Papa’s World – In my senior year-car accident!

I was just 17 years old – my senior year in High School-

September of 1966!

The Friday before, I had played a football game –

My positions – left guard on offense and monster on defense-

(roving linebacker).

I had just eaten supper –

My mother had made homemade potato soup!

She was an excellent cook and baker!

I was going to drive toward the state line to meet up with my girlfriend-

And go someplace – I don’t remember where.

My ride was a SIMCA –

Imagine a squared-off Volkswagen!

Robin egg blue with a manual five-speed on the floor.

Getting it up to the speed limit was not easy!

The top speed was maybe 60 mph on the best days!

It was a square tin box on wheels!

Sitting in the driver’s seat, I almost could touch the passenger side door with my outstretched arm.

But – to me – it was easier than hitchhiking, which I had done numerous times-

Both during the day and at night!

I started the trip toward the NYS line, about four or five miles away, to where she lived.

On the outskirts of town by the Kendal Bridge-

A car coming toward me really fast went buzzing by!

I remember this because they were on the center line –

And in my mind, I still see the woman-

She was sitting with her feet up on the dashboard while her husband was driving!

I later found out they had gone through town and turned around by Burrs garage.

I still have my long-term memory and find that writing blogs is for me a training exercise –

In retaining that memory!

Eldred, Pa., in the 1900s – there is a tall white building in the upper center-

I lived just to the left, several houses back from that church.

Those hills were toward NYS –

And where would I have the accident!

I had run through all five gears and was doing 45 to 50 miles per hour.

There was a corner just before my girlfriend’s home –

And about 150 yards to her home.

I started to downshift –

And put my turn signal to turn left.

My intent was to turn left and park facing the opposite direction –

So when leaving, we would be heading back toward town.

I was in second gear –

And I had crossed the white line – no cars were coming towards me, and it was a good three-quarter mile straight away!

All of a sudden, from behind me came that car that had passed me going into town!

They came around that corner, and I was on the left lane, and it hit me –

The right fender of his car hit the door behind my seat!

That little car I drove had no seat belts.

His fender came through the door and hit the back of my seat.

The seat was pushed into the steering wheel-

Having no seat belts saved my life.

I was thrown across the gear shit – and my back was against tihe other passenger door.

My legs were still on the clutch and gas pedal

We went all the way across the lane –

Onto the berm and about 100 feet into the mailbox.

The windows exploded, and I was covered in glass.

I looked directly at them, and she still had her feet up on the dashboard.

My girlfriend’s mother came running across the road and opened the door that my back was against.

I somehow got my feet over the stick shift and out of the door.

I tried to stand, but my hips just sort of swayed sideways!

So I sat down in the seat and wondered –

“I passed that car- they were going really fast – they had gone through town –

and turned around and back – and somehow in the four miles caught me and –

slammed into me while I was in the other lane”?

They must have been going really fast!

The ambulance arrived, and I was taken to Olean General Hospital.

I could not stand or walk.

I had this pain in my lower belly –

They took X-rays –

My Pelvis was broken –

And the urethral tube from my bladder had been torn apart!

I was bleeding inside!

My thoughts after the accident.

They put a Catheter in –

Blood immediately filled the glass jug –

I was scared –

IV and blood were hooked up.

It ended up for 41 days!

I was put flat on a bed with traction under my hips-

Ropes along both legs and wrapped –

These ropes were attached to weights hanging from a contraption –

Rigged up over my bed.

I could be slightly elevated by the upper part of the bed.

I lay this way for 51 days!

I did not know if I would ever walk again.

I continued my studies for my senior year in that bed.

Being released in November.

I went home in a wheelchair.

During that time, I found out my girlfriend was pregnant.

We were married – I in a wheelchair.

My parents had a hospital bed put in the living room.

I slept there – she slept upstairs.

This is my eldest son, Troy, who was born after the accident in early January 1967.

Of all that happened, he became a bright star for me.

I was reclassified for the draft!

We were in the middle of “NAM”!

I could not walk, and no longer could I be drafted!

I was in a wheelchair for three months-

Then, on crutches, I had to learn to walk again.

Then, with a cane and I walked for graduation.

I am forever grateful for the support I had from loved ones.

All my school classmates who came to see me-

Some helped me in my lessons.

I graduated from H.S. – married with a son.

College was not an option,

but I was blessed in that neither was Vietnam!

Today I am fine –

But this memory lingers on as just like it were yesterday.

I can still see it in my mind.

Papa’s World – 1999 – we first saw it – 2019 – the last one “ROLLING THUNDER”

MIA – POW – AMERICAN FLAG

Memorial Day weekend – 1999 –

e had just agreed to a transfer to work in NVA –

the Three of us – Sherry – myself and our youngest daughter Tammy –

Had just come up on the street in D.C. at Foggy Bottom –

George Washington University –

we were going to tour Washington – when we heard the ROAR !

MOTOR CYCLES – a lot of motor cycles – what was going on ?

Thousands of Motorcycles

There were bikes everywhere – parked – every place you could fit one –

and flags – black leather – tattoo’s – noise – vendors –

As we walked down hill and closer to Constitution Avenue – the crowds were huge !

Our grand daughters – Ella and Maddy

2019 – Memorial Day weekend – 20 years to the day later –

we retraced those steps –

this time with our two oldest grand daughters – Ella & Maddy Myers.

Just across the 14 th. street bridge the Pentagon parking lot.

They had come to stay with us for a couple days –

these two laugh and giggle all the time –

but across the bridge – from the Pentagon – came the noise

The ROAR – thousands and thousands of bikes – riders – flags on the rear –

And lining the street – sometimes 10 deep –

the whole of Constitution Avenue – Tens of thousands of people !

We met up with family

We met up with part of our family who had come from afar – Pa. & N.C.-Va.

To see what is to be the LAST RIDE of

” ROLLING THUNDER ” !

It has gotten too costly – and I guess some ill will from the Pentagon –

Too bad as they are riding for our VETS – POW’S and MIA’S !

Ella- Sherry – Maddy and me

What we first saw 20 years ago – we were able to share with these two.

A beautiful day to walk around –

see DC as you never see it with Bikes everywhere !

And to share this with family !

Nathan – Mr. “B” – Lindsey from Pa.

Kristy & Casey from N.C.
Mia & Olivia from NC

We spent the day watching the ” ROAR” which went from Noon –

and was still going at 4:00 PM.

Cousins – with the Balsis and Jones family

Kyle and Bethany from Manassas Va. – their five children and a guest .

Casey and Tom- PICK A PAIR ! LOL
The RIDE
They parked everywhere they could find a space
Ella – Maddy and Sherry
Our oldest grand daughter Maddy – a American Elm tree planted in 1850
The Capital from the Mall

My happy place when we visit and walk DC – THE MALL !

It says it all

20 years we have been doing this –

bringing family – friends and sometimes just ourselves –

riding in on the Metro or driving in –

Wishing everyone a great Memorial day –

” ALL GAVE SOME – SOME GAVE ALL “

WHY WE ARE FREE

The “ROARING THUNDER ” was established for the VETS of the Vietnam War.

Today – it is a symbol for ALL VETS –

let us not forget those Vets –

And each day forward –

let us remember the NAM vets in a war no one wanted –

but they served –

They were not welcomed home –

politics has a way of doing that –

” ROLLING THUNDER ” was for them –

and my memories go back to that day in 1999 –

I am forever grateful for them –

for by the grace of God – it could of been me.

Sherry & Tom

I hope you enjoyed our little trip down memory lane –

many times we have stood right here.

Thank you –

Papa’s World – All gave some – Some gave ALL – THE WALL

Today – a emotional journey into the past –

THE VIETNAM MEMORIAL –

GOOD MORNING

Leaving the Lincoln Memorial and walking across the street –

past the little building selling items

in tribute to the WAR no one wanted !

Jo and Paul

The walk was quiet – people gathering – people taking pictures –

Sherry Jo Paul

We all had classmates on THE WALL –

a very divisive time in our young lives –

our middle to late teens –

being told that we would be OVER THERE in High School!

People gathered at THE WALL

My coach saying to us –

” YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE GOING ” !!!

Living that for five years –

But for the grace of God – go I !

When you gaze – when you search –

and then you see yourselves

gazing back – looking into your soul

And you know – for what reason –

They gave it up – and you shall never forget.

Papa’s World – Touring Washington DC.

GOOD MORNING !

The Silver line Metro – in one years time –

The new last stop will be 4 miles from our house

but until then – we must drive to Reston Va.

With no traffic – a twenty minute drive.

Before that – it was Falls Church being the closest stop.

Jo and Paul

This day our objective were to arrive in Foggy Bottom

In the midst of Geaorgetown University

Then walk down the hill to the Lincoln Memorial

It turned into a beautiful day –

Cloud cover – slight breeze – not too hot – a pleasant walk.

almost to the
Lincoln Memorial

In the twenty years we have lived here

we have made that walk a dozen times or more

The first time was with our daughter Tammy

We had come down to Va. from N.Y.S.

For the job interview for Sherry and myself

as we were transferring with in the company.

We wanted to move South and I had had it with my job

While walking this very same route

We were in the midst of thousands of motorcycles

Every square inch of green space were parked bikes of all kinds.

As we got closer we could hear THE ROAR !

We had by chance encountered our very first

” ROLLING THUNDER”

250,000 Motorcycles –

coming across the 14 th. street bridge

and right down Constitution Avenue !

With the Lincoln Memorial right there !

The Lincoln Memorial

Let Freedom Ring – Ride – ROAR !

That crossed my mind as we made our way to the steps

We have been doing this for twenty years –

we are blessed !

So we were not sure just how much or far they could walk

BUT THEY DID IT !
