Welcome to our little piece of paradise – ten minutes away – OIB, N.C. The pier and beach access.
We live on the mainland side with the ICW between us and the beach – between four and five miles away.
We selected the Cameron Woods Community because it gave us access to the beach but in a – NO flood zone.
The causeway bridge over the ICW – we have boated down underneath this bridge and on the mainland, side is where we have two
grocery stores – and additional shopping, and a small airport.
Starting in May and ending in September – we have outdoor free concerts in the park on OIB right across from Pelican Perch bar and grill and miniature golf and the Aquarium.
You can take in drinks but they have to be in plastic cups!
The bands are top rate and usually, 3 to 4 hundred people show up – many are locals and the rest are renters of the vacation homes.
Sunsets and sunrises can be seen from the beach and shoreline.
Sipping a cocktail on the beach – sun – surf – and sand – warm waters and lots of things to do.
The East end of the island with the new Terminal Groin – placed here to stop erosion – in the upper right corner – since this was constructed – a lagoon – tidal pool forms at low tide and is a great place for families with kids as it is only one to two feet deep and is huge.
You can take rafts and float around in there and the water in summer is warm
Thanks for reading PAPA’S WORLD – livinglifedoingitmyway.blog FUN – SUN – SURF – OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C.
East end of Ocean Isle Beach – as low tide forms – giant tidal pool – one to two feet deep!
The water in June is really warm , and here Taylor- Bode – Cassidy and I wade around the pool. It was huge and a sand bar formed as the tide went lower.
The Ocean Isle Beach tidal pool is on the east end of the island is near the new groin break wall.
The grandkids played in her for a couple hours and a group of teens just laid on their stomachs in the warm water.
The area does not have many people come to it as you have to walk from your car to get to it!
But – the beach here is so peaceful and quiet.
The tidal pool makes it easy to not have to watch the little ones all the time!
You can see the new groin break wall in the background!
Taylor decided it was time to fly a kite while the other two continued to run and play in the tidal pool.
What was nice was she did not have to worry about other people on the beach as we were in a spot with no one within fifty yards of where we sat.
East end of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.
She spent a good one-half hour with the kite in the air!
You can see in the pictures just how many people were around – a great spot to spend some quiet time!
Our three youngest grandkids – Taylor – Cassidy and Bode.

East end of Ocean Isle Beach and the project “The Terminal Groin”
For the past twenty-plus years – the beach here has eroded away – taking with it the ends of first and second streets. Third street and fourth street were in danger as the waves came up and under some of the houses. They started building the break wall that extends some 900 feet straight out and into the ocean, and then a right turn and a short distance – the boulders are huge granite – three boulders to a forty-foot long trailer bed – hauled in by the truckloads.
All the beach you now see in this picture is being pumped in from the dredging of the channel behind the groin – which they do anyways to keep the channel clear for boats.
The water came up to the huge sandbags to under the pilings of these houses.
The “GROIN” will continue until late April when it will be completed. Here you see the pipes blowing out sand to form the new beach.
Large bulldozers spread the sand out and the next picture shows how deep the sand is.
The beach access after some sand addition – the last storm – water came under the steps to the sandbags and over them.
A look West along the new beach – graded – the sandbags were put in place to help keep the water back.
Sherry walking in OIB.
I will continue with the next blog on The TERMINAL GROIN PROJECT”
And the bonus – during our three mile plus walk everyday
half of that walk is on the beach!
Of course said walk comes after my morning cup of coffee!
Why for five months?
Because we do not know where we want to live
only that it will fall someplace
from here to the northern border of N.C.
We have always talked of this
But where ever we go – the criteria is twofold
We will try to stay within 7 hours of our families
in NVA.
And a place that is warm – no snow – and lots of golf!
We did not know at the time just how much Sherry would come to love this place!
Being here – it is warmer than where we lived in the winter
and we walk everyday –
hardly any traffic as we walk within a gated community –
until we cross a road to the beach.
And then after a 1/2 mile walk – we have this!
I LISTEN TO HER THOUGHTS!
She has leaned over to me and said
” I REALLY LOVE THIS WALK AND PLACE”!
A QUIET PLACE TO WORK ON HER PHONE!TOES IN THE SAND for me!WE HAVE SAVED – we have worked all our lives. We have found our quiet place – our love – and a place for family to enjoy.
We are close to the over seven hours for our trip back to NVA!
Sherry and Pam – about to start our golf adventure – Pam could not golf – still recovering from a achilles surgery
On their last full day – Bob wanted to play golf – we last played together I would guess 1965 or 1966!
A very long time ago – and he had their clubs in the RV but had not used them all winter.
Pam – who was still recovering from surgery on her heel – would do the driving and Bob rode with me.
Bob and I went to school together from grade one to grade twelve.
They have wintered the last two seasons in their RV – this time it was in Florida.
They made it a point to stop here on their way to family in Nashville before heading home in N.H.
Sherry and Pam
Waiting to tee off – we like this course which sits right on Rte. 17 in Little River – S.C. It is a short course but fun to play. Sherry and I have golfed here alone and with friends. Now – she hits it on the fairway most times – and every once in a while – will hit it just right and bingo – it goes a long ways – here is a 298 yard hole for her – and this is her drive!
When you play a scramble and her and Cindy hit from the women’s tees – it is good to have them both on your team!
After a good day of golf – we scrambled to a 44 on both nines – we took them to Cherry Grove to one of our favorite places to eat – “SNOOKY’S” on the Beach.
This has become our go to place to take visitors – food is good – and you sit ocean front just yards off the sand.
We have many – many memories of growing up together in a small town in NWPA – called Eldred.
Many adventures of sleeping out under the stars – roaming the streets after curfew at 10:00 PM.
Nothing bad – raid a garden or two – sneak some beer – campfire – canoe trips down the river –
playing sports together – proms – dances – joining the exployer’s together-
driving – family – both his and mine.
Bob and Sherry checking out the beach where we walk every day!Pam and I a selfie while they discuss the beach!Ending our day together – walking to the cars. Pam and Bob!

A bright sun rise to a eventful full day of walking – getting ready – visiting the storage unit – and finally – teeing off!Buck on the first tee at 4:40 pm. We were golfing late – Cindy had a lot of stuff to do at work!
So – the plan was made – golf nine – eat dinner and then go home!
We could of stayed with them – but – lugging all the stuff I need – my sleep machine etc. just easier to drive the hour plus drive back to the condo – besides – plenty of more times exist in the future!
Sherry getting ready to tee off on the second hole!
We played our scramble format – Buck and me – they played best ball – WE LOST!
Cindy teeing off – Sherry spotting the ball!
Now – we lost two holes to them – one by one stroke and one by two strokes!
We play even up – and we tied the other seven holes.
But – on the hole we lost by one stroke – we parred – they birdied!
On the one we lost by two strokes – they parred and we four putted – just the way it goes!
Cindy – birdie putt – made it – we parred – they are so good!
We have played this format for years and years – we at one time played couples vs couple – then we played mixed couple vs. mixed couple – but the gals challenged us – the other ways split pretty even – this way – THEY WIN!
My buddy – my partner – golfing together – we did beat them a few weeks ago – but we had to shoot a 39 to beat them!
Thank you for reading Papa’s World – my drive – second shot coming up – we four putted – double bogie – LOST!Sherry teeing off – right down the middle – both are that way!

Cindy and Sherry WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER – guys vs gals – the best is yet to come!
After dinner – we decided to drive to the beach – get out our chairs and just take it all in for a hour!
Sherry is always drawn to the surf – walking in the water – still too cold for me! LOL
The only downside to this was the wind – it was strong – and would get into your eyes!
Hardly anyone down here even though it was the mid ’70’s out!
We only brought with us our water – and a lot of people walked past us – but only a few sitting on the sand.
The relaxing nature – the quiet – only birds – sounds of the waves.
Here you can see what the wind does when it is strong and blowing – it makes the sand look like waves – no footprints remain even though people are walking by!
It was a good hour to visit regardless of the wind!

Here is our before 9:am. early morning walk – a little more crowed but nothing not expected! Looking South to North Myrtle Beach from where we enter the access to the beach.
From the beach access looking toward Cherry Grove – a few more people – but not a lot!
But – this is the beginning of the week for Spring Breakers –
and we noticed traffic getting heavey.
We have found our way around and avoid the high traffic on rte. 17!
We take the side streets as far as we can – and one side street takes up to where we can shop!
Now – in the afternoon we decided to do a couple hours of a beach day – taking and carrying our chairs to the beach. Here is the same view looking toward North Myrtle Beach – a lot more people and a lot of people in the water. But we still had our own space – no one within thirty feet of us!
Here is the same view in the afternoon looking toward Cherry Grove! And – it will get more crowed as Spring turns into Summer with vacations! We are in the open space and avoid large gatherings which happen mostly toward North Myrtle Beach town center. A lot of young H.S. and college students gather on the beach there in a large group. You just avoid them as they will do what they do regardless!
Being here is still our dream – we will come back often as we like it here –
but also where we are moving too – no traffic – country quiet – we can walk –
and still be in access to the other two beaches!
The beach here is very wide – I have been told it is the widest on the Grand Strand!
After unpacking – the very first thing they wanted to do after riding seven hours – “GO TO THE BEACH”!
They love the sand – the surf and the sound of the water and waves –
LETS WALK TO THE BEACH said Sherry!
So we did – the half mile walk through the neighborhood
To the gate entrance and then cross Hillside drive
Walk another block and cross Ocean Blvd. to the parking lot!
And then – you are standing on the sand – looking out to sea – looking for Dolphins!
Growing up – we would take Debby and her sister Tammy to the beach
Whenever we could for vacation.
Now – whenever they can – they take their families to the Ocean.
They are so excited – finding shells – talking – sticking their toes into the water! We have raised them to respect nature – to be a part of it – they love the outdoors.
Early on – we taught them to respect the environment
To not litter and see the wonders of what is around them.
Walking the sand – listening to the sound – “THE BEACH”!

Our young grandson – five granddaughters and then Bode!
From the very moment they pulled in – he asked that question –
PAPA – CAN WE GO ON YOUR HIKE?
To him – a hike is like back home – rocks – hills forest – streams!
I tried to explain to him it is different here –
But PAPA – That is not a hike – we have to go to the mountains!
Bode – entering the forest for our hike – along the ICW and the marsh land – no gators – at least we saw none!
“FOLLOW ME GUYS”!
He is a leader – and always out in front!
This is him to a tee – always staying ahead of the game – his own mind.
We walked a good mile and one half through the woods –
although he was out in front of me or alongside of me –
he never sought to run off –
staying close to me!
There were many intersections going in different directions – which way do we go PAPA he would ask – I had a map so I could tell him – he always listened to what I would say!
The twins – Taylor and Cassidy stayed close to their MORMOR ( Sherry)
We spent the better part of a hour walking the marsh and the woods
I want to come back here in the Summer so we can see more wild life!

The first thing they wanted to do was walk the beach!
Now – wouldn’t you know it that it got cold and windy the day they arrived!
It was so warm the day before people were sitting on the beach and wading in the water!
So we pressed on and walked down and onto the beach.
The wind was the culprit – making it very cold.
Even Bode has enough even though he had no shoes on!
Cassidy Taylor Bode after he put his shoes back on!
We walked to the next beach entrance and exited!
MorMor Bode Cassidy Taylor Tammy
It was a very short walk – but they got to see just how close we are!
Tammy said the kids were great – she had told them she would not stop and she didn’t making the seven hour drive in a little over six hours and they never complained!

And that night after the kids went to bed – we relaxed and watched a playoff game
We are all from Western New York
and were huge fans when Buffalo Bills made their four straight Super Bowls!
One of my favorite beers from back in Western New York!
We did a job that Sherry has been wanting to do – wash the walls of the Lanai down by hand!
The Lanai is screened in and has a vinyl siding – which with storms – gets dirty.
So – with soap and water and some cloths – we cleaned it all down
Took us about two hours –
and then we treated ourselves to BEACH TIME!
A few people were out – being this was the middle of the week. It was in the low to mid 70’s!Looking South on North Myrtle Beach – we decided to walk North – toward the pier two miles away!
This day – we did not spend all the time sitting – but walking for most of it!
We walked to the pier two miles away!
We try to walk three miles a day – and as much of that we can on the beach!
Sherry – while walking – will do her network marketing business with her phone!
This has always been a dream of mine – walking in the sand and surf every day!
Always a view in the sky – dark clouds contrasting with white – and then blue skies – and sunshine!
We had never walked all the way to Cherry Grove – point pier –
And – along the way we collected shells for a church group back home!
Beyond the tall buildings – just visible – is the pier – so you can see just how far we walked!Tidal pools forming behind me as I walked through the surf. The water felt warm – and some pools we had to walk around as they were above our knees!
This day – just to walk was relaxing – cleaning the Lanai –
We have not had a really bad storm since we have been here!
It has rained hard once – the wind was somewhat strong once!
But – there have been storms way out on the Atlantic Ocean –
that have had a impact on the beaches!
You can see the effect of a storm out to Sea!
I have noticed the erosion of the beach –
the gentle slope is now much less
and it seems that the flat part of the beach
now extends further out!
Just the other side of this dune is almost gone – another big storm will most likely wash this away! This pier looks new but is missing a section at the far end. I do not know when this happened.Looking back toward the shorelineLooking out toward the oceanAnd along the side toward the missing section
The beach has changed since we first walked on it!
There are large tidal pools now when the tide goes out
that were not there before!
Maybe when we first walked – that was not the normal?
Where did this come from?Walking the flat beach now – more flat than before!
Storms out to sea – sending the huge waves pounding the shore!
At night and in the predawn
we can hear the surf –
One of the many storm drains from main street – we have seen them dig out with a back hole!Tidal pools now where before there were none!Sherry walking the tidal pools.
