Good day everyone – we have a group of walkers that live in the neighborhood of Cameron Woods Community – and it differs each time we walk depending on the weather – and the activities each one has.
We usually meet somewhere at 9am. to walk – so far – it has been decent – 45 to 50 degrees out – sun and hardly any wind.
The beach is wide at low tide and Sunset Beach is flatter than OIB – making it easier to walk on.
This is Sunset Beach and in the far right corner – the tall building is Ocean Isle Beach – with a channel separating the two islands.
This morning’s walk was beside a calmer ocean – lots of sea shells and tracks of birds and footprints of previous walkers.
This is but one “WHY” we moved here to the border of S.C. and N.C. – any day we want can be a beach day!

PAPA’S WORLD – EARLY DECEMBER WALKING SUNSET BEACH!!!!!!
It was in the ’80’s – I believe ’83 or ’84 – we gathered a group of us – my sister and her husband Bill – My brother – my friend Jim and wife Dorothy. And – John Murphy and a few more.
We rented this house at the Outer Banks of N.C. Now – Sherry and I had gone in ’82 – with a whole load of my brother’s friends. And we went back to the same house as it was right across the road from the beach.
Cindy – ( Not there) Jim ( there) Sherry ( there) Dorothy ( there)
We had no children with us – just adults – and a few brews ! The week was friends and family – and it started off with a volleyball game in the sand at the rear of the house. Then – on the second day – we got the news flash – a storm was coming – a big storm – could be a HURRICANE !
Winter in Pa.
Now – we all are from the North – Penna. – N.W. – in the snow belt – where if you mention storm – it most likely is SNOW and or BLIZZARD ! We very seldom get the HURRICANE effect except in ’72 – Agnes !
In NWPA – you live with snow every day – and this was all new to us. We went to the fire department – got a chart – yes – we were going to chart it – when it got close we would leave !
GRAB A BEER – head to the beach – Sun – warm breeze – surf – what else could you want !
As the week went on – the notice got worse – voluntary evacuation – you have to understand –
we had been planning this for a year – it was our vacation – a time where you only got two weeks vacation a year !
RED SKY IN THE MORNING – SAILOR TAKE WARNING
Our chart was up to date – we had the radio on tuned to a station 24 hours a day – the TV also – it was kind of fun plotting the course – seeing the path as it came up from the Gulf.
But we were some 800 miles away from it ! And the weather was beautiful – never mind that NONE of us had unpacked – we were living day to day out of our suitcases !
Then – it changed – to the good – it had turned and was going out to sea – we were saved – no worries – celebrate – it was Tuesday – had the next four days – Sun – brews- unpack – head to the beach.
We turned the radio off – packed the chart up – and got up Wednesday morning to a beautiful RED SKY !
Something was up – turned radio back on – it had turned and was heading right off the coast to where we were. The wind picked up – the roads closed and we were stuck. We could not get out !
There it sat 150 miles due East -the waves were getting bigger – the wind – well some shutters blew off – yes it was scary –
but we hunkered down and then it was over. The beach across the road – part of it was gone with a good five foot drop off.
LESSON LEARNED – DON’T DRINK AND CHART A HURRICANE
Well – it was over – we still had a couple days left – we learned that these things can and are dangerous – we thought we were all right – but they change in a instant.
That was my first and last time with a HURRICANE – today – we still go to the beach – but we always check the weather – and if it seems to be coming – we do not go.
Some have passed on – the rest – we are still friends from all those years ago. We still get together every 4 to 6 months – and last September we were at the beach.
I would much rather go through a blizzard than a Hurricane and or major storm on the beach !
Just another story in the course of my life –
Papa’s World – it came – it left – and it came back !

The storm was building while we were there at the beginning of 7PM.
The clouds drifted in and you could see the front coming from the West.
Because of how the coastline curves – OIB almost faces South!
The sky to the North West was getting dark.
The clouds are moving in and behind them in the distance is lightning!
View down the beach toward the West end – the wind picked up and radar showed lightning strikes some 13 to 15 miles away!
Sherry still talking to folks but we were watching the weather on our phones!
Around 9PM. the team leader said it was time to go – so we picked up – packed everything up and got the trench smooth in case they hatched when no one was there!
Safety first – be off the beach if lightning strikes are within 10 miles!
Thanks for reading – we were off the beach and had reached home by 9:20 PM. and it opened up with a downpour – wind and lightning!

PAPA’S WORLD – STORM MOVES IN WHILE SEA TURTLE NESTING WATCH!!!!!
Good day – we are close to this beach – a short 12-minute drive and then the walkway over the dunes to the beach.
The walkway is long and goes over the sand and dunes – shrubs – small trees and a habitat for all kinds of native species.
Along the way – you can see the sun beginning to dip below the horizon – many bushes line the walkway.
Looking back along the walkway to the beach houses – this is the far end of Sunset Beach – from here on it is BIRD ISLAND –
no beach houses – just sand and dunes and ocean surf!
You may find it hard to park here as it is limited and no blocked driveways and no parking allowed signs.
When you can find parking – tires are not allowed on bike paths or sidewalks.
But – when you do find one it is worth it to be able to walk this out to the beach.
Sherry and Papa at the end of the walkway and the ramp down to the beach – the sunset is fantastic, behind us is BIRD ISLAND – nothing but sand – dunes, and surf – a mile plus from here is the KINDRED SPIRIT MAILBOX which has existed for more than forty years. Google it and read the history of this historic place.
Sherry walking down the ramp to the beach in the sunset – they sky always change here depending on the clouds!
After walking on the beach – time to head back and the final rays of sun through the foliage on the walk back.
Thanks for reading PAPA’S WORLD – livinglifedoingitmyway.blog SUNSET AT SUNSET BEACH – NATURES WONDER!
Sherry and I signed up to walk the East end of OIB during the TURTLE SEASON and report and nests we should find.
On this section of OIB – there are no houses – only sand and surf for about one mile!
A great place to walk – hearing only the surf and some birds.
We walk all the way to the point and a little around it toward the ICW side.
Just before the point, we came upon this sight – a chair with a pair of pants draped over the back – a waterproof shoe in the surf – tackle boxes all open – a battery with jumper cable hooked up –
fishing poles and a pole holder for the poles.
STRANGE – no one around!
And then around the corner out of sight – two fishing poles in their holders – bait on but laying in the sand and no one around except a boat with a man standing on it!
It was a deputy with a badge and he ask me if this was my stuff!
I told him no and around the corner was the chair and tackle boxes and more poles and I held up the shoe and said we found this also.
He told me to just place the shoe by the pole which I did and he got on his walkie-talkie to the police department.
He thanked us and said he would take care of it.
The chair and all the equipment just sitting on the beach and no one was around!
We continued our TURTLE WALK – not seeing any signs and went back to our car!
On the way back two police trucks and an ATV passed us going toward the chair and poles.
Also – our walk time is spent picking up trash off the beach and then report in what we see as far as signs of turtles!
Sherry is about to throw our trash collection away from our TURTLE BEACH PATROL!

Our daughter – Debby and husband Mike – Sherry – papa – Ella – Maddy and Sarah – from NVA!
They came and spent nearly a week with us in Cameron Woods Community- N.C.
We had planned this for a couple months – and as always – tears when they left!
Mike – Steve – Sherry and Diane – both neighbors and friends – came along with us on the ICW!
Sherry had attended a fundraiser for the food pantry put on by our church.
She purchased $20.00 in tickets and her name was drawn twice –
once for breakfast at a dinner and the second time as the winner of a 9-hour day on the ICW
with a PONTOON BOAT!
Mike – Steve and myself piloted us down and back up the ICW stopping at the new place to eat on the ICW-
THE BLUE DRUM! We had a great lunch and fun time boating.
On the way back – we stopped on the back side of Bird Island – where boats pull up to the beach and you hang out on the beach!
Papa – Mike and Steve stand on the ICW beach and watch a very large boat that had just come up the channel from the ocean and passed where we had beached the pontoon boat!
Maddy looked out over the cove on the backside of OIB at OIB FISH COMPANY where stopped for drinks and appetizers.
We spent two days on the beach – one day on the boat and two days at the pool.
We took them on our Turtle Patrol walk at sunrise on the East end of OIB.

PAPA’S WORLD – FROM LAKE HOLIDAY TO CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY – FAMILY VACATION.
As the day begins at the condo – the build of our new home begins some six-teen miles away – in Cameron Woods at Ocean Isle Beach – N.C. We searched and searched – but all in vain as the cost to buy was equal or more than to build what we wanted!
Our view here I shall always remember – in all we will be here for nine months!
I captured this shot as a flock of geese were coming right at me before
rising up over the lanai and roof.
We decided to build – that way we would have everything we wanted
A single story – no stairs – covered front porch – screened in covered lanai.
Close to the beach ( four miles) in the country!
Close to golfing ( over 20 courses near by)
And with in 6 1/2 hours to travel back home
or family to travel here!
Materials for the new home – ground is ready – all utilities in and inspected – waiting for pour of concrete!Forms and moisture barrierSome view in one direction of neighborhood – I think in total maybe fifty homes will be here. When done – a two car garage with pull down stairs and finished storage overhead.
We will have around 1900 sf. of heated space –
in addition to a 140 sf covered and screened in lanai
and a open 10 x 14 concrete patio.
There will be a covered front porch
and views of the neighborhood.
The back will be woods with no one building there
as it will be a conservation area.
We will be four miles to Ocean Isle Beach and six miles to Sunset Beach
A thirty minute drive back to North Myrtle Beach
and a fifthteen minute drive to Calabash
and a fifthteen minute drive to Shallotte.
All this in the middle of some twenty golf courses we will be playing!
The concrete is poured – and rain is now slowing up everything!
But – all the inspections have been completed
and our contractor calls us every Monday to give updates
and answer any questions!
The forms are out – concrete is in – framing will be next!View of the garage and the woods behind the new build.
We drive over every Sunday – no one is working!
That way – if it is not raining – we can get out and look it over!
This will be our third house together building.
All three were unique and we have input on all of them.

Living in Ocean Isle Beach – Cameron Woods – 7 miles to the S.C. border –
the weather is what I like – yes – we have had that rare ice and snow –
but then you get days such as this where it is tee shirt – shorts and sandals!
That is when our resident pond Aligator comes out to the sun itself!
We have a walking trail around this pond and sometimes we see it and other times we do not.
We have seen tons of turtles in here – all types of birds hunting for fish and some have seen otters.
I think there are two gators in here and some babies although I have never seen the little ones or two gators at the same time.
And then it is but a short ten-minute drive to the beach – where the sound of the surf and warm sand entice you to bring a chair and just sit in the warm sunshine!
Tee shirt – shorts and no shoes – toes in the sand – livinglifedoingitmyway.blog
Just a little over a month later from our New Years Eve beach gathering and toast to 2021
We once again were back to see the sunset – only it was windy and cold –
far from the 65 degrees of NYE!
The approaching sunset peeking through the trees!
Papa – Diane and Sherry
We first parked and walked to the end of the street – here the last of the end of the houses –
and this then begins Bird Island – marshland protected and wide-open beach.
Our neighbor Diane
The tide was going out!
Here you see the last of the houses on the marsh and bayside – with the tide going out – This is the end of Sunset Beach and the beginning of Bird Island.
Sun setting – time to go to the beach.
This is where we gathered for NYE and drank a toast to 2021!
The pier and people walking the beach.
Sherry – braving the wind chill – it was cold.
As we looked out on the ocean – to think we can do this every night if we want to –
and there still is Ocean Isle Beach – living our dream.
One final look before we returned home – Sunset at SUNSET BEACH, N.C.
Side by side – over 40 years – making memories together.
The time has rushed by – youth to middle age to now autumn years – together as one.
Here we are today – but we were there 40 years ago – starting a journey – bound by love – together in spirit.
Spending time with family in those early years – continues today – although they are gone – memories still exist of the good times – the fun times and the love of each other. Sherry’s mother and father – Bill and Barb.
Today we have become what her parents were to our children and now us to their children.
All of the grandchildren – Christmas at our home in Brambleton, Va.
Past memories – past family gatherings – looking to the present and future of family times to come.
The present – doing what we love – golfing together.
Just the two of us during the week – afternoons – we are right in the middle of 20 plus golf courses.
The present also brings us to a small bar 1 1/2 miles from the house – watching the BILLS with friends.
A step outside of this small bar – to observe the sunset next to the small airport of OIB.
We are here now in OIB – making new friends – members of a church – exploring the area –
doctors are here now – life is going on – making new memories – but never forgetting the past ones.
We have managed to be 6 to 8 hours away from the family – but we have room for all of them.
Beaches – golfing – hiking – entertainments – venues – shopping – we are excited to share all of that.
Inviting fire on a chilly night

A large piece of driftwood sits on a sand dune just above the mailbox – dedicated to the man who put it there some four and one half decades ago – along with another hippie female friend.
We had read about this famous mailbox – several books have been written about it –
It is a 1.4 mile walk South on what is called Bird Island – an nature preserve –
located on the Southern half of Sunset Beach in N.C.
I am not sure if this is the other half – the lady friend of Frank – but this is one of two benches next to the mailbox – a place to sit and think and write your thoughts in the journal provided in the mailbox.
The large piece of driftwood with the plaque – overlooking the nature preserve – there are trails back in there to explore – walk in silence with only the breeze – the calling of the birds and the surf .
Papa – at the entrance to the benches and mailbox – waiting as another guest takes her picture.
I can not even imagine how all those years ago – they managed to carry everything here to install the mailbox!
The KINDRED SPIRIT mailbox and benches – this is maintained by persons unknown – has been all these years – and replaced many times as the old ones have slowly eroded away.It is a lonely spot – yet so many people walk here everyday and leave there writings and thoughts –
throught the years – those journals have been preserved and are considered historical writings –
and are preserved in a museum! I do not know which one but I plan to find out.
The view behind the mailbox at the top of the sand dune – the nature preserve and in the distance –
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH – when on Sunset Beach – go South and I think at 40th. street – the end –
just find a place to park alongside the road – be sure your tires are completly off the pavement – and if a bike path off that also.
Then find the beach access and come to a sign at the beach – it tells you the distance to the mailbox and further down the beach – the jetty and the mouth of the river – where the Casino boats from Little River enter the ocean – going out to the International border line to gamble.

My first thing every morning – fix my cup of coffee!
And then it is onto writing my blog – livinglifedoingitmyway.blog !
All this is early – and depends on when I wake up – mostly bathroom! LOL
Once up – it is hard for me to fall back asleep – so I just get up and fix that cup of coffee!
Pushing the garbage can outside before 6 am. which is the time they want it out there!
Sunrises here are really something – the ocean is but four miles away!
This street for construction is almost done – two houses left – right across the street –
and one down two lots from us.
All the rest are down where the corner is and then around the cul-de-sac.
Passwords – I write them down!
Everything today needs a password – and I just can not remember them all – so I have a special place
I keep them safe – where I am the one who knows where to look ( Sherry knows also) !
The entrance to our development – Cameron Woods – Ocean Isle Beach – mainland side.
It is a quiet place except for the on going construction – which by years end should be done where we live.
The new phase is now having the infrastrucure put in and is away from us.
Ocean Isle Beach and our grandaughters – only four miles away.
We choose this area because we are on the mainland side – then the ICW – then the houses and business
of Ocean Isle Beach and the beach itself!
We also are close to Sunset beach – another three miles!
We are near the border of S.C and a lot of golf courses!
All the towns and communities have free open air concerts – running from mid May to mid September! And of course Calabash – the Seafood capital of the world! Only seven miles away – a place we take company!
This area is full of places to visit and dine – all with views!
And another major reason we moved here – golfing – we try to golf once a week – and we have 20 plus courses right where we live to choose from!
Thank you for reading Papa’s World – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog email : fitztdf@fitztdf
Sitting in our lanai – we decided it was time to take a break from unpacking and enjoy our first walk on the new beach!
Papa walking the surf line – the water was warm! Made me want to have my suit on and wade in!The beach here is not as level as NMB or as wide and the waves on this side of the pier – are rougher!
This is the view looking North after you enter the beach by the community center where the showers and bathrooms are – a large volleyball net is here as well as a very long walkway and deck system.
dThe beach also is not as crowed as back in NMB!
This is more of a resident area beach!
Looking South toward the pier – we walked down there to the other side and it was not as rough or the waves as big!
THANK YOU FOR READING PAPA’S WORLD! MY BLOG: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog
Sherry – always drawn to the waters edge – wading – it was really warm – both in and out of the water!
As we leave the beach entrance we use almost every day – and walk back to the condo – a two block walk to the gate.
This is the property just before we enter the gate at Ocean Keyes – We love this house and grounds!
This is along the sidewalk outside the fenced in yard – almost everything here comes back every year!
They have irrigation out here as well in the enclosed yard. It is shaded by Cypress trees –
and it is a inkling to what is inside the fence!
As soon as you walk through the gate – you see these three white ducks!
I have given them the names of HUEY – DEWEY and LOUIE ! LOL
Sherry – who is a CERTIFIED HEALTH COACH – will run ahead of me – then turn around and come back – to get her heart rate up – but I think she sees this sign and off she goes! LOL
I have to keep up or the sign in RED is for me!
Thank you for reading Papa’s World – the next blog will continue the walk back through Ocean Keyes!
Toasting to MOTHER’S DAY with good friends – Bob and Pam and Sherry! CHEERS!
We had planed this little get together for some time now.
They had been in Florida for the winter in their RV.
Moving around down there and then working their way back North.
They were in a campground eight miles from the condo’
So for three whole days – we gave them a tour – but the first day was Mother’s Day.
After their arrival we went down and joined them – sitting around – talking – and we stopped and brought them salads.
Then it was for a very quick walk on the beach where they were camping!
It was so WINDY – we took this picture and headed back to the campsite.
A lot of self control in not staying on the beach for a walk! LOLThe next day we picked them up – toured our new home and discovered the drywall had been installed!
Here – we are at Oyster Rock on the ICW in Calabash N.C. where we had reservations for dinner.
A walk along the boardwalk outside of Oyster Rock – here is where the fishing boats return with their catches!Charter and fishing boats – they provide fresh catch for these places – including Oyster Rock – on their menus.Fresh catch – Flounder – broiled!Fresh catch – Mahi-Mahi! Catch of the day!And of course – down here – HUSH PUPPIES!Pam Sherry Papa Bob – a wonderful Mother’s day dinner with good friends!
At Oyster Rock in Calabash N.C. on the ICW!

I have wanted to stop in here and have lunch ever since we got here on 10-1-20!
It is a local place right on the beach in North Myrtle Beach!
These places always catch my eye – I just get a feeling about them!
They generally have good food and live music –
and this day – the food was great – a salad with grilled fish – and the music?
Well – right across the street is a block long and a block wide vacant lot –
And it was packed with tents – you could rent – and thousand of people!
A huge stage and three bands playing for six hours!
WE WERE RIGHT ACROSS FROM THE OPENING OF NORTH MYRTLE BEACH MUSIC FESTIVAL!
Our view from our table while eating lunch!
It is the first major event sanctioned by the town government since the start of the pandemic 14 months ago!
And people were out and about in golf carts – cars – trucks and just walking!
This was roped off and a charge to enter – you could rent out a canopy – and carry in drinks and food!
We did not go inside the ropes – instead after we ate – we walked around and around the whole roped off area as did many other people – they had chairs set up outside the ropes and golf carts – the police were there and ticketing anyone not parked legal.
I would say – inside – a thousand people – or more – I guess this is the fourth one they have had like this over the years – and the radio station was there and it also was broadcasting from the beach which was just as crowded!
Sherry entering the beach on main street!
We tried to walk the beach – but it was really crowed and full of young people – all right next to each other!
A look back toward sixth street where we usually go – and the other direction had even more people!
This area is pretty much not locked down – and you could tell the tourist season has begun!
I am happy for the the store owners who have suffered so much – many shut the doors and will not return.
But – we decided this was way too crowed for us – so we returned to the music and walked toward our condo.
Pausing once again outside the ropes to listen to a band – really good singing all the classics of summer of the 60’s and 70’s!
Thank you for reading Papa’s World – MY BLOG: livinglifedopingitmyway.blog
Once it was in the mid to high ’70’s and full sun –
Into the water they went!
Notice how protective Cassidy is of her little brother!
They fight and argue – but no one touches him according to her!
These two should have been the twins
they act and sound just alike.
She is so kind – loving and thoughtful.
Cassidy and Bode – two peas in a pod!
Taylor – or “TATTER TOT” as her cousin Ella calls her!
She on the other hand loves her alone time away from the other two! LOL!
She rides horses – and whenever around her MorMor – holds her hand.
She is the serious – studious one who quotes facts!
“AS AMATTER OF FACT” she says and then goes on to tell you!
BODE – after FIVE GRAND DAUGHTERS – he is the only boy and all boy!
Only six years old – and will be tall like Taylor!
Bode – cars – trucks – bikes – playing Army – running – riding – scraps – bruises – scabs – star wars – monsters – independent – never wearing shoes or socks and shirtless in the cold!
It was a very warm day in the sun – water to me was very cold – but they loved it!
Taylor is goin to be really tall like her MorMor – I think close to six foot!
They played and played in the water – coming out to run up and tell us something and then back they went!
For us – it was sit and take it all in – the sun was warm which is what I like!
Cassidy – small but a spitfire! Always calling her MorMor as does Bode! Love you Papa she says!
Yes – the sun was warm – the sand was also – yet the water was cold – but to them – it was their day at the beach!
