Papa’s World – Life together and dreams!

Our life together has been created many times –

We all gathered at our home in the kitchen.

Family times – food and drink and grandkids!

Today – we are far away –

But they all come to visit, and we go back home several times during the year.

Our dream to live in a warm climate near beaches has come true.

Our dream now is to have them all once again gathered in the kitchen.

LIFE TOGETHER AND DREAMS!

We are very much against HATE!

That is not who we are or how we live.

Love – caring and helping is what we are all about!

We share LIFE TOGETHER AND DREAMS!

The home we have today is open to family and friends.

All have been here one time or another!

LIFE TOGETHER AND DREAMS!

Papa’s World – Memories from the past.

My late brother kept this article from the magazine in The Villages.

In his later years, before he passed away –

We would leave NVA and travel to Florida to his home in The Villages.

We would spend six to eight weeks with him as he was all alone.

He asked us numerous times to sell our home and move into his house with him.

We just could not do this at that time.

This picture was taken by a journalist who worked for the magazine while we were down there the previous winter.

He would show all his friends that his brother and sister-in-law made the “PRESS”! LOL

Many fond memories of the times we spent with him in his years after his wife passed away.

MEMORIES FROM THE PAST!

The two days we had continuous snow back in Brambleton, VA.

We lived just behind the Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C.

They recorded 48 inches in less than 48 hours!

Here is our enclosed patio, and the snow accumulated up past the windows!

We lived for 50 years in NWPA and WNY and never experienced anything like this.

We were supposed to leave for Florida to see my brother in a couple of days-

And we had to wait a week for the roads to be cleared.

And then it was only one lane in each direction!

It was pretty, but way too much!

MEMORIES FROM THE PAST!

Cindy – Sherry and Dottie – FRIENDS and best BUDS for decades and decades.

Along with Buck, Jim, and Papa.

All of them from back in NWPA and WNY, and always maintained these friendships over the years!

After retirement and into our senior years ( which we are now well into) –

We wanted to golf!

Not all the time –

But every couple of weeks.

We mostly golf with friends we have made or are long-time friends!

Now – today – living in Cameron Woods Community-

We are right in the middle of over 30 golf courses.

We mostly just play nine holes now –

Maybe dinner or just go home. MEMORIES FROM THE PAST and into the present.

On Sunset Beach – a mile and a half walk from the last entrance to the beach-

Sits a mailbox called THE KINDRED SPIRIT!

Placed here four or five decades ago-

By two hippies who carried everything down the beach to install!

Over the years, it has been replaced and modified into a memorial to those two peace-minded spirits!

A journal is left inside and a pen to write your thoughts, prayers, or whatever comes across you mind.

A peaceful place to sit and watch the waves come in or gaze out to sea or over your shoulder-

The marsh and Cherry Point are in the distance from North Myrtle Beach.

A place to gather your thoughts and think back to the two hippies who thought to place this here!

Many PAST MEMORIES are here in this place!

PAPA’S WORLD – LIFETIME OF MEMORIES!

Papa’s World – Life together.

We both believe this –

Volunteering and helping others.

We volunteer for the Protection of Sea Turtles – (yes, they are on the endangered species list).

We volunteer at our church,

Saint Lukes Lutherean Chrch –

For the Lord’s Food Pantry, the second Saturday of every month.

Numerous churches in our area run this food pantry.

THIS IS PART OF OUR LIFE TOGETHER.

We are now way past midlife and way into our senior years!

But – we have each other.

We are settled in our home –

We know the funeral plans.

We will stay here as long as we are capable.

THIS IS PART OF OUR LIFE TOGETHER!

We have explored the World –

We have moved so many times-

We have built three houses-

We are in a climate that we like for all seasons.

Travel abroad is most likely done for us.

Driving long distances is becoming harder.

We are happy with our lives now.

We still watch and communicate with family from afar.

THIS IS NOW OUR SENIOR LIFE TOGETHER!

Together for the last twenty-plus years –

We have taken this supplement.

Our health is a priority for us.

Papa’s World – Just looking around!

We have had snow twice in the almost six years we have been in S.C. and N.C. –

And this is a picture of the sunset for the first time!

It was not much – maybe three inches, but with the sun –

Quickly turned to ice and was gone in five days!

This is the back yard –

This year, we had a freak storm cyclone –

That is what they called it, and it came right up the coast from the South.

They even had snow in Northern Florida!

FIFTEEN INCHES is what we got in twenty-four hours.

And the wind was terrible –

Causing it to drift in places to three feet!

I thought we had left this all behind in NVA and WNY!

We did not even own a snow shovel!

I DO NOT LIKE SNOW AND ICE!

This is my idea of winter in the Carolinas!

Dress warm, and when the sun comes out –

Remove layers as it gets warmer, and it does do that!

I can live with that!

Walking on the beach as long as it is not windy-

The sand STINGS your face.

On a walk at the OIB community center in February-

About 50 degrees in the sun, but felt warmer.

So far, we love the weather of the Carolinas!

On the island of OIB-

Free Friday night music concerts from the end of May to the end of September.

Here, the seating area is starting to fill up.

You can take your own food and drinks-

The drinks can not be in a glass!

The music is good and lasts about two hours.

AND, IT IS FREE!

Friday night concerts at OIB!

Other towns nearby have their own free concerts on different nights!

A favorite place for us to go and grab a coffee or tea is Causeway 59 –

Situated just after you exit the causeway bridge to OIB!

There are three restaurants here and a marina.

We sit here and watch the boats come in to refill or to eat at the restaurants.

This is all just off the ICW, which has access to the ocean.

Just a quiet little place and good food!

For enhanced IMMUNE systems.

Papa’s World – Some laughs and good thoughts!

My GOOD THOUGHT for the day!

We volunteer for the Protection of Sea Turtles on Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

For thousands of years, they were able to come onto the beaches and lay their eggs.

But the human population in America exploded, and along with it came “GARBAGE”!

Today, our oceans are full of plastics- bags- and the plastic that holds soda bottles and cans together.

The turtles mistake the plastic bags for jellyfish!

They attempt to eat it, but it blocks their intestines.

They starve to death.

The other plastics go around their mouths and prevent them from eating.

These are but a few ways the human population has interfered with Sea Turtles-

To the point that they are on the endangered species lists.

There is much, much more to all of this.

But we try to help by volunteering!

ONE CUP is all I have each day.

First thing in the morning!

I look forward to that each day.

MY GOOD THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

LOL – A little humor first thing in the morning along with my coffee!

I love to do this-

To make someone feel special and smile!

With my long-time friends –

Cindy and Buck are on our trip to Northern California.

We have traveled the world with them.

Neighbors and friends in the mid 90s-

On Pleasant Acres Drive- Portville, N.Y.

Today, we live about 38 miles from them.

We still get together.

LIFE TO US IS ALL ABOUT FRIENDSHIPS!

It seems we all have that favorite chair- couch –

A storage place for clothes! LOL!!

PAPA’S WORLD – LOOKING OUT FOR SUMMER!!!!!

Papa’s World – Our life at the beach!

Humor – keeps us going!!!

Our life revolves around living near the three beaches in our area.

However, so do friends, family, and GOLFING!

Here is Cindy and Papa!

Cindy and Buck were our neighbors back in WNY in the 90s.

They moved to the Wilmington, N.C. area and then to this golf course called Magnolia Greens-

Just outside Leland and about ten minutes to Wilmington.

We live 38 miles away in Cameron Woods, Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

We often get together to play golf –

See entertainment or just visit each other’s home.

We have remained in contact all these years and have traveled the world together.

Here we are on a par three and standing where our balls ended up on the drive.

Three weeks before this –

Cindy had a hole-in-one here!

Over thirty years ago –

I had a hole-in-one at Saint Bonaventure golf course.

I had hit first and got it close, but she really put it tight to the hole!

Birdies for both of us!

BEACH LIFE – FRIENDS and GOLFING!

The entrance to OIB at the community center.

We often come here in the off-season-

We purchase a pier parking pass for the season-

Or if we come here in season –

You now have to pay to park.

There are bathrooms here –

And a volleyball court for sand volleyball!

From mid May to mid-October –

We spend almost every day on the beach –

As part of THE PROTECTION FOR SEA TURTLES!

This is our fourth season of being volunteers.

This has become a big part of our BEACH LIFE!

Marcus – TAYLOR and Tammy!

Taylor has applied and been accepted as an INTERN this summer for two weeks –

For the Protection of Sea Turtles –

She did this all on her own and will be spending two weeks with us in August.

One or both of us must be with her at all times.

This past year, she tried out as a Freshman –

And made the JV basketball team.

Then, in the Spring,

She tried out and made the JV soccer team.

Since she was just walking,

She had a love of horses!

Now today she rides and works at the horse barn.

She is very tall – almost as tall as Sherry.

She has a way with animals –

Training their Goldendoodle – Marley –

All kinds of tricks.

For two weeks, she will become part of our daily BEACH LIFE!

Friends are part of our BEACH LIFE!

Here is Bob (my grade school buddy)-

And Pam – his wife – Sherry and Diane, our neighbor who has a summer cottage in Rushford Lake back in WNY!

This is near where we raised our kids in the Olean-Portville area.

BEACH LIFE INCLUDES THEM!

Healthy living and building our IMMUNE SYSTEMS –

Has been part of our life for over twenty years.

Today, we age as healthily as we can in our senior years.

PAPA’S WORLD – BEACH LIFE!!!!!!

Papa’s World – Health is our goal.

Twenty plus years ago –

Sherry and I started on a journey to age as healthily as we could into and through our senior years.

This brought a new diet and an awareness of not eating certain foods and drinks!

For me – I GAVE UP MILK! ( I drank a lot of milk since I was a toddler)

Along with that – SODA’S!

I also drank a lot of them since I was a teenager.

Then I cut way back on dairy and meats.

Red meat, I seldom have –

Instead, I eat chicken, pork, and fish in moderate amounts.

I try not to eat deep-fried.

And I cut way down on sweets –

Milk chocolate is my downfall!

But other candy, cakes, and pies –

I seldom eat those.

Sherry is my source of information and keeps an eye on me.

I do not like hard liquor or wine.

I will drink a glass of beer every couple of weeks.

I drink mostly ice water.

I am not a prude, but a SENIOR!

And I recognize I am not up to all that as I used to be!

As a SENIOR, you have more aches and pains –

You require rest but also a form of exercise.

Mine is walking!

Recently, we took our daughter and two granddaughters to Saint Augustine.

In the four days there –

I walked 7000 plus steps a day.

I also know when to get off my feet if only for a couple of minutes.

Taking short rests helps me with a problem I have with my right leg.

Just knowing I will be okay and just keep going with short rests is all part of my senior years.

TRUE – but I KEEP TRYING!!!!!

Sherry – THE GOOD WITCH – and “JUST TOM”!

I used to dress up for Halloween –

But I am okay with going as “JUST TOM”!

Living life one day at a time –

Is good enough for me.

PAPA talking to two tourists after helping to make the runway path for –

THE PROTECTION OF SEA TURTLES on Ocean Isle Beach.

Here, I explain as best I can the “WHY” of being a volunteer for this organization.

We are now into our fourth season of volunteering.

This means from mid-May to mid-October-

Almost every day on the beach!

This gives us a purpose in our senior years and a goal to get out and walk every day.

Senior living one day at a time.

Plus as you get older –

Communicating with others is important-

Keeping your mind as sharp as you can.

Taking trips with old friends.

Meeting up with old friends!

Keeping a balanced lifestyle.

Always looking to reset yourselves.

For twenty-plus years –

Our supplement of choice –

Has been Juice Plus.

Thirty Fruits – Vegetables and Berries.

The nutrients of all of these are put into gummies and capsules.

Every day, getting the nutrients we need for a healthy senior lifestyle.

I have not missed a single day in over twenty years.

Papa’s World – Four seasons-life in the Carolinas.

Welcome to PAPA’S WORLD!

Moving to the South –

First in 1999 to NVA-

While it was a bit warmer-

We still had lots of ICE AND SNOW!

This was one of the major snowstorms we had while living in NVA!

Truth be –

We had more snow in storms there than in the entire 50 years we lived in WNY and NWPA!

We lived just behind the DULLES AIRPORT –

And they recorded 48 inches of snow in two days!

So – when the Pandemic hit –

The 401K dropped, and the housing market took off!

In 2020 – WE SOLD –

And moved temporarily to North Myrtle Beach!

We leased a condo for nine months until our new home was completed-

In Cameron Woods Community, N.C.

Just seven miles from the S.C. border in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

We are near two beaches, and twice in five years we have experienced snow for a day!

But – most of the time it is warm – bright sunshine- breezy –

And comfortable to walk, and if too hot-

Head for the beaches and breezes.

Here is OIB and the bridge to the beach –

The same can be said for Sunset Beach and Holden Beach.

We are close to all three.

We also walk the beaches in the Winter months as long as it is not windy.

The sand stings your face when the wind blows hard.

There are times in the Winter months – Spring and Fall –

That we golf with friends.

The four seasons here allow us, at times, to do just that!

I can say that we have found our forever home and area to live in.

At least it works for us.

Papa’s World – Our life near the beaches!

Sitting on our front porch!

One of the criteria I wanted –

Was a place to sit in the shade all day long.

So – we got it with this front porch!

This was in July 2021 when we moved in, and you can see the home directly across the street-

Was not completed yet!

We were one of the first to move into this section of the development.

Perhaps halfway through the total process, which took a couple more years to finish.

So, we pretty much watched the construction of more than half the development.

As of now, two lots remain –

Both on either side of the model and they are working on completing them.

Our community is just a couple of miles as the crow flies from the beaches of –

Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach!

LOL – maybe some truth in this!!!!

We are also thirty minutes from North Myrtle Beach, Holden Beach, and Oak Island Beach.

So, we are in the mix as to going to a different beach if we want!

It is here where we spend most of our time –

This is a view of the patio out back with a SOLO FIRE PIT!

I am not much into fire pits, but we do use them when family comes to stay.

We have now furnished this patio –

And replaced the screens on the lanai with EZEE BREEZE-

Water and pollen can not come in!

Sitting in the lanai during a rainstorm is comforting!

But – it also has a lot of sun back here, so I prefer the covered front porch and the glider!

We back up against a protected wildlife site with very tall trees.

Oak and pine.

This will not be cut down and is full of birds.

We have landscaped the yard –

Planting palm trees and crepe myrtles.

The edging is full of stones to prevent weeds.

This extends to all around the house.

This is now the view of the front porch – glider where I sit-

And the stones inside the edging!

It is here that I can sit in the shade and watch the folks go by, walking or driving.

The crepe myrtle and the stones –

Before the stones replaced the mulch completely around the house.

All the landscaping is complete.

Today, we drive ten minutes, park, we have a season pass, and walk on the beach.

We don’t go into the water to swim –

We are seniors and, beyond that,

Youthfully exercise.

But we do walk in the surf!

From the air –

OCEAN ISLE BEACH – the bottom is where we have a parking pass.

We are blessed in our senior years to live near here.

A dream we both had all our lives.

Here we are in the park before you cross over the causeway to SUNSET BEACH –

And along the ICW!

Summertime, we come here to sit under the huge live oak trees in the shade.

We people watch and also the boats going up and down the ICW!

We also go over the causeway bridge to Sunset Beach and walk the beach.

WE ARE LIVING OUR LIFE NEAR THE BEACHES!

Papa’s World – FORTY FOUR YEARS – time flys!

June 25th. 1982- on our wedding day.

Our life together started with two sets of children.

This was the second marriage for both of us.

Sherry had two young daughters –

Debby – the oldest – is 7 or 8 years old.

And Tammy is 4 years old.

My two boys were Troy – the oldest – 14 or 15 years old –

And the youngest – Shawn – is 9 or 10 years old.

The boys stayed with their mother while the girls stayed with Sherry.

We lived way up at the end of the East Windfall Road.

About ten miles to the school and just over the hill from Olean, N.Y.

But we were in the far corner of the Portville school district.

The driveway was 1/10th of a mile long.

Good for sled riding in the winter –

But the rest of the time, I had to mow it up and down both sides.

That first year was with a gas push mower, and then we bought a ride mower.

All told, over an acre of lawn to mow, up and down, and part on a side hill.

That first year- it would take me three days – rest one day –

And start over again.

Way up back – we had a fire pit.

There were only two neighbors –

One we could see across the valley and hill-

And one at the very end of the driveway.

There was another family up the hill out of sight-

They had a couple of children who were friends of the girls.

Other than that, country living.

Any events or church –

Was at least a ten-mile drive.

The girls became involved in sports, and I would pick up the boys every other weekend.

Which was a 18 mile drive one way.

Money was scarce-

So we planned day outings to parks – state parks –

Packing food –

Looking back, we did not seem to care that we had no money –

We made the best of everything!

We were busy with work, the kids, church, and the church youth group.

All four were in the youth group.

We took camping trips with the youth group.

A canoe trip down the Alleghany River –

The boys went, but the girls did not go.

Church became a big part of our lives.

Many activities for us as a family since the divorce-

We had each other, and to this day-

We still have church in our lives and each other.

We lived out in the country for about five years.

But – we yearned to get closer to the church and the school and to my sons.

We found a house in Pleasant Acres Drive just three miles from the school.

We were still in the Portville school district.

We were also about three miles from the church.

My oldest son had graduated from high school.

But we still did things as a family with my youngest son.

Here is where we met our decades-old friends –

The McBrides – Buck and Cindy!

Cindy, Buck, Sherry, and Papa.

We were neighbors until mid 90s, they moved to the Wilmington, N.C. area.

We stayed in touch –

We visited them in N.C. several times.

Then we started touring the country with them.

Eventually out of the country.

During these times and after –

We transferred to NVA!

The kids had all graduated and from college.

We were empty nesters.

Within two years –

Both girls had followed us to NVA.

The boys stayed in NWPA.

Debby had married, and they had Maddy –

Less than a year old.

They all stayed with us until they found their own homes.

We still visited Buck and Cindy and were still friends with Dottie and Jim

Both from Eldred and I had known them before Sherry.

To the left- Debbie, a friend of Jim and Dottie.

Then Cindy and Sherry- Buck and Papa.

Cindy and Buck knew Jim and Dottie before us.

But I grew up with Jim and Dottie in Eldred, Pa.

Jim and Dottie met Debbie after they moved to Va. Beach area.

Sherry – Jim and I all worked for American Olean Tile-Dal Tile.

We are all still to this day –

Get together at one anothers homes.

Jim and Dottie have since retired and moved to the northeastern coast of N.C.

FRIENDSHIPS that have lasted for decades.

I use it as a replacement for a meal.

Papa, Buck, Cindy, and Sherry on one of our many golfing adventures!

Back in the late 80s and into the mid 90s-

We were neighbors on Pleasant Acres Drive in Portville, N.Y.

They moved to the Wilmington, N.C., area and eventually to Magnolia Greens just outside Leland, N.C.

We have remained friends and in touch all these years!

In these years, we also moved to the NVA area and retired there.

The Pandemic came, and we sold our home and moved to Cameron Woods Community, about 35 miles from them.

In all these years, we traveled the World with them on vacations!

Here we are at a brewery just outside Asheville, N.C.

Sharing a laugh!

Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Canada, and all over the USA!

Laughing – golfing (OHAU) –

The Redwoods in California –

And exploring San Francisco,

Reno and walking the streets of Philadelphia.

So many memories!

On one of our golf scrambles!

We try to get together as often as we can to golf.

It is always a fun time!

The times we have spent together and all the laughs.

Friends for decades and decades!

TODAY IS A SPECIAL DAY FOR CINDY!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR FRIEND!

May the sun rise and set on this day –

Love,

Appreciation – laughter – toasting –

Another chapter in your life begins.

We are truly fond of all our good times –

I KNOW THERE IS ANOTHER HOLE IN ONE IN YOUR FUTURE –

I hope I am there to see it!

ALMOST for you, dear friend!

Until we golf again –

Until we see another show-

Until we sit down and have a toast-

Until another laugh and a hug-

LOL-W HAT LANDLINE???? LOL!!!!!

We have not had a landline in twenty years!

But- I do remember when I was younger –

WE HAD A PARTY LINE!

Growing up in WPA in the little town of Eldred, Pa.

The phone – if you picked it up-

You just might hear someone talking!

That was the “PARTY LINE”!

I still remember my parents’ home phone number and my sisters who lived right next door!

GENERATIONS – FAMILY and FRIENDS!

Papa- Sherry, Cindy, and Buck.

This is on one of our trips we took together.

We went to Asheville, N.C. –

And we visited the SIERRA NEVEDA BREWERY and TAPROOM!

Here we went on a tour of the Brewery –

Had a beer tasting and ended up in the restaurant on site for a drink and some food.

It was a first for us to see the process of brewing a national beer from the beginning to the end.

FRIENDS – very important for us.

The list of brews on tap at the brewery!

Sherry and Cindy are on a tour of the brewery.

I would go back someday just to see if any changes were made.

The next part of our GENERATIONS –

Is our Family!

The Myers –

Our daughter Debby –

Her husband Mike –

Sarah, Ella, Maddy, and her boyfriend, Kendrick.

Debby is the oldest daughter, and the three girls are the oldest grandchildren.

FAMILY is very important to us.

We spend time back and forth-

And they come to see us!

We often meet the youngest grandchildren halfway.

Here, we are dropping them off for their parents half way.

Cassidy, Bode, Sherry, Papa, and Taylor!

Taylor will come down for two weeks and be an intern-

For the Protection of Sea Turtles at OIB!

She remembered a presentation about the program two years ago.

Called Sherry and wanted an application!

All on her own!

She filled it out and also sent her grades as a Freshman in H.S. which was required.

Her lowest grade was a B+ – the rest were A+ or A.

The one condition is that we have to be with her 100% of the time when she is involved!

FAMILY IS IMPORTANT TO US!

Marcus – Bode and Tammy –

Our youngest daughter.

It will be strange during those two weeks not having the other two here with us.

Papa’s World – A day in the life of a SENIOR!

As we neared our early beginnings of “SENIOR” life –

We did the research and selected a supplement to check off all the requirements –

Of a Healthy Lifestyle.

That was over twenty years ago!

We needed to get more fruits, vegetables, and berries into our diets!

That to us was a hard thing to do –

Being a SENIOR, you just do not consume food as much as you used to!

Our lives changed in those early years.

We became more health-conscious.

Walking for me and running for Sherry!

Our research led us to a Supplement that crossed the “T’S” –

And “DOTTED” the “I’S”.

Juice Plus had all the research published in Journals on health.

Proving to do what was claimed.

It was easy to add to our busy lifestyles as SENIORS!

There were CAPSULES – 30 nutrients in a capsule that went immediately into the bloodstream.

There were GUMMIES – Fruit – Vegetable and Berries –

That you ate and did the same as the CAPSULES!

And then there were several drinks –

FRENCH VANILLA – DUTCH CHOCOLATE and the above SUPER POWER!

All tasted good and became for me –

A way to curb my appetite while getting the NUTRIENTS into my bloodstream.

We have continued this supplement for over twenty years.

Taking it with us wherever we travel in the world.

It has become a staple in our SENIOR YEARS of living.

Volunteering – The Protection of Sea Turtles –

From mid-May to early October each year.

We are now in our fourth season.

Our seniors’ lives are active –

And to have a source of Nutrients to take every day –

Has become a staple in our lives!

Today – I am 77 years old – Sherry will be 77 years old.

We choose the senior lifestyle of health and nutrition –

On the beach for our 75th birthdays in 2024.

Living in five states, including childhood.

Working for one Company for a combined 79 1/2 years.

Volunteering wherever we have lived.

Living our dream now near beaches, golf, and warm weather!

It has been a gift that we are blessed to have had this life.

The twin granddaughters –

When they were little –

Cassidy and Taylor.

In the early years, we had them all the time while the parents worked until school.

I would wish upon a star to reclaim some of these times –

To once more have them little in our life again.

Today, they have grown up –

Freshmen in H.S.

Taylor – Cassidy and their mother, Tammy.

The Swedish genes from Sherry –

Run in the family!

Adventures from the past!

Both were captains for their teams.

Papa’s World – For Generations- past and future!

In my blog today, I hope to share the past for the Generations who are to follow!

We blended two families back on 6-25-1982!

My family is almost all gone from the ones I grew up.

The family photos were all destroyed by someone outside the family!

That leaves me with capturing everything present and what I sometimes find from other folks regarding my own family!

So – these blogs are JOURNALS –

Full of pictures, stories, facts, and places and people.

THIS IS FOR GENERATIONS – THE PAST TO THE FUTURE!

Years ago, when they were still growing up-

Bode – Cassidy – Taylor – Sarah – Ella and Maddy –

All six grandchildren!

This was at the Museum in Winchester, Va.

This is an actual Native American Canoe.

Today, ELLA and MADDY have graduated from college.

Sarah is a freshman in college.

Cassidy and Taylor are freshmen in H.S.

And Bode is going into Middle School.

Today – all six together at Mike and Debby’s home for pictures.

This is at Lake Holiday, Va.

This generation will produce the generations to come in the future.

This blog will help those to come to understand who we were.

THIS IS FOR GENERATIONS – THE PAST TO THE FUTURE!

Where we live close by –

An aerial view of the town park of Ocean Isle Beach, and an outdoor concert!

Free to the public from mid-May to the beginning of October.

First class bands with the Carolina Beach Music on the East Coast.

The other towns around us have the same, only on different days!

One of the perks of living here on the borders of S.C and N.C.

Group picture of the two families and us celebrating our 75th. birthdays at the beach in 2024.

This was our dream when we moved to the coast of N.C and S.C to have family visit.

This picture is –

THIS GENERATION FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE GENERATIONS!

Sherry and my motto for life.

Caring – giving – volunteering and maintaining friendships.

This is our own generation.

In Winchester, VA.

She would later go on to play soccer at Randolph College –

Becoming captain in her Sophomore year, before an injury in the final two years.

She carried on – playing part-time because of the injury.

But the little girl here –

Was the little girl who could and did make an impact on her college team.

THIS GENERATION FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE GENERATIONS!

Sarah, Ella, and Maddy.

Papa’s World – Cold – Winter – PUZZLE TIME!

This past Winter, we had a major N.E. snow cyclone!

It started around 6:30 PM, and 15 inches later –

There it was!

This was RARE for this area –

Maybe once in 30 to 40 years!

But at least there was very little ice!

Since we do not own a snow shovel –

I used my leaf blower –

The snow was powder-like-

And after hours –

I cleared a path to the street for our car, which we backed into the garage.

And the sun came out, and the melt started right away.

We had strong winds during the storm, which came up the East Coast from the S.W.!

Parts of the grass were wind-swept bare –

And parts had two to three foot “DRIFTS” –

The driveway was part of those drifts!

Then my good friend “JIM” showed up with a snow shovel, and we cleaned the other half rather quickly.

Sherry concentrated on the end of the driveway, where melted snow turned to ice –

And clogged the drain to the street run off!

She freed that up as Jim, and I cleared the driveway.

By the end of the second day of sunshine-

The driveway and road were clear and free of snow and ice.

The hot sun – although maybe only 45 to 50 degrees outside –

The major difference is living here in the South.

Everything melts away within four to five days!

But – a side result of all this –

ARE PUZZLES!

I groan from the inside as Sherry finds them from the closets, cupboards, or thrift stores!

Here is the kicker-

I FIND MYSELF CONSTANTLY HOVERING AROUND THE TABLE, FINDING MATCHES!

It becomes addictive for me! LOL

Even finishing one up – breaking it apart-

Reboxing and dumping the new one out!

Finding the edges – and turning all those 300 pieces over.

And then, as habit is –

Sorting them out and separating them into colors and like pieces!

I AM OBSESIVE!

That is why I GROANED INSIDE when she put the first one out!

Some pieces are much like this! LOL-LOL-LOL!!!!

But – I must admit – it is good for the brain –

And something to do during the cold outside!

It is far from the snow we had back in NVA!

There, it took months to melt.

Less than a week later, the melt is complete.

Our plant sits on the inside window ledge-

Absorbing the sunshine from outdoors.

We are back to normal after a rare Northeastern snow blast cyclone that occurred mostly near the shoreline.

LOL – However – I think there is a lot of “TRUTH” in this – Esp. for me!

Golfing for me is I hit that “ONE” shot that brings me back again and again.

I feel I am successful if I can hit my drives!

The feeling of connecting and seeing the flight of the ball down the middle-

Leaves me feeling good and ready for the next shot!

Par five – dog leg left over the pond to the green

An exceptional hole for me –

I am here in two-

My next shot ended up just to the fringe of the green to the right!

A rolled up chip shot and I putted for a par!

This does not happen often for me –

Most likely would have been a bogey or worse.

BUT – it is this part of golfing that brings me back time after time!

A NEW DAY WITH PAST MEMORIES!

Back in Brambleton at our home-

Every Easter we had an Easter Egg hunt for the grandkids!

Here – Bode is less than a year old, and now he is 11.

Papa’s World – Life in the SLOW LANE!

LOL – Yes – those early years are long gone!

Today, it is for us “THE MIDDLE LANE” for traveling!

To say the least, we hate traveling the I95 North to South corridor.

But – since we live on the borders of N.C. and S.C. –

And as far East and the seaboard as we can get-

It is a must route unless you are willing to add maybe three hours to your trip!

I mostly stay in the middle lane for a couple of reasons.

Ingress and Egress in the far right lane –

Makes it dangerous for me when traffic comes barreling onto the highway.

Plus, it seems this is where all the large trucks are, and I can not see beyond them.

So I stay in the middle lane and set my cruise control to 3 to 4 miles over the speed limit.

Maintaining that speed so traffic can pass me on the right or left.

If I see a long line behind me, I will move over –

But it seems like when I do that – next thing I know, someone is attempting to gain access onto my lane and brake time is applied!

So for the most part, I stay in the middle.

Being well into my SENIOR YEARS –

Going “FAST” is not an option for me.

I am not comfortable going with the “FLOW” sometimes 10 to 15 MPH over the speed limit!

Being older, my reactions are not what they used to be.

People are aggressive at those speeds –

And I have seen too many near misses or accidents that have happened.

THUS – I AM PART OF LIFE IN THE SLOW LANE and comfortable being here.

SENIOR THOUGHT FOR THE DAY! LOL

We run errands –

Be it appointments –

Shopping – I love going to the OUTLET MALL-

There is a Starbucks there .

An area outside where artificial grass, chairs, and palm trees –

A place to sip and watch people and guard Sherry’s ICE TEA!

She comes back every so often –

Sometimes with a package –

Takes a sip of tea and off again to one of the stores.

Me – I still am sipping that coffee from STARBUCKS!

AGAIN – LIFE IN THE SLOW LANE FOR ME!

Papa’s World – Everyday life – Family and Friends!

Ocean Isle Beach Causeway Bridge!

We live on the mainland close to this bridge.

In ten minutes, we will cross the bridge.

Our lives changed when we moved South.

We left friends and family behind.

Some friends have since moved down near us.

Family has been to visit numerous times, and we have made the trip back to see them often.

Which, before we sold our house, we said we would do.

The trip back up I95 is not one I cherish.

So we try to stay off it as much as we can.

But this area –

Close to three beaches, stores, and entertainment –

Is suited for us.

In the five years we have lived near here-

We have experienced two snow and ice storms.

Very rare for this area.

We have experienced one hurricane – Category 1!

I have doubts if we will stay for 2 or 3!

Time will tell.

But the sun and blue skies –

The warm weather –

The golf is just across the road, and there are 30 other courses nearby.

Entertainment – shows and acts –

Is just thirty to sixty minutes away.

Sipping coffee and tea on the ICW –

Volunteering for The Protection of Sea Turtles each summer.

Live bands are in concerts all around us for the summer months.

Festivals in the other months of the year.

The three youngest grandkids love to come and spend time with PAPA and MORMOR!

The three oldest have been here also.

Their lives have changed.

Two have graduated from college, and the youngest is in her first year of college.

But the bonds remain there.

My two sons and their families have been to visit us.

It is a long 16-hour drive for them.

FAMILY IS IMPORTANT TO US!

We now have past friends living five to forty-five minutes away.

Others, a couple of hours.

We get together and continue those friendships.

FRIENDS ARE IMPORTANT TO US!

In retirement, we have no schedule.

An afternoon sitting in the shade of Sunset Beach Park –

Reading and watching the boats traveling up and down the ICW!

Our dreams have come true in our senior years.

An early morning coffee and tea at the OIB marina-

And 59 Causeway bar and grill.

Watching the boats come in or just relaxing!

This is our life now.

We have this little spot we go to for coffee and tea and sometimes food!

It is right across the OIB Causeway bridge!

The name is “59 CAUSEWAY GRILL” and sits right on the water of the boat marina!

Inside is a small bar area,

And we have noticed this to be a meeting place for the locals!

While here for breakfast one morning prior to a storm front moving in –

About 6 or 7 couples filtered in.

They seemed to all know each other and the bartender!

It was close to noon, and they all ordered drinks!

The conversations were lively and interesting.

The Causeway Bridge to Ocean Isle Beach.

59 Causeway Grill – the first turn to the left –

Turn left as soon as you enter the road and pass the Gas-Station Store – “SHEFFIELDS” –

Then right into the parking area, and you have arrived!

Beyond 59 Causeway Grill is “SHARKEYS BAR AND RESTAURANT” –

And then OBI FISH COMPANY bar and restaurant.

All three are good local places to eat and drink!

Sherry is inside the dining area next to the bar-

Talking with the bartender before the crowd came in.

He was seated on a bar chair, eating his lunch.

He was familiar with the areas we had lived in WNY and NVA!

Most of the folks down here are transplants from other areas, and we find a lot of people who know the area –

Where we are from.

The glider and sign on our front covered porch!

The sun is setting –

Our neighborhood is quiet-

Once again, we had ventured to the island –

Had breakfast-lunch at 59 Causeway Grill!

A memory in a picture in time!

Before we left for S.C – N.C. –

As a family, we spent our last day hiking the mountains along the Blue Ridge of Va.

Today, the twins are freshmen in H.S.-

And Bode is about to go into middle school.

THIS IS REMEMBERING FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS!

We made many trips here with Family and Friends!

Our days began on the Metro and the ride into the Capital.

All the grandkids loved it, and the tours we took showed them a beautiful city.

Papa’s World – Memories of past life!

Sherry’s mother, Barb, and her father, Bill!

They are both gone now, but many happy memories remain.

MEMORIES OF PAST LIFE!

My grandma and grandfather – Nora and David Aiken.

She was Pa. Dutch –

Following the lumber crews and cooking before she met my grandfather.

He was Irish-English –

During the depression –

He would help feed his neighbors from his farm.

He passed away before I was born,

But my middle name is David after him.

They had 11 children-

My mother was the second youngest.

The oldest boy fought in WWI –

And his name was Roy.

He was a dapper man and always came dressed in his three-piece suit with hat in hand.

My grandma lived with us when I was born and stayed with me as both my parents worked.

MEMORIES OF PAST LIFE!

Marcus and Tammy –

When they were first married, and before the twins and the grandson.

Today, the two girls are freshmen in high school.

And the grandson will be going into middle school.

MEMORIES OF PAST LIFE!

Friends from NVA who all live either in S.C. or N.C.

We still get together-

Friendships from the past to the present.

We have furnishings that he built for Sherry.

Papa’s World – Memories revisited!

This is our Cameron Woods Community Center under construction!

I think this was late 2020 or early 2021!

Today – it is in my opinion-

One of the nicest Community Centers in these developments!

Two pickleball courts.

A fully stocked workout room. Two large bathrooms – women’s and men’s.

A fully usable kitchen –

A large screened-in room with a half dozen teak tables and chairs.

A six person dinning room table and a countertop off the kitchen with two high-back chairs.

Two sitting areas with comfy chairs – couch and fireplace with tv over the mantle.

A small library in the sitting room.

Two entrances from the main building out to the pool, with a third from the screened-in room.

The pool area is completely fenced in –

Two outdoor showers – and a circular step down into the water with shallow water before setting down into the pool.

The deepest part is about five feet.

A large parking lot with numerous mailboxes and a large manicured lawn.

It is a big draw for resales of houses.

MEMORIES REVISTED!

Sherry is pointing at her golf ball with the green and flag behind her!

People are putting out on the green!

This was her drive!!!!!

Her ball hit the cart path and continued all along it before bouncing out to the fairway!

This is a par four, and it ended up over 300 yards!

Excitement at a once-in-a-lifetime experience of playing golf!

MEMORIES REVISITED!

Papa’s World – May 7th. 1949 – 77 years – ME!

I was born in Olean, N.Y., at Saint Francis Hospital.

I had a sister, 15 years old at the time, and a brother, 10 years old at the time.

My mother’s mother lived with us.

Grandma took care of me as both my parents worked.

My earliest memory is sitting on her lap on the front porch-

And seeing a neighborhood young boy across the street-

On his way walking to school!

I asked her when I could go to school, and she said in two years.

That would make me about four years old!

My younger brother was born about four years later.

Today I turn 77 years old –

And I think back to, “Where did the time go?”

Yet, I have no regrets as I feel blessed to have experienced all that my life offered.

The first 30 years I spent living in a small town in NWPA –

Near the border of WNY –

In what is called ELDRED, PA.

At 18 –

One week after I graduated from H.S.-

I started work at AMERICAN OLEAN TILE –

Across the border in Olean, N.Y.

And – 47 1/2 years later –

Retired from the same company, now called DAL-TILE!

After transferring in 1999 to NVA –

Working at six different locations –

I ended up in Dulles- Chantilly –

At the Slab yard – Sales Service Center warehouse.

I wore many hats during those 47 1/2 years.

I also met Sherry at the Olean Factory –

She was in Payroll, and I was in shipping.

That was around mid 1980 –

That we began to date after she went through a divorce-

And I did too!

We were married on June 25th. 1982!

That was almost 44 years ago!

My two sons still live back in that area –

And her two daughters live in NVA!

We now live in Ocean Isle Beach in N.C.-

Near the border of S.C.

We moved during the Pandemic –

Form here in NVA –

To North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

We eventually had a house built in Cameron Woods Community-

Ocean Isle Beach on the mainland in N.C.

The Pandemic changed our lives –

We sold our home after 14 1/2 years –

It went way up in value as the 401K dropped.

We said our goodbyes –

Loaded our car and left for the South.

Warmer weather –

And live out our senior years.

Our health was a big factor these past Twenty Years!

So we did the research – read the published studies and decided to take a supplement!

And now have for TWENTY YEARS!

Over the past TWENTY YEARS –

Building our IMMUNE SYSTEMS!

Or – order in a cart or just not!

We have been here twice and want to visit during the holiday season to see the decorations!

In 2020, during the Pandemic –

We spent the first nine months here in North Myrtle Beach until our new home was finished!

We really explored all of the area and into N.C.

This area was high on our list, but we just could not find anything that did not require a lot of money-

To update!

A lot of good memories from our time here!

June 25th, 1982 – our wedding day!

It seems like only yesterday –

All the years have gone by-

GOOD MEMORIES!

While we were in ASHVILLE,

We visited the SERRA NEVADA BREWERY!

We were on a tour and saw how the beer is made-

And then we did a tasting!

GOOD MEMORIES!

LOL – However – I like PBR!

In fact –

We have a local hangout on the beach –

Called – “PELICANS PERCH” –

Where can I get $2.00 PBR’S!

Last time there with my buddy – Bob-

We each had three PBR’s and a meatball sandwich,

And a bag of chips –

FOR A TOTAL OF JUST UNDER $17.00 each!

Papa’s World – Life in NC at Cameron woods!

At the entrance to Cameron Woods Community at Thanksgiving!

For the fourth year in a row-

The community gathered and walked to the entrance to do a “TURKEY TROT”!

They meet at the community center and walk together to the front, and then those who want-

Continue to walk the different side streets!

CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY –

The “WHY” we chose to build our home and live here.

A previous year of meeting to walk.

The group has gotten larger each year.

Our front porch in Cameron Woods Community!

This is the one thing I wanted –

A FRONT PORCH!

Covered from rain and shaded from the hot Carolina sun!

I sit here and say hello to those who walk by or wave to those riding by.

You can say it is my little place of heaven as a senior!

Our journey brought us here as seniors.

Today, we have no plans to sell and move on!

This is our final home.

WE ARE BLESSED to have been able to do this!

FRIENDS – FAMILY have all shared our home here.

That is why we designed it to do just that!

Health – well-being – senior living!

All factors into this.

Every year, we reset our healthy living!

We maintain a healthy lifestyle so we can stay in our home.

Life is short-

A healthy life prolongs that life.

For over TWENTY years, we have been building our IMMUNE systems to stay active and healthy!

We believe in this supplement –

It has been a factor in our health for all these years.

If you wish to read and fact-check –

It has been around for forty years!

PAPA’S WORLD – LIFE IN CAROLINA AT CAMERON WOODS!

Papa’s World – Sunshine – blue skies – beach life!

A view of Ocean Isle Beach from the “GROIN” area looking SW.

The area behind the “GROIN” pictured here –

It is eroding fast!

The dunes are almost gone, along with the trees and vegetation.

The surf comes in and pulls the sand out.

The “Groin” was put here to stop that from happening where the houses are.

A beach replenishing pumped acres of sand in from dredging operations.

First and second avenues had disappeared, and third avenue was in danger of vanishing!

At high tide,

The ocean water actually was almost under the white house-

But for huge sandbags –

Surrounding it!

Those bags remained there, and sand blew in over them.

Such is beach life –

We chose to stay on the mainland –

And commute to here when we want to!

SUNSHINE – BLUE SKIES and BEACH LIFE!

This is the OIB public park on the island.

Open-air concerts are held here from mid-May to the beginning of October.

After October, there are festivals held here!

It is one of the perks we knew of when we decided to build our home in –

CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY!

SUNSHINE – BLUE SKIES and BEACH LIFE!

Our home –

The driveway looking toward the sunrise in the East.

This part of the coastline faces almost due South-

Because of the curvature from Charleston to the Outer Banks.

The storms tend to come up the coast and veer out, but sometimes –

They hit.

We have had one Category One storm.

It was scary, and not sure if we will stay for the stronger ones.

We are back some two to three miles from the coastline.

It is the wind I worry about and the protected nature trees we have here.

We have protected wildlife areas here and large trees behind the house.

But – the wind seems to come sideways, and the trees move in that direction-

And not toward the house.

The beauty of all the trees is one reason we chose this community-

Instead of all the clear-cut ones.

And in the picture, you can see a little part of all the trees!

Having family stay was a major consideration when we built this house.

We have room for them.

FRIENDS are also important to us.

We have lifelong friends whom we see two or three times a year.

Papa’s World – Writing for family!

Sherry’s father – “Bill”!

A WWII vet –

And a master craftsman in building furniture!

He made three Hutches –

One for each daughter –

They come in two pieces –

The top has glass fronts and doors.

The bottoms have wooden doors and shelves.

The upper also has shelves where you can display your fine china, etc.

He was self-taught –

And would use a small piece of paper to roughly draw his creations –

And then from his mind –

Cut and plane the wood –

Making dove tails and smooth surfaces for staining.

He was also a union carpenter.

We have three of his pieces in our home.

I write this for all the great-grandchildren who did know him.

A journal of generational information for future generations to come.

Here is Sherry’s mother and father –

Barb and Bill.

Her mother’s mother was born in Sweden.

There are still relatives over there.

Barb was known to the grandkids as “GIGI”!

She married Bill when she was 17.

They had three daughters –

Sherry, the oldest, then Debbie, and finally Bonnie.

They all lived just outside Mount Jewett, PA.

On several acres of land, farm animals were growing up, including horses.

Mount Jewett was a Swedish community-

Built by Swedes in the mid-1800s.

Her father was Scotch-German.

Many fond memories of both her parents.

Bill was raised in Ludlow, PA.

And enlisted in the service for WWII.

A JOURNAL OF GENERATIONAL INFORMATION.

When friends gather on the beach.

We live near two beaches-

Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach.

This is a view from Sunset Beach looking North to OIB and the tall building!

We often meet folks and sit and talk near either pier.

We both wanted a warmer climate-

And as little snow-ice and freezing weather –

We still have four seasons here, but much milder.

Marcus and Tammy were early in their marriage.

They now have the twin girls –

Cassidy and Taylor –

And the only boy grandchild – Bode-

Papa’s World – Looking around – beach life!

My dream has come true-

The other day, we decided to go to the two beaches-

It was a dead winter –

But a comfy 55 degrees with lots of sunshine.

First, we drove for fifteen minutes –

Crossed over the causeway bridge-

And parked near the pier and entrance to Sunset Beach.

We walked on the wooden walkway to the sand and down to the water.

It was low tide!

Sherry kicked off her sandals, and her bare feet touched the sand.

GROUNDED, SHE SAID!

Me – I keep my sneakers and socks on –

The sand is too cold-

But others were walking barefoot!

The sand, surf, and blue skies with the warm sun –

Made our day trip worth it!

Then it was back to the parking lot and the car!

We decided to go back across the bridge, turn right, and stop at THE SUNSET BEACH PARK!

Here are the restrooms which I needed –

Sherry said she would meet me behind the pavilion.

You can view the ICW form here and watch the boats coming up and down the waterway-

Even in the wintertime!

It was time to journey to our other beach –

A fifteen-minute drive to Ocean Isle Beach!

It is here from mid-May to mid-October-

We volunteer for the Protection of Sea Turtles!

This May will be the start of our fourth summer!

We parked at the pier and walked out to the sand and to the water.

It is different here –

Sunset Beach is flatter, and the sand seems more like powdered sand!

The sand here is coarser and has more shells.

Yet, you can see Sunset Beach!

There is more beach erosion here with drop-offs!

Making it sometimes difficult to get to the flat areas and the surf.

But – on the plus side-

We are much closer here and only ten minutes to the sand!

Sherry decided to walk up to the Community Center –

And I would drive the car there and pick her up!

This beach is our favorite to go and watch the sunrise.

Here – we are by the groin to see the sun come up!

I parked the car and walked up the ramp and met her.

We sat down under the covered deck and just took in the sight-

Sun – Sand and Surf.

Our peaceful place and my dream after all these years.

The Kinzua Bridge( Via Duct) –

Just outside Mount Jewett, Pa.

Cindy – and Sherry.

Sherry was raised near here –

And this bridge is a historic landmark and now a State Park!

Built in the mid-1800s- Stretching across the KINZUA VALLEY –

The land of the Seneca Indian Nation-

It was built to transport coal from Pittsburgh to Erie!

It is almost one mile across and three hundred and ten feet high!

Trains traveled across, and this was considered one of the wonders of the world when built!

A couple of decades ago –

A TORNADO came through and took out half the bridge.

The remaining half has been preserved, and you can now walk out and view through thick glass all the way to the floor of the valley.

The rest of the bridge remains where it came down.

A center was built – like a museum-

And the whole area became a state Park!

Here, Cindy – who has been friends with Sherry since the 1980s-

Sits with Sherry –

Sherry’s father used to ride his snowmobile across the bridge.

A steam locomotive used to cross before it came down –

And while playing golf at the Kane Country Club golf course-

We would watch it come by a par three hole!

FRIENDS AND MEMORIES!

Bode – the only grandson from Sherry’s side of the family!

Before we sold the house in Brambleton, VA.

He would come to visit while his sisters were in school and his mother was at her consignment store!

Hours and hours he would spend playing games.

So quiet –

I would check on him every few minutes!

Here he was, maybe three years old.

Today he plays football, golf, basketball, and field hockey-

And more as he gets older.

He is now eleven years old and in fifth grade!

All boy – barefoot – short shirt sleeves and shorts-

Even when it is cold outside! LOL

FAMILY MEMORIES!

Our very longtime friends from Portville, NY.

Steve and Elaine-

We raised our families together-

Played volleyball together –

Golf together and spent many fun times with them before we moved to NVA in 1999!

Back in NVA, it was not possible to grow in the wintertime.

So – We set this one up with grow lights –

And ran it full time in the garage.

With the garage door down –

The temperature hovered between 40 to 50 degrees!

The grow lights –

Which ran on a timer at night-

Helped by radiating heat during the time they were on at night!

During the daytime the garage heated up inside until you opened the door.

We did this for years while we lived there!

Today, we have one tower Garden set up full-time in our back patio –

It is there year-round except when I take a day –

Tear it apart and clean it up!

Usually every six months!

We get twelve months a year growing here.

We put an aquarium heater in the water reservoir –

So in wintertime the water stays warm.

We have a metallic covering –

That has perforated holes –

To cover the entire Tower Garden –

Allowing sunlight –

While protecting from below-freezing temperatures!

This works as we have not lost any produce in four years of growing!

A MEMORY FROM THE PAST CONTINUES TODAY!

Trisha and Shawn – married – my youngest son!

And next to them is Troy –

My oldest son.

All three still live back in NWPA –

Where were they born and raised!

Today, they make the long trip down to our home-

Always looking for them to visit.

A PAST MEMORY LASTING INTO THE PRESENT!

This is Slavins’ furniture store just down the street from my home in Eldred, Pa.

I was allowed to roller skate on the sidewalk to here –

Then I had to turn around and go back to my house.

Today – this is part of the WWII museum!

Tour buses stop here-

So folks can walk through the museum.

The other wall has a WWII tank –

Bursting through the wall!

If you have a bucket list –

This is a must-see for such a little town in NWPA!

A LONG AGO MEMORY CONTINUES ON TO THIS DAY!

NO OBLIGATION!

LOL – This says a lot about folks today!

My youngest son – Shawn –

He is a world-ranked pool player.

Last year – the team he plays on –

Won two World Championships –

Competing against teams worldwide in Las Vegas!

A PAST MEMORY THAT CONTINUES TO ON TODAY!

A trip back to Lake Holiday just past Winchester, Va. –

A Christmas tradition of CHRISTMAS IN A BARN –

Bethel Lutheran Church-

Above – Debbby – Maddy – Ella Sherry and Sarah.

Grandmother, mother, and three granddaughters!

This is a special time of year –

And as Seniors –

We still can make the trip back North at Christmas time.

THIS IS LIFE for us!

This is how we now live our lives as Seniors.

Every day is a new page in the book of life for us.

We cherish our life together.

Now going on 44 years, and before that, for a year and a half.

We have become each other’s caregiver.

Taking turns driving –

Running errands together.

Still able to plan adventures with family and friends!

LIFE is what we make it to be!

LAUGH – it makes you feel good –

Even if the above does ring some truth! LOL

Home now in the South –

Near the borders of NC and SC!

Our senior years will be spent here-

Now going on five years!

It is warm most of the year here.

In our senior years –

It is hard for both of us to brave the harsh cold-

Snow and Ice and even just the chill of a moderate winter!

Being comfortable in our home-

But – knowing that everyone is welcome.

Our home is set up for guests.

Sand – Beach-

And Surf –

But minutes away.

Papa’s World – OIB – BEACH LIFE!

Growing up in NWPA and WNY-

Vacation time was almost always a week at the beach!

In the early years –

It was in New Jersey –

Simply – the closest and easiest to get to from WNY!

Then – it was the Outer Banks!

Always – I had that internal feeling-

Someday – I hope to have this as an everyday part of my life!

Today, we have that opportunity –

We have moved to Cameron Woods Community-

In normal traffic –

A ten to twelve-minute drive to the beach from the mainland.

Above – Sherry and I –

We volunteer for the Protection of Sea Turtles!

From mid-May to mid-October –

We are on the beach almost every day!

Our dream of living near the beach has come true!

Our happy place-

On the beach – chairs- and shade from the hot sun.

I have to be careful – sunscreen is a must for me.

I visit the dermatologist every four months.

My Irish heritage is susceptible to pre-cancerous skin cancer from the sun.

So – I enjoy the sun, sand, and surf –

But I am also aware of the hot sun!

We have walked to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox a half dozen times!

And we have walked with family and friends!

It is a quiet walk –

No houses – just sand, surf, and dunes!

The pier at OIB-

Oftentimes, we go here to sit in the shade and watch the surfers!

When there are strong storms out to sea –

The waves here are a surfer’s paradise.

In 2024, we celebrated our 75th birthdays –

On a family beach vacation on OIB!

In our move to NC-

We wanted it to be a day’s drive- 6 to 8 hours for the family to visit!

And they all have been here numerous times,

Even though busy life- jobs and school limits-

Their time here.

We, in turn, travel back-

So every few months we reconnect!

Today – our home –

This is more than likely –

The last time we moved!

We have either built – or bought –

SIX homes!

This is the sixth!

Our BEACH DREAM IS HERE!

In our case –

“DREAMS COME TRUE”!

Papa’s World – Seasons- beach life!

Living on the mainland of N.C. –

Near the S.C. border-

We have what I consider the four seasons – but warmer!

We spent the first 50 years of our lives-

In WNY and NWPA!

We were in what is called “THE SNOW BELT”!

65 miles South of Buffalo, N.Y.

And – honestly,

I have always dreamed of living near a warm sandy beach!

I was tired of the cold, ice, and snow!

I love the green pine trees –

And bushes that remain green during what is considered winter here.

Here – the day starts out cold –

If 35 degrees is cold –

And by noon, it is in the 50s!

I can live with that –

Not having to deal with snow, ice, and blowing cold winds!

50 to 60 degrees in late November!

The lawns are starting to turn a light amber brown –

But the oak trees are green –

The ferns are green.

Winter is almost here.

I can live with this!

A cold winter day –

Walking near the beach!

But – it is doable!

The beaches are empty.

The sound of the surf and birds-

Soft white clouds against the blue skies of N.C.

We are in the South!

This is winter for us!

Once the sun is up and well on its way to high noon-

It is warm enough to walk on the beach.

Yes – we have what I call four seasons!

This is our dream come true in our later senior years after retirement!

And to age as healthily as we could into these years-

Twenty years ago, we chose this supplement.

Soon – we hope – family will once again join us for Spring Break!

Friends are important to us.

Over the years –

These friendships have grown and flourished.

We are blessed to have many people we consider friends.

From back in our DAL-TILE DAYS –

The Barndts – April and Brian.

Sherry and I worked with Brian –

They have visited the area several times in the past few years, and we have gotten together!

We left in 1999, and in 2012, the plane closed, and they moved to Gettysburg –

To one of our factories!

Today, they remain friends –

Again, we are blessed!

We have a group of friends from WNY and NWPA –

In the late 1980s –

We moved to Pleasant Acres Drive in Portville, NY.

Here we lived next door to Mike and Carol, and across the street were Cindy and Buck!

Jim and Dottie were just across the border in Eldred, Pa.and I grew up with them.

We all have since moved – six of us in NC.

And two still in WNY!

DECADES OF FRIENDSHIPS!

We are blessed!

We all lived back in NVA-

And today, two are in SC and four of us are in NC.

We still get together –

Blessings for our group!

Sherry and I have established new friends through our volunteering work in the protection –

Here is a group of us on trash pick-up day on OIB!

Good morning from Papa’s World and the entrance to our COMMUNITY!

Pictured here – (Sherry – middle right) – is the Cameron Woods Community-

Annual TURKEY WALK for Thanksgiving!

This was the fourth walk – every year since we moved in!

While I could not walk this year-

It was a good turnout, as it has grown every year from six to what you see here.

Also note – no children – that is because there are only a few in the entire neighborhood!’

We are mostly retired or soon to be!

Sunset between the trees in our backyard!

We have beautiful early morning sunrises and sunsets here.

One of the two reasons we selected this location –

I wanted a front porch to sit on –

And ours is in the shade almost the whole day!

I can sit out there most of the day if I want to.

The other reason is that Sherry wanted an office, and we got one!

Sitting on the front porch – seeing the sunrise –

Sitting on the back patio – seeing the sunsets!

The front porch I wanted!

The glider where I sit!

Protected, as you can see from the wet sidewalk from the rain!

Early morning sunrise from the front porch!

The beach – The pier and surf, and sand!

We always dreamed of beach living!

While we are on the mainland –

Ten minutes without traffic and we can stand here!

This is the life we have chosen.

We are blessed!

This is OCEAN ISLE BEACH with the causeway bridge we cross every day if we want to.

We are living the dream.

Never did we think this would come to be!

Our lives has changed!

FAMILY AND FRIENDS are still important to us.

THE GOOD WITCH- SHERRY and JUST PAPA!

Papa’s World – Being a senior!

My dream since I was in my twenties!

I would kid to my wife –

“I WANT TO SELL HOT DOGS ON THE BEACH”!

We would take yearly vacations –

To a beach.

I found myself counting down the days as soon as we got there.

I formed an idea in my head-

“Someday” – I will be able to spend every day at the beach if I choose to.

I would be the one sitting on the sand and watching those folks –

Packing up after a week and leaving to go back home!

Our SENIOR years are now just like that.

We live maybe four or five miles from the beach.

No traffic and in ten minutes we are standing on the sand.

My dream has come true in my senior years!

We still travel back to NVA for the holidays.

And they all travel down to spend time with us.

Our plan for moving South-

Was to be within a six to eight-hour drive –

For us to go home-

Or family to come down to us.

As we advance in our senior years –

We might have to curtail the traveling!

But for now,

We are still able to do the trips back and forth.

Home is where our hearts are.

Blue skies- white clouds –

Sunshine- warm weather-

Hardly any snow or ice.

Yes- it can and is cold during periods of time.

But with a jacket, gloves, and scarf-

I can manage-

Taking them off as the day warms up!

Being a senior-

It seems that the cold affects me more and more each year!

My two sons –

Troy on the left and Shawn on the right-

Still live back in NWPA where they grew up!

Both have been down once or twice.

And both will come for more visits.

Love them always.

That is why our beach chairs sit high rather than low to the sand! LOL

Being a SENIOR –

And for the past TWENTY YEARS-

We have taken this supplement –

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Papa’s World – Writing blogs!

My blogs are about Family – Friends – Events and Past Memories!

This is NEBO LUTHERAN CHURCH in MOUNT JEWETT, PA.

The church sits on a hill called MOUNT NEBO!

Surrounded by a cemetery of the Swedish ancestors who built the –

An eight-sided church in the 1880s.

Mount Jewett is a settlement comprised of Swedish immigrants!

The church itself is modeled after a historic eight-sided church –

from their native Sweden.

The men and women of the town put their resources and time

Into constructing the EIGHT SIDED CHURCH!

Everything is left inside, and services are held there on special occasions.

Sherry attended confirmation classes here and lived just a couple of miles away!

The pews inside – some are separated by the columns –

That comes straight down in the middle of the pews.

So you either enter from the right or left side.

A traveling artist of the 1800s –

Painted a church biblical scene behind the altar.

It is still there to this day.

Almost all of Sherry’s past family is buried there.

This part of the blog is for family and future generations to come –

To know and understand the heritage of their ancestors!

WRITING BLOGS!

Sherry and I are volunteers for the Protection of Sea Turtles for Ocean Isle Beach.

Here we gather for a picture after volunteering for trash pickup along the streets of OIB!

Our volunteer work begins mid-May when the Sea Turtles begin coming ashore to lay their eggs!

There are many facets to the organization-

Sherry does NEST VERIFICATION –

She is scheduled for twenty-four hours a day-

Midnight to midnight.

During that twenty-four-hour period, she is on call –

And must be on the beach within fifteen minutes after a TURTLE CRAWL is reported –

Or a confirmed Sea Turtle Sighting!

The team meets at the beach entrance and then walks the beach –

To where the event has happened.

They then must dig and locate the eggs.

Once they have done this –

The leader of all the teams –

Verifies the eggs are there and if they can remain at the site or need to be moved-

To a safer location above the tide line.

If they move it –

It must be duplicated exactly as found, and measurements taken for width –

Depth from top to bottom.

A hole is dug to those measurements-

The eggs are then gently taken out –

And put into a bucket!

The eggs go back into the new hole-

Exactly how they were taken out.

This ensures that the hatchlings are not disturbed and the gender of the Sea Turtles remains –

Like they were laid.

The temperature inside the chamber determines the genders!

They then construct a unit that prevents predators from digging up the nest/
A barrier is then put around the area and signage attached –

Stating this is a protected nest,

And fines can be leveled by authorities.

Also, each nest I’d sponsored and –

Lamented signs are posted for the sponsors.

There are times that the team finishes one nest and proceeds to another!

Whatever happens in that twenty-four-hour period is that team’s responsibility!

THE GOOD WITCH AND ME- JUST TOM!

Papa’s World – Living – IN THE SOUTH!

The beach – the ocean – warmer climate- hardly any snow or ice-

Golfing in the winter months –

Walking in sunshine with a coat and scarf-

Getting too warm and taking them off!

Blue skies – white fluffy clouds-

Watching thunderstorms rolling in!

Shows – music – entertainment-

Friends nearby.

These are just a few of the many things I associate with living in the South!

We wanted to be within a day’s drive from family in NVA!

The deep south was too far.

Being close to beaches was a plus.

Shopping – doctors and medical facilities.

Cities we could travel to if we wanted.

We chose the border of N.C. and S.C.

It can be hot in mid-summer –

But that is offset by being comfortable in mid-winter.

Our decades-old friends are 35 minutes to 3.5 hours away.

We still manage to get together several times a year.

The closer ones are about once a month.

We have made many new friends –

And other close friends from NVA have moved nearby!

We have downsized to one level –

With enough room for family!

In a community that is both quiet and has protected wetlands.

You see here behind the house,

Trees that are protected!

We feel we made the right choice!

We are happy here.

Friends and family visit.

The weather is to our liking-

Neither one of us likes the cold.

Andrea and Troy – my oldest son!

They will visit once again in the future!

Sunsets – this is our life in the South!

Papa’s World – Sitting on the front porch!

One of my main reasons to sit on the front porch –

Is waving or saying “HELLO” to folks passing by!

Our home has that porch –

It was the one thing I wanted when we picked out the location!

It would be in shade most of the daylight hours!

And – if it rained – if the wind wasn’t blowing-

You could just sit there and enjoy the storm.

Our home in Cameron Woods Community-

Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

Here you can see the wet sidewalk, grass,

And decorative stones-

Which are all wet after a rain shower!

The glider with the two pillows is where I sit!

And you can see it is dry!

Hot days with a breeze-

The shade makes it bearable to sit!

In the evenings, you can observe the fantastic sunsets we have here!

The same for the sunrises-

YES- I am up before dawn every day!

The dawn of another day at our house!

Front-porch sitting, I have done all my life.

Sherry’s bucket list for the new house-

Was an “OFFICE” that we could close off-

With floor space to put down a –

Queen-size mattress for company (mostly family)!

With the extra bedrooms and queen-size pull-out couch –

A love seat that pulls out to a single-

Along with the office-

We can sleep –

ELEVEN PEOPLE!

The only regret we have is either another full bathroom-

Or a half bath!

Another beginning of a day from the front of the house!

We are just two miles from the beach as the crow flies!

Of course, the ICW is also between us and the ocean.

We also have an enclosed sunroom – Lanai –

In the rear, which houses many plants –

And is fully ready with a fan and a small heater –

To sit there for the four seasons!

Papa and Sherry are walking on the beach.

Neither one of us swims in the ocean anymore!

But we walk on the surf and sit in the shade on the beach!

First of six grandchildren-

Five girls and one boy!

Today, she is a college graduate with a degree in Environmental Science.

Working for a large national Environmental firm and living in Fredericksburg, VA.

One of the blessed memories of our life together!

At our home in Brambleton, VA.

The entrance to the enclosed patio.

Taylor, on the left, and Cassidy, the fraternal twins.

And behind them is Sarah –

The youngest of her own family and all are cousins.

They always dressed up and played together.

Today, Sarah is a freshman in college,

And the twins are freshmen in high school.

Another blessed memory in our lives together!

Sherry is an SSC with the Juice Plus Company.

For 20 years, we have chosen this supplement for our health and nutrition.

After reading all the published research –

We decided this is the one that we would take and age as healthily as we could-

Into our SENIOR years.

Here is one of the many conferences we have attended –

Over the years, across the country.

Another blessed memory of our lives together.

Ella and Bode –

When he was young –

He adored Ella!

Here she holds him after one of her H.S. soccer games.

He would spend the whole game cheering her on.

Today, he is in fifth grade, and she has graduated from College.

And is teaching PHYSED to grammar school students!

Another blessed memory in our lives together.

I CHOOSE WISELY!

On one of our many excursions into Washington, D.C.

Here, Sherry stands at the Lincoln Memorial-

With the Washington Monument in the background on the mall.

We often took family and visitors on tours-

Walking all over after riding the metro in.

We loved the city –

And all the history and the museums.

Another blessed memory in our lives together.

The day my youngest son, Shawn, and Trisha were married.

They both live back in NWPA, where they were raised.

But have been down twice for visits!

Another blessed memory in our lives together.

Papa’s World – Thoughts and Humor!

I have always thought this way.

It is up to me to make my life what it is.

I think back on the choices I have made,

And one choice —another way — would change my life completely!

But with everything said –

I am happy with my life!

As true today as it was all these years!

I count my blessings and live my life one day at a time!

My dream of moving to the borders of N.C. and S.C. –

Was to be able to golf!

We have achieved this dream.

Once every two or three weeks –

Satisfied my need!

Living here –

It can be year-round!

LOL – A sense of humor goes a long way!

YEP – I RELATE TO THAT!

Our granddaughter –

Cassidy –

Made varsity as a Freshman Cheerleader.

She is also in gymnastics!

Here she is at sunset on OIB by the church overlooking the marsh.

Such a gifted little girl!

When long-time friends meet up after golf!

Bob – Papa and Jim!

All from little Eldred, Pa.

GOOD THOUGHTS SAVED IN A PICTURE!

Taylor – first homecoming date as a Freshman.

She is so pretty!

Our choices for health and nutrition for twenty years!

Papa’s World – A journey through life!

The ending of a day with the sunset!

Here in Cameron Woods Community –

We get Sunrises and Sunsets from in front of our home.

The journey of the sun across the sky –

Tends to be like our journey of life here near the ocean and the borders of N.C and S.C.

Our life is living one day at a time!

Sherry, as to what I call “THE GOOD WITCH” of Lindley Lane!

Here she is dressed up for our community’s Halloween party at the Community Center.

Sherry and Papa –

I WENT AS “JUST TOM”! LOL

Many times in the past, I have dressed up. But this year, I just could not get into it!

OLD AGE – SENIOR MENTALITY –

But I was happy to be “JUST TOM”!

So many times I have heard “THINGS” that are better left unsaid!

Those “THINGS” are just not true when checked out –

Yet that does not seem to bother that person!

I ask “WHY” to myself?

I have no answer –

That is my “WHY” I do not watch news stations –

Or listen to the radio podcasts.

Life is too short to be all wrapped up

In beliefs that go contrary to my beliefs.

The TRUTH is out there – just take the time to find it!

A POSITIVE outlook on life for me!

Our happy place – our home and our front porch-

Where I sit and watch the neighbors go by and wave.

LIFE IS GOOD!

For twenty years, we have practiced this concept.

As SENIORS, we are aging and taking care of our own HEALTH and NUTRITION!

What we started twenty years ago and take daily!

Papa’s World – Together as ONE!

The day we were married –

June 25th. 1982 –

Began our life together as ONE!

This describes our life as ONE together!

I believe all marriages have their ups and downs.

But there is always conversation to work things out.

This picture was drawn by Cassidy when she was 11 years old.

It is framed and sits on a dresser in our bedroom.

A little girl’s gift of art –

And we proudly show this as it has special memories of small children –

A theme we both cherish in our life together as ONE!

We lived this era of life!

LOVE – PEACE and HAPPINESS-

Brings us together as ONE in our beliefs!

FAMILY – Andrea – Troy – Trisha and her daughter – Autum-

Brings us to our family ideals.

We love them all –

Shawn and Sherry –

Sitting – relaxing, and this brings me joy!

We are ONE with family!

Our beliefs –

Leave no family behind!

Mother and daughters –

Debby and Tammy-

Their bond runs deep –

FAMILY – always since the day we married!

The years have passed –

The commitment remains the same-

ONE is what we believe.

Papa’s World – Memories in pictures!

LOL – but when you are in your senior years, there is a lot of truth here!

When family comes to visit –

My two sons and their families!

Important to us because they live so far away!

MEMORY IN A PICTURE!

YES, I CAN AND HAVE MANY TIMES! LOL

Family in Lynchburg, Va.

For six years, the two oldest granddaughters played college soccer in this town.

One at the University of Lynchburg and one at Radolph College.

Many times over the years, we rented Airbnb’s to stay for senior nights and games.

This is a MEMORY IN A PICTURE!

MY GOOD THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

When our three oldest granddaughters came for a visit.

Maddy, in the center, graduated from college –

As did Ella, far right –

Sarah, on the left, is a freshman in college.

A brilliant sunset as they came running down the street laughing!

A MEMORY IN A PICTURE!

Making memories for twenty years for Sherry and me.

HEALTH and NUTRITION.

The life we lead and the memories we make!

Papa’s World – From the past to the present!

Papa and Sherry –

On the beach on OAHU!

We really would like to return to the Big Island!

This is a past memory!

Cindy and Sherry are on our trip to Northern California.

We toured Lake Tahoe-

San Francisco –

And the wine country.

With stops at the giant Redwoods and Reno!

A cherished past memory!

The house we had built and lived in for 14 1/2 years –

In Brambleton, Va.

COVID and the Pandemic hit –

The 401K took a huge loss-

But this house gained so much that we decided to cash in!

We sold almost everything inside –

Packed up what remained into storage.

Then, for four months stayed back and forth with the families.

End of September 2020 –

We moved to North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

We searched and could not find a house we liked or an area we wanted to live in.

By chance, we stumbled upon Cameron Woods Community in OIB – mainland.

We bought a lot and in nine months total – moved in!

Today we live here –

Our home is completed –

And our journey ended happily for us.

FROM THE PAST TO THE PRESENT!

The date: June 25th. 1982.

Our wedding day.

Combining two sets of children.

One family and a journey begins.

July 2024 – our 75th birthday celebrations-

From the past to the present-

Still together – still best friends.

And still for twenty years –

The health supplement we chose to take.

Papa’s World – Past Memories!

Sherry and Papa on the beach of the ICW in Vareen Gardens.

We discovered this place during our exploration of the area before moving into our new home.

Situated on the borders of N.C. and S.C. –

It is a wooded area and marsh with trails – wooden walkways –

A fishing pier, and you can view the boats traveling up and down the ICW.

We have taken family and friends to this peaceful place.

A LASTING PAST MEMORY!

LOL – some humor for today!

For nine months, we lived in Ocean Keyes-

North Myrtle Beach –

And every day, we would walk the one-half mile to this beach entrance.

The time we spent here was a LASTING MEMORY we shall always cherish.

My good thought for the day!

The very first Cameron Woods Thanksgiving Turkey Trot Walk.

Six of us here –

Now two have moved away and one has passed on!

A LASTING MEMORY!

A lot of truth to this!!!!

Spring is coming – keep the faith!

Taylor and Cassidy when they were little-

Helping Papa rake leaves and bag them up!

A LASTING MEMORY!

So true – when listening – LASTING MEMORIES RETURN!

A memory in the making for the last twenty years.

Our way to a healthy life.

North Main Street of where I grew up.

A group of houses just past the car on the road –

On the left.

That is where I grew up!

That sidewalk on the upper left is where I rollerskated as a youth.

The complex on the left –

The red building with the tank bursting through the wall-

The building behind it –

And the large white building next to that-

IS the WWII ELDRED PA. MUSEUM!

Buses and tourists stop here.
