Papa’s World – The day the SNOW came!

It started off like many other days in NVA-

Brambleton, Va. –

We were a couple miles away from the backside of the DULLES AIRPORT –

For Washington, D.C. in Loudoun County.

Be prepared –

a winter storm watch has been announced.

This was the view from the steps of our front porch home –

of the intersection.

We were prepared –

after all, we had spent the first 50 years of our lives –

living and coping with winter snowbelt storms in WNY and NWPA!

But – all of that did not compare to what was to come.

Our patio – is enclosed by the house on three sides –

and a fence on the outer side toward the street.

Many family times spent here –

Back in WNY – I had a van – with wide tires.

I would take the van –

and ride back and forth on the driveway –

Packing down the snow instead of paying someone to plow it!

Here it was different-

only the driveway was about two car lengths long!

I had my shovel and a large pushbroom.

Then it started to snow –

light at first –

Then it started to stick to the paved sidewalks and road.

It continued all day and into the night –

We took turns trying to keep ahead of it.

Here Sherry attempts to clear a path on the front sidewalk!

You can see ahead of her where I had managed a path to the road.

Early morning of the next day –

less than 24 hours after the start.

It had turned into a major snowstorm in NVA! and the East Coast.

It continued the next morning !

They were trying to plow –

and keep the roads open the next day-

but it continued to come down.

The open door is out to the back patio next to the garage and driveway.

The garage door – over 36 inches and still snowing!

Me digging outside by the back patio.

The weather alerts kept coming –

the storm was not over!

It was piling up – soon the snow banks would be taller than me!

The entrance to the patio from the kitchen –

Over waist deep –

Not going out there-

and we had an all-nighter coming up!

That night after 24 hours of snow –

A look at the patio,

That fence I could look over on my tip toes!

If you go back to the picture of looking outside at the patio before the storm from inside this window-

This is looking from the outside into the front living room!

We had over 48 inches of snow in less than a day and a half.

In all the years of living in the snow belts up North –

We had never experienced –

this amount in such a short period.

The official measurements came from the DULLES AIRPOT just a few miles away!

We sold that home in 2020 and moved to the border area of OIB- SUNSET BEACH-

Our winters here are much different – even though in early Feb. we experienced snow-

This is a rare event here.

But we did get three to five inches with a hard crust.

Everything lasted maybe 5 to 7 days!

And then a few days later after it was gone –

We had 80-plus degrees.

There is a saying down here –

“IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE WEATHER – WAIT FIVE MINUTES AND IT WILL CHANGE”!

LOL – BUT FOR ONE DAY IT SNOWED AND SNOWED –

give me that beach chair any day-

and I will try to get up – better-

than shoveling snow!!! LOL

Papa’s World – Being warm in the Sunbelt!

Even though the skies are gray –

storms are brewing –

windy – IT IS WARM!

I had open heart surgery ten-plus years ago –

And ever since then –

the cold has bothered me.

At night – I use an extra blanket –

When we walk in the Winter months –

I am bundled up with my jacket – scarf and gloves –

Even though everyone else isn’t.

So – I no longer want ice –

snow or cold

I will take warm – warm and warmer!

Visit NVA where we lived for over twenty years!

Yes – it was hot and muggy there –

but back on the East coast of N.C and S.C. –

with the breeze from the ocean –

IT WAS GREAT for me!

OIB from the Causeway Bridge over the ICW!

I lived for fifty-plus years in NWPA and WNY-

in the snow belts.

I shoveled my share of snow –

slipped and drove on ice –

Huddled up inside during a freezing Day-

on the end of bitter cold.

Worked outside –

navigated snow drifts –

I HAD ENOUGH OF THAT!

I do not own a snow shovel,

which is fine with me! LOL

In Fall and Winter and early Spring –

I am fine with some extra clothing –

that comes off when I get warmed up!

LIVING IN THE SUNBELT – my way of life now!

I am blessed to have been able to do this –

and my wife to share it with.

Papa’s World – the skies of a storm coming – beautiful!

I walked outside – we are staying with Tammy and Marcus.

They were on vacation – Sherry & I were alone.

Everywhere I looked to the sky –

was just awesome!

OUT FRONT FROM THE PORCH!

Sherry told me that she had a weather alert!

That is when I walked out onto the front porch.

I turned to the left and saw this after looking straight to the West.

Our new car parked alongside the road

as they were sealing the driveway the next day!

Then I walked to the edn of the porch and snapped this picture.

It was different in every direction!

I then went back inside and out the back door –

Again it was different!

There was yellow – orange – purple – blue – white – gray

and some deep pink!

The storm was suppose to start around 9 PM.

Flash flood alerts –

Stay off the roads –

High winds and take shelter!

The calm and beauty before the storm.

Later that night it hit –

Lightening – thunder and lots of rain.

I love a storm – and it will drum me to sleep!

And this one did!

Midnight – Sherry thought to wake me up and move the car.

The next day we were suppose to have the driveway sealed.

So – I had parked by the road and ditch.

She was worried the ditch would fill –

So – after trying to wake me up to no success

Off she went in the rain and moved the car back to the driveway!

She is a angel – me – for some reason I would not wake up!

We had FIVE INCHES OF RAIN IN THREE HOURS!

She had 18 alerts on road closings –

wash outs and rescues being taken – nine people!

I slept right through it!

The calm before the storm got me!

Always loved a good storm –

Next time I vow to be more alert!
