Papa’s World – Past times with family!

My mother Mary’s parents.

Nora and David.

My middle name is David-

He passed before I was born, but my grandma lived with us as I was growing up!

They had ELEVEN children!

During the depression –

He would take and feed the neighbors from his farm!

Family from the past.

TRUE!!!!

The three youngest grandkids came to visit when we lived in a condo in Ocean Keyes –

In North Myrtle Beach!

Creating so many fond memories from the past!

On our wedding day –

June 25th. 1982!

WOW – THAT WENT FAST!!!!!

Papa – with our friends Cindy and Buck –

In Northern California.

They were our neighbors back in Portville, N.Y.

We now live some 38 miles from them in N.C.

We are still friends after all these years-

And have traveled the world on vacations with them!

A VERY GOOD THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

In July of 2024 –

Our family helped us celebrate our turning 75 years old!

Here – we are at OIB on the sand by the beach.

Over twenty years ago –

We started to search for something that would help us age healthily into our senior years!

Over the years, “CHRISTMAS” celebrations with family!

When we lived in Brambleton-

It was a drive to the Metro some miles away –

And take the family into D.C –

To the White House lawn and the nation’s Christmas tree!

Here is Sherry on one of those trips!

We have spent many holidays in DC.

Always forming memories –

We keep them in our minds and souls!

We have spent many Christmases in Lake Holiday with the older grandkids and their parents!

Forming memories for years to come.

When family visits –

And going to a Christmas show at Barefoot Landing.

You can see the mild winter conditions of winter in December!

And of course, there is MARLEY –

The family granddog!

Such a gentle dog!

And then –

It is “CHRISTMAS IN A BARN” with the older grandkids and their parents!

And game days for football-

Celebrating with friends.

Today – she has graduated from college-

A degree in Environmental Science-

Working for a large Environmental nationwide firm.

She has her own apartment –

But I still remember the little girl –

On her tricycle – with her “PIGGY” in the basket.

Maddy has grown up –

But this little girl will remain with me for the rest of my life!

A little humor to start your day!

Now if it were craft BEER –

I would be into it! LOL

When we moved South in 2020 –

During the COVID-19 pandemic-

We stayed in North Myrtle Beach at Ocean Keyes-

The beach was a half-mile walk from our condo!

We loved it here, but could not find a place to live that met our lifestyle!

NINE MONTHS was the period of time we lived here.

Fantastic memories,

And we still travel the sixteen miles back to visit!

CHERISHED MEMORIES!

My oldest son, Troy.

He still lives back where he grew up in Pa.

Looking forward to his next visit!

The Covid Pandemic – It still amazes me that some people did not take this seriously-

And refused to wear masks!

All around us, people were really sick.

Here we had to stock up on groceries –

It became just a habit and was no big deal!

Although I went months without a haircut-

Reminded me of my days way back in the 70s –

Riding my motorcycle with long hair! LOL

The date – June 25th. 1982-

Our wedding day.

My oh my-

The time has gone by so fast.

Kids are all grown up, and grandchildren have graduated from college!

Hard to believe that great-grandchildren are possible in the future!

It has been a long ride, and I have enjoyed every moment of it!

The innocence before they get older.

Love this time of life!

At my age – it could be me! LOL!!!!

It never gets old with old friends.

BOB and PAM!

Bob and I went to grade school and High School together.

Now they will be nearby for a year –

Testing out the area.

They have been RVING the past six plus years!

Friends are priceless!

In July 2024 – Sherry and I –

Celebrated our 75th. birthdays with family on OIB!

Back in the early 2000s –

We decided to search for and find a supplement with nutrients –

Papa’s World – Past years and memories!

Taylor – our granddaughter –

And their puppy, Marley, some years ago!

She has a way with animals.

She has ridden horses since she was about four years old.

Today, she has trained Marley to do so many commands-

Marley is big now –

And Taylor is still riding horses and training Marley!

My Alma Mater, where I graduated from High School!

OTTO-ELDRED in Duke Center, Pa.

We were bused some 8 miles to school.

I attended seventh through twelfth grade here!

Many memories and friendships.

I still am in contact with classmates from that year!

While I have not been back there in years-

My memories have not faded!

GOOD ADVICE!

For the past twenty years –

We have attended a Health and Nutrition for Juice Plus.

A big part of our life is pursuing health into our senior years!

Now, we are seniors!

Have been for quite some time!

Our senior years changed back in the start of the Pandemic.

That is when the 401K dropped like a lead weight –

Wiping out almost 1/3 of our retirement.

But – at the same time, for some reason-

The housing market took a leap-

And we decided to sell and take the profits!

Above – our “RETIREMENT HOME FOR LIFE”!

We lived here for 14 1/2 years.

We built this house – and were happy here!

Many memories of family and friends were here for all those years.

It was large – two stories and 3100 sf.

A corner lot, and we were one of the first ones to move here.

And it grew and grew!

There was one High School, and when we sold and moved away –

The fourth High School opened.

They had built a complete community –

Along with stores, banks, a library, restaurants, a gas station, and a grocery store.

Everything you would need to not venture out to the hustle and bustle of NVA!

The Metro was just a few miles away, as was the Dulles Airport.

We were happy here – but the costs kept rising!

NVA is very expensive to live in.

So when the market fell –

We decided to go South!

We found a condo in North Myrtle Beach at Ocean Keyes.

It was fourth floor with two elevators!

This was our view at night over the lake and fountains, and lights from the houses.

It was a half-mile walk to Main Street and the beach.

Sunrise from the lanai, which went across the complete front of our condo.

There were swans and Geese on our walks beside the lake on our way to the beach!

Sherry was near the end of the half-mile walk to the beach!

What would become a ritual walk every morning.

Our time here lasted nine months, after which we moved into our new home that was built in –

Cameron Woods Community-

Some sixteen miles to the North in N.C.

This is our new home, as it was when we moved in!

Today, all the landscaping is complete.

We still travel back and forth to North Myrtle Beach.

Tons of shopping – good food and entertainment are within thirty minutes of where we live.

We are aging well into our SENIOR YEARS!

In July of 2024 –

We celebrated our 75th. birthdays with family.

As seniors, now is the time to do the things we want to do!

For me I would much rather drive someplace than fly!

It seems the last few times that I did fly-

I caught a sickness that laid me up for over a week!

And then my fear of heights and flying!

At this stage in our life-

Shorter trips – more time at the destination.

Taking breaks and relaxing.

I guess that is what being a SENIOR is! LOL

But – I have to say – over these many years – we did do the things we wanted to do!!!

LOL- But we still remain as active as we can!

Walking to places as much as we can.

Golfing when we can.

No more running – but then I never did much of that!

Playing sports was more my thing.

Now watching sports is my thing!!

Love my morning of a single cup of COFFEE!

It’s been a ritual of mine for years.

Other than that –

My choice of liquid is water!

I have cut back on beer- I never did like hard stuff or wine!

Unsweetened iced tea is my change-up.

Relaxing on the sand!

Has always been my dream.

I remember when we would go a vacation near a beach-

Counting down the days until we had to leave.

Wishing we could stay.

Now – being so close –

We are the ones who stay and watch those on vacation leave to go home!

Being in our senior years –

We are living our dreams!

Papa’s World – Through the years!

Our time here is limited!

We are now well into our SENIOR YEARS!

Yet, through the years we have lived our lives to the plus!

Family – friends and now new neighbors for the SIXTH TIME!

Today as SENIORS –

We volunteer!

We do not drink as much –

In fact, very little at all.

That part of our lives is past tense for the most part.

Neither of us smokes – does drugs –

We enjoy the company of friends!

Laughing – exploring and playing games.

Two of my closest friends for decades-

Buck and Jim.

The former – we were long-time neighbors back in WNY!

The latter – we grew up in the same little town in NWPA!

Jim and I played softball together and later golf.

Buck and I and our wives have traveled the World exploring!

Here is Shawn with his wife Trisha and my eldest son Troy!

They still live in the general area where they grew up in the NWPA!

While we live far away –

They have visited us numerous times!

Family is important to us!

Here is Sherry with Bode, Cassidy, and Taylor!

The young ones were the hardest to leave, as the oldest were either in college or senior high school.

But all have been to see us and we to see them.

Now the last of the oldest is in college, and the other two graduated from college!

Our life now revolves around Sun, Sand, and Surf.

It has always been our dream.

But – it was the Pandemic that pushed us out of our dream retirement home in Brambleton, Va.

401K dropped, and the housing market went up!

Today, we are here in N.C.

It is hard to envision that we became involved with the health and nutrition community-

CHOLESTROL – 99!

TRIGLYCERIDES – 57!

LDL- 54!

HDL- 32! ( need more exercise!)

VLDL- 13!

I AM DIABETIC – years of sweets and food I should not have eaten!

AIC- 6.7 ! I have to get it below 6.4!

GLUCOSE- 110 – I HAVE TO GET IT BELOW 100!

THYROID- 1.930 NORMAL!

TWENTY PLUS YEARS AGO –

We embarked on a journey to age as healthily as we possibly could into our SENIOR YEARS-

I firmly believe with the help of the above –

We have accomplished that.

We continue on a path that has not always been perfect-

But better than it would have been!

Papa’s World – A look at early years to now!

Way before I was born –

The roaring twenties of my hometown –

ELDRED, PA.

Here is Main Street –

Some of these buildings were still there when I was young.

Some had new store Fronts while others looked as these do.

It has always, I think, had that small-town feel.

I believe this might be even earlier.

Perhaps sometime in the 1800s?

This looks to be late 30s?

Or even 40s?

I recognize many of these stores!

Many of these men I knew growing up.

My best friend Bob – his father is lower right side.

I would assume this to be late 40s to mid 50s?

This was in the 1880s –

Our little town experienced yearly spring floods –

Into the summertime.

The Alleghany River ran in the upper center right of this picture.

Heavy rains and snowmelt seemed to always cause flooding.

The Eldred grade and high school!

First grade through twelfth grade.

I went to my first four years here-

And we combined school districts –

With Eldred- Duke Center and Rixford.

A new elementary school was built right across the street from the ball field.

I went to fifth and sixth grade and then was bused 7 or 8 miles to –

The Otto-Eldred High School in the seventh grade.

The old school – built sometime in the 1800s-

I knew many of these guys growing up.

A supervisor for the South Penn Oil Company.

On the school board, when uniting the three school districts along with the township.

The Eldred team won the championship!

The Eldred fire department, as I knew it growing up,

I lived just up the street on the opposite side.

There was and still is –

A ten o’clock curfew –

The siren would sound every night, and you had to be home and off the streets!

My Junior year of H.S.

I am second row –

Number 65.

My senior year – I was in a car accident-

And spent 51 days in the hospital.

Not knowing if I would ever walk again.

My older sister, Donna, and her husband, Bill.

She worked for the town.

Bill was the Police chief when I was growing up!

And later became Mayor.

Today, this little town of Eldred, Pa.

It is home to a huge WWII museum.

All in this picture is the building.

Many tour buses make a stop here.

They come from all over the country to see the exhibits!

It is a marvel and a bucket list to see!

I have a lot to smile about!

Growing up here –

I would not trade.

This was home to me for 30 years.

After the Pandemic and the 401K collapse –

We decided to sell our “Forever Home” in Brambleton, VA. –

And go to a warmer climate!

We stayed for nine months in Ocean Keyes, NMB- S.C.

During those nine months, we visited many homes for sale.

Anything in our price range involved updating and months of work.

By chance, seeing a billboard –

We visited a new Community site under construction.

We found where we wanted to live and decided to BUILD our next home.

The total cost was equivalent to what we would spend on purchasing one to update.

The plus side was that we would have everything new and be where we wanted to be.

1900 plus square Feet –

Plus an enclosed screened-in lanai!

Our wish list was met by upgrading almost everything we could!

The beaches –

10 to 13 minutes away for both of them.

Gas station – Post Office-

Two miles away.

Shopping – 12 minutes in either direction-

And big box stores – 8 to 16 miles away.

Entertainment – thirty minutes away, sometimes closer.

Numerous friends live nearby.

This is a big part of our “DREAM” life!

The island of Ocean Isle Beach!

If you look at the picture –

On the mainland side –

Upper left center is two clearings in the forest.

We live close to the clearing to the left!

For us to get to the causeway bridge-

Is about four miles.

But that is not how the crow flies-

But the way the road goes.

If you could fly –

Then it would be about two miles!

Also on the mainland side –

Just before you enter the causeway bridge-

Upper right is a straight, cleared space running to the right.

This is the OIB airport-

Small planes –

I guess mostly used by wealthy owners who also store cars there for when they fly in!

On the center right –

Is the splash park – rides and area for children to play.

The open field and the amphitheater-

Is for summertime open-air free concerts!

This is for locals and weekly renters!

Oftentimes, this is also for events with music and vendors in the off-season.

And then a couple of miles Southwest is Sunset Beach.

That also has its own facilities that we enjoy!

The splash pad and tennis, basketball, and pickleball courts-

Covered pavilions for picnics.

This is all free to the public.

Restrooms are also here and are the town’s center for activities!

This is the stage for the Friday night free open-air concerts!

This was early, and it fills completely up by concert time.

This park sits right across from the mini-golf and our local hangout-

PELICANS PERCH and a new bar and restaurant –

THE SAND DOLLAR!

There are donuts, slushes, ice cream, and açai bowls to be had!

Shopping for beach items, and the pier is right across the street!

Cameron Woods Community near Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

From entertainment to big box shopping.

Gas – groceries are but minutes from the house.

If we want city life, Wilmington is 45 minutes away.

And the airports in both directions are less than 60 minutes away.

We started our journey to try to age as healthy as we can in our senior years!

That was over twenty plus years ago.

We made choices and stayed with it – I GAVE UP MILK!

I ALSO GAVE UP SODA’S!

I drink mostly water – Complete Shakes by Juice Plus.

I have a occasional beer – that may run weeks in between.

I do not drink wine or hard stuff.

I have a cup of coffee every morning.

And sometimes tea.

I try to cut way back on sweets and ice cream.

I added more veggies – I actually like veggies.

I tend to eat chicken or fish.

I have reduced my weight from what I graduated at in 1967- by 5 lbs.

I walk when I can.

We volunteer.

We travel back to family.

We chose a warmer climate as it does not have the same effect as the cold on us,

We enjoy golfing – together or with friends.

We go to the beach to walk –

We also go to North Myrtle Beach to walk at Barefoot Landing.

We were married on 6-25-1982 –

Second marriage for the both of us.

We have lived in four states.

This is a picture back in 1889 –

Of the little town I grew up in

Eldred, Pa.

I lived here until I was about 30 years old.

After I graduated from H.S.-

I rented an apartment in the brick building with four windows across –

With the canopy and something on the front sidewalk.

At the time I was there, it was the Western Auto.

Flooding was a natural occurrence –

Some years are worse than others.

We had the flood of ’72 –

and 12 to 15 feet of water on Main Street.

The reason was that the Alleghany River ran just below the tracks.

Growing up –

A lot of these buildings were still there.

Many memories from when I grew up in this little town in NWPA!

A good thought for today!

A little humor for today!

This is the park at Sunset Beach before you cross over the causeway bridge!

Here, we take our chairs and find shade under a tree!

It is calming as you watch-

All the boats come and go on the ICW!

This is also the park with a covered gazebo-stage where live music on Wednesday evenings occurs.

Also, once a week is a vendor day where dozens of vendors –

Show their wares to buy.

It takes us 10 to 12 minutes to get her from our house.

Sherry won a day on the water with a pontoon boat at a raffle.

Our friends ( Decades and Decades) came and shared this day.

We had the pontoon for over six hours.

Have you ever heard a song and it brought forth memories from the past?

Growing up in the 50s and 60s-

Many of those songs bring back memories for me.

Now in our retirement and senior years –

That dream has come true!

We will enjoy it as long as we are able!

The little Lutheran Church in Portville, N.Y..

Where we were married all those years ago –

On 6-25-1982.

Many memories are there –

We transferred to NVA in 1999.

We found a church there and left it in 2020.

We are now at another church, located close to our home in Cameron Woods Community.

IT WILL NOW CREATE MEMORIES ONCE AGAIN IN OUR SENIOR YEARS!

In 2021, the construction of our new home in Cameron Woods Community- OIB!

Here you see them testing the irrigation system.

We were able to close and start moving in on July 2, 2021.

Today it is all landscaped –

And we are happy to have selected this to be our retirement home in the South!

Some humor during the pandemic.

This was when we moved to NMB-

It was a ghost town-

Before that, for months, we wore masks.

We walked in public each day with hardly anyone around.

It was a time we shall always remember.

To make the most of it –

We walked alone but still enjoyed the new surroundings!

AAAAHHHHH – The life of a senior on retirement.

All those years of being somewhere for work-

I do not miss it!

I miss the people and have cherished memories of working –

For the same company for 47 1/2 years!

LOL- Being careful goes along with the GROANING!

But seeing Sunrises and Sunsets each day-

Being together and married for 43-plus years.

THANKFUL for the time we have together and the times we have spent in the past.

Not bad for old senior players –

First place in her age group – 60 to 64!

Back on the rear landing in our house in Brambleton-

We had two of the four Towers-

We owned.

I put this landing in, and it was perfect for the Sun.

Until 1PM.-

It was in the Sun.

We also had one in the enclosed patio and one in the garage with grow lights.

That gave us all year-round-

Fresh home-grown veggies!

I would dismantle three outside units and use only the one in the garage –

With the grow lights!

These two we sold with the house when we moved.

We moved the one in the garage with us,

And it has been year-round outside on our back patio!

Every six months,

we take it apart and clean it.

It is calming to know what you eat and no pesticides.

Pandemic-2020-COVID-no-one- to cut my hair!

My hair is naturally curly –

Everything, as far as haircuts, had closed up during the early Pandemic.

OCEAN ISLE BEACH CAUSEWAY!

This is the “WHY” we choose to live near here!

It has everything we ever wanted.

If you look toward the upper middle left-

There is a large community there.

Then straight back through the woods –

Toward the left –

It is an area of cut wood.

That is almost where our home is!

It takes us a little over ten minutes to get to the Causeway Bridge!

Across from the miniature golf in the lower right picture-

Is the park – splash pad and open-air concert area!

To the right of the miniature golf course is Pelican Perch –

One of our favorite local bars and restaurants!

The parking lot at the bottom –

This is where we have a season pass to park, and this is the OIB Pier!

On the left middle is the blue roof of the church, and where in the back by the marsh-

I have taken many pictures of family and friends at the sunsets!

Jinks Creek is just to the right of that, and fine dining with sunsets!

The cluster of buildings just across the street to the left of the park-

Offering bars and restaurants- ice cream, slushes, and commercial sales.

There are now two other places to grab doughnuts and Accia bowls.

In the upper middle, a boat marina,

And a gas station,

And three restaurants that are local favorites.

Also, toward the right is the start of “CANAL SIDE HOMES”!

And this is just the commercial part of OIB!

On the mainland side are more stores and places to eat – plus a small airport.

We chose this barrier island for its beauty-

Closeness and easy access for us.

A LOOK AT WHAT IS NOW BECOMING OUR LIFE MEMORIES!

We volunteer our time and effort to many things that are important to us!

Living life to the plus – one day at a time.

What we love to do and have the ability to do every day-

Walk the surf on the sandy beach of OIB!

I very seldom have mine out – only when I am alone

By myself with no one around!

In fact – I have been known to forget it

and leave it home!

I study people as they are doing whatever they are doing

I have never done crossfit in my life!

I have no idea what it consists of.

I really am not a exercise guy

But I do walk

when it is not freezing outside!

I got o bed early

and I get up early

so if you call or text me on the phone

that I really do not use

I will not see it until 5 am.the next morning!

Papas World – social media a bit of kindness – morals

Today I write this with sadness – but still moral in my beliefs.

Friends of youth – but oh how they have changed.

In today’s culture – social media has become a way

to “Stay in touch” but also a two edged sword.

Sometimes it requires to cut that tie –

all be it difficult – as you also cut the memory of the past.

Posting on social media has its rewards

and also its downfalls.

Trying to remain neutral sometimes is really difficult.

But – integrity – morals – truth – and doing the right thing –

Family – church – God and country –

Giving not taking –

loving not hating

When you cut ties from your youth

know that every day the Sun still rises

I am sad –

but I have no regrets

Social media can be rewarding –

and in this case where I had to cut those ties

Friends stepped up –

Social media also gives you that.

We believe in justice – morals – integrity – church – family -country – God

In our case – the joy in social media returns

with out the negative distractions of those who try to instill their views.

Gone but always remembered!

My brother-in-law Bill.

A veteran of the Korean War –

He married my sister Donna, whom you see here.

She was 15 years older than I.

Bill played first base for my father on the town team in Eldred.

I remember going with my dad-

To the games when he managed the team.

Bill would go on to be the Police Chief for our town and later the Mayor.

One time, he was near Boston at a truck stop –

He was approached by a man –

And crew members for a radio station.

It turned out to be Larry King –

And as a long-haul truck driver –

He also told them he was the Chief of Police for our town.

Bill had a recording of that interview, which he played for me one time.

My sister helped raise me when I was born, as both my mother and father worked.

Along with my mother’s mother, who lived with us.

They lived in Eldred all their married lives.

I have so many memories of both of them.

I was struck by how simple yet so fresh this was from a small child.

To me, this has the look of a “HALLMARK CARD”!

I shall always think of Cassidy when I look at it!

On our last NATURE WALK with the oldest granddaughters-

Before we left to move to NC!

Our granddaughter Sarah wanted a Halloween-themed birthday party for her sixteenth birthday.

We traveled back to Lake Holiday in NVA-

Where she lived and between her parents and us –

We pulled it off!

This was just the front of the house!

The backyard and inside were all decorated.

Her sweet 16 wish came true for her birthday!

They both competed in the Spartan Race for several years.

My dream has always been sand, sun, and surf!

When we went on vacation to the beach –

I always counted the days left!

Knowing that the following week I would be back on home turf-

Away from the Ocean –

The feel of the water while walking on my feet.

You look forward all year to that week all of you are together.

Then it comes and goes so quickly.

Now, I go to the beach with my chair and shade!

We walk and see all the folks on vacation!

But – our lives are now that we will be back again –

Day after day and week after week.

This is now our vacation for the year and many years to come.

I think I really could write a book on my life-

But most likely no one would read it except me! LOL

They were so small when the doctor said it was time, 32 weeks, and he performed the procedure-

They both were less than two pounds –

THEY ARE JUICE PLUS BABIES!

And Taylor – on the right here –

Was the bigger of the two.

She actually was taking most of the nutrients in the womb-

And that is why the doctor said now is the time.

Cassidy is on the left in the picture.

Today, Taylor is almost 5’91/2 and Cassidy is 5’61/2 inches tall!

Cassidy is in Gymnastics competing-

And it is cheerleading.

Both can sing and dance.

Cassidy has given up the violin, and she was quite good at it.

Taylor has ridden horses since she was four years old.

She spends all her free time at the barn caring for them.

She still plays the violin – and is trying out for basketball.

She acts, sings, and dances in productions.

Now they are both 15 years old-

And next is their mother, Tammy!

Sherry’s Swedish genes were passed down to the granddaughters.

Less than two pounds at birth to a healthy teenager-

Several years ago –

We had a friend’s long weekend at Cindy and Buck’s.

We had rented a pontoon boat on OIB for the day.

Six of us had been neighbors on Pleasant Acres Drive in Portville, NY.

That would be Carol and Mike, Cindy and Buck, and Sherry and me.

Jim and Dottie lived a few miles away across the border in PA.

I knew them even before Sherry and I married.

We have all stayed in touch over the decades.

But – also given us many fond memories.

April and Brian –

Before we transferred from DAl-TILE ( former AOTC) in Olean, NY. –

We worked with Brian for a few years as he transferred from Lansdale.

We became friends and met his wife, April.

Now, they too are close to retirement –

And contacted us as they were staying near Barefoot Landing in SC.

We arranged to meet up and had dinner together, and showed them around.

The past meets the present –

AND CREATES MANY FOND MEMORIES!

LOL – my little humor for the day! But it might just be true!!!!

This is the WWII museum from my hometown of Eldred, PA.

Many blue tours stop and pass through the front doors.

For such a small town –

This museum offers a fantastic look back at WWII.

If ever you happen to be in this town –

Take time and see this marvel!

ANOTHER FOND MEMORY!

Maddy, while playing Travel Soccer in HS.

On her own, she traveled 65 miles each way to play soccer for Loudoun County.

More competition, and for two years, she prevailed.

Getting an offer to play soccer for the University of Lynchburg.

She played all four years –

Starting as a Sophomore – named third team all conference-

In her Junior year, she was named second team all-conference-

And in her senior year named team captain.

Two out of the four years she played –

They made it to the NCAA tournament.

One year, they won the conference championship.

THIS IS ONE OF THE FOND MEMORIES WE HAVE!

On our wedding day –

6-25-1982.

Combining two families –

Her two daughters and my two sons.

A start of decades of being together –

And now in OIB-

Living our dream of sun-sand, and ocean,

And golf!

LOL!

It does – but there is that one stroke of the ball that is excellent and brings me back!

Golf is a game of frustration –

Sometimes you are on for a couple of shots-

And then it all goes downhill- into the rough or water!

But – it’s rewarding for me to be out on the course.

Manicured fairways –

Finding very good lost balls-

And making that par or birdie.

Frustration – feeling good – it is all in the game of GOLF!

Here is Cindy and I-

Standing on an almost island green.

It had started to rain –

And we were standing by the tee box under the shade of pine trees.

Finally, I said OKAY-

I am going to tee off.

I do not use a tee on par threes-

And I swung and lifted the ball off the turf.

It flew across the water –

And landed and ran a couple of feet, and stopped.

From where we stood, it LOOKED like it was going in!

I was happy, and then Cindy stepped up to her tee and hit the ball.

Two weeks before playing in the women’s league-

SHE HAD A HOLE IN ONE RIGHT HERE!

The ball landed softly and started toward the cup.

OMG – it looked like it would go in!

But it stopped –

When we got over there and walked to the cup –

We found my ball was about two feet, and hers was maybe five inches!

The ball Sherry hit flew short and into the water

We were playing a three-person scramble,

And a birdie was had here!

As I said in the picture before this one,

It is that one shot that brings me back time and again!

PAST MEMORIES!

Our three-person scramble produced an even par round!

So, that my friends is why I still golf –

Being a senior and enjoying life on the course.

LOL – A LITTLE HUMOR FOR TODAY!

In 1967, I graduated from this high school.

It has not changed much since then –

And I can not remember the last time I walked inside those walls.

The “OFFICE” Bills Mafia for AOTC!

This was back during the Buffalo Bills’ four straight SUPER BOWLS!

Our Olean, NY. The area was “BILLS MAFIA” during that time!

Great memories of a bygone time.

American Olean Tile Co., which later became DAL-TILE!

MEMORIES FROM THE PAST!

We traveled to OAHU for a ten-day vacation and stayed at an AIRBNB!

The AIRBNB was located on the North Shore –

Not far from the SURFERS PIPELINE competitions.

We explored almost every mile of OAHU with our friends, the McBrides!

Here we are at a beach –

And down the mountainside –

Cindy and Sherry went snorkeling.

They had a wonderful time and had to sit down in the surf to put on their “FINS”!

Someday, I would like to go back and explore the other islands!

MEMORIES FROM THE PAST!

We transferred from WNY – Olean area –

Farmland – harsh winters –

To NVA and outside of Washington, DC.

Just behind the Dulles airport.

For twenty years, we hosted family and friends.

Sherry was the official tour guide to all those folks.

Countless times, we either drove into the city or rode the Metro.

We would get off and back on at numerous stops.

Once, we took the oldest granddaughter’s –

And got off at Arlington Cemetery.

Taking the bus to the top –

The tomb of the unknown soldier-

And walking back down the hill to the 14th Street bridge.

Across the bridge to the Lincoln Memorial and onto the National Mall.

Those two granddaughters now have a memory of WALKING DC.

Bode – the only grandson among five granddaughters!

It is hard when on vacation and there are all girls!

He loves sports –

Knows professional soccer, hockey, and football, and is a good athlete.

He golfs, plays flag football – did play soccer, but now chooses field hockey.

He ice skates –

and attends sports games with his father.

Maddy was four or five.

Today, she is a college graduate.

Today, she is an Environmental scientist-

Working for a national Environmental firm.

She has moved on to her career and now lives in VA..

Some two hours away from her parents.

From the little blond-haired blue-eyed boy –

He will be a grandson who loves his MORMOR – SHERRY- his MOTHERSMOTHER!

Papa’s World – Family – Friends and Memories!

Life is short- smile, laugh, and show kindness.

In 2020, after the Pandemic had been around for months and months-

We sold our house and moved into our two daughters’ houses.

Splitting time between the two.

The three youngest grandchildren are shown here with their mother, Tammy.

We helped out with the homeschooling as Bode went into first grade.

As we prepared for our own move in late September-

We were going to the NC and SC border region-

As a family, we went on a nature hike.

Into the Blue Ridge Mountains we hiked.

Bode was five – the twins, Taylor and Cassidy, were nine years old.

This was a special time for us –

We would move away from them for the first time since they were born.

A lot of emotion for everyone during this time.

Now we go back every couple of months, and they come down between times.

A GRATEFUL HEART THAT WE CAN STILL HAVE THESE BONDS!

Several times a week –

We travel the short distance to either beach.

They have instituted paid parking on both beaches –

May through October, sometime.

For the first time since we have been down here-

We purchased a parking pass from the pier in OIB.

Now – this is where we spend most of our time.

Before the paid parking, it was Sunset Beach –

Simply because it is easier for me to walk on –

Being a more level beach.

The rest of the year-

There is no paid parking except for times at the piers of both beaches.

And the paid parking is from 9am to 5pm.

This is our dream come true.

A DREAM COME TRUE FOR OUR LIFE IN OUR SENIOR YEARS!

LOL – humor makes for a good day ahead!

They hosted us when we went to the JP Conference in Phoenix-

Jo graduated from Otto-Eldred HS, as did I!

Paul graduated from Smethport HS, as did Sherry.

They spent time at our home in Brambleton,

And we took the Metro several days into the city!

We packed a lot into that time –

Seeing the whole city and walking almost all of it.

TOURING WASHINGTON, DC. WITH FRIENDS!

It is that time of year –

NFL football.

We have two teams that we follow.

Washington Commanders and Buffalo Bills.

Sherry leans more toward the Bills –

And I lean more toward the Commanders.

However, we watch both if we can when they play!

WATCHING THE BILLS AND COMMANDERS!

Edging closer to 80 in our senior years!

Here in 2024, we celebrate year number 75!

Steve – Cindy – Buck – Elaine and Sherry.

We all lived in Portville, NY.

We played volleyball with Elaine and Steve.

Today they came to visit us in our new home.

And of course, we had a scramble-

GALS VS. GUYS!

And as I remember, it was very close!

We have known Steve and Elaine for over four decades.

Our volleyball team was known as the BEACHCLUB-

A fitting name since now –

We live by two beaches.

Elane is the only one not retired, but soon will be.

These are some more memories from the past!

The 2020 PANDEMIC!

We survived.

A past memory we shall always remember!

That was the year we sold our forever home-

Moved into the kids’ for four months –

And then went to S.C –

To North Myrtle Beach in Ocean Keyes.

Here we stayed for nine months until our new home was built!

We were fortunate to have him stay with us!

He performed at our church –

We offered to host him and another world-class performer-

Radoslav Lorkovic – He performs in concerts all over the world.

Keyboards and accordions.

We sat at the breakfast table for hours –

Ronnie is telling his life story.

This was a pleasure and a memory from the past.

On the ferry to Fort Fisher –

The three youngest grandkids.

They came for a week’s visit –

We were there as they had children.

The tarp on the ground was as close as they could come to us!

Papa’s World – A look at the past!

Although we did not have a wooden screen door-

We had a porch where we could sit and watch the world go by on our main street house.

Our little town is called Eldred.

Had a main highway for a main street, and it went right by my front bedroom.

Often at night –

I would fall asleep with the window opened and one of those sliding screens in place.

The traffic would slow down after dark –

But it still was the main way to come-

From NYS to PA. and beyond.

My mother, after she was older –

And lost her second husband to heart problems-

My own father died of cancer when I was nineteen –

She would sit on that porch every day in good weather.

Folks would drive by and honk their horns –

And yell a “HELLO MARY” as they went by after rolling down their car windows!

That front porch –

I had countless times of sleeping out with friends –

I had an old Korean War sleeping bag that belonged to my brother-in-law Bill.

It was not warm and had no padding!

Pa., back there was cool in the evenings-

A dense fog would roll up and over the railroad tracks from the Alleghany River!

The grass was always wet in the mornings,

And the sleeping bag was damp with moisture.

We had and still do a 10 o’clock curfew –

All kids off the streets.

Part of sleeping out was raiding the many gardens all over town.

Eating apples from the trees.

Upon the hill, across the street from our house-

Was a hill covered in blueberries!

Summertimes – we would take broken down large cardboard boxes and slide down that hill!

That porch has held its secret for countless years of the conversations that were said there.

Now today –

A new front porch of our own.

A place I go to sit and wave or greet neighbors going by.

No screen door – no childhood memories here.

No curfew – no sleeping out at night.

Still, a bedroom for guests sits right there.

Now we have Deer alerts with motion detectors.

They go off when the deer approach the flowers.

They also go off if it is windy or if someone is walking by on the road in the dark. LOL

This front porch is what I wanted when we selected the model for our home.

I guess it might reflect back to my youth.

All those years ago –

And now today aging to our 80s.

Both were raised in small towns with COUNTRY all around.

For me, today is having that place where I am comfortable-

Waving and saying hello to those passing by.

FRONT PORCHES have a way of doing that to me.

Papa’s World – The past and now!

LOL- I have learned –

“It’s not for me to question WHY – but for me to DO or DIE!!!! LOL

Some humor to start the day!

This is our home to the left in Brambleton, VA. at sunrise.

We lived here for 14 1/2 years.

Thinking it would be the home we would stay in and retire to.

But – the PANDEMIC changed all of that.

The 401K went way down –

But at the same time,

The housing market exploded.

We decided to SELL!

And spend three or four months living with both daughters and their families!

Then, we wanted to move to a warmer climate,

And the NVA area was so expensive!

We ended up in Cameron Woods Community-

Ocean Isle Beach – North Carolina.

Today we have sunrises and Palm trees-

Warm weather –

Sunshine most of the time.

Two beaches are within ten to twenty minutes.

Around 30 golf courses within thirty minutes.

And the cost is substantially lower, as are the taxes.

We have room for families to visit.

We have found our place in the sun.

And this becomes THE PAST AND NOW!

Buck – Papa and Jimmy.

For over four decades –

Friends – buddies – golfing partners.

Vacations – trips and world traveling.

On the golf course –

GUYS vs GALS!

And the GALS are good.

Marley and Taylor.

Marley was a puppy in this picture.

Taylor has now taught her so many things.

She is so good with her.

Marly is so lovable.

She will snuggle with you.

She listens – thanks to Taylor.

Taylor today horse riding.

Four years later.

She loves horses and working in the stables and barn.

Today, the family and Marley.

She has become our “GRANDDOG”!

Thus giving us A PAST AND NOW!

They are twins –

Taylor and Cassidy –

Here I have them on my lap –

Showing them my computer and they are fascinated!

They were born early –

At 32 weeks, simply because Taylor was taking all the nutrition.

The doctor said it was time –

To have them out.

So, a “C” section and over one pound each, they survived!

They were Juice Plus babies –

Their mother had taken the supplement for years!

It just so happened it was on their mother’s birthday-

Today, all three celebrate the same day!

Today, they shine in this picture with their mother, Tammy.

Taylor is on the left, and Cassidy is on the right.

From 32 weeks to now-

Taylor is almost 5’9″ and Cassidy is 5’6″.

Taylor rides horses – plays the violin – sings and dances, and acts in plays.

Cassidy plays violin, cheerleading, and gymnastics.

She can also sing and dance,

And acts,

But chooses not to.

The tiny twins then sat on Papa’s lap.

And today, with their mother –

This is a THEN AND NOW moment and memory!

Sherry, Buck, Cindy, and Papa.

When we moved to Pleasant Acres Drive in Portville, N.Y. –

We became neighbors with Buck and Cindy.

This was around 1988 or so.

We had known them through Jim and Dottie –

Who were my longtime friends from Eldred, Pa.

We became fast friends and started traveling the world on vacations.

In the mid-90s-

They moved to Wilmington, N.C., for new jobs.

We stayed in touch and would go down and visit –

Then in 1999 –

Both of us transferred within Dal-Tile to NVA!

We still got together and went on vacations.

Our little group of three couples tried to get together every four months.

At each other’s houses, and Jim and Dottie had also moved to Virginia.

The years passed –

We retired and came to N.C., where we are now.

Some 38 miles from the McBrides and Jim and Dottie-

Now live in the Northern NC area.

Now, we meet up and play golf-

Have dinner and plan a trip locally in the state.

We still all get together every so often.

This is but one more memory of THEN AND NOW!

LOL- some humor for today!

Sherry and some team members from her JUICE PLUS BUSINESS!

For twenty-plus years, she has conducted her business online.

Providing a supplemental monthly income.

Allowing us to live our dream here in N.C. –

Cameron Woods Community-

Ocean Isle Beach.

She has been able to work from home and has retired from her job-

In 2012!

She works when she wants to and has her office in our new home.

Today, after 20-plus years –

A business and a way to age healthily, as we are now in our senior years.

I have not missed a day in all those years.

And now, they have come out with a liquid drink instead of capsules!

A little bit of humor to start the day!

But – in our case –

When the Pandemic hit –

The 401K plunged –

The value of our house more than made up for it.

So, we looked at the greener grass elsewhere-

And today, we are living our dream-

Warmer climate – golfing and sandy beaches close by.

Sometimes, it’s not a septic system.

MEMORIES LOOKING BACK!

I wanted a front porch in our new home-

Sherry wanted an enclosed office-

We both wanted room to sleep everyone.

We got what we wished for!

And today, when it permits –

I sit on our shaded front porch-

Either saying hello to neighbors walking or waving to neighbors driving by!

And – with the office –

We put a blow-up queen mattress!

And a couch in the sunroom that turns into a queen bed-

Plus, a love seat couch in our bedroom that turns into a single bed-

We have the room to accommodate all of them!

So we make MEMORIES LOOKING BACK!

Going to the beach in late afternoon –

Watching the clouds drift by.

Feeling the breeze on your face-

Hearing the sounds of the surf as it crashes on the sandy beach.

Here is our dream –

MAKING MEMORIES LOOKING BACK!

They were born pre-mature at just 32 weeks.

The doctor said it was time.

They were so small.

Taylor was taking all the nutrients and growing bigger,

So, on Tammy’s birthday –

Here they came.

Both under two pounds.

They thrived – and we had two blue-eyed, blond little girls.

Today they are fifteen years old.

Taylor rides horses, plays violin, and acts and sings.

Cassidy can also play violin, act, and sing –

But she chooses to do none of the above-

Instead, she is in Gymnastics –

Competing and Cheerleading in high school.

They are taking different courses in life-

But – when they talk out of sight –

It is hard to know who is who!

Life now will create –

MORE MAKING MEMORIES LOOKING BACK!

We are all one in humankind!

Papa’s World – Memories in past times.

On our rear patio in Brambleton, many years ago.

We had four Tower Gardens at one time.

This is an Aireponic growing system,

Which means only water, air, and minerals.

It is completely self-contained and requires only making sure the base has water and tonic.

Tonic is two parts, and you add a cup of each every so often.

There is an aquarium water pump in the base –

And it pumps the water straight up the middle to the top –

And it drizzles down and saturates the “HANGING ROOTS” –

Of the plants.

Air, water, and minerals feed the root system.

You can grow anything that does not come from a tree or is planted in the ground.

Not potatoes!

You can grow cucumbers, beans, peppers, and tomatoes!

Watermelon and eggplant – Squash, etc.

A whole garden in such a little space.

We sold three of them with the house and brought one with us –

And now for four years –

It has continuously produced on our back patio.

We eat fresh vegetables every day –

And the growing time is about one-third of the normal growth on the ground.

Papa’s World – Almost two holes in one!

Here it is – the ISLAND GREEN at Magnolia Greens golf course-

Leland, N.C.

And across the water – by the tall pines –

Is the TEE BOX!

We were four holes from being done –

Not counting this par three.

And we were playing a scramble threesome.

Cindy – Sherry and I-

Buck doesn’t play anymore except to putt sometimes!

The sun was out, but one lonely dark cloud was overhead, and the rest of the sky was blue!

We were all next to the pine trees because it started to rain –

Not hard but steady in the sunshine.

From behind the green –

Surrounded by water on three sides!

It is an intimidating hole –

When standing on the tee –

All I can see is water and a green hard to hold.

We stood for a while, hoping this one cloud would move on.

No one was behind us – it was late afternoon!

And the foursome in front was out of sight-

They had no rain!

Finally – I just said “OKAY- I AM GOING TO TEE OFF”!

My ball is the fastest one away.

From the tee box-

It looked like it was going to run in!

It rolled inches from the hole and beyond!

We were all excited because in the scramble –

It most likely is a birdie!

Cindy hit next-

If you look closely, you can see the raindrops!

And this one was even closer – it also went by the hole, just missing going in!

NOTE: Two weeks ago, she had a hole-in-one on this very par three!

Sherry hit next, but it almost went across the water, but did not make it!

My shot was about two and a half feet.

Cindy – maybe six inches on a good day!

Here we are – and a long time ago, I also had a hole-in-one at Saint Bonaventure number six.

We continued on, having a birdie.

I am proud to say –

We carded two bogies – two birdies and five pars –

For an even par round of 36!

I personally think Magnoila Greens is one of the best courses I have played.

We continued to enjoy golf in the South.

Papa’s World – Time in pictures!

Just outside of Mount Jewett, PA. –

Where Sherry grew up –

Is the Kinzua State Park Bridge!

Built in the 1800s –
It was at the time the highest railroad bridge in the country.

Stretching a mile across the Kinzua valley ( This was home to the Seneca Indian Tribe)

And over three hundred feet high-

It was a major route for coal from Erie to Pittsburgh.

Many times during her youth, she walked across this trestle.

Her father rode a snowmobile across it.

Then, it was only used as a tourist train that would bring folks across it.

I remember while on the golf course in Kane-

A train would come past with smoke bellowing from the smokestack and a whistle blowing!

Then, many years ago –

A tornado tore up the valley and took half the structure down.

Today, it has been refurbished on the half that still stands.

It sits today as a state park.

You can walk all the way out to the end,

And a structural glass floor allows you to gaze over 300 feet straight down!

I am the only member of our family who does not venture out there! LOL

In this picture are our friends,

The McBrides,

Who also grew up in the area just across the NYS border!

This is at the top of the structure but below the entranceway.

You can see straight through the bridge to the end where the viewing platform is!

Thus producing for the four of us –

TIME IN PICTURE!

A little smile for the day!

We lived in NVA – about twenty miles from Washington, DC.

Every year, we would take the Metro into the city –

During the ROLLING THUNDER –

To see the endless Sea of motorcycles.

This picture is but one of the many fields of parked bikes.

For almost seven years from 1974 until 1981-

I rode a motorcycle.

I never was in DC, but many times I rode to Wheeling, W.V.

I was a fan of the Grand Old Opera there!

I had an accident –

A new driver –

Just got her license –

I was behind her at a red light.

Up in Amherst, N.Y., on my way to Cedar Point in Ohio.

The light went green, and she started out as I did-

But she stalled the VW and never stepped on the brake.

The only thing I could do was lay the bike on its side.

I ended up almost under her bumper-

But that made me feel that it was only a matter of time-

So I sold it and never rode again.

You always had to watch the other person.

We loved going to see the motorcycles in D.C.

Thus, this creates –

TIME IN PICTURE!

The Jefferson Memorial is on the basin in D.C.

This is looking across to the memorial from the Martin Luther King Memorial.

At the time, it was being repaired.

Many times, we would just take the Metro or drive in.

D.C. is the only city where I do not feel closed in.

It has restrictions on how tall buildings can be.

It is also spread out with huge open spaces.

My favorite city to visit –

And walk around.

This is another TIME IN PICTURE!

Ella, Cassidy, Bode, Maddy, and Taylor.

This was Maddy’s senior year in high school, and Ella was a Sophomore!

For one year, they played together at James Wood High School.

They both went on to college and had successful soccer careers.

Both were named as captains for their teams.

The three younger cousins would go to their games and cheer them on.

Today, Cassidy is a cheerleader – a gymnast –

Taylor is a horse rider, plays the violin, and is trying out for basketball.

Bode plays soccer, flag football, and lacrosse!

FUN WITH A PICTURED MEMORY!

A little humor for today!

Papa and Sherry during the pandemic.

During this time and later-

We both caught COVID!

THREE TIMES!

But – we survived although very sick.

Being a SENIOR –

We try to protect ourselves as much as possible!

NOT A FUN TIME IN MEMORIES!

For TWENTY PLUS years –

We have been taking Juice Plus-

And running our home-based business.

Aging healthy and supporting our lifestyle monthly!

Sherry’s father, Bill, is a WWII veteran.

I learned a lot from him before he passed away in 2001.

A MEMORY OF A FUN TIME IN OUR LIVES!

Sherry’s mother ( Barb ) and father ( Bill ) taken about the time they were married.

Barb’s mother was born in Sweden –

And they lived in Mount Jewett, Pa.

A 1800s town founded and built by the Swedes.

A trip back in time –

Taylor- now 15 years old –

Sarah – now 19 years old –

And Cassidy, now 15 years old.

This picture was taken at the patio of our home in Brambleton, VA.

They were always playing dress up

Faries – Mermaids and many other characters.

I look back at this and wish we could all go back in time!

She reached for her MORMOR’s hand as they walked together across the parking lot-

At Community Lutheran Church in Staerling, VA.

Sherry ( MORMOR- Mother’sMother) and Taylor.

She has always been that way –

Reaching for my hand as we walk together.

I hope to never see this end

But as they get older, it may!

The only season they were on the pitch for soccer at the same time’

In High School.

They both went on to play soccer in college.

Maddy at the UNIVERSITY OF LYNCHBURG –

And Ella at RANDOLPH COLLEGE.

Here they played against each other for two years.

Both captains for their own teams!
