Papa’s World – Ferry Landing – OIB – Completed!

Several years ago – a severe storm damaged the Ferry Landing pier and picnic area.

At one point in time many years ago –

A Ferry was operating here on the East end of OIB!

Then – it ceased – I do not know why –

but it became a local spot for pier fishing on the ICW!

The storm damage changed all of that and it became a hazard.

Early this year we visited the landing –

As the reconstruction and repairs had been completed!

Standing on the new deck and looking back at the gazebo and picnic area of Ferry Landing.

The flags at the time this picture was taken were half-mast – for President Jimmy Carter.

At the opposite end of this street is an entrance to the beach and a short walk to the long-installed

rock wall called THE GROIN –

Constructed several years ago to stop beach erosion.

Standing at the deck of the fishing pier –

Looking back at the gazebo and all the parking spaces leading up to the deck walkway.

This all sits right on the ICW!

The view is across the ICW to Brick Landing Golf Course and clubhouse.

Not seen in this picture but to the right –

It is the Brick Landing boat launch.

Also – further to the right is a campground where our friends camped for a couple nights.

We have also watched the Christmas boat parade from the fairway of the golf course.

This just might be a new place we can come to watch from the island!

Across the ICW sits the campground.

In the distance is Holden Beach –

I said to Sherry –

Now that this is complete – it just might be a change of pace place to bring our chairs-

Sit and watch the boat traffic on the ICW during spring – summer, and fall!

There also is a small beach here and plenty of room to fish from the deck and off the shore!

LOL – Laugh – smile and have funny thoughts!

Thanks for reading –

The Ferry Landing will be a place we take guests to see –

A peaceful experience on OIB.

And then walk to the other end and observe the ocean!

Papa’s World – Took the family to Fort Fisher Aquarium.

We have a tight-knit family – and all are in our thoughts and our lives every day.

Debby – Ella and Sherry – an ancient replica of MEGADON!

We had taken them here years ago -and the memories of that long ago the time came back!

Giving them a chance to once again have another memory is what we do – we share with our families those precious memories.

Afterward, we rode the ferry back to Southport where we went to FISHY-FISHY for a late lunch-early dinner.

We showed the waterfront to them – walking around –

What a great way to end our trip – a ferry boat ride both ways

and then food –

Papa’s World – the Tour of BALD HEAD ISLAND comes to an end – FERRY RIDE back to the mainland.

One last lookup close to OLD BALDY LIGHTHOUSE!

Our time to leave is almost upon us – we turned the golf cart in – almost five hours of riding around!

OLD BALDY LIGHTHOUSE just outside the bike and cart rental!

Be sure if you do this – check out what places to eat are open!

On Wednesday – ONLY ONE WAS OPEN!

Also – find a map – we found one at the Ferry Boat Terminal – you will need it!

If more than two of you – I suggest a cart with seats – facing forward – it is hard to see looking back!

The ride on the Ferry boat!

Sit outside if you can – find the sunshine – and watch for the boats!

A COAST GUARD CUTTER!

I had no idea they patrolled these waters here!

And a large CONTAINER CARGO SHIP!

I did not expect to see this – among the many barrier islands here

and between the mainland and Bald Head Island!

Making me wonder if that is why the Coast Guard is here?

And just how deep is this channel here?

PAPA’S WORLD – BALD HEAD ISLAND, N.C.

Papa’s World – exploring Bald Head Island, N.C.

Leaving the Ferry Terminal at Southport, N.C.

Our neighbors – Diane and Steve – went with us for the day to explore Bald Head Island –

the only way to the island is by boat – with a very large terminal building.

No automobiles are allowed on the island.

Once there – you can take a tram to your rental or if an owner to your home.

The transportation is by walking – biking or golf carts!

Rental areas are by the departure terminal on Bald Head Island.

On our way to Bald Head Island, N.C.
Our entered the docking area for the ferry at Bald Head Island
Diane standing next to our transportation for the next five hours.

Rentals are easy – use your phone – pay by credit card – five minutes and we were on our way!

OLD BALDY LIGHTHOUSE
While we did not go inside – it was built in 1817!

The island is all set up for golf carts – but there are maintenance trucks here –

I think different companies store them in a parking lot here.

Plumbing – electrical and building companies.

Utilities and machines for road repairs.

I think this is the small house for the lighthouse keeper!
PAPA’S WORLD

I will continue in the next blog of our tour of Bald Head Island – MY BLOG: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – At Bald Head Island – we had lunch sitting in the sand on the beach.

BALDHEAD ISLAND – NORTH CAROLINA

We had decided to make the trip to this island right off the coast of Southport, N.C.

It is unique in that no autos are allowed – you cross on a ferry boat – and once there –

you either walk – rent a bike or a golf cart!

You can take luggage – in a small shipping container – and a tram will take you to your rental.
Once there – most rentals have golf carts as the whole island is set up for them.

The view from the ferry arriving on the island.

The beaches are wide and plenty of public beach access from the golf cart paths.

Along the way to the beach access – the little house for the lighthouse keeper!

There were many things to see – rows of neat houses – cottages – some private – others you rent.

The beach was deserted – no matter which one we stopped and walked!

Miles of beach – nothing but sand and water.
It was a beautiful autumn day – high 60’s – blue skies and bright sun.

On this midweek day – all the places to eat or drink were closed for the day except one!

And that would close at 2:00 PM.

So – we decided to go back and get a boxed lunch –

and then find the closest beach access – park and walk and sit on the beach and eat!

Papa and Sherry with our neighbors Steve and Diane – they are from Western New York where we lived until 1999!

Eating our lunch sitting on the sand with Diane and Steve – who just happen to live the summer months

back in WNY near where we lived before moving to NVA!

Small WORLD as they now are our neighbors in Cameron Woods – Ocean Isle Beach – N.C.

Our view as we ate lunch.

My next blog will be in and around Bald Head Island – riding the golf cart for four hours!

Thanks, for reading Papa’s World
