Papa’s World – Looking back – my grandparents!

Growing up,

my grandmother lived with us,

and my grandmother’s name was Nora.

Her husband was named David,

and my middle name is David.

She was very old to me at the time –

I remember sitting on her lap on the front porch –

We watched a neighbor boy walking to school –

He was two years older than me –

I asked her when I would go to school?

Doing the math –

I must have been four years old!

Both my parents worked –

so she raised me along with my sister –

who was fifteen years older.

I had a bed in my parent’s room –

and she had a side bedroom.

My older brother,

ten years older than me,

had the front bedroom.

Eventually – she went to live with my aunt Alice.

At that time my younger brother came along –

and we were too much for her to handle.

We were like water and oil –

cat and dog!

He would look at me –

and let out a high-pitched scream –

and then I was in trouble.

My childhood after she left-

was spent looking up to my older brother –

he was my idol –

and at 18 he went off to college –

I moved into his bedroom at the front of the house –

overlooking the main street.

The early morning sun came through the windows –

and woke me up.

Funny – later in life I still wake up before dawn.

I would fall asleep listening to the cars –

and trucks going past on the main street-

and behind the house were the railroad tracks –

I would listen for the train –

blowing its whistle –

and then the “CLICK-CLICK” from the wheels as it came along the tracks.

But – those early years came with me-

being really close to Grandma.

She would cook huge pots of bean soup –

and we would eat them for days!

In her early years –

she was Pa. Dutch –

she and her mother traveled with the logging people-

She would cook the meals –

breakfast – lunch and dinner.

That was in the late 1800s – I believe she was born in 1885!

I do not know much about that period of her life –

Just that her maiden name was Schick (SP) –

and she had a sister –

who we called Aunt Emma –

and a brother we called Uncle Frank.

There may have been more but I do not remember.

They – like my father –

were what we called “DOWN HOMERS”-

Downstate Pa.-

In the Brookview and Corsica area.

My early life was shaped by Grandma –

I regret that she came –

and went so fast in my life.

She was 64 or so when I was born –

And she and grandpa David-

had a large family –

ELEVEN BROTHERS AND SISTERS!

My mother –

was second from the youngest and Allen was the youngest.

My Aunt Alice was third from the youngest –

who she went and lived with.

Grandpa died before I was born

and I have always thought –

that my middle name came from him!

He was a tall man – of Irish descent – 6’3″ I was told.

A generous man –

during the great depression –

He would take flour and meat to the neighbors to help them out!

They had a large farm back then.

All those kids – three girls and eight boys worked the farm with Grandpa.

Grandma at that time was done with the cooking for the loggers and ran the household!

He died from a Heart Attack while stringing up a hog to butcher!

The line of the family all had heart problems –

me included –

and my older brother.

Mary – my mother – Aunt Kate – she was tall like her father – not sure? Grandma ( Nora) –

Grandpa David – Clark – Aunt Alice – Uncle Allen.

Back row to the left – Uncle Roy – a veteran of WWI –

The boy’s names –

Jim – Sid – Elmer -Everett-

I am not sure about the rest-

as they were gone when I was young.

And I had never seen them this young!

Uncle Roy always came to the house dressed in a suit –

vest and tie and a wide-brimmed hat in his hands,

He was the oldest and survived WWI!

He had a wife named Hazel –

and I believe still lived somewhere Down Home!

Most of the others –

made their way to WNY –

and the Wellsview area –

except Mom – Alice and Allen who lived near Eldred.

Aunt Kate and Uncle Clint also remained DOWN HOMERS –

and had a large farm.

My earliest memory of her is a HUGE BLACK BULL with horns in a barn stall!

Scared the crap out of me!

There were many cousins –

but I was like a second family that came along –

everyone was ten to twenty-five or more years older than I was.

I want to thank Jody Peterson –

my cousin’s son who posted this picture to FaceBook!

I had never seen it!

He is the grandson of my Aunt Alice.

I believe I take more after my mother’s side of the family – they all were broad chests –

curly hair –

Papa’s World – Mary and Fitz- Donna and Roger – my mom and dad – sister and brother.

Good day everyone – the beginnings of a new day.

I am guessing this picture I am about to show you were taken some 81 or 82 years ago!

My brother was some ten years older than I and my sister some fifteen years older.

I will soon be 73 years old!

In this picture are my mother Mary and my dad “Bob” Fitz.

Mary holding Roger with Donna standing in front of my dad Bob. He was over six feet tall.

Today if my brother had lived he would have been 83 years old

and my sister Donna would have been 88 years old.

My father passed when he was 59 years old and I was 19 years old.

He passed from lung cancer.

His full name was Clarence Russel Fitzsimmons –

everyone for some reason called him “Bob”!

FITZ was his nickname.

He was a supervisor for the South Penn Oil Company and many a time I remember him taking me to work with him.

Later after he retired from there he was part owner of the local Western Auto.

He actually graduated from H.S. when he was a Sophomore – but his father – who was a teacher –

made him take his junior and senior years over as he was too young to go find a job.

He played basketball and baseball and later would manage the local baseball town team.

He was an avid golfer and bowler – a mechanic and carpenter.

He loved fishing and would spend every summer two weeks –

deep into the far northern Canadian wilderness.

Mary my mother was Pa. Dutch from her mother’s side and Irish Catholic from her father’s side.

My dad was Irish Protestant and that made for quite the dynamics in the house.

There were many fun times in that house!

Dad’s ancestors came straight from County Tyrone in Ireland.

But mom ruled the house so to speak – she was not that big but she was a little spitfire.

She once thumped him on top of the head with a frying pan!

She taught me this.

She lived to be almost 98 years old and everyone loved her.

She would sit on her front porch on the main street in little Eldred, Pa.

Cars would go by and honk their horns and windows rolled down, “HELLO MARY”!

She baked pies – cakes – homemade and rolls and bread.

They both taught me this.

My sister was 15 years older than I and my brother 10 years older than I.

So when I came along it was more or less a second family for them.

Then my younger brother was four years later.

They are all gone now but not forgotten.

I am the last of that family – I have two sons to pass the name on.

Thank you for reading Papa’s World – a little about my family –

OUR GRANDDAUGHTER SARAH GOES TO THE PROM – SWEET SIXTEEN – WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE!!!!!!!!

Papa’s World – Memories of Great Country Farm and twins birthday!

Tayor “BEAR” as mommy calls her.
“Little” Cassidy as we call her.

Two years old – my how time has passed and their next birthday they will be twelve!

Two blond hair – blue eyed fraternal twins.

MEMORIES of them running around – each with one another – always huddling together.

Where one went – the other followed!

Aunt and cousins and Tammy – family.

MEMORIES of all their cousins from both sides of the family.

Friends and family celebrating!

MEMORIES of aunt and uncle and friends!

Family and friends on a hayride!

To be continued in the next blog – friends and family celebrating.

Thank you for reading Papa’s World – the twin’s birthday.

PAPA’S WORLD – Grandparents – family and friends.

Papa’s World – random pictures – kids – golf – and a rainbow in the fountain on the lake.

Today – I post some pictures – just random pictures – but ones I have close to my heart!
Taylor holding MorMor’s hand – in turn MorMor also holding Bode’s hand.

They adore Sherry – whom they call MorMor – Swede for Mothers Mother!

When we walk with all three – it usually is Taylor who loses out to the other two in holding her hands.

This time it was Cassidy – who with each passing day – is becoming more and more independent.

These two are coming closer and closer together as they grow up.

They are twins – but had to come early as Taylor was taking all the nutrients.

Taylor is going to be really tall – close to six foot while Cassidy will be like her mother 5’6″.

Taylor loves to ride horses – Cassidy has a variety of interests –

but will sit for hours drawing off her computer and is really good!

I thought this to be funny – it brought a smile to my face!

We moved south to find more time to golf – warmer weather and being close to our friends!

Sherry and Cindy – we have been friends with the McBrides for almost 35 years.

They moved about 25 or 26 years to the Wilmington N.C. area – and we would spend time with them once or twice a year.

Then we moved to NVA and they would do the same.

Now – we are building a new home about 40 miles away from them –

and if the weather is nice – we golf once a week with them –

always on a new course – could be on the weekend or a week day.

They can and do stay with us and we do the same with them.

If our new home is not done on time and we have to give up the condo – they have offered us a place to stay.

FRIENDS! GOOD TIMES! LAUGHS!

This is what we have wanted to do for a very long time – it was too expensive in NVA and down here so many courses to choose from.

We both have a love to golf – one of Sherry’s highlights in golfing came with the day she broke 50 –

and it was a day she was golfing with her father!

A memory she shall always carry with her on the course. Now – she beats me! LOL

The view we have almost every morning when we wake up – the master bedroom has a big glass sliding door on her side of the bed – where all she has to do each morning is open her eyes and see this.

I see it each morning also – but I always am up before the dawn – have been that way all my life.

My favorite time of the day – writing my blog – sipping my coffee and watching the sun rise –

listening to the sounds of nature and just enjoying morning time.

Now the sun shines – causing a rainbow in the mist of the water fountain!
A peaceful setting we shall miss when we leave – but we have had by the end – nine months.

A memory we shall carry forward into the new home.

You can hear the pounding surf a half mile away –

We walk there almost every day –

the water fowl – geese – ducks – mallards – swans – otter – turtles – snakes

and really huge fish we can see when we look down onto the water.

Storms blowing in and out – rain and wind – nature at its best.

It would of been nice to have lived to the left of the picture – single family homes!

But – they were way too expensive – and the condos here – not enough space and no garage.

We have a storage unit – not a lot – but enough so that it would not fit.

The town houses here besides the condo’s – were out of our price range –

plus the one we looked at – needed a lot of work.

This is a beautiful area – one I shall remember –

We were blessed to have spent time here – but it also was expensive!

PAPA’S WORLD livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – She will turn 18 this summer – it seems like yesterday she was Tiny – Ella College – Randolph College Va.

Ella – our second oldest granddaughter – enrolling in Randolph College in Lynchburg Va.

We called her “TINY” as she was growing up –

Her father came up with that nickname –

Today she stands 5′ 8 1/2 ” –

Our little girl is all grown up!

Along with her entrance into the four year program – she will also play college soccer – being recruited – she had two schools to select from – and it just so happens to be cross town from the University of Lynchburg – where her sister starts on the soccer team there – and yes they will compete against one another!
Ella with her mother Debby – all three granddaughters are as tall or taller than their mother. Debby’s mother – Sherry – is 5′ 9″ – so they are most likely inheriting the Swedish genes from her.
It is a beautiful campus – nestled in the foothills surrounding Lynchburg.
The soccer field a easy walk from the dorms.
Ella with her father Mike.

She endured two injuries during her Middle school and H.S.

Both were broken bones in her feet.

One she was stepped on with a cleat

and the other she just landed wrong on it.

She lost two seasons of playing soccer

but when she did – was recruited by two different colleges.

Today she walks the path to her future!

Due to the Pandemic – her H.S. soccer season was moved from the fall to the spring.

She is about to begin playing –

Her travel soccer was played although the number of games reduced.

She competed and will move onto the next level in the Fall.

Ella and Sarah – sisters.
