Papa’s World – Evening trip to Sunset Beach!

After dinner, I said to Sherry – “Want to go to Sunset Beach – get ice cream and stand on the deck”?

That is Southern Beach Living!

Living the Salt Life!

Our view of the Gazebo on Sunset Beach where we stood with our cups of small ice cream!

This is where the bathrooms – showers and free parking are!

If you turn around – you are looking at the beach – pier and ocean – we stood here and a bonus – there was live music on the pier we could listen to – that is why all the people faced the pier!

Looking West from this spot – the dunes – the pay-for parking lot – and the first row of houses – oceanfront means long walkways over the protected dunes to the beach and ocean!

Because the coastline here is on a curve – the beach faces almost South and a little bit East!

From Charleston, S.C. to Wilmington, N.C. the coast looks like a quarter-moon crescent!

Sort of like a huge coastline bay!

Most storms come up from Charleston and then make a beeline to Wilmington – Cape Fear River area and then onto the Outer Banks!

I believe the last Hurricane to cause disaster damage was in the 50s!

Sea oats on the dune – we can be here in 15 minutes – but we have the island – the ICW and the main coastline between us and the ocean.

So far we have experienced a tropical storm and a grade 1 Hurricane, a number 2 is pushing it for me – but could remain – it is the wind and the trees I fear the most!

Living the Salt life – choosing to be here – living life one day at a time!

Thanks for reading and as always HGD!

A painting at the entrance to Sunset Beach Pier.

This was drawn and painted by one of the employees who work at the pier!

The morning – first a beach walk – then two mazes for the kids to work their way out –

and then to the pier to have ice cream before their parents get there from NVA!

View from the pier and in the middle is the MAZE with people walking through it!

THANKS FOR READING PAPA’S WORLD livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

The end of twelve days with the grandkids – Sunset Beach Pier – until next summer!

Papa’s World – Ocean Isle Beach fireworks with grandkids.

The moon shining over OIB before the start of fireworks.

It was a warm evening – and the kids were excited – we made our way onto the island and found a spot to park right across the street from the pier – we carried our chairs to a grassy area next to the roadway – we were about to have front row seats!

To our left is the traffic circle and it seemed like hundreds of cars and golf carts were still streaming in and around the circle – most going past in front of us.

Papa and the crew – this was in the other direction from the circle – and there was a constant stream of cars – I have no idea where they went because that end is the end of the island some three miles away.
The opening of the fireworks continued for a one-half hour!
The view – palm trees – and parking lot of the pier – and then the ocean.
Thanks, for reading Papa’s World – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Ocean Isle Beach fireworks with the grandkids!

Papa’s World – The beginning and end of a good day – in between sitting by the ICW in the park!

In this case – we found a place in the park!

We had an early morning walk – the sun had already come up and it was the beginning of a good day!

Cameron Woods Community – looking East!

After walking in the community – we decided to go to Sunset Beach and see what was happening in the park on the mainland side.

This park sits on the banks of the ICW – and has these giant live oak trees –

providing shade – paved walking trails and benches to sit on.

Also – three-person glider swings – all facing the water!

In a small portion of the park – people bring their own chairs.
Our view as we sat on a glider-swing!
One going fast and one going slow – as it is in life in general! The views of the ICW!

We had restrooms nearby – picnic tables and a shelter – a car nearby and walking distance to ice cream!

Places to eat were also close by – as was the boat launch.

In the couple hours we were there – hundreds of boats came by on the ICW!

We will go back – take our chairs – cooler and food – find a place in the shade and just relax.

A 15-minute drive from our home in Cameronwood Community – on the mainland side-

SUNSET BEACH PARK.

Thanks for reading and once we got back home the sun was starting to set –

an end to a very good day!

Papa’s World – Childhood in a little town in NWPA – what it is like growing up in ELDRED!

A small town – I knew almost everyone!
My brother-in-law Bill on the left – was the town cop – and later the mayor – many memories of him and me!

He was a very funny man and watched over me and my buddies!

State troopers were at his house at all times as he was friends with several of them.

He would let us know and made sure we were on our best behavior.

He had nicknames for everyone and he called my younger brother “JUICE”!

My younger brother Mike ( JUICE ) – always doing something – a great golfer – miss him.

He broke both arms at different times and they were crooked – but could he play golf and hit that ball!

He was a 300-yard driver back in the ’70s!

He had a one-stroke handicap –

he knocked his front tooth out by twirling a dog leash until it came around his head

and smacked that tooth!

He was riding my bike – he was too small for it and his foot slipped and he had a rupture –

He played football and basketball and went onto college and kicked field goals.

He was always doing something!

Sitting on my front porch – looking up and across the street – sat this church.

It was part of my playground growing up – but I had to be extra careful –

always look both ways before crossing the main street!

I had neighborhood friends on both sides of that North Main Street.

There were a lot of kids when I was growing up there.

A lot of memories sitting on the lawn in front of the church –

a lot of KICK THE CAN game and HIDE and SEEK were done there!

Tastee Freeze – is still there today!

We would walk some two miles to this place – they had the best soft ice cream!

We also would go and buy their burgers and fries!

Today – whenever I visit back home – we pass it and the memories after all those years come back!

The ELDRED TASTEE FREEZE – often think I should stop for old times!

Growing up in Eldred!

Growing up – I rode my bike everywhere – to the park to play baseball or football – the tennis courts and the dances that were held there –

The Town Team men’s baseball team and my dad as manager.

The carnivals in the park –

The parades and celebrations – the crowds of people and sleeping out and roaming the streets.

ELDRED was a small town where everybody knew your name!

ELDRED – SMALL TOWN USA
