Papa’s World – The day the SNOW came!

It started off like many other days in NVA-

Brambleton, Va. –

We were a couple miles away from the backside of the DULLES AIRPORT –

For Washington, D.C. in Loudoun County.

Be prepared –

a winter storm watch has been announced.

This was the view from the steps of our front porch home –

of the intersection.

We were prepared –

after all, we had spent the first 50 years of our lives –

living and coping with winter snowbelt storms in WNY and NWPA!

But – all of that did not compare to what was to come.

Our patio – is enclosed by the house on three sides –

and a fence on the outer side toward the street.

Many family times spent here –

Back in WNY – I had a van – with wide tires.

I would take the van –

and ride back and forth on the driveway –

Packing down the snow instead of paying someone to plow it!

Here it was different-

only the driveway was about two car lengths long!

I had my shovel and a large pushbroom.

Then it started to snow –

light at first –

Then it started to stick to the paved sidewalks and road.

It continued all day and into the night –

We took turns trying to keep ahead of it.

Here Sherry attempts to clear a path on the front sidewalk!

You can see ahead of her where I had managed a path to the road.

Early morning of the next day –

less than 24 hours after the start.

It had turned into a major snowstorm in NVA! and the East Coast.

It continued the next morning !

They were trying to plow –

and keep the roads open the next day-

but it continued to come down.

The open door is out to the back patio next to the garage and driveway.

The garage door – over 36 inches and still snowing!

Me digging outside by the back patio.

The weather alerts kept coming –

the storm was not over!

It was piling up – soon the snow banks would be taller than me!

The entrance to the patio from the kitchen –

Over waist deep –

Not going out there-

and we had an all-nighter coming up!

That night after 24 hours of snow –

A look at the patio,

That fence I could look over on my tip toes!

If you go back to the picture of looking outside at the patio before the storm from inside this window-

This is looking from the outside into the front living room!

We had over 48 inches of snow in less than a day and a half.

In all the years of living in the snow belts up North –

We had never experienced –

this amount in such a short period.

The official measurements came from the DULLES AIRPOT just a few miles away!

We sold that home in 2020 and moved to the border area of OIB- SUNSET BEACH-

Our winters here are much different – even though in early Feb. we experienced snow-

This is a rare event here.

But we did get three to five inches with a hard crust.

Everything lasted maybe 5 to 7 days!

And then a few days later after it was gone –

We had 80-plus degrees.

There is a saying down here –

“IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE WEATHER – WAIT FIVE MINUTES AND IT WILL CHANGE”!

LOL – BUT FOR ONE DAY IT SNOWED AND SNOWED –

give me that beach chair any day-

and I will try to get up – better-

than shoveling snow!!! LOL

Papa’s World – Time to look toward Winter!

Summer and Fall have gone and arrived!

Winter is just around the corner.

Looking back on why we moved here –

and forward to why I now love Winter!

A view of OIB from the Causeway Bridge over the ICW!

We can gaze at this view every day if we wish.

A generous ten-minute drive from our home to here!

Being this close –

and also just another five minutes to Sunset Beach –

offers walking the beach in Winter –

except when the wind blows and the sand stings!

Other than that –

a jacket and scarf is all I need –

NO SNOW – NO ICE and COLD THAT I CAN BEAR!

Summers can be hot – but the beach always has a breeze!

Here – we walked a little bit chilly to start with –

but with the Sun – the windbreakers soon came off!

Summer is fun –

family – friends and cruising the ICW!

Sherry won first prize in a raffle –

this pontoon boat for 8 hours on the ICW!

We also rented one when our close friends came for a visit

and we cruised the ICW –

spotting Dolphins and just general good fun.

Fall – Summer and Spring are beautiful here –

at least I believe so.

Golfing which we do year-round –

here I hit one of those shots that bring you back –

The ball carried the lake –

and ended up just off the green on the edge –

where we putt for birdie –

but made par!

I have always said –

it is the one shot that keeps my hopes up-

and playing another round!

In the heart of winter –

we will once again bundle up –

and walk the beach!

But – as I said – no snow or ice –

a little breezy –

but no blowing sand –

I can and do handle this!

Cameron Woods Community –

Fits my lifestyle of four seasons of living!

Papa’s World – Meet friends on Broadway on the beach!

Friends were going to be in the area in mid-December so we arranged to meet at Broadway on the Beach in Myrtle Beach!

Christmas lights galore – and we were there on a Friday night and hardly anyone was around!

Reflection in the water of the Christmas tree which changed colors!

Now blue and changing to other colors – just beautiful!

It was around 60 degrees and hardly any wind.

Even Santa was not busy! LOL

We had dinner at Walburgers.

It was fun seeing old friends once more.

PAPA’S WORLD – OIB – WINTERTIME – WALKING THE BEACH!

Papa’s World – Our first SNOW in Cameron Woods – Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. RARE!

SNOW! The week prior – ICE – IT IS FOLLOWING ME!

I seem to be the person if it is going to happen – it will happen to me.

This is very RARE here this close to the ocean so I am told.

And to be fair – within an hour or so – it was gone!

Looking out the lanai at the snow on the ground and swirling in the air.

Now – really – I could care less if I ever see snow again – some people think that is nuts –

but I just do not like the snow-ice and cold – and I lived in WNY & NWPA for 50 years!

So I know all about blizzards – running my van up and down the driveway to pack it down –

Shoveling – chipping ice – burning 21 cords of wood hand carried inside and to the basement for the woodstove – that stove kept us warm through one week without electricity – and power –

that plus the living room fireplace –

going to work at 5am. through unplowed roads and a foot of fresh snow and another foot on the way.

The Tower Garden all covered up and survived all the ice – snow and cold.

I think it is so pretty coming down – covering in white – but that is my extent of liking it.

Back North – we would go cross-country skiing – in the Alleghany National Park on groomed trails.

As a kid, we were always outside sledding – building forts and snowball fights.

My memories are in the past – my present is NO SNOW! LOL
Lonely birdfeeder with no birds in the snow.

As I said – it was over in an hour – sunshine and no snow anywhere – the WHY we moved South.

The Sun is back – the air still cool – the roads dry – NO ICE – NO SNOW!

Diane – Sherry, and Papa – walking after the snow – in the sunshine and cool air!

Papa’s World – our very first RARE winter ICE STORM – Cameron Woods – OIB – N.C.

One-quarter inch of ICE over everything!

Moving South to the border of N.C. and S.C. – we must have brought winter weather with us!

This is a very rare event in this part of the country and we were here to experience it!

It started raining the day before and by nightfall – the temps had dropped to freezing!

By morning it had gone down to 26 degrees!

that is cold down here!

Everything is covered in a coat of ice.

We knew it was coming and were prepared not to go out on that black ice!

We had flashlights and our generator if needed – but I did not want to go that far!

We were told to be careful with the garage door being ice shut!

DON’T WORRY – BE HAPPY!

We lost the electricity three times for short periods – the news the night before showed the electric

company bringing in some 200 personnel from the midwest to help out – and they were terrific!

Ice everywhere – the trees were coated!

Our Oleander plants – three of them – were bent right over – they survived!

Thank goodness we did not have the wind – no big trees came down or branches.

We dodged a bullet and when the sun came out – the ice melting on the trees

created a drizzle of steady raindrops.

The bushes and mulch are covered in ice.

We have had a cold wave that extends all the way South deep into Florida!

We were worried about our TOWER GARDEN – so I dug out our protective look like metal covering!

We had used this back in NVA but not with ICE!

The back patio – to the right – the covered TOWER GARDEN!

Our experiment to grow twelve months of the year continues!

This protective covering kept the plants – green leafy – safe – the pump kept running on a timer –

and we continue to grow our vegetables even through mid-twenty degrees and ICE!

The covering is perforated – absorbed the sun in the daytime and protects the veggies

during the low temps at night and the freezing rain.

Papa’sorld – While snow – ice and cold hit the East Coast – this is our Winter day!

Blue skies – green – sunshine and a cover on our Tower Garden.

Yes – it was chilly – 30 degrees – frost – and a little wind – but no ice – snow and frigid cold!

I can bundle up and have no fear of slipping on ice – no snow shovel.

No scraping ice off of car – yes – it got cold – but not what they had all up and down the East Coast.

Green still here in the trees in the back yard – bird feeder and three Oleander bushes waiting for Spring.

Our family all had the snow and ice – back home in NVA.

We still were able to go out and about – what I love about being here – the SUNSHINE!

Most days are like this – blue skies and Sun.

And we can golf – as long as it is not windy!
Early morning frost – sunshine and blue skies.

Living on the borders of N.C. and S.C. – never thought we would end up here – is just warm enough

in the Winter to make it bearable for me – and yes – it gets hot in the summer –

but I much prefer that to ice and snow in the Spring and Fall back in NVA and WNY!

Winter marsh – clouds – sunshine
