Papa’s World – A little golf with Bob and Pam!

Sherry – Papa – Pam and Bob!

We did manage while visiting them at a campground just outside the Villages-

To drive some minutes away and get in a round of golf!

This course is perhaps the most landscaped and beautiful course I have ever played on.

I forget the name – but they told us –

You just show up – no tee times.

And they start you when the tee opens up.

It is 18 holes – we only played the front nine.

Not long which suits my senior game just right.

Everywhere you look is fantastic landscaping.

Flowers – shrubs – huge rocks and mulch.

Fountains and lakes full of greenery.

And the rough is great!

The story I was told –

A landscaper decided to develop land he had –

And put in an 18-hole golf course –

No tee times –

Not too expensive –

And use his landscaping experience-

to turn it into –

A lush – shrub – flower-filled oasis

with tons of water and water features!

AND A ISLAND GREEN that I hit in the middle and it rolled off into a sand trap.

I was amazed after being told by Bob and Pam-

just how beautiful it was.

And we just showed up around 2pm.-

and checked in and got right on!

And it was affordable.

A nice pro shop and they served food!

A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS!

A rock formation and a waterfall!

Fairways and roughs looked professionally groomed!

The greens were awesome and fast!

Spanish moss hanging from the trees-

Small and large palm trees throughout the course

and this was just the front nine!

Pam is ready to tee off –

Note how well-groomed the other parts of the course are!

Sherry already hit and I am waiting!

Notice how groomed the tee box is!

All the shrubs that I saw were all trimmed throughout the course.

An extraordinary amount of labor to make it so perfect!

There did not seem to be any leaves – dead branches –

or clippings on the course anywhere.

This was by far the best-kept course I have ever played on!

I wish I could remember the name –

It is somewhere around the Villages and Summerfield.

Papa’s World – Remembering the past!

While we lived in the Washington, D.C. area –

we made many trips to the baseball park to watch the Nationals play and the World Series in 2019!

We always enjoyed these games but it did get hot sitting there – so much so that at times we would

get up and go back into the shade!

REMEMBERING THE PAST!

My two sons – Troy on the left and Shawn on the right –

far away but close to our hearts!

REMEMBERING THE PAST!

The Metro station was only a few miles from our home in Brambleton, Va.

This is a suburb of Ashburn and on the back side of the Dulles Airport.

Countless times we boarded the Metro for a day trip into D.C and began our walking – exploring.

Here is one of the many flowering gardens and trees in the late springtime-

in Washington, D.C.

REMEMBERING THE PAST!

When we moved we wanted to golf as it was costly to golf in NVA.

Here we live among 30 golf courses and our friends live 40 minutes away.

We often get together to play 18 and always is a fun time.

PAPA’S WORLD – REMEMBERING THE PAST!

Papa’s World – hiking with the grand kids – Veeren Memorial Park – S.C.

Cassidy Bode Papa Tammy

We had driven past this park dozens of times as we went to golf and also after we bought our lot!

Always saying – we need to stop and check it out –

might be a good place to bring the grand kids as they all

like to hike and explore!

Papa Cassidy Taylor and Bode

So – we did and then when they came down – we went for a hike –

out through the marsh – into the trees – a sand trail – pathway –

I had a map as it splits off several times!

I guess in the warmer months you will see gators in the marsh!

The little ones are always curious – exploring – seeing and asking questions!

But – they also stay close – ever watchful –

and tend to hang with MorMor!

Sherry – ( MorMor) Swede for Mother’s Mother – loves to lead and show them – explain what everything is!
They also listen to her!

Papa’s World – “KEEPER” of the PLANTS!

It has been three-plus years since we moved into our new home in Cameron Woods Community!

We now live less than eight miles from the border of N.C. and S.C. in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

In every home we have lived in – we have done our own plantings – except here – the TREES!

We have had three small palm trees and two Crepe Myrtles planted –

We have kept all the bushes that came with the house except for three.

All the landscaping small stones – edging and large border bricks we had installed.

The rest – with Sherry picking them out – I installed myself.

At 75 years old – my days of digging by hand for planting trees have ended!

But – I still am the one who daily maintains the bushes – eight rose bushes –

numerous flowering bushes that come back each year.

Since Sherry had her Compound Fracture of her LI Vertrabrea –

It has become my sole duty to water – and move the flowers in and off the front porch daily –

because we have some very hungry DEER!

They have munched the neighbor to little stubs of once glorious flowers and plants!

I have sprayed all the bushes and plants and parts of our Tower Garden

( YES THEY ATE THE LEAVES AND FLOWERS OF THE CUCUMBERS AND TOMATOES)

With deer and Rabbit repellent – and they ate them anyway.

So now – in the morning I move all the moveable pots off the covered front porch –

back onto the flower beds and at night move them back onto the porch –

Keep your fingers crossed that the Deer will not come onto the porch!

With the Tower Garden – we have a Winter covering – that looks like a shiny metal blanket –

that allows Sun and Rain through – I cover in the late afternoon and take off in the morning!

So far = at this writing – I write way ahead – this has worked.

Sherry has come up with the nick-name of “KEEPER OF THE PLANTS” for me.

Here is a picture of me after I had moved all the plants back to their spots before church-

on Father’s Day!

Usually, these pots are full of bright colors – but at this time they are green as the Deer ate all the colors of flowers!

We decided not to buy more new plants – they are expensive-

And to nurse them back with Miricle Grow which I have been doing – the Deep Green –

tells me they are healthy –

Now – time will tell – the whole neighborhood has been hit by this small herd of Deer.

They even jumped several fenced-in yards – munching the plants.

So – as the “KEEPER OF THE PLANTS” I shall continue my daily regime –

And keep my sanity of golfing and hitting that perfect shot that brings me back time after time!

Papa’s World – The BILTMORE GARDENS!

To think these magical gardens are over 100 years old – it takes your breath away!

Here is where thousands of trees – plants and flowers were carefully cultivated to bring life back to a land cleared for farming!

I can not imagine the cost of building this and maintaining it; it still functions today!

The arrangements and colors are breathtaking – the entire average surrounding the estate is a result of years of planting trees – shrubs, and plants that flower.

Cindy and Sherry are inside the greenhouse with thousands of plants.

It is stunning that this is still going on all these years.

If you visit – walk the walled-in gardens and visit the greenhouse – you will not be disappointed.

Papa’s World – Sunset in Cameron Woods with the SOLO STOVE.

Good day everyone – we have a Solo Stove firepit – on our back patio – and beautiful sunsets!

We are but four miles from the closest beach which is this one called Ocean Isle Beach – which faces South!

We did not want to be in a flood zone or next to the beach – so we are on the mainland side with the ICW between us and the beach!

We also are six miles from Sunset Beach – so named for its fantastic sunsets!

Sunset at SUNSET BEACH – which also faces south. We have the SALT LIFE!

Our children and grandchildren will have this in the future time – our gift to them.

Our Solo Stove – we use it at times to have a fire for friends and family – a way to gather and be social.

The SOLO STOVE FIRE PIT – is a great conversation piece. Plus this top – spreads the heat outwards!

Our backyard faces somewhat South-West and with a protected tree line.

Papa’s World – Cleaning up after Hurricane Ian.

While not major destruction, there were a lot of branches and some trees down.

We dodged a bullet – but it still was a force of a one when it hit , winds up to 70 mph.

It was more of a small problem but still needed cleaned up.
The beaches sustained some erosion.

It was scary watching the tree line and the trees bending side ways!

There were five of us who together blew off the yards and got rid of the branches and leaves.

It took us about five hours working together to clean uphe yards of five neighbors –

some of whom were not here!

All in all – our first experience with a hurricane –

deciding anything more than a two we will leave.

Sherry afterhe storm and all cleaned up!

Papa’s World – Sunset -Sunrise and the Tower Garden!

A look to the East at Sunset

From the end of our driveway – we can see both the Sunrise and the Sunset!

As the fall comes on and summer has ended – the Sun starts to move each day –

and in this picture – the sunrise is more to the right – in the fall it has moved to the left.

Turning around and facing the house – the Sunset in the West!

We came to view this lot at around 2:00 pm. on a sunny afternoon a year ago last October.

And we could see how the Sun would go across the lot

and knew we would have views of Sunrise and Sunset – we were hooked and the trees would remain.

Papa and Sherry – PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – Planted mums – arrange the patio and – fire in the Solo Stove fire pit.

This area is protected – conservation and wetland.

We selected this lot because of the wooded area and these woods will not be cleared out!

So – we have tried to go natural – planting Oleanders – and flowers that come back each year.

Bird feeder – and more plants to be added as we see how it goes.

The Solo Stove fire pit on the open patio.

We have been buying small bags of wood at various stores – plus picking up dead tree limbs.

Now – we tried burning pine combs – of which there is an abundance all around the community.

We generally start the fire in the early evening – still light out.

By 8:00 pm. we are done and I let it just burn out with the red coals.

Mums along with pine straw.

We have not seen anything in the woods other than a squirrel.

But I have been told to watch out for snakes!

We do have Copperheads in the area – and down the road, by the pond, we saw a large Black Snake!

I am ever watchful – always looking around – wild turkey and deer are also around.

To the right is the covered – enclosed Lanai – with the open patio in the center.

Our lawn is not large – normal size – and we did not want a large lawn to take care of!

Being we both are retired – and we sold all our lawn equipment – I have the lawn mowed every two weeks!

I have also had the landscaping done – and in the Spring will have fresh mulch!

The Solo Stove flames – a couple comfortable seats and a few beverages – an evening on the patio.

WELCOME TO MY WORLD – ( PAPA’S WORLD)

Papa’s World – I planted Crepe Myrtles – beautiful !

I guess it must of been 8 to 10 years ago –

We bought three Crepe Myrtles – about three feet tall –

I had to dig the holes on my knees with a garden scoop –

because of the large amount of ROCKS in the ground !

Good morning !

Yesterday as we walked back to the house –

I realized just how beautiful they are –

and the one out front was the last to bloom !

Sherry pointing at the red flowers

Our house sits on the corner – the other two are in the back –

and they always bloom first.

But this one on the corner – with the green in the background –

just catches your eye when you come up the street.

Positive thinking

We are truly blessed – as we really like where we live –

We talk about moving further South-

But we have been here for 13 years !

The front porch

Over those 13 years – I have planted everything – all the bushes –

The large trees I did not –

And 95 % comes back each year.

Tunnel of trees

We installed a irrigation system two years ago –

after years and years of me dragging hoses around –

It has been a lifesaver –

Most of the lawns are burnt up and brown –

with all the heat and Sun and no rain.

We made this our home

When we moved in – our house was the only one here –

Everything else was built later and we watched it all being done.

Today – they still have a couple more years of building.

They will open the third High School in September –

And our community has been named

as one of the top 25 in the country !

Front yard

Today we are retired –

Living near our grand kids –

But I still cherish my yard – trees – flowers and plants –

They have become a part of who I am –

Funny – but I enjoy seeing them grow and change !

The opposite view from the side

One day we will pack up and leave it all behind –

But – until that time comes –

I will always look as we are coming home –

seeing the green – reds and yellows –

knowing that we did that –

living my life one day at a time!

Two Crepe Myrtles in back
along with ever greens I planted

Papa’s World – before the pandemic – Sarasota Fla. Loved this city! Just too far away!

Papa and Sherry – hugging a tree in Sarasota , Florida – we had considered moving here – but it was just too far to drive for family and friends and for us to go back home without flying.

Then the Pandemic hit and it never came back into the discussion again.

But – I really liked it here and if we came to Florida – this would be my first choice!

I do not remember the name of the garden but it is city center – and a beautiful place to walk!
We were among huge old growth trees – a lot of shade and a sort of tree – boardwalk that wound its way

in and through the tree branches!

Papa’s World – find a seashell – write a name and date – and then make a wish!

There is a place – next to the ICW – in Vereen Memorial Park – where you find a shell – date it and your name – hang it from a tree – and then make a wish – hundreds of the hang and this one is from our Taylor!
At ten years old – she already is five foot tall – she will someday be taller I think than her MorMor( Sherry) who is 5′ 9″ must be the Swede coming through!
I am little – some day I will be bigger – so she says – but every day she either calls or texts her MorMor ( Sherry ) and that sweet little soft voice – “I love you MorMor ” here she hangs her wish!
Cassidy showing her shell for a wish! I think she looks just like Taylor in this picture!
Bode – hanging his seashell wish – the only boy out of six grand children!
I have said – Cassidy and Bode should of been the twins – they are two peas in a pod!
Bode Taylor Cassidy

They came to spend a long weekend with us –

seeing where we live and where we are building our new home!

They were so excited – and hiking was on our things to do!

We had told them there was a place to make a wish and hang the shells from a tree!

But first you must search for the right shell

then date it and put your name on it!

MorMor – leading Taylor – Cassidy and Bode on a search for their own perfect sea shell!

Papa’s World – A windy day walking the beach.

The calm before the wind!

We had gone through one day of winds

then another storm way off the coast

brought another windy day!

We headed out on our walk – nervous from the trees!

But we pushed on – walking the streets until we came to the beach.

Entrance to the beach – South of main street

The wind was stronger on the beach –

sometimes blowing the sand up and into your eyes.

This reminds me of desert sands

the wind dries out the sand

which is like powder here in SC.

Leaving footprinrs such as these after walking on it!

Did we make a error in coming to the beach?

The Ocean was rough – waves bigger than normal!

White caps from the shore outward.

A lonely man metal detecting

We were almost all alone!

There were a few brave souls

but the wind whipped up the sand

causing it to swirl across to the waters edge.

Almost no one on the beach and this was almost lunch time

We walked a short distance –

bracing against the wind

Even the birds were not there!

We are soul mates in the wind.

And then the calm at the end of the day – Full Moon – over the lake – our view from the Lanai

MY SITE: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – A wind storm – hunkering down!

It was very windy out – a storm had hit the gulf coast

and was working its way North only inland from where we were.

However – it was very windy

and here at Ocean Keyes – there are very large

old time growth of live Oaks and Pine trees!

The kind that soar way up into the sky!

This picture I took standing at the fourth floor landing

of the condo we are living in.

It still went high above me!

And the tree branches were swaying back and forth.

We went for a short walk and decided it was not safe enough!

Small pieces of branches were coming down.

Small but large enough to really hurt you

if they hit you!

Well – not this! LOL

But – we did go back inside to wait it out!

And we tracked the storm to see how long this would be this way!

We then went out onto the Lanai – which is all screened in.

The wind seemed to be more at the front of the condo

and although we could see it come across the small lake

we were comfortable sitting on the Lanai!

So – we had lunch and broke out the new game we bought

called Rummikub!

And ended up sitting out there for a couple hours

while the storm passed us by!

( SHE WON)

We have begun our new life

living life one day at a time.
