to three miles from the coastline.

It is the wind I worry about and the protected nature trees we have here.

We have protected wildlife areas here and large trees behind the house.

But – the wind seems to come sideways, and the trees move in that direction-

And not toward the house.

The beauty of all the trees is one reason we chose this community-

Instead of all the clear-cut ones.

And in the picture, you can see a little part of all the trees!

Having family stay was a major consideration when we built this house.

We have room for them.

FRIENDS are also important to us.

We have lifelong friends whom we see two or three times a year.

Papa’s World – Writing for family!

Sherry’s father – “Bill”!

A WWII vet –

And a master craftsman in building furniture!

He made three Hutches –

One for each daughter –

They come in two pieces –

The top has glass fronts and doors.

The bottoms have wooden doors and shelves.

The upper also has shelves where you can display your fine china, etc.

He was self-taught –

And would use a small piece of paper to roughly draw his creations –

And then from his mind –

Cut and plane the wood –

Making dove tails and smooth surfaces for staining.

He was also a union carpenter.

We have three of his pieces in our home.

I write this for all the great-grandchildren who did know him.

A journal of generational information for future generations to come.

Here is Sherry’s mother and father –

Barb and Bill.

Her mother’s mother was born in Sweden.

There are still relatives over there.

Barb was known to the grandkids as “GIGI”!

She married Bill when she was 17.

They had three daughters –

Sherry, the oldest, then Debbie, and finally Bonnie.

They all lived just outside Mount Jewett, PA.

On several acres of land, farm animals were growing up, including horses.

Mount Jewett was a Swedish community-

Built by Swedes in the mid-1800s.

Her father was Scotch-German.

Many fond memories of both her parents.

Bill was raised in Ludlow, PA.

And enlisted in the service for WWII.

A JOURNAL OF GENERATIONAL INFORMATION.

When friends gather on the beach.

We live near two beaches-

Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach.

This is a view from Sunset Beach looking North to OIB and the tall building!

We often meet folks and sit and talk near either pier.

We both wanted a warmer climate-

And as little snow-ice and freezing weather –

We still have four seasons here, but much milder.

Marcus and Tammy were early in their marriage.

They now have the twin girls –

Cassidy and Taylor –

And the only boy grandchild – Bode-

Papa’s World – Looking around – beach life!

My dream has come true-

The other day, we decided to go to the two beaches-

It was a dead winter –

But a comfy 55 degrees with lots of sunshine.

First, we drove for fifteen minutes –

Crossed over the causeway bridge-

And parked near the pier and entrance to Sunset Beach.

We walked on the wooden walkway to the sand and down to the water.

It was low tide!

Sherry kicked off her sandals, and her bare feet touched the sand.

GROUNDED, SHE SAID!

Me – I keep my sneakers and socks on –

The sand is too cold-

But others were walking barefoot!

The sand, surf, and blue skies with the warm sun –

Made our day trip worth it!

Then it was back to the parking lot and the car!

We decided to go back across the bridge, turn right, and stop at THE SUNSET BEACH PARK!

Here are the restrooms which I needed –

Sherry said she would meet me behind the pavilion.

You can view the ICW form here and watch the boats coming up and down the waterway-

Even in the wintertime!

It was time to journey to our other beach –

A fifteen-minute drive to Ocean Isle Beach!

It is here from mid-May to mid-October-

We volunteer for the Protection of Sea Turtles!

This May will be the start of our fourth summer!

We parked at the pier and walked out to the sand and to the water.

It is different here –

Sunset Beach is flatter, and the sand seems more like powdered sand!

The sand here is coarser and has more shells.

Yet, you can see Sunset Beach!

There is more beach erosion here with drop-offs!

Making it sometimes difficult to get to the flat areas and the surf.

But – on the plus side-

We are much closer here and only ten minutes to the sand!

Sherry decided to walk up to the Community Center –

And I would drive the car there and pick her up!

This beach is our favorite to go and watch the sunrise.

Here – we are by the groin to see the sun come up!

I parked the car and walked up the ramp and met her.

We sat down under the covered deck and just took in the sight-

Sun – Sand and Surf.

Our peaceful place and my dream after all these years.

The Kinzua Bridge( Via Duct) –

Just outside Mount Jewett, Pa.

Cindy – and Sherry.

Sherry was raised near here –

And this bridge is a historic landmark and now a State Park!

Built in the mid-1800s- Stretching across the KINZUA VALLEY –

The land of the Seneca Indian Nation-

It was built to transport coal from Pittsburgh to Erie!

It is almost one mile across and three hundred and ten feet high!

Trains traveled across, and this was considered one of the wonders of the world when built!

A couple of decades ago –

A TORNADO came through and took out half the bridge.

The remaining half has been preserved, and you can now walk out and view through thick glass all the way to the floor of the valley.

The rest of the bridge remains where it came down.

A center was built – like a museum-

And the whole area became a state Park!

Here, Cindy – who has been friends with Sherry since the 1980s-

Sits with Sherry –

Sherry’s father used to ride his snowmobile across the bridge.

A steam locomotive used to cross before it came down –

And while playing golf at the Kane Country Club golf course-

We would watch it come by a par three hole!

FRIENDS AND MEMORIES!

Bode – the only grandson from Sherry’s side of the family!

Before we sold the house in Brambleton, VA.

He would come to visit while his sisters were in school and his mother was at her consignment store!

Hours and hours he would spend playing games.

So quiet –

I would check on him every few minutes!

Here he was, maybe three years old.

Today he plays football, golf, basketball, and field hockey-

And more as he gets older.

He is now eleven years old and in fifth grade!

All boy – barefoot – short shirt sleeves and shorts-

Even when it is cold outside! LOL

FAMILY MEMORIES!

Our very longtime friends from Portville, NY.

Steve and Elaine-

We raised our families together-

Played volleyball together –

Golf together and spent many fun times with them before we moved to NVA in 1999!

Soon, they will move to Lynchburg, VA., to be near family!

Attended and recognized.

The PAST continues into the present –

Now twenty years and going strong!

Taylor and Cassidy –

They would both crawl up onto my lap-

And watch the screen –

Flashing through photos of events and family, and friends!

Today, they are freshman in HS.

I miss these past memories –

But they are making new ones in the present!

REMEMBERING THE PAST INTO THE PRESENT!

Papa – on the far left-

Sherry – standing in front of him!

In the mid-80s-

We played volleyball together.

Here is our team, known as “THE BEACH CLUB”!

Even back then, we dreamed of one day living near a beach!

1989 – we won!

The league had 16 teams.

And it was a tough league-

You had to be on guard, or you would get smashed in the face with a spike!

Many fond memories with these friends from back then!

PAST MEMORIES INTO THE PRESENT!

Point of Rocks across the border into Maryland.

A short ride from our home in Brambleton.

Exploring the area as we do in every place we live.

PAST MEMORIES INTO THE PRESENT!

For fourteen and one-half years –

We called this home in Brambleton, VA.

But – the Pandemic hit –

The 401K went South –

But the increase in home value was too much to ignore.

WE SOLD –

And built a home in Cameron Woods Community-

In Ocean Isle Beach, NC, on the mainland.

The day RONNIE COX – on the right-

Star of the movie “DELIVERANCE”-

Stayed overnight with us at our house in Brambleton, VA.

PAST MEMORIES INTO THE PRESENT!

Papa’s World – Memories from the past!

Yes, it is!

A Tower Garden in our garage in Brambleton, VA, during the winter!

We have been growing our own Produce for twelve years!

Back in NVA, it was not possible to grow in the wintertime.

So – We set this one up with grow lights –

And ran it full time in the garage.

With the garage door down –

The temperature hovered between 40 to 50 degrees!

The grow lights –

Which ran on a timer at night-

Helped by radiating heat during the time they were on at night!

During the daytime the garage heated up inside until you opened the door.

We did this for years while we lived there!

Today, we have one tower Garden set up full-time in our back patio –

It is there year-round except when I take a day –

Tear it apart and clean it up!

Usually every six months!

We get twelve months a year growing here.

We put an aquarium heater in the water reservoir –

So in wintertime the water stays warm.

We have a metallic covering –

That has perforated holes –

To cover the entire Tower Garden –

Allowing sunlight –

While protecting from below-freezing temperatures!

This works as we have not lost any produce in four years of growing!

A MEMORY FROM THE PAST CONTINUES TODAY!

Trisha and Shawn – married – my youngest son!

And next to them is Troy –

My oldest son.

All three still live back in NWPA –

Where were they born and raised!

Today, they make the long trip down to our home-

Always looking for them to visit.

A PAST MEMORY LASTING INTO THE PRESENT!

This is Slavins’ furniture store just down the street from my home in Eldred, Pa.

I was allowed to roller skate on the sidewalk to here –

Then I had to turn around and go back to my house.

Today – this is part of the WWII museum!

Tour buses stop here-

So folks can walk through the museum.

The other wall has a WWII tank –

Bursting through the wall!

If you have a bucket list –

This is a must-see for such a little town in NWPA!

A LONG AGO MEMORY CONTINUES ON TO THIS DAY!

Want to see how and why?

NO OBLIGATION!

LOL – This says a lot about folks today!

My youngest son – Shawn –

He is a world-ranked pool player.

Last year – the team he plays on –

Won two World Championships –

Competing against teams worldwide in Las Vegas!

A PAST MEMORY THAT CONTINUES TO ON TODAY!

Papa’s World – Humor – Life – Good Thoughts!

A trip back to Lake Holiday just past Winchester, Va. –

A Christmas tradition of CHRISTMAS IN A BARN –

Bethel Lutheran Church-

Above – Debbby – Maddy – Ella Sherry and Sarah.

Grandmother, mother, and three granddaughters!

This is a special time of year –

And as Seniors –

We still can make the trip back North at Christmas time.

THIS IS LIFE for us!

This is how we now live our lives as Seniors.

Every day is a new page in the book of life for us.

We cherish our life together.

Now going on 44 years, and before that, for a year and a half.

We have become each other’s caregiver.

Taking turns driving –

Running errands together.

Still able to plan adventures with family and friends!

LIFE is what we make it to be!

LAUGH – it makes you feel good –

Even if the above does ring some truth! LOL

Home now in the South –

Near the borders of NC and SC!

Our senior years will be spent here-

Now going on five years!

It is warm most of the year here.

In our senior years –

It is hard for both of us to brave the harsh cold-

Snow and Ice and even just the chill of a moderate winter!

Being comfortable in our home-

But – knowing that everyone is welcome.

Our home is set up for guests.

Sand – Beach-

And Surf –

But minutes away.

PAPA’S WORLD – HUMOR – LIFE and GOOD THOUGHTS!

Papa’s World – OIB – BEACH LIFE!

Growing up in NWPA and WNY-

Vacation time was almost always a week at the beach!

In the early years –

It was in New Jersey –

Simply – the closest and easiest to get to from WNY!

Then – it was the Outer Banks!

Always – I had that internal feeling-

Someday – I hope to have this as an everyday part of my life!

Today, we have that opportunity –

We have moved to Cameron Woods Community-

In normal traffic –

A ten to twelve-minute drive to the beach from the mainland.

Above – Sherry and I –

We volunteer for the Protection of Sea Turtles!

From mid-May to mid-October –

We are on the beach almost every day!

Our dream of living near the beach has come true!

Our happy place-

On the beach – chairs- and shade from the hot sun.

I have to be careful – sunscreen is a must for me.

I visit the dermatologist every four months.

My Irish heritage is susceptible to pre-cancerous skin cancer from the sun.

So – I enjoy the sun, sand, and surf –

But I am also aware of the hot sun!

We have walked to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox a half dozen times!

And we have walked with family and friends!

It is a quiet walk –

No houses – just sand, surf, and dunes!

The pier at OIB-

Oftentimes, we go here to sit in the shade and watch the surfers!

When there are strong storms out to sea –

The waves here are a surfer’s paradise.

In 2024, we celebrated our 75th birthdays –

On a family beach vacation on OIB!

In our move to NC-

We wanted it to be a day’s drive- 6 to 8 hours for the family to visit!

And they all have been here numerous times,

Even though busy life- jobs and school limits-

Their time here.

We, in turn, travel back-

So every few months we reconnect!

Today – our home –

This is more than likely –

The last time we moved!

We have either built – or bought –

SIX homes!

This is the sixth!

Our BEACH DREAM IS HERE!

In our case –

“DREAMS COME TRUE”!

Papa’s World – Seasons- beach life!

Living on the mainland of N.C. –

Near the S.C. border-

We have what I consider the four seasons – but warmer!

We spent the first 50 years of our lives-

In WNY and NWPA!

We were in what is called “THE SNOW BELT”!

65 miles South of Buffalo, N.Y.

And – honestly,

I have always dreamed of living near a warm sandy beach!

I was tired of the cold, ice, and snow!

I love the green pine trees –

And bushes that remain green during what is considered winter here.

Here – the day starts out cold –

If 35 degrees is cold –

And by noon, it is in the 50s!

I can live with that –

Not having to deal with snow, ice, and blowing cold winds!

50 to 60 degrees in late November!

The lawns are starting to turn a light amber brown –

But the oak trees are green –

The ferns are green.

Winter is almost here.

I can live with this!

A cold winter day –

Walking near the beach!

But – it is doable!

The beaches are empty.

The sound of the surf and birds-

Soft white clouds against the blue skies of N.C.

We are in the South!

This is winter for us!

Once the sun is up and well on its way to high noon-

It is warm enough to walk on the beach.

Yes – we have what I call four seasons!

This is our dream come true in our later senior years after retirement!

And to age as healthily as we could into these years-

Twenty years ago, we chose this supplement.

Soon – we hope – family will once again join us for Spring Break!

The warm days are ahead for springtime in the Carolinas!

Papa’s World – Staying in touch!

Friends: Bob, Pam, Sherry, Diane, and Papa.

Friends are important to us.

Over the years –

These friendships have grown and flourished.

We are blessed to have many people we consider friends.

From back in our DAL-TILE DAYS –

The Barndts – April and Brian.

Sherry and I worked with Brian –

They have visited the area several times in the past few years, and we have gotten together!

We left in 1999, and in 2012, the plane closed, and they moved to Gettysburg –

To one of our factories!

Today, they remain friends –

Again, we are blessed!

We have a group of friends from WNY and NWPA –

In the late 1980s –

We moved to Pleasant Acres Drive in Portville, NY.

Here we lived next door to Mike and Carol, and across the street were Cindy and Buck!

Jim and Dottie were just across the border in Eldred, Pa.and I grew up with them.

We all have since moved – six of us in NC.

And two still in WNY!

DECADES OF FRIENDSHIPS!

We are blessed!

We all lived back in NVA-

And today, two are in SC and four of us are in NC.

We still get together –

Blessings for our group!

Sherry and I have established new friends through our volunteering work in the protection –

Of Sea Turtles!

Here is a group of us on trash pick-up day on OIB!

New friends are new blessings!

Dottie and Cindy, and their daughters.

Decades of friendships!

Papa’s World – Community and Beach!

Good morning from Papa’s World and the entrance to our COMMUNITY!

Pictured here – (Sherry – middle right) – is the Cameron Woods Community-

Annual TURKEY WALK for Thanksgiving!

This was the fourth walk – every year since we moved in!

While I could not walk this year-

It was a good turnout, as it has grown every year from six to what you see here.

Also note – no children – that is because there are only a few in the entire neighborhood!’

We are mostly retired or soon to be!

Sunset between the trees in our backyard!

We have beautiful early morning sunrises and sunsets here.

One of the two reasons we selected this location –

I wanted a front porch to sit on –

And ours is in the shade almost the whole day!

I can sit out there most of the day if I want to.

The other reason is that Sherry wanted an office, and we got one!

Sitting on the front porch – seeing the sunrise –

Sitting on the back patio – seeing the sunsets!

The front porch I wanted!

The glider where I sit!

Protected, as you can see from the wet sidewalk from the rain!

Early morning sunrise from the front porch!

The beach – The pier and surf, and sand!

We always dreamed of beach living!

While we are on the mainland –

Ten minutes without traffic and we can stand here!

This is the life we have chosen.

We are blessed!

This is OCEAN ISLE BEACH with the causeway bridge we cross every day if we want to.

We are living the dream.

Never did we think this would come to be!

Our lives has changed!

FAMILY AND FRIENDS are still important to us.

And we built a home to accommodate both.

THE GOOD WITCH- SHERRY and JUST PAPA!

Papa’s World – Being a senior!

My dream since I was in my twenties!

I would kid to my wife –

“I WANT TO SELL HOT DOGS ON THE BEACH”!

We would take yearly vacations –

To a beach.

I found myself counting down the days as soon as we got there.

I formed an idea in my head-

“Someday” – I will be able to spend every day at the beach if I choose to.

I would be the one sitting on the sand and watching those folks –

Packing up after a week and leaving to go back home!

Our SENIOR years are now just like that.

We live maybe four or five miles from the beach.

No traffic and in ten minutes we are standing on the sand.

My dream has come true in my senior years!

We still travel back to NVA for the holidays.

And they all travel down to spend time with us.

Our plan for moving South-

Was to be within a six to eight-hour drive –

For us to go home-

Or family to come down to us.

As we advance in our senior years –

We might have to curtail the traveling!

But for now,

We are still able to do the trips back and forth.

Home is where our hearts are.

Blue skies- white clouds –

Sunshine- warm weather-

Hardly any snow or ice.

Yes- it can and is cold during periods of time.

But with a jacket, gloves, and scarf-

I can manage-

Taking them off as the day warms up!

Being a senior-

It seems that the cold affects me more and more each year!

My two sons –

Troy on the left and Shawn on the right-

Still live back in NWPA where they grew up!

Both have been down once or twice.

And both will come for more visits.

Love them always.

That is why our beach chairs sit high rather than low to the sand! LOL

Being a SENIOR –

And for the past TWENTY YEARS-

We have taken this supplement –

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Papa’s World – Writing blogs!

My blogs are about Family – Friends – Events and Past Memories!

This is NEBO LUTHERAN CHURCH in MOUNT JEWETT, PA.

The church sits on a hill called MOUNT NEBO!

Surrounded by a cemetery of the Swedish ancestors who built the –

An eight-sided church in the 1880s.

Mount Jewett is a settlement comprised of Swedish immigrants!

The church itself is modeled after a historic eight-sided church –

from their native Sweden.

The men and women of the town put their resources and time

Into constructing the EIGHT SIDED CHURCH!

Everything is left inside, and services are held there on special occasions.

Sherry attended confirmation classes here and lived just a couple of miles away!

The pews inside – some are separated by the columns –

That comes straight down in the middle of the pews.

So you either enter from the right or left side.

A traveling artist of the 1800s –

Painted a church biblical scene behind the altar.

It is still there to this day.

Almost all of Sherry’s past family is buried there.

This part of the blog is for family and future generations to come –

To know and understand the heritage of their ancestors!

WRITING BLOGS!

Sherry and I are volunteers for the Protection of Sea Turtles for Ocean Isle Beach.

Here we gather for a picture after volunteering for trash pickup along the streets of OIB!

Our volunteer work begins mid-May when the Sea Turtles begin coming ashore to lay their eggs!

There are many facets to the organization-

Sherry does NEST VERIFICATION –

She is scheduled for twenty-four hours a day-

Midnight to midnight.

During that twenty-four-hour period, she is on call –

And must be on the beach within fifteen minutes after a TURTLE CRAWL is reported –

Or a confirmed Sea Turtle Sighting!

The team meets at the beach entrance and then walks the beach –

To where the event has happened.

They then must dig and locate the eggs.

Once they have done this –

The leader of all the teams –

Verifies the eggs are there and if they can remain at the site or need to be moved-

To a safer location above the tide line.

If they move it –

It must be duplicated exactly as found, and measurements taken for width –

Depth from top to bottom.

A hole is dug to those measurements-

The eggs are then gently taken out –

And put into a bucket!

The eggs go back into the new hole-

Exactly how they were taken out.

This ensures that the hatchlings are not disturbed and the gender of the Sea Turtles remains –

Like they were laid.

The temperature inside the chamber determines the genders!

They then construct a unit that prevents predators from digging up the nest/
A barrier is then put around the area and signage attached –

Stating this is a protected nest,

And fines can be leveled by authorities.

Also, each nest I’d sponsored and –

Lamented signs are posted for the sponsors.

There are times that the team finishes one nest and proceeds to another!

Whatever happens in that twenty-four-hour period is that team’s responsibility!

THE GOOD WITCH AND ME- JUST TOM!

Papa’s World – Living – IN THE SOUTH!

The beach – the ocean – warmer climate- hardly any snow or ice-

Golfing in the winter months –

Walking in sunshine with a coat and scarf-

Getting too warm and taking them off!

Blue skies – white fluffy clouds-

Watching thunderstorms rolling in!

Shows – music – entertainment-

Friends nearby.

These are just a few of the many things I associate with living in the South!

We wanted to be within a day’s drive from family in NVA!

The deep south was too far.

Being close to beaches was a plus.

Shopping – doctors and medical facilities.

Cities we could travel to if we wanted.

We chose the border of N.C. and S.C.

It can be hot in mid-summer –

But that is offset by being comfortable in mid-winter.

Our decades-old friends are 35 minutes to 3.5 hours away.

We still manage to get together several times a year.

The closer ones are about once a month.

We have made many new friends –

And other close friends from NVA have moved nearby!

We have downsized to one level –

With enough room for family!

In a community that is both quiet and has protected wetlands.

You see here behind the house,

Trees that are protected!

We feel we made the right choice!

We are happy here.

Friends and family visit.

The weather is to our liking-

Neither one of us likes the cold.

Andrea and Troy – my oldest son!

They will visit once again in the future!

Sunsets – this is our life in the South!

Papa’s World – Sitting on the front porch!

One of my main reasons to sit on the front porch –

Is waving or saying “HELLO” to folks passing by!

Our home has that porch –

It was the one thing I wanted when we picked out the location!

It would be in shade most of the daylight hours!

And – if it rained – if the wind wasn’t blowing-

You could just sit there and enjoy the storm.

Our home in Cameron Woods Community-

Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

Here you can see the wet sidewalk, grass,

And decorative stones-

Which are all wet after a rain shower!

The glider with the two pillows is where I sit!

And you can see it is dry!

Hot days with a breeze-

The shade makes it bearable to sit!

In the evenings, you can observe the fantastic sunsets we have here!

The same for the sunrises-

YES- I am up before dawn every day!

The dawn of another day at our house!

Front-porch sitting, I have done all my life.

Sherry’s bucket list for the new house-

Was an “OFFICE” that we could close off-

With floor space to put down a –

Queen-size mattress for company (mostly family)!

With the extra bedrooms and queen-size pull-out couch –

A love seat that pulls out to a single-

Along with the office-

We can sleep –

ELEVEN PEOPLE!

The only regret we have is either another full bathroom-

Or a half bath!

Another beginning of a day from the front of the house!

We are just two miles from the beach as the crow flies!

Of course, the ICW is also between us and the ocean.

We also have an enclosed sunroom – Lanai –

In the rear, which houses many plants –

And is fully ready with a fan and a small heater –

To sit there for the four seasons!

Papa and Sherry are walking on the beach.

Neither one of us swims in the ocean anymore!

But we walk on the surf and sit in the shade on the beach!

Five girls and one boy!

Today, she is a college graduate with a degree in Environmental Science.

Working for a large national Environmental firm and living in Fredericksburg, VA.

One of the blessed memories of our life together!

At our home in Brambleton, VA.

Taylor, on the left, and Cassidy, the fraternal twins.

And behind them is Sarah –

The youngest of her own family and all are cousins.

They always dressed up and played together.

Today, Sarah is a freshman in college,

And the twins are freshmen in high school.

Another blessed memory in our lives together!

Sherry is an SSC with the Juice Plus Company.

For 20 years, we have chosen this supplement for our health and nutrition.

After reading all the published research –

We decided this is the one that we would take and age as healthily as we could-

Into our SENIOR years.

Here is one of the many conferences we have attended –

Over the years, across the country.

Another blessed memory of our lives together.

Ella and Bode –

When he was young –

He adored Ella!

Here she holds him after one of her H.S. soccer games.

He would spend the whole game cheering her on.

Today, he is in fifth grade, and she has graduated from College.

And is teaching PHYSED to grammar school students!

Another blessed memory in our lives together.

I CHOOSE WISELY!

On one of our many excursions into Washington, D.C.

Here, Sherry stands at the Lincoln Memorial-

With the Washington Monument in the background on the mall.

We often took family and visitors on tours-

Walking all over after riding the metro in.

We loved the city –

And all the history and the museums.

Another blessed memory in our lives together.

The day my youngest son, Shawn, and Trisha were married.

They both live back in NWPA, where they were raised.

But have been down twice for visits!

Another blessed memory in our lives together.

A LIITLE HUMOR! LOL!

Papa’s World – Thoughts and Humor!

I have always thought this way.

It is up to me to make my life what it is.

I think back on the choices I have made,

And one choice —another way — would change my life completely!

But with everything said –

I am happy with my life!

As true today as it was all these years!

I count my blessings and live my life one day at a time!

My dream of moving to the borders of N.C. and S.C. –

Was to be able to golf!

We have achieved this dream.

Once every two or three weeks –

Satisfied my need!

Living here –

It can be year-round!

LOL – A sense of humor goes a long way!

YEP – I RELATE TO THAT!

Our granddaughter –

Cassidy –

Made varsity as a Freshman Cheerleader.

She is also in gymnastics!

Here she is at sunset on OIB by the church overlooking the marsh.

Such a gifted little girl!

When long-time friends meet up after golf!

The ending of a day with the sunset!

Here in Cameron Woods Community –

We get Sunrises and Sunsets from in front of our home.

The journey of the sun across the sky –

Tends to be like our journey of life here near the ocean and the borders of N.C and S.C.

Our life is living one day at a time!

Sherry, as to what I call “THE GOOD WITCH” of Lindley Lane!

Here she is dressed up for our community’s Halloween party at the Community Center.

Sherry and Papa –

I WENT AS “JUST TOM”! LOL

Many times in the past, I have dressed up. But this year, I just could not get into it!

OLD AGE – SENIOR MENTALITY –

But I was happy to be “JUST TOM”!

So many times I have heard “THINGS” that are better left unsaid!

Those “THINGS” are just not true when checked out –

Yet that does not seem to bother that person!

I ask “WHY” to myself?

I have no answer –

That is my “WHY” I do not watch news stations –

Or listen to the radio podcasts.

Life is too short to be all wrapped up

In beliefs that go contrary to my beliefs.

The TRUTH is out there – just take the time to find it!

A POSITIVE outlook on life for me!

Our happy place – our home and our front porch-

Where I sit and watch the neighbors go by and wave.

LIFE IS GOOD!

For twenty years, we have practiced this concept.

As SENIORS, we are aging and taking care of our own HEALTH and NUTRITION!

Papa’s World – Together as ONE!

The day we were married –

June 25th. 1982 –

Began our life together as ONE!

This describes our life as ONE together!

I believe all marriages have their ups and downs.

But there is always conversation to work things out.

This picture was drawn by Cassidy when she was 11 years old.

It is framed and sits on a dresser in our bedroom.

A little girl’s gift of art –

And we proudly show this as it has special memories of small children –

A theme we both cherish in our life together as ONE!

We lived this era of life!

LOVE – PEACE and HAPPINESS-

Brings us together as ONE in our beliefs!

FAMILY – Andrea – Troy – Trisha and her daughter – Autum-

Brings us to our family ideals.

We love them all –

Shawn and Sherry –

Sitting – relaxing, and this brings me joy!

We are ONE with family!

Our beliefs –

Leave no family behind!

Mother and daughters –

Debby and Tammy-

Their bond runs deep –

FAMILY – always since the day we married!

The years have passed –

The commitment remains the same-

ONE is what we believe.

Papa’s World – Memories in pictures!

LOL – but when you are in your senior years, there is a lot of truth here!

When family comes to visit –

My two sons and their families!

Important to us because they live so far away!

MEMORY IN A PICTURE!

YES, I CAN AND HAVE MANY TIMES! LOL

Family in Lynchburg, Va.

For six years, the two oldest granddaughters played college soccer in this town.

One at the University of Lynchburg and one at Radolph College.

Many times over the years, we rented Airbnb’s to stay for senior nights and games.

This is a MEMORY IN A PICTURE!

MY GOOD THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

When our three oldest granddaughters came for a visit.

Maddy, in the center, graduated from college –

As did Ella, far right –

Sarah, on the left, is a freshman in college.

A brilliant sunset as they came running down the street laughing!

Papa and Sherry –

On the beach on OAHU!

We really would like to return to the Big Island!

This is a past memory!

Cindy and Sherry are on our trip to Northern California.

We toured Lake Tahoe-

San Francisco –

And the wine country.

With stops at the giant Redwoods and Reno!

A cherished past memory!

The house we had built and lived in for 14 1/2 years –

In Brambleton, Va.

COVID and the Pandemic hit –

The 401K took a huge loss-

But this house gained so much that we decided to cash in!

We sold almost everything inside –

Packed up what remained into storage.

Then, for four months stayed back and forth with the families.

End of September 2020 –

We moved to North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

We searched and could not find a house we liked or an area we wanted to live in.

By chance, we stumbled upon Cameron Woods Community in OIB – mainland.

We bought a lot and in nine months total – moved in!

Today we live here –

Our home is completed –

And our journey ended happily for us.

We discovered this place during our exploration of the area before moving into our new home.

Situated on the borders of N.C. and S.C. –

It is a wooded area and marsh with trails – wooden walkways –

A fishing pier, and you can view the boats traveling up and down the ICW.

We have taken family and friends to this peaceful place.

A LASTING PAST MEMORY!

Papa’s World – Growing up – streets of Eldred!

This is the school I attended from first through fourth grade.

It was built in the 1800s!

I walked from North Main Street to South Main Street.

I do not know just how far that was –

But in Winter, it was cold!

The hill behind the school was a cemetery-

But also sled riding!

The elementary classrooms were on the first floor.

I do not remember much beyond the first floor,

But there was also a basement.

Second grade was where I first loved books.

Our teacher would read the Bobbsey Twins and their adventures.

I loved that part of class!

Later on in the 9th. Grade it was IVAHOE!

First grade was in the front, and we could look out on the large yard –

That was used for recess.

Ringed by huge Maple trees!

Just around the corner on Mechanic Street was a penny candy store –

Called “AUNT NELLS”!

A favorite place to stop and buy candy!

Many memories for me here.

The firehall –

About a block from my home on North Main Street –

Every night at 10 pm. –

The siren would blow, and “CURFEW” was to be home and off the streets!

As far as I know –

It still blows every night!

Upstairs is where I went to study for my Hunter Safety Course.

I went hunting with my father and my brother-in-law, Bill Luce.

It was with my father up at the end of Barden Brook where the sharp curve to the left is –

Up over the ride on the right –

I tasted my first “BUCK FEVER”!

We had just started down the other side when a six-point Buck walked in front of us!

I emptied my 30.6 – Remington of six bullets-

I was shaking so hard that I missed all six times.

I only ever shot one thing, and that was a rabbit.

I hit the back legs –

It was trying to crawl –

I stepped on the hind legs, and it screamed!

THAT WAS IT FOR ME –

I never hunted again, and I do not own a gun.

My sister Donna –

Who was fifteen years older than me-

She, along with my grandma –

Raised me until she married Bill Luce –

He became the chief of police and mayor of Eldred.

My mother worked at the Viko and then Alcas – now CUTCO.

My dad was a supervisor for South Penn Oil Company.

I remember him taking me to work on the leases –

I would ride with bulldozers with a couple of his men.

I think OSHA would frown on that now!

But being in the woods-

Pulling the tool shed – dog house with that dozer-

They are sweet memories for me.

Bill took me hunting many times.
One time, I got cold and went back to the car.

I played the radio, and when he got back –

The car would not start.

I had run the battery down.

He did not get mad, but next time I had to stay with him!

My brother Roger is on the right.

I do not know who the women were talking to, Sherry!

This was in The Villages before he passed away.

He graduated from the Eldred H.S. some ten years before I graduated from O-E H.S.

He was my HERO growing up.

He left for college, and I moved into his bedroom at the front of the house.

I slept on the floor whenever he came back.

I was eight years old when he left.

Before he passed away –

He would ask us to come and spend the winter with him in THE VILLAGES!

I shall always fondly remember those times as we grew closer.

The WWII museum – and next to it, the expansion.

But when I was growing up

This was Frisbee’s insurance and Slavins’ gas station and furniture store!

I was allowed to roller skate down to Slavin’s gas –

But later, when I got my first bike-

I could go all over town as long as I was home before the street lights came on.

This was maybe a block from my front porch.
The sidewalks were cracked, crooked, but I skated them

Long before I was born,

The main street in the middle of town

Other than the vacant stores now and the cars here-

It looks much like this today.

The little NWPA town I grew up in.

In the foothills of the Alegany Mountains and the Alleghany River.

Papa’s World – Living life in the South!

After we moved to NVA in 1999-

Around 2010-

We purchased our first Tower Garden-

A growing system that uses water, air, and nutrients –

NO SOIL!

IN the late spring – summer and early fall –

This worked well with the temperatures!

But during the winter –

As you see in the above picture-

We moved it inside the garage-

With grow lights and an aquarium heater.

That also worked.

In 2021, we moved into our new home in Cameron Woods Community!

Above this is the back patio.

It is here that we set up the Tower Garden in 2021.

It has been producing ever since.

Every four to six months-

We tear it apart –

Clean it up –

And then start all over again.

In reality –

It now produces twelve months a year, and we are now four and one-half years later.

Sherry – Dottie and Cindy.

We all now live in the state of N.C.

Having moved South from Pa. and NYS.

Friends and neighbors for decades and decades!

We try to get together every so often or go on trips!

Friendships – laughter and close buddies for all these years, and now living in the South!

The skies of the South in the West are close to the Atlantic Ocean in our community!

Because of the curvature of the coast from Charleston, S.C. –

To Wilmington, N.C.-

The back of our home faces almost due South!

This is looking to the West from the road in front of our home.

It is rare to live on the East Coast and yet have the back of your house face South!

Since 2021, Sherry and I have attended.

This year, our friends Bob and Pam –

Have rented a home nearby-

For the next year.

Taking a break from six-plus years of RV life on the road.

Pam in the red – Sherry and my grade school friend Bob.

We have been in contact through the years –

Reunions and seven years ago –

They stopped in their RV and spent some time with us in NVA!

This festival was a first for them.

Three days and FIVE LIVE BANDS!

This was the Friday evening opening band and the community’s free concert!

There were easily five to six hundred folks here!

The sun is about to set –

The music started after the color guard presented colors and the National Anthem was sung!

Here is Sherry in gray and Pam in red.

This was an excellent band and a great start to full two days of activities.

Forty plus years ago –

Two hippies walked the beach carrying a mailbox and garden tools –

To install here on a dune overlooking the ocean to the front-

And Cherry Point and Little River to the rear.

All those journals have been kept over the years!

Here we are now in the present –

LOL – A BIT OF HUMOR TO START YOUR DAY!

It has been FIVE YEARS since we moved down to the borders of N.C. and S.C.

We came during the COVID pandemic.

Streets and stores were empty, although open.

We saw the worst and the beginnings of the recovery.

But we looked on it as a new phase of our life together.

Also – a place for families to come and relax-

Go to the beach and explore.

This was the beginning of ENJOYING OUR AREA!

At that time, we traded in the car we had had for almost eight years-

And bought another Toyota Hybrid.

RAV4!

We still drive it today – 41.4 MPG!

We said our goodbyes to the LITTLE ONES and the OLDER ONES.

It was sad –

But adventures awaited them in the future-

Coming down to see us, and we’re up to see them all.

But walking the surf –

Relaxing in the shade of umbrellas-

Knowing we can do this every day!

Several friends from back in NVA have already built houses and moved down here.

Our old friends have lived here since the 1990s.

Here – pictured are Bob and Pam, and they are leasing for a year to see if they like it!

Debby – Sherry and Tammy –

They have visited often, along with the grandkids.

Papa’s World – Living near the border!

After searching –

And moving to the border of N.C and S.C.-

We have found our happiness!

The big drop in the 401K in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic-

Caused us to rethink about living in NVA!

The housing market expanded and increased values –

Led us to sell the home we built and move South!

We wanted to be within a day’s drive of the Families –

But be out of the Ice, Snow, and Cold!

We both dislike snow and Ice.

It was time to move and be seniors –

Enjoy what years we have left.

We miss the families, but we go back often, and they come down.

For nine months, we had this view from the fourth floor of a condo –

In Ocean Keyes, North Myrtle Beach.

We walked to the beach one half mile every day!

Nine months here, and then we moved into our newly built home-

In Cameron Woods Community in Ocean Isle Beach –

On the mainland side of the ICW!

The new home we moved into –

We chose to be in the middle of shopping-

Golf courses –

and close to two beaches!

We are about seven miles from the border of S.C.

We are just a couple of miles from the ICW!

Our church is about five miles away.

Shopping within seven miles in either direction.

Most of the time, no snow or ice!

Just once in five years, we had a couple of inches of snow!

Within days, it was all gone and back into the mid-50s!

These past five years have gone by so fast!

But it is what we want!

We are still after twenty years –

Maintaining our healthy lifestyle!

Our choice was and still is after twenty years!

Papa’s World – A place in the sun!

What is called “THE GROIN” on the East side of Ocean Isle Beach.

This multi-million dollar project was completed a few years ago.

Large granite boulders were placed 900 feet straight out into the ocean-

With a 90-degree turn –

This section of the “L” shape is short-

Then the dredging of the Shalotte channel began –

And the sand was blown onto the beach West of the GROIN!

This was about a mile and hundreds of feet wide!

The beach erosion in the past wiped out the ends of First and Second streets!

This design is designed to prevent that erosion from happening.

The project succeeded –

However, going East beyond the bouldered wall-

The erosion has devastated that area of the beach.

Huge sandbags and sand have been carried in.

That whole end is most likely to collapse –

Placing multi-million-dollar homes in extreme danger.

It is a mess, and lawsuits have been filed.

NOTE: Those homes were built there after the “GROIN” was put in place!

MOTHER NATURE: It is sad to see this happening – time will tell!

A PLACE IN THE SUN!

My sons and their families-

A visit a couple of years ago-

Here we were hiking a trail near Cherry Point.

Showing them a PLACE IN THE SUN far from the cold weather back in NWPA!

It can be nice there for a few months-

But the cold is the reason Sherry and I went to the South-

On the border of N.C. and S.C.

A PLACE IN THE SUN!

For healthy living!

SUNSET from our patio in the back yard.

Winter here is sunny, with blue skies and white clouds –

Most Winter days.

Here you see a late fall day-

Or an early winter day.

Almost zero snow and ice.

I bundle up – scarf and winter jacket-

Sometimes ear muffs-

But after walking a distance in the sun-

Slowly, I lose the scarf and earmuffs!

I do not like the cold-

I am comfortable at 74 degrees inside and 77 outside!

A PLACE IN THE SUN!

We chose our place in the sun –

Ocean Isle Beach!

Here you see the mainland and then the Causeway Bridge.

The town of OIB is after crossing the bridge.

We live back in the forest,

A couple of miles before crossing the bridge in the forest!

A little over ten minutes and we are here.

Sunset Beach is a couple of miles away, and we have access to that area also.

All shopping – gas – parks – box stores,

And multiple golf courses are within fifteen minutes of our house!

Wilmington is 45 minutes, and NMB is less than thirty minutes.

Papa’s World – Blogs – Thoughts and good times!

We moved here in 2021-

The weather here is much warmer than in NVA or WNY –

Where we first lived.

Also – born and raised in NWPA –

We had a few months of ideal weather and then cold and snow!

Neither one of us enjoys that weather –

We both like to be warm.

Living here can be hot and humid.

You just learn when to go out,

And you can always head to the beach.

There – with the wind and shade –

It is comfortable for us.

Walking the beach with a shade hat on –

The surf on your feet and a breeze-

That is a WHY for us.

Coffee in the morning is a must for me!

Just one cup!

But – I also like a cup of tea-

Nothing in it and only cream in my coffee!

My mother and grandmother drank tea as I was growing up!

Later, Mom drank coffee!

My grandmother introduced me to “COFFEE SOUP”!

Wierd as it sounds –

It was during the DEPRESSION thing.

When hard times came –

She would make and bake bread!

As a way to substitute for other items-

She would slice a thick piece of homemade bread-

Then pour some coffee over it with sugar and milk from the cows.

They called this “COFFEE SOUP” and sometimes some thick bacon.

Which came from raising pigs.

Most everything was done on the farm.

My father would take two slices of homemade white bread –

Butter both pieces –

And cut a thick slice of onion and make –

“BREAD AND BUTTER ONION SANDWICHES” for his lunch pail –

On the oil leases where he was a supervisor!

This also went back to his upbringing during the “DEPRESSION”!

Our way for over twenty years of healthy eating!

THIRTY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES are going directly into the bloodstream from powder capsules.

FAMILY – OLDEST GRANDCHILDREN!

Papa’s World – Together – our life!

June 25th. 1982 – a second marriage for both of us.

Combining Sherry’s two daughters –

And my two sons.

Back at that time –

We had no money –

We both worked for AOTC –

In Olean, N.Y.

We lived in the country at the farthest point from the Portville School District.

Life was busy –

We would often load the kids up in our twelve-passenger van-

Pack food for picnics or overnight trips.

We lived on a budget yet tried to have as much fun as we could as a family.

The house where we lived had a long gravel driveway and in winter-

Provided a 1/10th of a mile sled ride.

We had a backyard, and on the far end –

A fire pit for cooking out and a bonfire at night!

Hardly any lights in the country and a star-filled sky at night!

We had dated for a year and a half.

Both of us are waiting for the divorce to be done.

It was a time that I would not trade –

We had new friends.

But the house was small –

We were going to find one closer to the school –

It was about 14 miles round-trip every time we had to take the girls to activities.

And for my sons who still lived with their mother –

20 to 25 miles round trip.

After five years, we found a home close to the school and closer to my two sons.

We lived in that house for 12 1/2 years.

In that time, the kids all graduated from H.S.

We were empty nesters, and we decided we needed a change.

We both transferred within the company to NVA!

We would end up moving three times – build two houses while working in NVA!

Between both of us-

We had 79 1/2 years of service to the same company at retirement.

During this time, we found a supplement with research-

To help us age as healthily as we can into our senior years.

Now – over twenty years later –

We are seniors and still take this every day!

Sherry’s site with email and phone number-

She decided to have this as a part-time business.

Papa – third from the left, and Sherry second from the right!

Being retired – and both closer to 80 than 70-

We volunteer – The Protection for Sea Turtles –

And the Food Pantry for our church.

Here we are after volunteering for the pick up of trash for OIB.

We covered first and second streets and side streets between Lee Street and Charlotte Street!

In July 2024 –

Our family celebrated our 75th birthdays on the beach!

With our friends, the McBrides,

After a day of golfing.

PAPA and SHERRY – JUNE 25th, 1982!

Papa’s World – A heritage on Sherry’s family!

Sherry was raised in a little town in Pa. called Mount Jewett!

Back in the 1800s,

Swedish immigrants settled here and actually built the town-

Along with an eight-sided replica of a church back in Sweden!

This church is called Mount Nebo, and during special times of the year, it still holds services!

Every year in August, over the past 50 years –

The community holds what is known as THE SWEDISH FESTIVAL!

Usually lasting three or four days!

A large parade with marching bands and local fire departments!

Organized events and a chicken BBQ!

When her mother was still alive-

We would go and spend the week with her!

There was a local grocery store called “BILLS” just up the street.

And – we always put an order in to take back home-

“CITY CHICKEN LEGS”! which were made there in the meat department!

In our 43-plus years of marriage –

This was always a dinner we had with her mother and father!

After her mother passed away, we decided to try to make our own.

It is made out of PORK and VEAL ( WE ADDED PRIME CUT OF STEAK) –

And then dipped in egg batter –

And dipped in a mixture of seasoned bread crumbs!

The meat is threaded on wooden skewers –

Here in our home in Brambleton –

We make the CITY CHICKEN LEGS.

This dish originated during the GREAT DEPRESSION!

When pork was more affordable than chicken.

It was made to look like Chicken Legs breaded!

Back at that time, it was a POLISH AMERICAN DISH!

https://sfitzsimmons.juiceplus.com

Cindy and Sherry are sitting on the patio at her mother’s house during the SWEDISH FESTIVAL!

I do not know how this became a family tradition-

As her mother’s mother was born in Sweden –

And her father’s ancestors were Scottish-German.

But we always had the dish during the festival when we visited!

Just looking at these pictures of what our CITY CHICKEN LEGS looked like-

Make my mouth water!

After we moved to OIB and Cameron Woods Community-

We have not made them again.

And after her mother passed away and the house was sold-

We have not been back!

Our choice as a supplement for health and nutrition!

In the mid-70s, we played softball together-

And we also both worked for AOTC-DAL TILE!

We raised our kids and took vacations to the beach together.

Sherry – Jim and I all transferred to Va..

He to Va, Beach and us to NVA!

Today we are all retired and still try to get together several times a year.

Our home on Minerva Street in Brambleton, Va.

This was taken from our neighbor’s front yard.

Brambleton was full of folks who worked for the state and the federal government.

The couple who lived here –

She was a stay-at-home mom, and he was the Director of Counterintelligence Worldwide for the FBI.

He retired and moved away a few years before we did.

My grandpa, David Aiken, and wife, Nora.

I never knew him, as he passed before I was born in 1949!

However, I have his name for my middle name.

My grandma lived with us, and I remember sitting on her lap on the front porch-

And seeing a boy walking down the street to the school.

I asked her when I would be able to walk to school-

And she said, ” I’d be in a couple of years when you turn six!”

That was my very first memory of her!

PAPA’S WORLD – A LOOK BACK!

Papa’s World – Life at one day at a time.

Living life one day at a time- living life doing it my way!

I have been doing this since I had my heart attack all those years ago.

At the time –

I had six more months to work and then retire at 65!

I had open heart surgery –

And four by-passes!

I never went back to work!

Since that time –

I came to realize you never know from day to day-

What might be the last day you are alive!

It was then that I decided to continue my journey on healthy living.

I had changed my diet after 40 years of eating fast food before my heart attack!

It was this change I had made that to this day –

Convinces me that is the reason I survived my “WIDOW MAKER HEART ATTACK”!

These capsules helped me build my body –

They provided nutrients that, when taken –

Go directly into the bloodstream.

The doctors and surgeons all told me –

I WAS THE HEALTHIEST HEART ATTACK PATIENT THEY EVER HAD!

They wanted me to come back for a study, and I declined!

On a Monday at 10 am. –

I had the four bypasses!

At 6:30 pm.. I was standing up.

Later that night, I was assisted in walking!

I never went to the step-down unit-

Instead, I went to the room I checked out of.

The next morning, they removed all the wires from my chest, and I was walking with Sherry!

On Wednesday at 1pm.-

I WAS HOME!

And started walking several times a day up and down our stairs –

And around in each room for THIRTY MINUTES each time.

I was home in a little over 48 hours from the start of my surgery!

Now, I am convinced that had I not made changes to my diet and taken this supplement-

I would not have survived.

I continue to this day –

My recent cholesterol was 99!

My Triglycedeides were 57!

LDL was 54!

HDL was 32, which means I need to walk more!

I have been on MEDS for ELEVEN and ONE HALF years –

Because of the HEART ATTACK and the damage it caused!

I now weigh five pounds less than I did the day I graduated in 1967.

Since that day –

I HAVE CHOSEN TO LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME!

LIVING LIFE DOING IT MY WAY!

And that is the name of my blog-

PAPA’S WORLD: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

And I am convinced this is my “WHY” to live that way!

Since that time all those years ago-

The company has developed this powder to mix with water.

It tastes like FRUIT juice!

But – I still take the capsules –

Have for over twenty years.

Because Sherry has a hard time swallowing any pill or capsule –

She switched to the above mixture –

They both do the same thing.

They are absorbed directly into the bloodstream!

Yes – this is me today!

A survivor of a heart attack that should have been my last day alive!

I will always take this supplement-

I will always believe this is what I did to allow me to be here today!

LIVING LIFE ONE DAY AT A TIME!

I was on second shift at the Olean Tile Company.

3 pm. to 1 am.

Ten straight hours a day, and breaks were on the fly!

Troy and I would walk up the street every day –

No one would be home there, but my sister lived next door, and she was home.

My parents had the Bradford Era delivered every day, and I would read it while Troy played.

Those were special days for me.

He was always curious –

He would constantly take things apart and put them back together again

Today, he can build a house from the ground up-

Doing everything!

He got that from my father, not me.

Troy on the left and his brother Shawn.

Troy still lives in the area where he grew up.

He is still in construction and a builder to this day.

Troy – to you on this special day –

HAPPY BIRTHDAY-

In my heart, I shall always cherish that little hand squeezing my fingers as we walk up the street.

The little blond-haired boy who loved taking things apart and putting them back together again.

The man you are today – a free spirit and a heart of gold.

Troy and Andrea –

On the beach, the last time they visited.

Until I see you again –

Hugs – many more years to come!

From both of us –

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Love ya!

Dad.

Papa’s World – Living life in the South!

We spent the first 50 years of our lives in NWPA and WNY!

Here – from left to right –

My friends and neighbors!

Jimmy – from the same town I grew up in, NWPA!

We played softball together and worked together!

Mike – our next-door neighbor in WNY in Portville!

We played many funny tricks on each other, and he and his wife still live in WNY!

Buck – another neighbor in Portville – who was the first to leave and go South to N.C.

He and Cindy – his wife –

Have traveled the world with us!

Today, they live but 38 miles from us.

They are the main reason we came to N.C.

Some HUMOR for today!

Here is where we came in 2020 after selling our home in Brambleton, VA.

This is a three-bedroom, two-bath condo on the fourth floor with two elevators right outside this door.

The view through those glass sliding doors –

Overlooks a large lake with fountains and is a half mile long, and a walk to the beach entrance-

In Ocean Keyes – North Myrtle Beach.

Where those glass sliding doors are – to the right is another set off the master bedroom –

And is a completely screened-in lanai with fantastic views.

We were very happy here and once thought of buying here!

But – no garage and limited storage space.

Here we are on the beach in Winter on a warm day!

Our WHY for moving South-

Hardly any snow and ice!

The heat does not bother us so much-

You can walk the beach in summer, and the surf and breezes are all we need!

We spent nine months here –

At first, searching for houses for sale.

But soon found out that anything we could afford also needed updating!

So – we found a community just North across the border into N.C.

We could build cheaper and get everything we wanted!

So, we signed and spent the rest of the nine months here enjoying NMB and the area!

Our new home shortly after we moved in.

Eight miles to the border of S.C.

Shopping – entertainment all around us.

38 miles from our close friends, the McBrides!

Three beaches, 10 to 20 minutes from us!

In the middle of about 30 golf courses.

A brand new community and loads of new friends.

In the years since-

Old friends from NVA have moved down here, and we meet every so often.

My H.S. buddy and wife-

is here now, nine miles away, for a one-year lease to see if they like the area year-round-

After the past six plus years of RV living up and down the coast and out West!

The younger grandkids and family love it here and visit often!

The oldest grandkids and parents also love coming here!

We now volunteer for the protection of Sea Turtles on OIB! PERMIT 25st02!

We choose to live here –

Aging during our SENIOR YEARS –

And for the past twenty-plus years –

Taking a supplement to help us age as HEALTHILY as we can.

Now, a drink that provides 30 fruits and vegetables to absorb directly into the bloodstream.

Nationally recognized in the health and nutrition industry –

It has been sold in the USA and 27 countries and has been in business for almost FORTY years!

Our HEALTH SUPPLEMENT OF CHOICE FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS!

We have not looked back from our move to the South.

Enjoying our retirement and Senior Years!
