Papa’s World – Visiting Georgetown SC with friends

John – Sherry – Nancy – Papa. on the docks of Georgetown.

This was a first visit – really had never heard of it!

And it is quaint – historic and fun to walk around.

The streets are over hung with large living Oak trees

they form a canopy over the side streets!

A view from the harbor toward the side streets with the live Oak Trees

We had a lunch here in the BIG TUNA at THE OLD FISH HOUSE!

And I had a house salad with grilled fresh Grouper!

It was very good and tasty!

John and Nancy belonged to our church

and one year ago moved South to Mt. Plesant

just outside of Charleston SC.

They both sang in the choir and John sings opera.

Nancy and Sherry were in a group that was called “THE HENS”!

A group of 7 or 8 ladies who once a week got together

for lunch and a movie.

Now – it is down to 3 or 4 as the others relocated.

But we have stayed in touch with John and Nancy

and visited them on our way back from Florida

Just before the pandemic hit!

We have a lot of same likes and views

and can talk – we all are retired so it makes it fun and easy

to join up and visit – Georgetown was the half way point!

We spent a couple hours – wandering around after lunch

enjoying the warm mid 80’s day.

My kind of weather!

Neither one of us likes the cold.

We spoke of planning another trip

and we will visit them again at their home

and have invited them to visit us in North Myrtle Beach.

Now here is a blast from the past!

PBR – my favorite beer when we lived in Western New York!

Hard to find in the South!

Nancy and Sherry love walking the beach.

Papa’s World – when you get excited – see some Jimmy Buffet – relax – it will be OK!

We had been touring – listening to advice from friends

strangers – and our landlord!

We were visiting different housing neighborhoods

and came across one that we THOUGHT would be IT!

So much so that we actually had the salesman contact his manager.

Could we purchase the lot next to the model

which currently was a parking lot for the model

and place the exact home on that lot

facing the big water view pond

for the exact price of the model?

Well – we left with a package and a wait for a answer.

We were six miles from Broadway on the beach

which meant 7 miles and 15 minutes to the Ocean and beach.

Exactly what we were looking for!

And it would be a brand new home – not to big –

but – as we drove away – it was five miles to a store for food!

A perfect storm so to speak – but a little far to go and buy bread with traffic.

However – it was enticing and more so when we got the email.

“YES” was the answer and they discounted that lot by $5000.00!

Then – we heard JIMMY sing – about the HURRICANE

and this HURRICANE started to rain

into that MARGARITA GLASS

and the whole place sang along!

But the rest of the email read-

“CLOSING WOULD BE JUNE OR JULY”!

8 or 9 months away!

We listened to the song and reflected on our choice

it was there but a little out of reach.

We decided there listening to Jimmy Buffet

calm down – enjoy the journey

for we have only just begun.

Papa’s World – even the days of overcast are beautiful

The ever changing days – sun – clouds overcast!

Living life one day at a time!

The morning view from the lanai!

Ever changing the days at the beach.

The stillness on the water reflections of calmness

Each day has been different –

some wind – on the beach – but calmness here at the condo.

We walk every day if it is not raining

so far in almost a week – no rain!

The sky is moody – gray with white streaks

storms are out there somewhere

But blue sky peeking through

surf coming in or already going out!

Time has come to leave the beach

still gray – still a storm way out there

Reflected sand looking like sky!

Now – the beach walk is over

we continue on our way back to the condo.

EVEN THE DAYS OF OVERCAST ARE BEAUTIFUL!

Papas World – Good thoughts – give – pray – the World turns.

In this time – Day#58 of Sheltering –

The World turns regardless –

Try not to read the bad news – or listen to the negative

Give of yourself – food to the hungry – clothes to the poor.

Even though you see and hear all things –

filter them out – for it is up to you and me

To make this a better place.

In our time of silence – in our time of isolation –

Think how the normal is now the abnormal

and how to bring the sanity back into our lives’

The World turns regardless –

Put your faith into whatever you believe in

and make it a better place.

Positive thoughts – positive well being – positive actions

The news is full of the negative – channel it out

there are good things out there

We are humanity –

Give of yourself – help less fortunate –

Those in need – those that are hungry

donate time – collect food – and help deliver it.

Laughter – zooming – tic – tock – video – messaging

stay in touch – drive by honk your horn

Sunday streamed service

walk – ride a bike – say hello from a distance

Faith – hope -charity – love and kindness.

Sheltering Day# 58

Papas World – the angels of my life – looking down.

I am the only one left now –

First was my brother Mike who left us way too early –

I do not have many pictures of him – but I have his image –

for as long as I live in my mind.

Curly headed little red head – always smiling –

giggling – I can still hear him.

And what a golfer he became –

the first one to hit that ball 300 yards or more.

On the old number one at Smethport Pa.

The one that runs along the highway – I was with him when he did it.

He drove past the green and into the yard behind the green!

That had to be 350 yards and a little grade uphill!

He was mostly a par golfer and had he been able to putt –

Well Gene Fazio once told me –

“IF I HAD HIS LONG GAME AND MY SHORT GAME – I”D TURN PRO”!

Gene was one of the finest golfers in our area and there were a lot of them.

My sister Donna – me – my brother in law Bill – my brother Roger and our mother Mary

One by one they passed away – first Donna –

my sister who was 15 years older than me-

Who rasied me until she she was married to Bill and moved out.

She was the most kind and considerate person I have ever known.

She always could see both sides and I never heard her say a cross word.

Bill – was second to go – a Korean War vet – a truck driver and Police chief

A Mayor and a wise brother in law – always funny –

he had nicknames for almost all the kids

but he simply called me Tommy or Tom.

We were more friends than brother in laws-

Then it was my Mom – who outlived all her friends –

two children and all her brothers and sisters – cousins –

She was almost 98 years old when she passed.

She was small – always a smile – and very kind.

She was a true baker – she could bake without following a recipe.

Cakes – Pies Homemade bread and rolls –

she did it all and everyone in town knew her.

She would sit on her front porch and they would honk

and holler “HELLO MARY”!

People would pull over and stop and come over and talk with her.

She was Mary – the kind lady – but she also was tough as nails.

She ruled the roost so to speak.

I always listened to her – I did not want to hurt her.

Roger

The last to pass in this picture was my brother Roger –

who as I grew up was my idol.

He was ten years older – but in the last ten years of his life

we became very close.

He always lived far away and I lived for any information from him

I would ask my Mom – “DID YOU HEAR FROM ROGER”?

He too played golf – although not as well as Mike –

he was always a little over Par – but always under 40.

He was very smart – having been named “WHO’S WHO”

while in college.

He was a ladies man – he knew how to be a gentlemen –

he was “IT” when it came to the ladies.

Now I am the last – my dad passed from cancer when I was just 19.

I have my two sons –

My sons Troy and Shawn

I have a niece Kelli and another Jen –

I have two great nieces and they have children.

And I have two grandsons from Shawn.

Ryan and Dylan

And I have my soulmate – Sherry – my wife.

Our extended family here whom I love dearly.

WHERE FRIENDS MEET THE FAMILY!

“THE ANGELS OF MY LIFE – LOOKING DOWN ON ME”!

Papas World – Growing up in a little town – my family.

We did not know that we did not have much!

We never talked about it – we had a black and white TV.

We had numerous cars – first one I remember was when we

brought my baby brother home from the hospital in 1954?

It was a green color and I remember being in the back seat

The upholstery was a fuzzy feeling

and Mom was in the front with Mike and dad driving.

We had the old rotary phone on the wall by the steps to the celler.

Back at that time – it was a “PARTY LINE”!

And you called the operator and gave her I think three numbers.

Then it changed and we got our own number

to which I still know to this day!

And next door my sister lived and I know that number today!

I remember riding with my father and little brother

Across the state line to NY State and to Portville

some maybe 8 miles away.

To a place called “WILSON’S FRUIT STAND”!

It was a treat for us as we always got something

maybe a apple or orange

And my dad always bought a case of Carling’s Black Label

once a week!

Mom and dad drank beer –

There was a group of friends

The Framptons up the street – the West’s out on the South of town

The Howells also on the South of town.

The Petruzzi’s – ( sp ) who was my dads best friend Elmer and Angie.

The Marones – they all bowled together – played cards

and went for vacations to fish in the far North of Canada.

That was before I was old enough to go

and then my little brother came along

But I saw the pictures – my older brother – not my sister –

I do not know why she did not go?

But – my brother was friends with Ron and his father and mother

Elmer and Angie and they remained friends until he passed away

four years ago.

We have our friends today just as they did.

We never had a color TV until 1968 – after I was gone.

I actually had roller skates for a long time before

I got my first bike – a Western Flyer

Then I was off to the park and all points of the town.

My mom was small – maybe 5’2″

and my dad just shy of 6’0

Back then that was tall.

But she ruled the roost so to speak.

We did not have much – no spending money as kids.

My older brother worked and my sister baby sit.

But – I did not know what I did not know.

My memories are good ones.

I remember the very first time I heard

” I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND”

It was the H.S. cafe and a childhood friend

from when I was perhaps 10 or 11

came into the cafe singing this song as he got in line.

But that is another story for another time

We did not have much in growing up

But I retained a load of memories rich in thought!

Papa’s World – little things here and there!

We now have had “THREE SLEEPS” in our new digs!

And are loving everything we have been doing lately!

Walking with Cindy at the break of dawn

in Magnolia Greens – Leland NC.

I have always loved it here – and we have visited for the past 20 years.

Sunset over the golf course and pond at Buck and Cindy’s house.

And the very second day evening – we saw “ALLIE”!

Whom for the past five or so years we have seen numerous years!

It is a six foot or more Alligator that seems to live in these ponds!

Buck has seen him twice grab a rabbit and a goose!

So – we are aware – and stay back from the edge!

We walk – play golf – laugh – talk

as we have been friends for 34 years or more

they were our neighbors back in WNY before they moved to NC.

Then we moved to NVA and we visited back and forth.

Now – we are looking from Wilmington NC to the border of SC.

They are huge Buffalo Bills fans as we once were!

Now – since we sold our house

are beginning to follow them once again!

We enjoy outings – much the same as they do!

Beach is our calling!

Laughing – talking – playing cards –

and the last few times we have been together

WATCHING SCHITT$ CREEK!

We have watched it all one time and started watching it again.

We do celebrate special occasions

like birthdays

and special get togethers

Golfing!

Yes – Cindy brings shots of Rum Chata!

Whenever we birdie or sometimes for a par!

We do like to have fun – laughs and good times.

Playing golf games – GUYS VS GALS!

They are tough – always down the middle

always putting for at least a par or birdie.

Now – I never know WHERE my ball will land! LOL

So – it makes for fun times!

Papa’s World – journey to a surprise birthday!

We were packed to the ceiling in the car

and on top – it was also packed.

We had to have five months worth of “STUFF”

as we had rented a condo in North Myrtle Beach

for that period of time.

But first – a stop for a surprise birthday party!

Our friends in Magnolia Greens – just outside Leland N.C.

A 15 minute drive to downtown Wilmington N.C.

Buck – was turning 70!

He had no idea we were coming!

We were neighbors starting in 1986

we had known them before that

Being retired – Buck – Sherry and myself

It does not matter about the weekend.

However – Cindy – the youngster of the group

still works!

But – that did not stop her from inviting us to stay

until we moved into the condo

the following Thursday!

And we played golf three different times!

We celebrated Buck’s birthday the whole time we were there!

Her specialty is making Moscow Mules!

And she grows her own mint!

We also have always had a golf challenge

Guys vs. Gals.

And we do this also with other close friends.

So – over the course of five days

we played three times

a total of 45 holes of golf!

We went out to dinner a few times and lunch

And we brought some wine with us

Now – I am not so much for wine

but this was a anniversary issue from Coopers Hawk

and I did find it to be to my tasting!

They have a beautiful new home that Cindy designed

and was part of every single step in the process!

It sits on a point of land
With ponds and channels on three sides

And the 27 hole golf course right across the pond.

I have always loved it here

and it is on my bucket list of places to move to.

Time will tell –

A surprise birthday party

golfing with friends

a few drinks and laughs

at a lovely home and great friends.

Papa’s World – the day we left – all packed!

It took everything I had to pack this up!

But – I did it!

View from back seat passenger side!

I tried to use every nook and cranny

Taking everythin we could as we will be gone five months!

Back seat drivers side – yes – that is a sewing machine

I promised Sherry I would work it in and I made it happen!

We had to drive 6 1/2 hours to arrive at our friends house

for a surprise birthday party

so I packed with this in mind

and had the back packed so we could remove what we needed

as we were staying six nights!

Our friends are just awesome and welcomed us with open arms.

The back with our golf clubs

we ended up playing three times with them

a total of 45 holes.

Everything here had to come out

and move into their house!

We got our exercise packing and unpacking!

The carrier on top!

The car top carrier was the first to be packed

as nothing up there would come out

until we arrived at our final destination!

Y M C A !!!!

Yes we are seniors by 16 years!

But we did this all by ourselves.

Papa’s World – The final walk and then goodbye – Jo & Paul

Jo and Paul

It was both a happy and sad day – our final walk together –

and – this walk was on their bucket list –

for I had posted many times the pictures of Sherry and I walking this path.

They found it beautiful as we do

and requested that we walk along the creek !

Where we live
Brambleton Va.

It was a quiet morning –

a little cool – around 56 degrees –

but with lots of sunshine

and soon the jackets came off !

Jo Paul Sherry
at the top of the trail

During the visit – Paul and I had discussions

the politics of the day

the discord and unending drama that happens each and every day.

The stress is not worth it.

I described to him my three critiques for every day –

One – post a smile

Two – post a good thought –

three No Politics !

Sherry Tom Jo

And those are my rules I follow –

I also write about my life – family and friends –

and I try to do that daily –

Jo and Sherry

I do this to capture my thoughts –

through pictures and words –

So after I am gone –

a record remains where friends and family can read –

where those memories are preserved –

My thought on life
Sherry and Jo

We discussed stress – we discussed life –

Paul Jo Sherry

We discussed life in general and living

We discussed how no matter what we post –

the only difference it makes is to our selves !

Jo and Sherry

Change has to come from with in –

And no matter how we feel

we can not change someone else.

Today – we make a change by voting

and then vote again when it is time
