Papa’s World – Walking 1 1/2 miles to the Kindred Spirit!

At the end of the street on Sunset Beach – SW end

Is a long walkway and a handicapped ramp to the beach.

This is the beginning of BIRD ISLAND and the end of residential SUNSET BEACH!

Other than the pier some 1/2 mile to the NE –

It is here that you can begin your walk to the KINDRED SPIRIT MAILBOX –

Almost a mile and one half down the beach.

There are no more houses –

Only large sand dunes and the other side is marsh –

And a sanctuary for wildlife,

This is known as “BIRD ISLAND”!

It is a quiet walk and in warm weather –

Wading in the surf helps to keep you cool off!

As you near the end of the one-and-one-half-mile walk –

A sort of gradual sand ramp marks the –

“KINDRED SPIRIT MAILBOX” location.

Two benches await you to sit and –

watch the surf –

and write in the journal.

The walk is easy as it is level –

Much more so than OIB!

Here you can see other walkers –

already at the mailbox.

This has been the location for over four decades –

When a “HIPPIE COUPLE” –

carried everything needed to install a mailbox-

And placed a journal and ink pen or pencil inside-

For folks to walk here –

And stand on top of the dune –

Glance out to sea or turn around –

and see over the marsh and causeway to –

Little River and Cherry Grove in NMB!

Walk to the top of the dune behind the “KINDRED SPIRIT MAILBOX” –

And you will find a large driftwood mass –

With a plaque on it dedicating this spot to those two individuals.

We have been here many times –

Stopped and wrote our thoughts in the journal-

Which is collected by volunteers –

And sent to the University Of S.C. –

To preserve as a way to keep all the writings for people to see.

Sherry is about to climb the sand ramp to the mailbox-

A lone individual looking for shells at the surf edge-

It is a quiet moment –

The old mailboxes have been replaced –

over the years-

But new generations make the peaceful walk down the beach.

Two hippies and a mailbox-

Left us something for generations to come –

“THE KINDRED SPIRIT MAILBOX”

Papa’s World – Walking the beach on a windy day!

We have a small group of walkers from CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY who like to walk!

Sometimes it is in the Community – other times on the beach or at the park.

We prefer SUNSET BEACH as it is more level and easier to walk on.

LOL – just some humor!!!!!!

SUNSET BEACH looking back at the pier from the Western beach – toward Bird Island.

One of these days we plan on walking the WEST END at the end of the street to the Kindred Spirit

Mailbox – about a 2 1/2 mile round trip walk!

We stay close to this area – sun, sand, surf, piers, and beaches!

This is the life we looked for and living it one day at a time and life to the plus!

PAPA’S WORLD – WALKING THE BEACH ON A WINDY DAY!

Papa’s World – Walking the beach looking for Turtle Crawls!

We volunteer to try and save baby Sea Turtles –

on OIB, N.C.!

This entails early morning WALKING –

like at 5:45 am.!

We must be on the beach that early –

and walk the East end of OIB –

to see if there were any Sea Turtle Crawls overnight!

If you find such a crawl –

you immediately call the person in charge of the response team –

Who will come to the spot and find where the nest is.

They will determine at that time if the nest is okay to be left there –

or in danger of being flooded with “KING TIDES”!

These are exceptionally high tides –

and destroy the nests.

Then – our job is to continue the walk –

and see if any more TURTLE CRAWLS

have happened!

Looking in front of us to the far East end of OIB!

The Sun is rising and we walk toward it!

On this particular morning –

The forecast was calling for rain – thunder and lightning!

This is the view behind us from the West and the storm was approaching.

Sherry took this picture of me –

walking the dune line while she was closer to the surf.

We walk a wide area –

picking up trash as well as looking for crawls.

The storm was on its way –

and we wanted to be off the beach before it was upon us!

It took nearly one hour to walk –

and we made it back in time with our bags of garbage!

Papa and Sherry near the end of their walk –

two bags of garbage –

while it is seldom Sea Turtles come in on this section of beach –

It has happened.

Cleaning up the beach –

and walking almost two miles –

That was our mission that day –

and YES –

we did beat the storm as it opened up just as I started the car –

and headed home!

Turning 75 years old for both of us –

this type of volunteer work keeps us active!

Papa’s World – BEACH LIFE IN OIB!

The family came to spend a week with us –

this is Tammy and the grandkids and Marcus is here.

They came in a day early –

and so did Debby- Mike and Sarah.

Ella and Maddy came a few days later –

and we spent the week in a rental on OIB!

BEACH LIFE – Marcus asked me how many times we come to the beach in a week!

Well – it depends on what we have to do during the week!

I really do not know how we found time to work! LOL

I mean in five minutes-

we can be at the bridge or causeway –

then in another five minutes,

we are standing in the sand.

It is just knowing that you can do this –

A lot of times we drive over to Sunset Beach on the mainland side –

Go to the little park with our chairs –

and sit in the shade-sun in the grass –

and watch the boats go up and down the ICW!

Not exciting but we like to do it!

Other times we will go to OIB-

park and walk – looking for shells –

I mostly do not go over knee-deep in the water.

And at this time of year,

it is really warm water.

We sign up to walk the beach for the Turtle Patrol –

We walk the East End which has no houses –

and look if a Turtle has crawled in to lay her eggs!

This is part of reporting so that a quick response team can come and verify the nest –

Move it if needed –

and prepare it so predators can not get to it!

It is all part of being part of the group to protect Sea Turtles.

I was once asked,

“WHY – these Turtles have been doing this for thousands of years – why do they need protection and all that stuff you do”?

My answer is this –

Go back in time 600 plus years –

there was no one here except the Native Americans –

and they saw the need to protect and respect Nature!

They were the guardians of all the land and species!

Today – the last census – 2022 – 333.3 MILLION PEOPLE live in the USA!

Take the last 600 years and add up all the people who died –

and you have 600 years-

of garbage – trash –

and the changing of the environment.

The Oceans are full of trash that will be here for thousands of years without going away.

On top of that are predators – fish – birds – dogs – cats – foxes – HUMANS!

The answer to the question as to “WHY”?

IS US!

We – humans – have contributed to Sea Turtles diminishing in population.

Now – we are taught as a group that through studies done by Universities across the country-

That for every 10,000 eggs that hatch –

only 6 (SIX) baby Turtles survive to become adults!

And there are several species that are on the extreme list of extermination!

Education is needed to explain that our World as we know it-

is going through changes –

More floods – more drying up of rivers – heat – storms of destruction –

I had another person tell me –

” I DON’T BELIEVE IN CLIMATE CHANGE – BUT SOMETHING IS HAPPENING”!

Just look around and see the BEACH erosion-

some will be going away.

Hurricanes are more prevalent today –

Flood areas are there that were not there when I was growing up.

So – do we go to the beach every day –

or four times a week – NO –

But – WE CAN if we want to –

being able to see them every day is why we moved here.

Being involved in The Protection Of Sea Turtles-

is our way of trying to do something to help the World.

BEACH LIFE is more than living near the Water – Sand and Fun –

It is watching out for Nature – picking up trash –

educating children to be GOOD GUARDIANS of NATURE –

After all –

WHO else is going to do it-

and answer the question as to “WHY”?

Digging holes in the beach?

Please fill them back in as BABY SEA TURTLES can not crawl out of them –

and they are dangerous at night walking and you can really hurt yourself if you trip over them!

PAPA’S WORLD – BEACH LIFE IN THE OIB!

Papa’s World – Life with us – in our senior years!

We have a walking group that meets every Monday and Friday at the park across the street. You walk at your own pace and usually do two complete loops – just over a mile each and then once around the track.

This in total would be 2.30 miles!

Then during the day, we will get in the rest of our 10,000 steps – my heart doctor has told me just to “MOVE”!

Growing up in the 50s-60s and 70s – the generations that wanted love and peace – still has a place in my heart today!

We have adopted a healthy choice lifestyle – I do not drink soda or milk anymore – or fast food!

We live just a few miles from the beach – often going there for our walks – sun – sand, and surf!

We try to golf once a week or every other week – usually with dear friends of 35 years.

Just being out in nature – and yes – we get STEPS in that way!

Our dear friends – golfing – having dinner together and making plans for fun trips!

Papa’s World – Walking OIB to see the sunrise!

The sun creeping above the horizon on Ocean Isle Beach – GOOD MORNING!

Our Monday morning walking group decided to walk the beach instead of the park – to see the sunrise!

In the middle we had our daughter Tammy and her son Bode along with us to walk – she also chose to run as did Bode!

Tammy along with Sherry and Bode walking and looking for shells – you can just see Bode as he is shell hunting!

Only eight years old – he got out of bed and came with us as we left the house at 6:15 am.

Standing before a beach castle someone made above the surf line – Bode – who also ran with his mother!

The sky turns orange over the water as the Sun rises!

Diane and Sherry walk toward the Groin as the sun peaks above the horizon.

The views are just beautiful!

A look back at the way we had come!

Notice the reflection on the White House!

Tammy and Bode looking for shells as the sun nears rising!

PAPA’S WORLD – WALKING OIB TO SEE THE SUNRISE!

Papa’s World – Walking Ocean Isle Beach – early March!

Sunny day – high 60’s – no breeze – workers working on the OIB water tower – not for me! LOL

We decided after Pickle-ball – to take a walk on the beach – hardly anyone there!

It was a nice warm walk in the sun.

Product of my life in the ’60s! LOL

The beach was empty – which surprised me because as we walked it got warmer!

OIB pier – a look out south to the ocean – the beaches here face south! Curveture of the coastline!

Walking we saw hardly anyone – but we got our steps in – love walking on the beach!

Ocean Isle Beach when it is warm and lots of folks there! A view from the pier!

Papa’s World – In Winter – walking Sunset Beach!

Winter here is a lot different than NVA or WNY! Here – I do bundle up for I just do not like being COLD!

However – if I am warm and not chilled – I like to walk and Sherry and I go to the beach – Sunset Beach or OIB to walk!

At this time of year – sometimes it is cloudy and gray – other times sunny with blue skies and white clouds.

On the gray days, the beach is almost deserted – only a lone person sitting in a chair by the pier.

However, we have each other and we both like to do this! The sound of the surf – the birds and an occasional walker!

For as far as you can – no one – just the expanse of the beach – surf and ocean!

There are people here – you drive by the houses – all decorated – cars in the driveways or underneath the houses.

Our “WHY” we moved here near the borders of N.C and S.C.

PAPA’S WORLD – SHERRY and PAPA!

Papa’s World – Papa and Sherry – a perfect day to walk Ocean Isle Beach!

Sunset the night before – going to be a cloudy day – not the sun beating down on you!
The following day – cloudy – then blue skies and white clouds – warm and breeze – a perfect day to walk the beach.
After the gray clouds moved on – we were on the surf line walking – the water was still warm.

Why we moved to the border of S.C and N.C.

Being only four miles away – we can pretty much come here when we want!

True and True!

A PERFECT DAY TO WALK OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NORTH CAROLINA

Papa’s World – Part two – golfing Brick Landing Golf Course!

Sherry hitting off the fairway with the sights and sounds of the marsh in the background!
View of my tee box – senior tees – ICW and pond in front!

The course is tight with water everywhere!

Be sure to bring balls!

Papa – selfie with the ICW and docks for boats along the fairway!
Sherry teeing off from the ladies’ tees – note how narrow everything is!

The course was very fun – we lost golf balls but found some also.

It was dry and needed rain – the balls just ran and ran into water!

After we both hit our tee shots – we ended up here by the 150-yard marker!

We actually used Sherry’s ball as it was about ten yards farther –

but we still had to go over another pond and to the green!

“You have to have BALLS to golf the BRICK” Landing Golf Course!

A beautiful day and we ended up on the beach – golfing – walking on the sand and surf.

Papa’s World – taking Bob – Pam to Sunset Beach, N.C.

Sunset Beach – noted as being one of the TOP TEN beaches in the country!

And – I can see why! This is 8 miles from our new house – Ocean Isle Beach is 4 miles.

They are as different as day and night!

Here – it is calm most of the time – with the wide level expansive beach.

Ocean Isle is not as level – and also the waves are larger.

Sunset is more residential while Ocean Isle is more commercial.

Both have piers and free parking and paid parking.

Sherry Pam Bob

Pam had surgery on her ankle a year ago – so she decided to not walk with us – we decided to walk to the North End!

Pam used the saltwater to soothe her ankle.
We began our walk to the North end of Sunset Beach – heading to Ocean Isle Beach.

Papa’s World – a cleansing with morning showers and then the Sun for a afternoon walk on the beach

A look outside from our porch – I heard the rain – a drizzle – cleaning everything in the early morning!
A look to the West as the sky is clearing – the next phase to be built is at the end of this street.
A look once again toward the East and the Ocean as the storm clouds continue to move.

It was a nice rain – lasting maybe a hour.

Enough so everything looked fresh and clean and it was a warm rain – 75 degrees at day break!

Then the Sun came out from behind the clouds!

We had the afternoon sunshine and warming up to 82 degrees!

The water has remained warm also at the ocean.

Making it a perfect way to walk the surf and beach!

Sherry stopping to take a picture of a large fishing boat just off Ocean Isle Beach – a ten minute drive for us to reach.
Ocean Isle Beach

Now that we are settled in and almost all of the repairs we listed have been completed

we are trying each day to go to the beach to walk!

It is so relaxing – and there are still people renting homes here!

We at the time I write this – almost one third of the way through October!

And it has been really beautiful weather –

low 70’s at night – 82 to 84 degrees and sunshine in the daytime!

MY SITE: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog my contact email: fitztdf@aol.com PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – relaxing and walking the beach – we have seemed to like one better than the other!

Although Ocean Isle Beach is a ten minute drive – we seem to be going to Sunset Beach more often!

This beach is a extra ten minute drive – 8 miles away.

The difference is one is commercial and the other residential.

One is not flat and the other is.

One is more calm than the other.

Both have piers – both have plenty of parking – at least we have had no problems.

The pier at Sunset Beach – a lot of people sit under it to get out of the sun.

And you can see how calm the water is here and the beach wide and flat at low tide.

You can wade out and only be waist high!

Ocean Isle Beach has bigger waves and the beach is up and down.

There is where the mini golf is – the community park with concerts.

Bars and grills and a community center on the beach with bathrooms.

Sunset beach is almost all beach houses and rentals – hardly any big buildings!

We do go to both – Ocean Isle Beach has a big Farmers market a block from the beach.

Sunset Beach has their market on the mainland side as well as their concerts are mainland.

I like the drive to Ocean Isle Beach better – easier to get to.

Ocean Isle has little shops – and easy to walk around.

Many side streets and channels with houses.

Sunset Beach has a marsh on the South end and is where the Kindred Spirit mailbox is.

With low tide – the beach is really wide.
