Papa’s World – Life at Fountain Side Lane.

In June of 1999 –

Sherry and I transferred within the company –

To Northern Va. – to the Alexandria section –

just outside Washington, D.C.

We had two months of company-paid living –

in a block of condos.

We used this time for our new jobs –

hers in Dulles next to the airport –

and mine in Springfield at our Alexandria SSC.

We came from the country to city life!

In our spare time, we hired a realtor –

and started our search for a home.

We wanted a place that was halfway to work for both of us.

FAIRFAX, VA.!

What we found was a townhome in the Fountain Side Lane –

Three miles to George Mason University –

two miles to the NRA – building!

STICKER SHOCK – this town home was about 1600 SF.

On three levels – three bedrooms –

and two and one-half baths.

But was centrally located to both our jobs.

It would take me one-half hour to get to work –

and she is about twenty minutes!

It was a nice neighborhood –

walkable to a large town square with stores –

shopping and restaurants.

During our time there-

we rode our bikes on trails in a forest behind the house.

This whole area would become a planned TOWN CENTER –

With dozens of stores and bars and grills-

even a Ruth’s Chris Steak House!

We watched it being built –

and eventually the first WEGMENS in the NVA. area.

It was during this time her sister Debbie –

seen here in the middle-

Relocated from Wisconsin –

and stayed with us for a short time-

until she found a place in the Manassas area.

Her other sister Bonnie remains in NWPA in Mount Jewett.

We experienced two traumatic life-changing events-

while living here.

First was 911 – this happened while we worked in the area –

The plane that hit the Pentagon –

flew right over the parking lot where I worked –

And Sherry was right next to the Dulles airport

One plane took off from there,

and all these large tanks were holding fuel right next to her store.

For days the sound of silence ensued.

No planes –

we traveled to see the Pentagon –

and have a picture of the destruction.

This went on for days –

as no planes –

but the high military jets leaving their presence known-

in the trail of white contrails in the sky!

The next event was the DC. SNIPERS!

We were exactly in the middle of all the killings!

It was all around us –

and not knowing from moment to moment who would be next!

We lived in TERROR!

Always be watchful at the beginning-

of a WHITE VAN!

Rumors – going to work at 5am.

Stopping to get gas –

and crouching down behind the car door –

in the light from the overhead lights.

Here is Maddy –

about five years old –

and just a baby when we moved to the area.

I carried her in my arms –

while walking the streets during the quiet period after 911!

Looking at the jet planes so high in the sky.

Our home here –

we lived in it for three and one-half years.

Tammy moved in with us as she came from Rochester to be near us.

Later Debby and Mike moved down from the Syracuse area with Maddy!

It was here that both sets of parents came to visit –

before they passed away.

We have many fond memories of this first home in Fairfax, Va.

Soon – more family members made their way to this area of NVA.

While here –

we watched a new development –

just behind our house going up –

We liked the new townhomes made out of brick.

S o – we decided to sell –

and buy our first new to-be-built home – a block away!

RIDGETOP COMMONS – a 2500 SF. Town Home!

We would be moving up the hill!

Coming in another blog – RIDGETOP COMMONS!

Papa’s World – Our “FOREVER” house in Brambleton!

Our “FOREVER” house in Brambleton, Va. sits on a corner lot – with 3200 SF. on two levels!

This was the second home we had built –

and we thought would be the home we would stay retired in!

After retirement – I spent many a morning sitting here on the front porch until the afternoon hot sun moved me onto the patio.

It was from here that Sherry and I took our first of 10,000 daily steps.

When we finally moved out in 2020 – there were over FIFTHTEEN MILES of walking trails!

We could walk all week and never walk twice on one trail!

We planted all that you see to come back each year.

We put in three Crepe Myrtles – and I mowed and trimmed this by myself after my heart attack!

Here is the side and rear of the horse shoe-shaped house –

the middle was the enclosed courtyard – we had slate put down –

and this area was four hundred and forty square feet.

No one could see in and there were two entrances from the house.

We had two tower gardens here and a BBQ and table and chairs.

Also a glider and two comfy chairs!

The enclosed patio with slate floor – this would be in the shade almost the entire day from the trees planted by the developer.

The gate opened up on the side yard where we had yearly wild strawberries growing!

The twin girls would sit out there and pick and eat!

I really miss this and Sherry chose to sit here instead of on the front porch!

The view looking back from the fence to the kitchen door straight ahead and to the right –

the door which we did not use – leading into the family room.

You could find shade out here all day long!

The door out to the patio off the kitchen – we had granite everywhere.

Many grandkids sat here to snack or craft!

Where the lights hang down – I put them in – is the breakfast table.

There were 34 windows in total in the entire house!

We ate most of our meals here but we also had a formal dining room!

Beyond the hanging lights is the family room with a fireplace.

Many winter days I sat by the warm fireplace.

The family room – to the right is the entrance to the side patio which I put in -not the door but the

patio itself. We also had a Tower Garden here on this side of the house which got the morning sun!

The fireplace and chair that I sat in winter time!

Looking at the breakfast table and the kitchen – beyond is the staircase and the way to the second floor.

We sold over 95 % of the furnishings to the people who purchased the house!

The wood floors were all Bamboo!

Another view of the family room – my watching TV spot was to the far right of the leather couch!

You could sit five here and have room – all the little ones could sit here with us to watch a movie!

The front door and beyond the front porch where I would sit and say hello to the walkers

and bikes going by each day.

To the left is the formal living room – all windows on two sides –

one to the front porch and the other looking out over the enclosed patio.

We would open Christmas packages sometimes here with the families!

The dining room had large double windows looking out toward the street –

and many family dinner were held there, a lot of memories over the fourteen and one-half years!

This is the landing at the top of the stairs – it is here that Sherry had her office which you see on the left.

There also was a TV up here – and three bedrooms and two bathrooms

and a sitting room off the Master that we put a single bed in that was Ella’s when she came to visit.

Maddy had her own room – Sarah could have had her own room but wanted to sleep on a made-up floor bed-

In our room – and when all three little ones came to visit – they also had made-up beds on the master’s floor!

This was supposed to be the “FOREVER” home we would spend retirement in.

Then came the PANDEMIC in 2020 – we were without family ties – restricted –

and to top that off – our 401K took a 33% hit in the downturn – our retirement was being wiped out!

We still had S.S. and some pensions and her Juice Plus monthly income –

But – Loudoun County – which has the highest per-capital income in the USA –

was becoming not affordable to live in with the high cost of taxes and cost of living there!

Then the bright side of all this – the housing market took off – the price of our house was high –

After much discussion – we decided it was time to SELL – and leave our “FOREVER” home!

Selling and moving South to the border of N.C and S.C. – sun – fun and beach and golf time!

We were in and we sold our home – and most of the furniture – made dozens of trips

to the Salvation Army – yard sales and curb-side free to anyone who wanted it!

We downsides to 1900 SF. and now reside in Cameron Woods, OIB. in North Carolina near the border of S.C.

Near the beaches and year-round golf!

Our home here has become most likely our “LAST home.

We enjoyed the fourteen and one-half years in our “FOREVER” home-

but now are comfortable here with new friends and neighbors.

I hope you enjoyed the look back on our life in NVA.

Never to be forgotten –

OUR “FOREVER” HOME IN BRAMBLETON, VA.

Papas World – with trees comes shade and “LEAVES”

We have beautiful trees- three Red maples

and one I do not know what it is!

They provide lots of shade along the side

and in front of the house.

We also have three evergreen trees-

one large pine and three crepe myrtles!

BUT – THIS TIME OF YEAR – ” LEAVES”!

The Sunrise
and all those trees alongside the house

So – we decided to blow them into a pile along the sidewalk.

And then we would pick them up and stuff into bags.

It was chilly – around 38 degrees – but the Sun was out –

blue skies – white puffy clouds –

a good day to rake and stuff!

Here I am with my stocking hat on
stuffing leaves into the paper bags

I had my blower and pushed the leaves onto the sidewalk

Note: This same sidewalk we have to shovel snow when we have it!

It runs in front of the house and along side about 150 feet!

Did I tell you I really do not like snow and ice! LOL

Plus no cold – snow or ice please!

It took us about one hour and we filled up SIX stuffed bags!

I had already done THREE bags a week ago!

Stuffed – ready to set out
on Tuesday
that is the day
they pick up lawn waste

The yard was green once again –

I had mowed the second leaf fall early last week

I do this to mulch them up and put nutrients

back into the ground!

It is all part of living
in a four season’s
part of the country

Now – to the present – Christmas lights are up

All three trees are decorated

All the mangers set up and the little lighted churches placed

The inside decorations are done

the storage tubs back in place in the garage

And for twenty four hours it rained!

I went out front to gather up the paper

and there it was –

” ON TOP OF MORE LEAVES “

The rain had brought down more leaves!

The leaves are all wet from the rain –

There are still leaves( about 20 % ) on the trees.

We will have to wait to blow them but I also am thinking

I will once again mow and mulch them!

I am not a TECHIE

We still have time – being retired – you have choices

Bundle up – go outside

mow or rake or gather

or just stay in – turn the fireplace on

turn on the lights on the trees ( NO LEAVES THERE)

grab a book and just relax

That is what I call

Papa’s World – More memories of life!

Our life together has been residing in four states – WNY – NVA – SC and NC – initially growing up in Pa.

Neither of us like the cold – snow and ice weather.

Now we live on the border of N.C. and S.C. – where we have almost no snow or ice – but at times a heavy frost!

We live near two beaches – Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach.

We also have during these 40-plus years made life – long friends!

Jimmy and Dottie – I have known since to late 70s. We all grew up in the same town in Pa.

Cindy and Buck were their friends and then ours as we moved next door to them in 1988!

Today – we get together at each other’s homes – play golf – sing songs and generally have a great time.

There is much laughter in this group of friends!

Our close friends – on the beach – listening to live music!

Papa’s World – The beginning of a visit to the family!

The car is packed and we are ready to head out – back to NVA!

This would be a long weekend-like trip.

The front porch – flowers – shrubs – living here we have warm weather in the Fall.

Allowing us to continue to grow our flowers.

Green all year – almost no snow or ice!

I packed warm clothes for our trip back to NVA – where it can and does snow – cold wind –

There will be gatherings inside and outside.

We will live day to day and dress accordingly.

My view as I back out of the driveway and head up the street – going to be a nice travel day!

The trip North involves a good portion of Interstate 95 – a road I hate to travel.

Alas – what normally takes a little over seven hours turned into a little over ten hours!

Traffic was horrible – slowing to a complete stop in many places.

I guess trying to navigate alternate roads with red lights doesn’t save time!

Near our destination – rain and colorful foliage – the leaves are bright reds- yellows and orange.

While for the most part on back roads, it was peaceful – hardly any traffic at all –

but eventually, you have to get on 95 and then it starts – stop and go.

Our trip was worth it when we saw the family and the good times began making memories.

PAPA’S WORLD – THE BEGINNING OF A VISIT TO THE FAMILY! DRIVING BACK TO NVA!

Papa’s World – celebrating our forty years with family – our anniversary.

Family – they all came to celebrate our anniversary of forty years.

Since we have moved to the border of S.C. and N.C. – we are 400 to 500 miles away from the family back in NVA!

We told them we were coming back for graduation and they made plans for a winery –

that we all could meet at for an afternoon including Marley – the Goldendoodle.

Marley was a hit – our son-in-law Mike is allergic to cats and dogs – but out in the open, he was okay.
The grandchildren and finally a boy – BODE!
The winery had big open spaces and we pretty much had this space to ourselves.
Mother and daughters.

Papa’s World – Through the years – our life!

June 25th. 1982 – our wedding day – Papa and Sherry

We dated a little over a year before we got engaged and then a year later married.

We both were married before – she had two daughters – I had two sons – and we had each other.

We lived way out in the country – the driveway was 1/10th of a mile long –

great in winter to sled ride.

That first year I mowed everything by hand – it took five days!

And then – rest for two and start over again – we bought a riding mower!

On marriage was based on the Church on the rock-solid!

Those early years were lean years – combining two sets of kids –

running back and forth – very little extra money –

but we survived and to this day look back fondly on all those times.

We always traveled by van – all of us.

We would pack breakfast – lunch, and dinners – take adventures –

the kids loved it.

Camping – in tents – visiting friends.

Then the kids started leaving one by one.

Marriages – moving – college – our family was just the two of us.

We started to travel – the country and the world

The kids were gone – we had moved from the country and into town.

Now – the house was empty and we had the opportunity to transfer to NVA.

We went to NVA and the daughters and family followed us.

We bought and sold three houses in NVA.

My sons stayed in Pa.

But – it seemed like the extended family all moved to NVA.

Retirement came – and once again – we thought of selling and moving farther south.
We made the move in 2020 – and today we are in OIB, Cameron Woods, N.C.

The family stayed in Pa. and Va. – her sister is building a small condo near us.

The family has visited us many times – my sons are coming end of summer.

Forty years have passed since that wedding day – and we still are one and going strong.

Papa’s World

Papa’s World – life has changed – memories from the past 16 months!

Before the Pandemic and COVID19 – we were in Florida at a little British cafe!

We were on our way back to the air BNB – looking for a place to stop and eat and we found this little gem.

I can not remember the name but it had the flag of the British hanging outside.

It – was very cool and the food was good.

In the Reston Town Center – open air – seated 6 feet apart – lunch with friends Jayson and Ginger.

After we returned home in March – the Pandemic hit.

A few months later – we met our friends in the open air seated more than six feet apart.

Ordered lunch from one of the places to eat for pick up.

And in the middle of the common area ice skating rink – enjoyed ourselves.

Long before the Pandemic – Jo and Paul visited us from Tucson Az. for a weeks tour of our area in NVA and DC.

Old friends – who live in Az. visited us for a week and we showed them NVA and Washington DC.

When we had gone out there for a conference – after it was over – they picked us up and we went to Sedona.

We also went back to their home and they showed us around Tucson.

It was a great week filled with a lot of historical sites!

Thank you for reading Papa’s World

I will continue the MEMORIES in the next blog of the past 16 months!

Taking two of our older grand daughters to the beach in Sandbridge.

SHERRY SARAH ELLA and PAPA!

Memory I shall cherish for the rest of my life during the Pandemic of 2020.

Papa’s World – The Krohns come to visit North Myrtle Beach!

Marcus Papa Sherry Tammy

They all came this time – for almost a week’s stay –

Tammy and the little ones had come down for a long weekend

Now – it was Marcus time to see where we would be living!

Here we are on the ICW at Barefoot Landing!

We had met them here instead of the condo – for we knew the little ones would be hungry –

they had left NVA at 5:09 AM. and we were standing in the Parking lot at a little before noon –

Less that seven hours!

And we told them – it would be 45 minutes fewer that that at the new house!

Our goal was to keep the time traveled to less than seven hours

and for both sets of family’s it will be that!

The above picture is for both family’s as they love the tradition at Christmas time!

Taylor Bode Sherry Cassidy Tammy Marcus

We planned to have a late lunch and early dinner at the new brewery

CROOKED HAMMOCK BREWERY – that had opened up a couple weeks earlier

outdoors – and they -Marcus and Tammy loved the draft beer!

Taking a picture along the ICW Marcus and Tammy and the little ones

Family is and has been important to us – both daughters followed us to NVA.

One was married with a small child ( Maddy)

And one met her future husband in NVA.

Papa’s World – Returning home for Christmas and family time.

After two and one half months –

we journeyed back to our home base in NVA!

We wanted to spend the Holiday with the kids of both families.

And – we took the Covid19 test and were negative!

Our plan was to stay for three weeks and then come back to the Condo

at Ocean Keyes in North Myrtle Beach – S.C.

Papa Maddy Bode Ella Sherry Taylor Sarah Cassidy – our six grand kids whom all wanted us back for Christmas!

“All I want for Christmas is you grandma” says Sarah!

Our time there was both long and short –

long in that it was cold and I do not do cold very well!

We had their first snow – ice and wind for the year.

Short in that it went very fast and we miss them all ready!

A visit to a winery in the snow with a log campfire! BLEU FROG!!!!

We stayed back and forth until our family in Lake Holiday had to go into quarantine

due to coming in contact with a neighbor just by talking outdoors with her.

So – they were able to get the negative tests back and we went up Christmas Eve

to spend the night with them!

So – we got to spend quality time with both families

and then we all had dinner together.

MorMor Bode Taylor Cassidy Tammy

While the weather was cold – we did manage to stay inside – play games

put puzzles together – good dinners and the little ones loved it!

We made the most of the time together

We – had family time

We spent time together before we were to leave

and head back South!

We even got to watch and cheer on the Buffalo Bills football team!

A big part of our sports life before we moved TO NVA!

It was cold – there was snow – ice and wind.
