Papa’s World – Always Thankful!!!

Every day I wake up is one more day for me!

When you have a life-changing event –

You count your blessings, and for me –

Learn how to live life one day at a time.

LOL – as a senior, you get used to this!

Also, the support of walls, doors, and handrails while dressing! LOL

As the years go by –

We are grateful that we can still depend on one another in our senior years together!

The smiles – the youth are remembered in this picture.

Our three oldest granddaughters!

Today, Ella has graduated from college and is teaching PhysEd to little children!

Maddy has graduated from college with an Environmental Science degree and is working for a huge Environmental firm.

And Sarah has finished her Freshman year of college!

Papa’s World – Humor, laughs, and good thoughts!

Our life has been a blessing!

This flag tells it all!

Born and living through the HIPPIE era and then as a baby boomer –

We have led an interesting life.

THIS IS MY OWN GOOD THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

Cassidy, Sherry, and Maddy –

On one of our visits back to NWPA before her mother passed away.

In a small town called Mount Jewett-

At a Swedish restaurant on Main Street.

We always went there for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

It was a tradition for our family!

Here – Maddy tries on a Viking Hat!

As little Cassidy looks on!

It was, I believe, called “KAFFE SOL”!

Serving homemade Swedish pastries and food.

Bring back so many memories –

ANOTHER GOOD THOUGHT FOR ME!

We cherish these memories –

And someday we hope to return to NWPA –

A GOOD THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

Our glider on the front porch.

We are fans of these two teams.

She is a little bit more leaning toward the Buffalo Bills-

And I am a little more toward the Washington Commanders.

We cheer for both even if they play one another.

FOR US, A GOOD THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

LOL-LOL- some laughs and humor for the day!

Our very longtime friends –

From back in the 90s in Portville, N.Y.

Buck and Cindy –

They moved to the Wilmington, N.C. area in the mid 90s, and we moved to NVA in 1999.

But we stayed in contact and visited one another-

And took many vacations together around the world.

Today, we live some 35 miles from them and still get together.

Papa’s World – Fun Times – friends!

Dottie and Sherry –

Friends since we were married

Dottie grew up in the same town of Eldred, Pa.

As I did!

She married my long-time friend Jim before Sherry, and I was married on 6-25-1982!

So they have known each other for decades, and the friendship today goes back to then!

We raised our children together and went on vacations together.

FUN TIMES – FRIENDS!

Debbie – Sherry – Cindy and Dottie.

FRIENDS!

We have gotten together over the years at each other’s houses.

Played golf –

Sang songs –

Played games and drank a little!

FRIENDSHIPS!

Sherry – Cindy and Dottie!

The laughter is contagious and has been this way for four decades!

Life with friends!

FUN TIMES – FRIENDS!

Before we sold our house and moved from NVA-

Ginger – Nancy – Sherry and Claudia –

Along with three or four other friends –

Formed a group called “THE HENS”!

They would meet for a movie,

And then lunch or dinner.

They have all moved to different areas, and one still lives in NVA!

They have a standing Monday call,

And they get on when they can.

These four moved to N.C. and S.C.

And are within a 1 1/2 hour drive to meet up for lunch!

STILL FRIENDS!

Jim is married to Dottie –

We grew up in Eldred, Pa.

We worked together for American Olean Tile-Dal Tile.

Today we still get together –

Still golf and still laugh!

LOL – But the good thing for me –

I LOVE VEGETABLES –

I am always eating uncooked carrots, radishes, onions, and tomatoes.

I love celery and hummus dip!

I eat greens and raw cabbage.

I also like them cooked.

Steamed and just picked and fresh!

You do not have to encourage me to eat my vegetables! LOL.

I live one day at a time ever since my open-heart surgery.

I learned that day to never take life for granted.

It was as close to dying as I have ever been.

I count my blessings and the lifestyle changes we made twenty-plus years ago!

We build our IMMUNE SYSTEMS every day.

In twenty years, I have not missed a day, even when I had my heart attack and open heart surgery.

I am convinced – if I had not made those changes before the heart attack-

I would not have survived.

I now get tested every three to six months with blood tests.

Today – in those tests –

I am the same as I was the day after my open-heart surgery.

Everything is working, including every nuclear stress test I have taken.

Mine would be – “TOM HIT THIS BALL TOO SORT AND TO THE RIGHT- NOW IT IS YOURS!” LOL

In recent years, I have managed to keep it in the fairway –

Not as far as I used to, but at least I can find it!

Golf is a game of hard knocks!

Long – short – sideways and missed swings!

But – for me – it only takes one to bring me back time and time again.

THAT IS MY GOOD THOUGHT IN MY LIFE!

We both live by this in this world of turmoil.

Helping when we can and what we can afford.

Volunteering for those less fortunate.

LIFE ONE DAY AT A TIME!

YEP – I HAVE DONE THAT! LOL!

So many funny things happen while playing golf.

Being out in the open air-

Good companions –

Fun times and laughter.

I have even hit the ball, and my watch signals that I have fallen and do I need assistance! LOL

LIFE IS FULL OF HUMOR!

MY GOOD THOUGHT EVERY DAY IS THIS SIGN ON THE FRONT PORCH!

Beach day is only ten minutes away.

The other beach is fifteen minutes away, and the third is thirty minutes away.

Each offers something different.

It is a dream we have had for a very long time.

Papa’s World – Our life at the beach!

Humor – keeps us going!!!

Our life revolves around living near the three beaches in our area.

However, so do friends, family, and GOLFING!

Here is Cindy and Papa!

Cindy and Buck were our neighbors back in WNY in the 90s.

They moved to the Wilmington, N.C. area and then to this golf course called Magnolia Greens-

Just outside Leland and about ten minutes to Wilmington.

We live 38 miles away in Cameron Woods, Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

We often get together to play golf –

See entertainment or just visit each other’s home.

We have remained in contact all these years and have traveled the world together.

Here we are on a par three and standing where our balls ended up on the drive.

Three weeks before this –

Cindy had a hole-in-one here!

Over thirty years ago –

I had a hole-in-one at Saint Bonaventure golf course.

I had hit first and got it close, but she really put it tight to the hole!

Birdies for both of us!

BEACH LIFE – FRIENDS and GOLFING!

The entrance to OIB at the community center.

We often come here in the off-season-

We purchase a pier parking pass for the season-

Or if we come here in season –

You now have to pay to park.

There are bathrooms here –

And a volleyball court for sand volleyball!

From mid May to mid-October –

We spend almost every day on the beach –

As part of THE PROTECTION FOR SEA TURTLES!

This is our fourth season of being volunteers.

This has become a big part of our BEACH LIFE!

Marcus – TAYLOR and Tammy!

Taylor has applied and been accepted as an INTERN this summer for two weeks –

For the Protection of Sea Turtles –

She did this all on her own and will be spending two weeks with us in August.

One or both of us must be with her at all times.

This past year, she tried out as a Freshman –

And made the JV basketball team.

Then, in the Spring,

She tried out and made the JV soccer team.

Since she was just walking,

She had a love of horses!

Now today she rides and works at the horse barn.

She is very tall – almost as tall as Sherry.

She has a way with animals –

Training their Goldendoodle – Marley –

All kinds of tricks.

For two weeks, she will become part of our daily BEACH LIFE!

Friends are part of our BEACH LIFE!

Here is Bob (my grade school buddy)-

And Pam – his wife – Sherry and Diane, our neighbor who has a summer cottage in Rushford Lake back in WNY!

This is near where we raised our kids in the Olean-Portville area.

BEACH LIFE INCLUDES THEM!

Healthy living and building our IMMUNE SYSTEMS –

Has been part of our life for over twenty years.

Today, we age as healthily as we can in our senior years.

PAPA’S WORLD – BEACH LIFE!!!!!!

Papa’s World – Health is our goal.

Twenty plus years ago –

Sherry and I started on a journey to age as healthily as we could into and through our senior years.

This brought a new diet and an awareness of not eating certain foods and drinks!

For me – I GAVE UP MILK! ( I drank a lot of milk since I was a toddler)

Along with that – SODA’S!

I also drank a lot of them since I was a teenager.

Then I cut way back on dairy and meats.

Red meat, I seldom have –

Instead, I eat chicken, pork, and fish in moderate amounts.

I try not to eat deep-fried.

And I cut way down on sweets –

Milk chocolate is my downfall!

But other candy, cakes, and pies –

I seldom eat those.

Sherry is my source of information and keeps an eye on me.

I do not like hard liquor or wine.

I will drink a glass of beer every couple of weeks.

I drink mostly ice water.

I am not a prude, but a SENIOR!

And I recognize I am not up to all that as I used to be!

As a SENIOR, you have more aches and pains –

You require rest but also a form of exercise.

Mine is walking!

Recently, we took our daughter and two granddaughters to Saint Augustine.

In the four days there –

I walked 7000 plus steps a day.

I also know when to get off my feet if only for a couple of minutes.

Taking short rests helps me with a problem I have with my right leg.

Just knowing I will be okay and just keep going with short rests is all part of my senior years.

TRUE – but I KEEP TRYING!!!!!

Sherry – THE GOOD WITCH – and “JUST TOM”!

I used to dress up for Halloween –

But I am okay with going as “JUST TOM”!

Living life one day at a time –

Is good enough for me.

PAPA talking to two tourists after helping to make the runway path for –

THE PROTECTION OF SEA TURTLES on Ocean Isle Beach.

Here, I explain as best I can the “WHY” of being a volunteer for this organization.

We are now into our fourth season of volunteering.

This means from mid-May to mid-October-

Almost every day on the beach!

This gives us a purpose in our senior years and a goal to get out and walk every day.

Senior living one day at a time.

Plus as you get older –

Communicating with others is important-

Keeping your mind as sharp as you can.

Taking trips with old friends.

Meeting up with old friends!

Keeping a balanced lifestyle.

Always looking to reset yourselves.

For twenty-plus years –

Our supplement of choice –

Has been Juice Plus.

Thirty Fruits – Vegetables and Berries.

The nutrients of all of these are put into gummies and capsules.

Every day, getting the nutrients we need for a healthy senior lifestyle.

I have not missed a single day in over twenty years.

Papa’s World – Spending time together.

Our senior years are spent doing as many things together as we can.

Volunteering – here we are with some other folks from the Protection of Sea Turtles.

This day, a group of us volunteered for trash pickup along the streets of Ocean Isle Beach.

We spent about three hours on our assigned streets-

Then we, along with a hundred other volunteers-

Met back at the park, where they provided lunch and drinks for us.

We sat here on the stage and ate and talked.

From mid May to mid-October –

We are on the beach in some manner for the Protection of Sea Turrles.

This will be our fourth season of volunteering.

We also volunteer for our church for the Brunswick County Food Pantry.

This involves the second Saturday of every month –

Where our church operates the county food pantry.

We are there between 8am and 8:30 am.

We have 20 to 30 volunteers –

And I am usually assigned to direct parking.

Sherry works inside at produce, meat, eggs, or as a shopper who fills the cart with the supplies each family gets.

As a shopper, she wheels the cart outside to be loaded into the designated car.

Loaders perform this duty, and then she returns inside for her next order.

On the other assignments –

She works at an item storage spot and fills the order as the shopper wheels the cart by.

Outside- a volunteer directs the car to me-

I greet them and ask a few questions, and then instruct them to a spot and “BACK” in.

Many people have trouble backing into a spot –

And I help them.

I give them a number that they show on their dashboard-

And if they are unable to walk over to the sign-in station-

I give them a colored sticker that is placed on the windshield.

We have roving volunteers who will then come to the car and get them signed in.

I tell them when to go and sign in, and that someone will tell them when to go and pick up.

They remain in their cars and are loaded by volunteers.

We handle about 100 to 130 cars during the three hours we are there.

Most are seniors, and many can not walk far.

Many are families, and the total number of people runs between 250 and 275.

This is a service much needed in our county.

Other churches do the remaining Saturdays of the month-

And we are starting on Friday – 6pm to 8pm.

There are so many families.

For over twenty years, together we have made this our supplement of choice.

Aging as healthily as we can together into our senior years.

If this interests you, at no obligation-

Together we walk the beach.

There are certain things that I do not do-

She has card-making, group chats, and women’s games.

But we golf together and with others.

We shop, and I drive.

We explore together –

We watch TV together.

We visit family and friends together.

Since this day – 6-25-1982 –

Our wedding day –

We have been together.

Papa’s World – My first work day!

6-5-1967 – The day I drove to the American Olean Tile Company in Olean, New York.

I had to be there at 8:00 AM.

I was instructed to park in the large parking lot-

And go to the front entrance off the main street, across from ROXY’S BAR AND GRILL!

Go down the steps, and there was a small office with a partially opened window!

There would be a woman whose name was Shirley-

And tell her I was there to start work and meet with HR –

Whose name was Jim.

There were three or four chairs against a wall –

Directly across from that window, and she told me to take a seat!

Soon, two other college students came in –

They were there to work the summer and were students at Saint Bonaventure University.

Soon – one by one – we were called into the HR office and interviewed.

Those two were there for Summer jobs –

I was there to work full-time as I had a wife and baby son to support.

I was one week out of H.S.!

I had been in a terrible accident in September of 1966.

I spent 51 days in the hospital-

Not knowing if I would ever walk again.

This day, I was healed – reclassified for the draft with a family.

This was the first day of what would become a 47 1/2 year journey –

Working all those years for the same company in two different states.

Little did I know it would turn into a lifetime job.

This was the era of long-haired hippies.

But at that time, it was not me.

A supervisor by the name of Jim came to the HR office.

We would be working for him in what was called THE SERVICE GANG-DEPARTMENT!

He led us down another set of steps –

Turned left and went through a set of swinging doors.

HEAT – we felt it right away as it rushed at our faces.

We came to a large ramp and turned right!

He explained this was KILN NUMBER ONE!

It was well over one hundred degrees.

It was long – maybe 200 feet straight to the LAB.

People actually were working –

Sweat bands on their heads –

A contraption that shook sand and tile out of saggers into wooden trays.

The men had to place the saggers on the machine, and one had to take off the wooden trays and stack the tile on a skid.

They were fast – their t-shirts soaked with sweat and a woman –

Was there to grade the tile.

Fork trucks zoomed in and out –

Noise was deafening –

We were given earplugs and safety glasses.

The men had access to salt pills because they sweated so much.

It was one crew on this kiln. The other two kilns had their own crews.

It was also the hardest and highest-paid jobs in the entire planet.

They worked all week and by Friday, from eleven to noon –

Had their quota for the week and were done early!

Across the street to ROXY’S BAR AND GRILL, THEY WOULD GO!

They made at least three times what I would make and maybe even four times.

But it was hard, and we would be trained to fill in for illness or vacations.

I never had to go out there.

Instead, I was trained in the Pressroom to be a SAGGER BOY!

We continued past the Kiln and the lab –

Through a large open doorway with sliding metal safety doors in case of fire.

All inside entrances in the entire factory –

The first and second levels had these huge sliding fire doors.

As soon as we passed the fire doors –

Was the locker room for the men.

In here, we were assigned a numbered locker –

Mine was number 10!

There were no women who worked in-

SERVICE DEPARTMENT-BODY PREP –

At that time-

But if they had – their locker rooms would have been Kiln- Mounting room or Pressroom.

There was a shower room –

And a separate restroom with urinals and stalls for bathroom use.

A large round sink with a step on the pedal for water to wash hands.

A half-dozen men could stand around it!

I was about to start an unexpected journey that lasted 47 1/2 years.

Working for the same company in dozens of jobs.

A journey that I can honestly say –

I enjoyed – met hundreds of fine folks and even transferred to NVA to work at a half dozen locations.

When we came out of the Men’s Room, we turned right and down a slight ramp-

This was where Jim had a stand-up desk, and Herb, the other supervisor, had his desk.

This was BODY PREP, where the time clock was on the outside boiler room wall.

It was loud here with all the machinery –

But a lot cooler than the Kiln and Mounting room.

It was here that, after a few weeks –

There was an opening on the second shift-

Since the other two were college students and I was the youngest in the plant-

No one bid on that job, and I was assigned to the second shift!

It was TEN-HOUR SHIFTS!

I would earn two hours overtime each day, plus shift premium.

I had walked into a job where I could support my wife and baby.

We moved out of my parents’ home to an apartment over the Western Auto (now a library).

I worked that second shift for 6 1/2 years.

I made good money with the overtime.

The opening came on days, a

As I bid in the same department.

Here I am – my senior year – Number 65 –

Shortly before my car accident and about nine months before I started work at A.O.T.C.

That first day was the beginning of a career, and I have never looked back –

And never thought I missed other opportunities.

It was here in 1980-81 that I met Sherry.

We were both divorced –

We were married on June 25th. 1982.

PAPA’S WORLD – MY FIRST WORK DAY – 6-5-1967!

Papa’s World – Me – Healthy? My doctor says so!

Good morning and welcome to my blogs!

SUBSCRIBE. THEY ARE FREE!

For the past year, I have been limited in just how far I can walk!

I have this pain in my lower right leg calf after walking 1/8 mile.

All the tests – scans – ultrasounds –

Blood tests –

The whole ten yards!

I have a partial blockage in that leg!

In two places – the first being on the inside of the knee-

And then again in the groin area!

BUT – not enough to have an invasive procedure!

At the consultation –

I expressed my concerns about walking.

When I tried walking a 1/4 mile!

I was limping badly with pain in the calf of my right leg.

And I was starting to favor my left leg, causing soreness in my hip joint!

My concern is –

I did not want the pain to progress to being constant because I was walking!

“NOT SO,” he explained.

You want to walk like you did before.

The calcified artery will not break loose –

And is less than 50% –

If you walk,

There is a chance the blood flow will establish another way.

If not –

Then it might continue over time to become more blocked –

(DIET CAN DO WONDERS)!

But just rest for a few minutes –

Until it stops hurting( I am going to carry a beach chair over my shoulder)!

Then proceed to walk –

As much and as far as I can!

All my other tests have come back excellent.

He said I am the healthiest patient he has seen.

This has become very good news, and I can let the stress go!

My heart – neck arteries – borderline diabetic – my blood pressure-

Weight loss, mental well-being are all good.

Now I am not worried that walking will make it worse.

Just stop and rest,

And then continue.

I am going to continue my twenty-plus-year path to better health and Immune system with Juice Plus –

We often come here and park across the street.

The community center has restrooms –

And an easy walk to the pier or East to the groin area.

The “GROIN” is a 900-foot granite boulder wall –

Installed a couple of years ago to help protect the beach and erosion that has claimed parts of streets one and two.

This beach is where Sherry and I volunteer for the Protection of Sea Turtles.

We are now in our fourth season.

Today – Taylor rides almost every week.

She works at two barns –

Cleaning stalls and grooming horses!

She is as tall as Sherry –

And her lowest grade was a B+, and the rest –

A or A+!

A remarkable young lady who also plays violin and has taught herself to play guitar!

Papa’s World – FORTY FOUR YEARS – time flys!

June 25th. 1982- on our wedding day.

Our life together started with two sets of children.

This was the second marriage for both of us.

Sherry had two young daughters –

Debby – the oldest – is 7 or 8 years old.

And Tammy is 4 years old.

My two boys were Troy – the oldest – 14 or 15 years old –

And the youngest – Shawn – is 9 or 10 years old.

The boys stayed with their mother while the girls stayed with Sherry.

We lived way up at the end of the East Windfall Road.

About ten miles to the school and just over the hill from Olean, N.Y.

But we were in the far corner of the Portville school district.

The driveway was 1/10th of a mile long.

Good for sled riding in the winter –

But the rest of the time, I had to mow it up and down both sides.

That first year was with a gas push mower, and then we bought a ride mower.

All told, over an acre of lawn to mow, up and down, and part on a side hill.

That first year- it would take me three days – rest one day –

And start over again.

Way up back – we had a fire pit.

There were only two neighbors –

One we could see across the valley and hill-

And one at the very end of the driveway.

There was another family up the hill out of sight-

They had a couple of children who were friends of the girls.

Other than that, country living.

Any events or church –

Was at least a ten-mile drive.

The girls became involved in sports, and I would pick up the boys every other weekend.

Which was a 18 mile drive one way.

Money was scarce-

So we planned day outings to parks – state parks –

Packing food –

Looking back, we did not seem to care that we had no money –

We made the best of everything!

We were busy with work, the kids, church, and the church youth group.

All four were in the youth group.

We took camping trips with the youth group.

A canoe trip down the Alleghany River –

The boys went, but the girls did not go.

Church became a big part of our lives.

Many activities for us as a family since the divorce-

We had each other, and to this day-

We still have church in our lives and each other.

We lived out in the country for about five years.

But – we yearned to get closer to the church and the school and to my sons.

We found a house in Pleasant Acres Drive just three miles from the school.

We were still in the Portville school district.

We were also about three miles from the church.

My oldest son had graduated from high school.

But we still did things as a family with my youngest son.

Here is where we met our decades-old friends –

The McBrides – Buck and Cindy!

Cindy, Buck, Sherry, and Papa.

We were neighbors until mid 90s, they moved to the Wilmington, N.C. area.

We stayed in touch –

We visited them in N.C. several times.

Then we started touring the country with them.

Eventually out of the country.

During these times and after –

We transferred to NVA!

The kids had all graduated and from college.

We were empty nesters.

Within two years –

Both girls had followed us to NVA.

The boys stayed in NWPA.

Debby had married, and they had Maddy –

Less than a year old.

They all stayed with us until they found their own homes.

We still visited Buck and Cindy and were still friends with Dottie and Jim

Both from Eldred and I had known them before Sherry.

To the left- Debbie, a friend of Jim and Dottie.

Then Cindy and Sherry- Buck and Papa.

Cindy and Buck knew Jim and Dottie before us.

But I grew up with Jim and Dottie in Eldred, Pa.

Jim and Dottie met Debbie after they moved to Va. Beach area.

Sherry – Jim and I all worked for American Olean Tile-Dal Tile.

We are all still to this day –

Get together at one anothers homes.

Jim and Dottie have since retired and moved to the northeastern coast of N.C.

FRIENDSHIPS that have lasted for decades.

Papa’s World – Life together – senior living!

Our life officially started together on 6-25-1982!

We were young – early 30’s and both single but divorced!

Those early years were times that we shall always cherish.

Nothing “WILD” but living life and enjoying it!

The early years –

Hardly any money –

Working to survive –

But – wonderful in the sense we had each other.

Raising two sets of children –

Her two daughters and my two boys.

Taking long weekend trips and packing lunches – dinners to save on money.

Doing things that had no cost and were free!

Then the sports began, and with that –

Trips back and forth.

All four had sports and whatever came with it!

It seemed an endless life of travel!

But- the memories of all that are priceless –

I would not change a thing and wish we could do it again!

Along our path of marriage –

We have made lifelong friends –

DECADES!

Dottie – from the same town as me.

Decades of friendships!

Cindy – our neighbor back in WNY!

Decades later – still friends!

Bob and Pam –

My grade school friend and his wife.

We are still in contact and get together.

Diane and Sherry.

Our new neighbor in Cameron Woods Community is now a friend.

She has a cottage back in WNY where we lived nearby!

Here are Jimmy and Buck.

Outside of grade school –

My two oldest friends.

We still get together.

Papa’s World – A day in the life of a SENIOR!

As we neared our early beginnings of “SENIOR” life –

We did the research and selected a supplement to check off all the requirements –

Of a Healthy Lifestyle.

That was over twenty years ago!

We needed to get more fruits, vegetables, and berries into our diets!

That to us was a hard thing to do –

Being a SENIOR, you just do not consume food as much as you used to!

Our lives changed in those early years.

We became more health-conscious.

Walking for me and running for Sherry!

Our research led us to a Supplement that crossed the “T’S” –

And “DOTTED” the “I’S”.

Juice Plus had all the research published in Journals on health.

Proving to do what was claimed.

It was easy to add to our busy lifestyles as SENIORS!

There were CAPSULES – 30 nutrients in a capsule that went immediately into the bloodstream.

There were GUMMIES – Fruit – Vegetable and Berries –

That you ate and did the same as the CAPSULES!

And then there were several drinks –

FRENCH VANILLA – DUTCH CHOCOLATE and the above SUPER POWER!

All tasted good and became for me –

A way to curb my appetite while getting the NUTRIENTS into my bloodstream.

We have continued this supplement for over twenty years.

Taking it with us wherever we travel in the world.

It has become a staple in our SENIOR YEARS of living.

Volunteering – The Protection of Sea Turtles –

From mid-May to early October each year.

We are now in our fourth season.

Our seniors’ lives are active –

And to have a source of Nutrients to take every day –

Has become a staple in our lives!

Today – I am 77 years old – Sherry will be 77 years old.

We choose the senior lifestyle of health and nutrition –

On the beach for our 75th birthdays in 2024.

Living life to the plus –

One day at a time.

SENIOR LIVING – STAYING HEALTHY.

Papa’s World – Memories with past pictures!

My memory here is the twins –

Taylor and Cassidy –

We’re helping Papa clean up the leaves from our yard in Brambleton, Va.

I am thinking they were perhaps 2 to 3 years old.

If only we could turn back time and once again enjoy these precious moments!

MEMORIES WITH PAST PICTURES!

Sherry with the two oldest granddaughters –

Maddy and Ella!

I love the way Maddy has her arm around her grandma –

And how she looks at her face.

Sweet little Ella –

We called her “TINY” –

Today she stands about 5’10” –

No longer the “LITTLE” one growing up!

MEMORIES WITH PAST PICTURES!

My two oldest longtime friends –

Bobby – we went to grade school and graduated together.

Jimmy on the right –

We played softball together in the mid 70’s and beyond –

I was at his wedding to Dottie –

We took our kids to the beach when they were young.

We worked together at AOTC-Dal-TILE-

And to this day, we still get together a couple of times a year.

MEMORIES WITH PAST PICTURES!

The day Tammy and Marcus were married.

Opportunity came in 1999 –

We transferred to Northern Virginia for Dal-Tile.

That one door opened, and we chose to walk through!

Setting up a future that would not exist today had we not made the choice.

Tammy – who had graduated from college and was living near Rochester, N.Y.

Decided to quit her job and follow us down to NVA!

In doing so –

She met Marcus – they were married, and today we have –

TAYLOR – CASSIDY and BODE!

All because that door-opportunity opened and we went through!

Today – Taylor – Csssidy and Tammy-

Today – Marcus – Bode and Tammy.

We made that choice in 1999, and Tammy followed us to NVA!

Because of that, we have Marcus as our son-in-law and the three grandkids!

Papa’s World – Cold – Winter – PUZZLE TIME!

This past Winter, we had a major N.E. snow cyclone!

It started around 6:30 PM, and 15 inches later –

There it was!

This was RARE for this area –

Maybe once in 30 to 40 years!

But at least there was very little ice!

Since we do not own a snow shovel –

I used my leaf blower –

The snow was powder-like-

And after hours –

I cleared a path to the street for our car, which we backed into the garage.

And the sun came out, and the melt started right away.

We had strong winds during the storm, which came up the East Coast from the S.W.!

Parts of the grass were wind-swept bare –

And parts had two to three foot “DRIFTS” –

The driveway was part of those drifts!

Then my good friend “JIM” showed up with a snow shovel, and we cleaned the other half rather quickly.

Sherry concentrated on the end of the driveway, where melted snow turned to ice –

And clogged the drain to the street run off!

She freed that up as Jim, and I cleared the driveway.

By the end of the second day of sunshine-

The driveway and road were clear and free of snow and ice.

The hot sun – although maybe only 45 to 50 degrees outside –

The major difference is living here in the South.

Everything melts away within four to five days!

But – a side result of all this –

ARE PUZZLES!

I groan from the inside as Sherry finds them from the closets, cupboards, or thrift stores!

Here is the kicker-

I FIND MYSELF CONSTANTLY HOVERING AROUND THE TABLE, FINDING MATCHES!

It becomes addictive for me! LOL

Even finishing one up – breaking it apart-

Reboxing and dumping the new one out!

Finding the edges – and turning all those 300 pieces over.

And then, as habit is –

Sorting them out and separating them into colors and like pieces!

I AM OBSESIVE!

That is why I GROANED INSIDE when she put the first one out!

Some pieces are much like this! LOL-LOL-LOL!!!!

But – I must admit – it is good for the brain –

And something to do during the cold outside!

It is far from the snow we had back in NVA!

There, it took months to melt.

Less than a week later, the melt is complete.

Our plant sits on the inside window ledge-

Absorbing the sunshine from outdoors.

We are back to normal after a rare Northeastern snow blast cyclone that occurred mostly near the shoreline.

Papa’s World – Everyday life – Family and Friends!

Ocean Isle Beach Causeway Bridge!

We live on the mainland close to this bridge.

In ten minutes, we will cross the bridge.

Our lives changed when we moved South.

We left friends and family behind.

Some friends have since moved down near us.

Family has been to visit numerous times, and we have made the trip back to see them often.

Which, before we sold our house, we said we would do.

The trip back up I95 is not one I cherish.

So we try to stay off it as much as we can.

But this area –

Close to three beaches, stores, and entertainment –

Is suited for us.

In the five years we have lived near here-

We have experienced two snow and ice storms.

Very rare for this area.

We have experienced one hurricane – Category 1!

I have doubts if we will stay for 2 or 3!

Time will tell.

But the sun and blue skies –

The warm weather –

The golf is just across the road, and there are 30 other courses nearby.

Entertainment – shows and acts –

Is just thirty to sixty minutes away.

Sipping coffee and tea on the ICW –

Volunteering for The Protection of Sea Turtles each summer.

Live bands are in concerts all around us for the summer months.

Festivals in the other months of the year.

The three youngest grandkids love to come and spend time with PAPA and MORMOR!

The three oldest have been here also.

Their lives have changed.

Two have graduated from college, and the youngest is in her first year of college.

But the bonds remain there.

My two sons and their families have been to visit us.

It is a long 16-hour drive for them.

FAMILY IS IMPORTANT TO US!

We now have past friends living five to forty-five minutes away.

Others, a couple of hours.

We get together and continue those friendships.

FRIENDS ARE IMPORTANT TO US!

In retirement, we have no schedule.

An afternoon sitting in the shade of Sunset Beach Park –

Reading and watching the boats traveling up and down the ICW!

Our dreams have come true in our senior years.

An early morning coffee and tea at the OIB marina-

And 59 Causeway bar and grill.

Watching the boats come in or just relaxing!

This is our life now.

We also have been practicing Healthy alternatives for over twenty years-

Papa’s World – My thoughts on the early years!

First thing in the morning –

My one cup of coffee to start my day!

I did not always drink coffee!

In those early years –

I drank a cup of tea with my grandma.

But she introduced me to what she called “COFFEE SOUP”!

She raised her family of 11 children –

After going through the DEEP DEPRESSION herself.

Being on the farm –

They harvest their own grain and wheat.

Raised their own livestock.

Chicken and eggs – goats – pigs – cattle-

Everything they needed to survive.

Out of all that came things to eat that you normally would not think of!

“COFFEE SOUP” was but one!

She would take a thick slice of homemade white bread.

While sizzling side pork bacon was in the skillet.

The smells were out of this world.

Coffee percolating – and a plate on the table with that thick slice of white bread.

She then would pour some coffee over the bread and some farm milk.

Cover that with lots of sugar and put the sliced pork on the plate.

I was in heaven –

But sadly –

Have never had it again since those early years!

“CRACKERS AND MILK AND SUGAR”!

Another of my grandmas’ treats that she would fix for me for lunch.

She would take everyday crackers and break them up in a bowl.

Then she would cover them with whole milk.

A sprinkle of sugar and I was all set.

Still to this day, I think of this –

But – since that time, I have never repeated it!

For dinner and leftovers all week –

She would make up this huge pot of “BEAN SOUP WITH HAM AND BACON”!

Again – thick slices of homemade white bread and butter.

Bean soup – this is one of the dinners we have in our home every so often.
Missing is the homemade white bread –

Well – sometimes Sherry makes it!

We usually have the leftover ham and bone for the bean soup!

Once a month, Sherry makes it for me.

She loves it also.

And yes- leftovers.

I LOVE LEFT OVERS as we had them all the time growing up-

And we both continue this practice to this day!

I have noticed the younger generation does not do this as much

Some leftovers taste better to me the second and third day after!!!!

My father would sit at the head of the table with the pancake griddle.

He would be making Pancakes or Salmon Patties.

My grandmother and mother were Irish Catholics.

He was of Northern Irish ancestry.

This would be on Friday nights –

And at that time –

IT WAS NO MEAT ON FRIDAYS AS CATHOLICS!

He would never eat the Pancakes or Salmon Patties.

Instead, he would have his TRADITIONAL OYSTER SOUP!

I am so happy I liked Pancakes and Salmon patties.

Just the look of the soup was enough to turn me away!

After my grandma passed away –

On Friday nights, we would travel to Olean, N.Y. –

Just across the NYS line.

DESTINATION – OLEAN MOOSE FISHFRY’S!

BEER BATTERED FISHFRIES!

Friday night FISHFRY’S at the Moose became a tradition in my later youth years growing up in Eldren, Pa.

And an extra treat for my brother Mike and me –

My parents would stay at the Moose with their friends-

And partied while we went to the movies –

Just by the Moose.

I remember seeing OLD YELLER! ( I think that was the name)

There were other movies, and we always got popcorn and a drink!

We are in the middle of maybe 30 golf courses within a half-hour drive.

While we do not play multiple times a week –

We try to get out as often as we can.

We are satisfied playing nine holes and then finding a place to eat out!

Usually teeing off around 2:00 pm.

That puts us done in like 2 1/2 hours-

Just in time for an early dinner.

There are so many places to golf and then dine around here.

This year, our granddaughter-

Taylor has applied to be an intern.

She has signed up for two weeks and will be involved every day in different capacities!

Sherry and I will be with her at all times!

About two years ago –

During a time when she was here –

At one of the weekly “TURTLE TALKS” –

They talked about being a summer intern and the date that the application had to be in!

Two years later, she remembered that talk and the date-

And reached out to Sherry to tell us she wanted to do this –

Her mother helped her fill out the form, and this summer –

She will be here as the eggs hatch-

To be a part of the PROTECTION OF SEA TURTLES –

And works weekends at the barn, cleaning and grooming horses.

Papa’s World – As a SENIOR – AGING!

AGING – Where have all the years gone?

With that being said, I feel blessed!

I am happy with my life- everything I have done and how I lived.

Now – in our SENIOR years-

We have settled in at Cameron Woods Community –

And in a few months, five years have passed!

We have made this home “OUR HOME” in our Senior years!

We enjoy golfing –

Not very good at it –

But – just being outside-

And the chance for a par, or if lucky, a birdie.

I am just happy not to lose my ball! LOL

We live near so many golf courses.

And I purchased a card called “THE TRAIL CARD”!

That gives me a discount on a great number of courses and as a guest-

Sherry also gets a discount!

Today, we are at the age of just being satisfied playing nine holes-

Then going out to dinner as we prefer to play around 2pm.

We have lifelong friends with whom we play or just get together-

Movie – dinner or a show!

Today, we live 38 miles from them in OIB.

We now have a lot of friends who moved to NC and SC, and we meet up with them!

Our Community entrance!

We selected this community because of all the land and trees that are protected and will remain here.

Yet, we are but a few miles from the beaches, shopping, and entertainment.

SOUTH CAROLINA – the border is but 7 miles away.

Our community is quiet, yet we know many people.

My grade school buddy – Bob and his wife Pam-

Have leased a home nearby after 61/2 years of RVING all over the country!

They are testing it out to see if they like it here and yet still be a day’s drive from families!

Our neighborhood friends –

A friendly Steelers vs. Bills get-together!

Another football game watch!

At a open air concerts at the park in OIB!

Debby – Papa and Sherry –

These are the days when the bin is changed.

Then there is Tuesdays!

That is the day we make sure all trash baskets in the house are cleaned out!

The garbage bin is rolled out around 4pm.

Wednesday morning –

The garbage truck comes and empties around 9am.

BUT – That sometimes does not happen until the afternoon!

WHY? I do not know –

But to make sure it is out there –

We- the neighborhood – put out the trash late Tuesday afternoon!

So – for memory – that takes care of Monday – Tuesday – Wednesday and Fridays!

SPORTS!

Football – NFL – they play multiple days of the week!

And we have two favorite teams –

The Commanders and the Bills!

And that helps with memory also!

Ever since my father took me to games in the mid 50s-

I have been a faithful follower!

We have been maintaining our healthy living for over TWENTY years.

LOL – HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Papa’s World – Sunshine – blue skies – beach life!

A view of Ocean Isle Beach from the “GROIN” area looking SW.

The area behind the “GROIN” pictured here –

It is eroding fast!

The dunes are almost gone, along with the trees and vegetation.

The surf comes in and pulls the sand out.

The “Groin” was put here to stop that from happening where the houses are.

A beach replenishing pumped acres of sand in from dredging operations.

First and second avenues had disappeared, and third avenue was in danger of vanishing!

At high tide,

The ocean water actually was almost under the white house-

But for huge sandbags –

Surrounding it!

Those bags remained there, and sand blew in over them.

Such is beach life –

We chose to stay on the mainland –

And commute to here when we want to!

SUNSHINE – BLUE SKIES and BEACH LIFE!

This is the OIB public park on the island.

Open-air concerts are held here from mid-May to the beginning of October.

After October, there are festivals held here!

It is one of the perks we knew of when we decided to build our home in –

CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY!

SUNSHINE – BLUE SKIES and BEACH LIFE!

Our home –

The driveway looking toward the sunrise in the East.

This part of the coastline faces almost due South-

Because of the curvature from Charleston to the Outer Banks.

The storms tend to come up the coast and veer out, but sometimes –

They hit.

We have had one Category One storm.

It was scary, and not sure if we will stay for the stronger ones.

We are back some two to three miles from the coastline.

It is the wind I worry about and the protected nature trees we have here.

We have protected wildlife areas here and large trees behind the house.

But – the wind seems to come sideways, and the trees move in that direction-

And not toward the house.

The beauty of all the trees is one reason we chose this community-

Instead of all the clear-cut ones.

And in the picture, you can see a little part of all the trees!

SUNSHINE – BLUE SKIES and the BEACH LIFE!

LOL – HAVE A GREAT DAY!

PAPA’S WORLD – FAMILY TIMES!

Papa’s World – Past memories – family and friends!

My journey through life these past 45 years has been amazing!

You see –

That is about the time Sherry and I started seeing each other, plus a few months.

Our lives together have spanned all that time.

We raised two sets of children –

Her two daughters and my two sons (they still lived with their mother).

Those days were a struggle as money was just not there.

But we made do!

June 25th. 1982 – our wedding day.

The early years were spent living way out in the country!

The daughter’s school was about eleven miles away,

And my son’s home is about fifteen miles away.

We were constantly driving the kids back and forth.

Our driveway was 1/10th of a mile long!

Good for sled riding in winter snows –

But had to be plowed often.

We could just see the neighbor at the end of the driveway,

And the same across the hill at the other neighbor.

Cindy and Dottie –

Two of our earliest friends,

Along with Buck and Jimmy, their husbands.

Cindy – Dottie – Sherry – Buck and Jimmy!

Our friendships have lasted since the end of the 70’s and into the 80’s!

We have vacationed together and traveled the world.

Our children were all involved with us as friends!

Today we are all retired –

All have grandkids.

Life has been good-

And as seniors –

We live as healthily-

As we can.

We have taken a supplement for over TWENTY years!

PAPA’S WORLD – HUMOR AND POSITIVE THOUGHTS!

Papa’s World – Growing old – living healthy!

In our senior years – closer to 80 than 70!

Our journey began in 2005!

We had moved to Fairfax, Va., and then to Brambleton, Va.

Sherry had been searching for a food supplement.

We had given up several unhealthy items in our diet.

She found a three-day vendor for health at the Convention Center in Washington, DC.

Known and sponsored by “NBC” for your health.

Hundreds of vendors –

Healthy supplements and food plans, including diets, etc.

Me – I took in the entertainment and the food courts! A NO-NO!

She found me later and said she found something –

That could change our lives!

JUICE PLUS – Fruits – Vegetables and Berries in capsules!

THIRTY OF THEM – two capsules of each every day!

And the research that backed up the claims of what it said it did!

PUBLISHED IN JOURNALS!

However, I was skeptical.

I am sort of PROVE IT BEFORE I BELIEVE IT!

Well – she did –

She ordered a three-month supply –

This is the recommended supply because it takes that long –

For every cell in your body to change.

Regenerate with all those nutrients working to make you healthier!

After two and a half months –

I saw improvements.

Her complexion – her hair was shiny, and her fingernails were growing faster.

She had what I would call a glow.

And she felt better.

That was when I decided to join her and ordered my own supply!

She was not getting sick as often,

And neither did I after three months!

And when I did, it was not as bad as before.

I was feeling better!

NBC for your health –

Lucky she found it,

And lucky to come across a vendor selling the product!

We also found out it had been in existence since the late 80s !

I wish I had known about it then.

I felt the change.

My hunger for more fruits and vegetables –

We change what we eat.

I no longer drink soda!

I no longer drink milk!

I have almost completely eliminated fast food.

I have cut way back on sweets,

And I actually control my weight better!

I now weigh ten pounds less than I did when I graduated in 1967!

I drink mostly water –

A beer once in a while –

No wine or hard stuff!

And it actually is sold in over 25 countries!

We have changed since we first started –

I feel we are healthier today –

Then back when we started!

The journey to better health is never-ending as long as you are living.

It takes commitment –

As when you make New Year’s resolutions –

It is hard to do.

Temptations are there.

We have made a difference in our family and friends.

Papa’s World – Family – Friends and Memories!

The Kinzua Bridge( Via Duct) –

Just outside Mount Jewett, Pa.

Cindy – and Sherry.

Sherry was raised near here –

And this bridge is a historic landmark and now a State Park!

Built in the mid-1800s- Stretching across the KINZUA VALLEY –

The land of the Seneca Indian Nation-

It was built to transport coal from Pittsburgh to Erie!

It is almost one mile across and three hundred and ten feet high!

Trains traveled across, and this was considered one of the wonders of the world when built!

A couple of decades ago –

A TORNADO came through and took out half the bridge.

The remaining half has been preserved, and you can now walk out and view through thick glass all the way to the floor of the valley.

The rest of the bridge remains where it came down.

A center was built – like a museum-

And the whole area became a state Park!

Here, Cindy – who has been friends with Sherry since the 1980s-

Sits with Sherry –

Sherry’s father used to ride his snowmobile across the bridge.

A steam locomotive used to cross before it came down –

And while playing golf at the Kane Country Club golf course-

We would watch it come by a par three hole!

FRIENDS AND MEMORIES!

Bode – the only grandson from Sherry’s side of the family!

Before we sold the house in Brambleton, VA.

He would come to visit while his sisters were in school and his mother was at her consignment store!

Hours and hours he would spend playing games.

So quiet –

I would check on him every few minutes!

Here he was, maybe three years old.

Today he plays football, golf, basketball, and field hockey-

And more as he gets older.

He is now eleven years old and in fifth grade!

All boy – barefoot – short shirt sleeves and shorts-

Even when it is cold outside! LOL

FAMILY MEMORIES!

For as long as we are capable of doing by ourselves!

We have made our will and our plans for either one in passing!

Don’t want to talk about it?

Well, it will not go away,

And it brings peace of mind when you make those plans.

Sherry and Papa in 2024, celebrating our 75th birthday!

Day to day – you do not know when something comes up –

And when it does –

The bond you have together gets stronger.

You lean on one another.

Thus – We live day to day –

One day at a time.

Here we are – married on 6-5-1982 –

Second marriage for both of us.

This was taken in early winter 2025!

We are closer to 80 than 70 in this picture.

Yet – we still look out for each other.

The lady I married all those years ago-

She still holds a fond place in my heart.

She encouraged me to start this blog some ten years ago!

For me, it is a way to keep my memory sharp!

It causes me to focus each day on our family, friends, and neighbors!

I want to write GOOD THOUGHTS –

HUMOR and NO POLITICS!

(which is hard to do!)

POSITIVE WRITING – POSITIVE THOUGHTS –

And GOOD HUMOR-

It is also my journal on family life –

Especially for future generations to come-

To know who we are,

What we did,

And where we came from.

I invite you to follow me –

And my blog!

It now has some 660 subscribers-

(Free) worldwide!

I only know maybe 4 or 5 of these folks.

Any day I can open my site-

And ten countries worldwide are reading!

I also advertise my wife’s website,

Which has products for healthy living-

And we selected twenty plus years ago-

To enhance our healthy aging!

Sherry has had this internet business all these years –

After we tested the product on ourselves-

And we read the research-

( Over FORTY PUBLISHED in Journals)

To prove-

It was what it said-

It was.

On her site,

You can read the research –

That is the Saturday assigned for our church-

In the area, churches to help out!

Also, Sherry signed up to help out with serving communion.

We take our health seriously!

A lot of food and drink –

We cut out of our lives twenty years ago!

Especially me!

I was a fast food junkie – (McDonald’s) –

And also ice cream and milk, and soda!

I do not eat many sweets –

But chocolate- (MILK) –

Is my downfall-

I am diabetic –

And must watch what I eat, (I TAKE MEDS)

I drink mostly water all day!

I do not drink wine-

Or hard stuff!

I will have a beer every once in a while!

In 2013, I had a major heart attack!

An open heart surgery with four bypasses!

So I am on medications –

But I follow a pretty strict guideline!

My choices for a supplement to help me-

JUICE PLUS!

I will take this every day for the rest of my life.

I credit this with my test results ever since my operation and bypasses-

Of keeping me in line with what my life is today!

Over FORTY PUBLISHED studies –

Prove it to do what is stated.

And yes-

I treat myself almost every day to a “SHAKE” made from –

THE GOOD WITCH- SHERRY and JUST PAPA!

Papa’s World – The Old Man!

Here I am – closer to 80 than 70!

My life has had its share of ups and downs.

Early childhood growing up in a little town where everyone knew your name (AND PARENTS)!

Roller skating – riding my bike!

Playing kick the can –

Being home when the street lights came on!

Sneaking corn silk in a corn cob pipe!

Apple trees providing ammunition for passing rail cars full of coal!

Neighborhood kids – playing tackle football at the park!

Yes – I had a good early life!

Senior year – played the first game of football and then was in a car accident.

It was the year that “NAM” was on everyone’s mind.

1966!

I spent 51 days in the hospital – 41 days with a catheter.

I did not know if I would ever walk again.

My girlfriend was pregnant- I was married at 17 in a wheelchair!

In the living room of my parents’ home.

My first son was born in January of 1967!

I was learning to walk again.

Months went by – a wheelchair turned to crutches.

I was reclassified for the draft-

Married, child, and unable to pass the physical.

I was young, growing up fast!

I had to graduate, find a job to support my family, and there was no college option.

Meanwhile, I had a cane.

I managed to walk for graduation.

One week later, I was hired at the American Olean Tile company!

They took a chance on me –

Mainly because my wife’s mother worked there!

They hired me for the summer.

I had a family!

NAM was no longer a worry, but surviving was.

At the close of summer –

I lived just down the street from this museum!

They decided to keep me on and put me on second shift!

I would get ten hours of overtime every week!

My father, who was part-owner of the Western Auto –

Had retired from the South Penn Oil Company-

Managed to get me an apartment over the store to rent.

We moved from their home in September to the apartment and lived there for five years!

About six months before the ’72 flood –

We bought a church and parsonage!

The Methodist church on North Main Street in Eldred,Pa.

Just a stones throw from where I grew up!

In December of ’71 –

My second son was born –

We had moved into the house and had started converting the church into apartments.

My father had passed away in 1969 from cancer-

My mother was raising my younger brother –

And in June of 1972 –

Hurrican Agnes –

The main street was flooded with 12 to 15 feet of water –

The apartment where we had been living –

Well – it was a mass of flood waters in front and only way in or out was by boat!

We had ducked a bullet.

We worked tirelessly helping those in need.

We had to get baby formula by helicopter flown in until that was impossble!

I never went back to work for three or four weeks.

But – after the darkness –

We saw the light –

We survived.

Two sons – one five and the other about seven months,

Life was going on –

And was about to go on first shift after six and one half years on second!

Life went on –

But the marriage didn’t.

We sperated and divorced.

The boys were 13 and 9!

I continued to work for AOTC –

For a total of 47 1/2 years.

I found and married my current wife Sherry –

On 6-25-1982!

She had been married before and had two daughters.

I was their step day but they were like daughters to me.

They were younger than my two sons –

We had a family of four –

But the boys lived with their mother and the girls lived with us.

Sherry also worked for AOTC and retired with 32 years!

The Comapny later became –

DAL-TILE and Ameiracn Olean Tile Company –

Owned when we retired by Mohawk!

We had a combined 79 1/2 years of service.

We raised the children and we bought and built a combination of six houses!

Cindy – Dottie – Sherry – Buck and Jimmy –

Dottie and Jimmy have been my dear friends before I met Sherry.

Buck and Cindy knew them and were our neighbors while we lived at –

Pleasant Acres Drive in Portville, N.Y.

Dottie from whe I knew Jimmy and her –

And I attended their wedding.

On our journey through life –

Twenty years ago –

We started a health and nutrition business on line.

To this day-

We still run this business that provides us with additional income in retirement.

If this interests you –

You can contact us through this website –

https://sfitzsimmons.juiceplus.com

It is $50.00 a year to have your own business –

Your own website and all you do is send the orders in or they do it themselves over the website!

They process the order – Bill it – collect it and ship it!

Monthly you get a paid commission –

And they direct deposit it into your account!

And you help people to get a healthy nutrition of –

FRUITS – VEGETABLES – BERRIES and OMEGAS!

The GOOD WITCH and the OLD MAN!

I hope this gives some insight into my life.

It has had ups and downs-

But –

I have lived a good life.

I am happy,

And all the good and bad has given to me,

That life I have lived!

The life we have had –

Plus the friends and their daughters and Sherry’s daughters!

Dottie – Cindy and Sherry –

In front of our home in Brambleton, VA.

All from WNY and NWPA.

Cindy was our neighbor on Pleasant Acres Drive in Portville, N.Y.

Dottie grew up in the town I did and knew Cindy.

So, they have known each other for decades and decades.

We try to get together 2 or 3 times a year.

Now,

All of us are retired.

And we all live in the state of N.C.

Dottie in the Northern part of the state,

and Cindy and Buck are bout 38 miles from us –

We live in OIB, and they are just outside Leland and in Magnolia Greens!

The POSITIVES- still friends after all these years and enjoying the company,

Of each other!

All six grandkids!

Bode is the only boy!

Playing a card game –

Bode – and to the right-

Sarah – Cassidy – Taylor – Maddy and Ella.

POSITIVE – as you can see here,

They all get along! COUSINS!

Since grade school and through high school –

I have had a friendship with Bob.

After six years of RVING-

Coast to coast and North to South-

They decided to try a year in our area.

They leased a home –

Put the RV in storage close by,

And now live nine miles away.

We are showing them the area.

While it is not Florida, Maine, or Arizona-

It offers four seasons-

Almost free of snow and ice-

A lot of golfing opportunities.

And number one on their bucket list –

THE BEACH ACCESS!

A POSITIVE FOR THEM WHILE MAKING A DECISION!

Bode – the only grandson from Sherry’s side of the family!

He is going to be tall – Like Sherry – Ella and Sarah –

All 5’10 or more!

Bode is very athletic.

He plays – field hockey- flag football – golf – basketball –

Soccer – ice skates –

Basketball and baseball.

So – while he still is in grade school-

He will eventually select a sport in which he will excel!

A POSITIVE AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE!

LOL – SO MUCH TRUTH IN THIS FOR ME!

Maddy – adoring her grandmother and little(Tiny as I called her) Ella.

This photo of the two oldest grandchildren –

And their grandmother-

Sherry –

It is both PRICELESS and POSITIVE in the relationship that continues to this day!

A very BIG POSITIVE for Sherry and me for TWENTY YEARS!

We read the research and published health and nutrition articles-

And decided this is what we would take as a supplement into our SENIOR YEARS!

We have never missed a day in those years gone by!

Papa’s World- Early Mornings – my world!

Welcome to MY WORLD!

I have always been a morning person.

Waking up before 5am. – just automatic – even when I worked the afternoon shift!

As a supervisor, I sometimes had to work all three shifts one time or another!

I did not like the overnight shifts because I couldn’t sleep.

Going back to my childhood –

After my older brother (ten years) –

Moved out – I moved into his front-of-the-house bedroom.

This was facing East,

And the bright sunlight came in through the double windows!

Most times,

I would already be awake!

My early mornings have continued to this day.

That is when I write my blogs!

I sip my one cup of extra-large coffee each morning.

First, I read the online Washington Post –

Every morning!

I check my emails and messages.

I also check my blog site.

The morning is golden for me.

I also like sunsets –

Over the marsh.

I am not a night owl –

When I am tired –

It is time to go to bed!

I find that if I do not do this-

I will acquire a second wind, so to speak-

And then I am awake well into the night!

BUT- I still wake up before five AM.

I am grateful for the beginnings of each and every day!

Life is short –

Seems like only yesterday I was in childhood!

So I make the most of each and every day.

While working during my adult life-

I hardly had time to relax.

Today, as a stress relief-

I make sure I have quiet time!

I have that time in the mornings!

When we go on trips-

Since I am the morning person-

I drive first –

I drive between three and four hours before stopping!

Then it is time for a bathroom break –

Pump the gas and switch drivers.

I do a power nap and after a couple of hours –

Resume the drive!

This works for us –

And usually we pack a snack!

We also have been into healthy living for over twenty years!

Our goal is to age as healthily as we can –

Into and living day to day as seniors in our old age.

With research –

And reading the gold standard published studies-

This is what we found and started to incorporate –

Into our daily lifestyle.

On our 75th. birthdays in 2024!

If interested –

Go to Sherry’s website!

We will always take this supplement.

Papa’s World – Every day is a new day!

Yes- I live my life one day at a time!

If you ever go through a life-changing event-

You will see my perspective.

My heart attack showed me just how quickly –

Your life can change or end.

You think it will not happen to me!

But – when it does –

Your outlook also changes.

Simply put –

You become aware of everything around you!

Life to me became simple-

ENJOY EACH DAY AS IT MAY BE YOUR LAST!

Family is and always-

Has been our focus in life.

While great distance separates us-

They are always on our minds!

Here are my sons and their families.

Living to see them again one day at a time.

After 47 1/2 years –

I RETIRED!

All with the same company!

I was dedicated –

Rarely did I miss work –

I used vacation days when I was ill.

After all that time –

I had a five-week vacation.
I planned to use 1/2 day to go home and do the yard work.

It was my peaceful time-

Just me – sunshine- mowing – trimming!

Those were days I still cherish all these years later!

Today, I marvel each day as the sun comes up –

And sets at night!

I am and always have been –

A morning person!

Five AM – I am awake!

Even today, as I am retired.

But that also means I head to bed when I get tired!

Eight PM is the time I start to get ready for bed.

I find if I stay up and fight through-

Eventually, I will find my second wind,

And then I just can not go right to sleep!

Then, I feel terrible.

So – it is best I stay on schedule –

Get my rest and enjoy the next day to come!

LOL – that has been my curse through life- remembering names!

We found this twenty years ago!

We were searching for a way to age as healthily as we could.

The research was there, and we read it!

I have never missed a day in all those years.

If you want –

Go to the site and read –

You can order from this site.

Back in the day –

I would have loved this!

But – those days are past!

Today, I have to watch what I eat –

I am diabetic!

Comes from those first 50 years of my life!

Back then, I ate everything-

With never a thought!

Young and foolish!

But that lifestyle ended with me twenty years ago.

However, all those early years-

The damage had been done!

Twenty years ago – I made a switch –

Finding a supplement and then correcting my diet.

By then, I was borderline diabetic!

And unknown at that time-

Headed for a major heart attack!

Sherry became a certified health coordinator.

And she started guiding me in my life in my pre-senior years.

We changed –

No more sodas!

No more greasy foods and cut way back on fast foods,

And processed foods.

Eventually, almost no fast food.

But by this time, I was placed on meds.

While I was eating healthy-

The damage had been done!

My life had become one of maintenance.

Striving to keep my “NUMBERS” in line!

I have participated in sports my entire life-

None of that is harder than resisting the temptation to cheat!

Seeing and smelling the “STUFF” you should avoid.

I have managed to not drink sodas or milk.

Seldom fast food, except sometimes while traveling!

I have to try very hard not to do this!

Our lives today in retirement revolve around DOCTORS’ or DENTISTS’ appointments.

Our numbers remain on the good side!

But the calendar – well – Dermatologist – Dentist – General Doctor –

Chriopactor – Heart Doctor-

Tests and fasting for blood tests.

All to maintain these senior bodies.

I credit our change twenty years ago –

FINDING A SUPPLEMENT WITH PUBLISHED RESEARCH!

SOMETHING THAT PROVES THROUGH TESTING IT DOES WHAT IT SAYS IT DOES!

We try to eat more fruits and vegetables –

But it is hard to do.

Snacks have turned into celery – peppers-

Grapes and berries.

Drinks made out of nutrition.

I have almost cut out alcohol entirely.

I drink mostly filtered water.

I believe this is what stabilized all those early years.

Losing weight – I weigh less than I did when I graduated in 1967!

But I am still diabetic-
Although those numbers are almost borderline.

My life is preventive.

I have to take meds because of my heart attack and damage to my heart.

I am a survivor –
My calendar throughout the year –

Is to have tests to maintain my health.

I AM BEYOND THE BEGINNING OF MY SENIOR YEARS!

I am me!

This is who I am.

I live life one day at a time.

If any of this is of interest to you –

Papa’s World – Being a senior!

My dream since I was in my twenties!

I would kid to my wife –

“I WANT TO SELL HOT DOGS ON THE BEACH”!

We would take yearly vacations –

To a beach.

I found myself counting down the days as soon as we got there.

I formed an idea in my head-

“Someday” – I will be able to spend every day at the beach if I choose to.

I would be the one sitting on the sand and watching those folks –

Packing up after a week and leaving to go back home!

Our SENIOR years are now just like that.

We live maybe four or five miles from the beach.

No traffic and in ten minutes we are standing on the sand.

My dream has come true in my senior years!

We still travel back to NVA for the holidays.

And they all travel down to spend time with us.

Our plan for moving South-

Was to be within a six to eight-hour drive –

For us to go home-

Or family to come down to us.

As we advance in our senior years –

We might have to curtail the traveling!

But for now,

We are still able to do the trips back and forth.

Home is where our hearts are.

Blue skies- white clouds –

Sunshine- warm weather-

Hardly any snow or ice.

Yes- it can and is cold during periods of time.

But with a jacket, gloves, and scarf-

I can manage-

Taking them off as the day warms up!

Being a senior-

It seems that the cold affects me more and more each year!

My two sons –

Troy on the left and Shawn on the right-

Still live back in NWPA where they grew up!

Both have been down once or twice.

And both will come for more visits.

Love them always.

That is why our beach chairs sit high rather than low to the sand! LOL

Being a SENIOR –

And for the past TWENTY YEARS-

We have taken this supplement –

To obtain healthy nutrition in our senior years.

PAPA’S WORLD –

My site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Papa’s World – Living one day at a time.

YES! That is how I live my life, one day at a time!

I had a life-changing event when I was 64 /12 years old.

I had gone to work that morning with a sore shoulder.

I did not really think about it, as the previous Friday I had lifted something heavy!

My thought was that I had strained my shoulder and would just work it out!

But as the day progressed, it started to hurt more and more.

Four hours later, I just sat down and had my hand on my left shoulder when a co-worker came by!

He took one look at me and said he would be right back.

He came back and gave me a baby aspirin.

He asked me if I wanted him to call an ambulance, and I said YES!

He recognized that something was happening.

I guess it was my color and discomfort.

He most likely prevented me from ending up on the floor.

I WAS HAVING WHAT IS CALLED A WIDOW MAKER’S HEART ATTACK!

The ambulance arrived, and soon I was stripped to the waist.

This was during November in NVA, and it was cold out!

They moved me to the outside ramp where the ambulance was –

I was on a stretcher-

And stopped to administer something –

I was shaking from the cold.

They were talking and said they were going to bypass the nearest hospital and take me straight to the cardio-unit of a well-known heart unit.

Soon, we were on our way –

They were trying to put in an IV, and the blood shot out!

My blood pressure was skyrocketing!

They got out the shock paddles and tried to get me to relax.

I managed to start thinking of warm, comfy things.

To try and slow down my pulse.

It was a wild ride –

Never before had I experienced riding in the back of an ambulance with the siren going!

Soon, we pulled into the emergency ramp and the doors.

The back opened, and we were out and racing down the hall –

Wrong way!

Turn around and down to a set of doors –

A crew all dressed in gowns and masks awaited me.

They had called ahead, and they were ready.

By this time, my arm was killing me!
If they had told me they were going to cut it off –

I would have said GO AHEAD!

They started to move me onto an operating table.

I was both scared and aware of what was going on.

Then all of a sudden –

The pain went away –

It seemed like it was fast, but it wasn’t.

They had gone into the inside of my upper leg and put a STENT in!

Just like that, my arm did not hurt!

It was a wonderful feeling.

They were going to keep me overnight for a few days and do tests.

I SURVIVED TO LIVE ANOTHER DAY!

But this was not over yet.

They came into my room the next day and said –

You have three more Arties that need stents!

But there is one problem –

Because of their locations –

It would be too dangerous to do them.

They could be punctured, and you would die on the table!

The good news was that I could have OPEN HEART SURGERY –

And all four would be repaired.

So it was set up!

In six weeks, I went in and had the operation.

The six weeks were stressful –

Not knowing if I would survive this, but I had no choice.

I went in at 5:30 am.

They started to operate at 10am.

I went to recovery at mid-afternoon.

At six thirty, I was standing up!

I never went to the step-down unit!

On Wednesday, at 1:00 PM. –

I was discharged and standing in my living room at 1:30 pm.

I had a widowmaker’s HEART ATTACK.

I HAD FOUR bypasses and open heart surgery.

They had said I was the healthiest heart attack patient they had ever had.

They asked me if I would participate in a study!

I said no – I just wanted to live my LIFE ONE DAY AT A TIME!

BUT – I feel that had I not made a lifestyle change –

I would not be here today.

I have never missed a day in twenty years.

Fourteen one-half years later-

My twice-a-year blood tests have come back excellent.

I am on meds because of the damage to my heart during the attack and have been told-

That I will have to take them the rest of my life!

But I am fine with that.

I am now 76 years old.

I still live my life one day at a time.

Here is information on the above supplement-

I will always take it.

This is my story of my life and surviving what I SURVIVED!

Papa’s World – Writing blogs!

My blogs are about Family – Friends – Events and Past Memories!

This is NEBO LUTHERAN CHURCH in MOUNT JEWETT, PA.

The church sits on a hill called MOUNT NEBO!

Surrounded by a cemetery of the Swedish ancestors who built the –

An eight-sided church in the 1880s.

Mount Jewett is a settlement comprised of Swedish immigrants!

The church itself is modeled after a historic eight-sided church –

from their native Sweden.

The men and women of the town put their resources and time

Into constructing the EIGHT SIDED CHURCH!

Everything is left inside, and services are held there on special occasions.

Sherry attended confirmation classes here and lived just a couple of miles away!

The pews inside – some are separated by the columns –

That comes straight down in the middle of the pews.

So you either enter from the right or left side.

A traveling artist of the 1800s –

Painted a church biblical scene behind the altar.

It is still there to this day.

Almost all of Sherry’s past family is buried there.

This part of the blog is for family and future generations to come –

To know and understand the heritage of their ancestors!

WRITING BLOGS!

Sherry and I are volunteers for the Protection of Sea Turtles for Ocean Isle Beach.

Here we gather for a picture after volunteering for trash pickup along the streets of OIB!

Our volunteer work begins mid-May when the Sea Turtles begin coming ashore to lay their eggs!

There are many facets to the organization-

Sherry does NEST VERIFICATION –

She is scheduled for twenty-four hours a day-

Midnight to midnight.

During that twenty-four-hour period, she is on call –

And must be on the beach within fifteen minutes after a TURTLE CRAWL is reported –

Or a confirmed Sea Turtle Sighting!

The team meets at the beach entrance and then walks the beach –

To where the event has happened.

They then must dig and locate the eggs.

Once they have done this –

The leader of all the teams –

Verifies the eggs are there and if they can remain at the site or need to be moved-

To a safer location above the tide line.

If they move it –

It must be duplicated exactly as found, and measurements taken for width –

Depth from top to bottom.

A hole is dug to those measurements-

The eggs are then gently taken out –

And put into a bucket!

The eggs go back into the new hole-

Exactly how they were taken out.

This ensures that the hatchlings are not disturbed and the gender of the Sea Turtles remains –

Like they were laid.

The temperature inside the chamber determines the genders!

They then construct a unit that prevents predators from digging up the nest/
A barrier is then put around the area and signage attached –

Stating this is a protected nest,

And fines can be leveled by authorities.

Also, each nest I’d sponsored and –

Lamented signs are posted for the sponsors.

There are times that the team finishes one nest and proceeds to another!

Whatever happens in that twenty-four-hour period is that team’s responsibility!

Shawn is also a ranked pool player.

MEMORY IN A PICTURE!

YES, I CAN AND HAVE MANY TIMES! LOL

Family in Lynchburg, Va.

For six years, the two oldest granddaughters played college soccer in this town.

One at the University of Lynchburg and one at Radolph College.

Many times over the years, we rented Airbnb’s to stay for senior nights and games.

Papa’s World – From the past to the present!

Papa and Sherry –

On the beach on OAHU!

We really would like to return to the Big Island!

This is a past memory!

Cindy and Sherry are on our trip to Northern California.

We toured Lake Tahoe-

San Francisco –

And the wine country.

With stops at the giant Redwoods and Reno!

A cherished past memory!

The house we had built and lived in for 14 1/2 years –

In Brambleton, Va.

COVID and the Pandemic hit –

The 401K took a huge loss-

But this house gained so much that we decided to cash in!

We sold almost everything inside –

Packed up what remained into storage.

Then, for four months stayed back and forth with the families.

End of September 2020 –

We moved to North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

We searched and could not find a house we liked or an area we wanted to live in.

By chance, we stumbled upon Cameron Woods Community in OIB – mainland.

We bought a lot and in nine months total – moved in!

Today we live here –

Our home is completed –

And our journey ended happily for us.

FROM THE PAST TO THE PRESENT!

The date: June 25th. 1982.

Our wedding day.

Combining two sets of children.

Papa’s World – Growing up – streets of Eldred!

This is the school I attended from first through fourth grade.

It was built in the 1800s!

I walked from North Main Street to South Main Street.

I do not know just how far that was –

But in Winter, it was cold!

The hill behind the school was a cemetery-

But also sled riding!

The elementary classrooms were on the first floor.

I do not remember much beyond the first floor,

But there was also a basement.

Second grade was where I first loved books.

Our teacher would read the Bobbsey Twins and their adventures.

I loved that part of class!

Later on in the 9th. Grade it was IVAHOE!

First grade was in the front, and we could look out on the large yard –

That was used for recess.

Ringed by huge Maple trees!

Just around the corner on Mechanic Street was a penny candy store –

Called “AUNT NELLS”!

A favorite place to stop and buy candy!

Many memories for me here.

The firehall –

About a block from my home on North Main Street –

Every night at 10 pm. –

The siren would blow, and “CURFEW” was to be home and off the streets!

As far as I know –

It still blows every night!

Upstairs is where I went to study for my Hunter Safety Course.

I went hunting with my father and my brother-in-law, Bill Luce.

It was with my father up at the end of Barden Brook where the sharp curve to the left is –

Up over the ride on the right –

I tasted my first “BUCK FEVER”!

We had just started down the other side when a six-point Buck walked in front of us!

I emptied my 30.6 – Remington of six bullets-

I was shaking so hard that I missed all six times.

I only ever shot one thing, and that was a rabbit.

I hit the back legs –

It was trying to crawl –

I stepped on the hind legs, and it screamed!

THAT WAS IT FOR ME –

I never hunted again, and I do not own a gun.

My sister Donna –

Who was fifteen years older than me-

She, along with my grandma –

Raised me until she married Bill Luce –

He became the chief of police and mayor of Eldred.

My mother worked at the Viko and then Alcas – now CUTCO.

My dad was a supervisor for South Penn Oil Company.

I remember him taking me to work on the leases –

I would ride with bulldozers with a couple of his men.

I think OSHA would frown on that now!

But being in the woods-

Pulling the tool shed – dog house with that dozer-

They are sweet memories for me.

Bill took me hunting many times.
One time, I got cold and went back to the car.

I played the radio, and when he got back –

The car would not start.

I had run the battery down.

He did not get mad, but next time I had to stay with him!

My brother Roger is on the right.

I do not know who the women were talking to, Sherry!

This was in The Villages before he passed away.

He graduated from the Eldred H.S. some ten years before I graduated from O-E H.S.

He was my HERO growing up.

He left for college, and I moved into his bedroom at the front of the house.

I slept on the floor whenever he came back.

I was eight years old when he left.

Before he passed away –

He would ask us to come and spend the winter with him in THE VILLAGES!

I shall always fondly remember those times as we grew closer.

The WWII museum – and next to it, the expansion.

But when I was growing up

This was Frisbee’s insurance and Slavins’ gas station and furniture store!

I was allowed to roller skate down to Slavin’s gas –

But later, when I got my first bike-

I could go all over town as long as I was home before the street lights came on.

This was maybe a block from my front porch.
The sidewalks were cracked, crooked, but I skated them

Long before I was born,

The main street in the middle of town

Other than the vacant stores now and the cars here-

It looks much like this today.

The little NWPA town I grew up in.

In the foothills of the Alegany Mountains and the Alleghany River.

After we moved to NVA in 1999-

Around 2010-

We purchased our first Tower Garden-

A growing system that uses water, air, and nutrients –

NO SOIL!

IN the late spring – summer and early fall –

This worked well with the temperatures!

But during the winter –

As you see in the above picture-

We moved it inside the garage-

With grow lights and an aquarium heater.

That also worked.

In 2021, we moved into our new home in Cameron Woods Community!

Above this is the back patio.

It is here that we set up the Tower Garden in 2021.

It has been producing ever since.

Every four to six months-

We tear it apart –

Clean it up –

And then start all over again.

In reality –

It now produces twelve months a year, and we are now four and one-half years later.

Sherry – Dottie and Cindy.

We all now live in the state of N.C.

Having moved South from Pa. and NYS.

Friends and neighbors for decades and decades!

We try to get together every so often or go on trips!

Friendships – laughter and close buddies for all these years, and now living in the South!

The skies of the South in the West are close to the Atlantic Ocean in our community!

Because of the curvature of the coast from Charleston, S.C. –

To Wilmington, N.C.-

The back of our home faces almost due South!

This is looking to the West from the road in front of our home.

It is rare to live on the East Coast and yet have the back of your house face South!
