Papa’s World – Riding the METRO’S SILVER LINE!

In October 2024 – we were in NVA at our daughter’s house-

We asked all three grandkids if they wanted to journey into D.C. –

on the METRO LINE!

Cassidy said no-

as she had cheerleading practice –

But Taylor and Bode were excited and –

we were off!

Here we just boarded the Silver Line in Ashburn –

About five miles from where we previously lived!

On our way,

we passed through the DULLES AIRPORT –

This was one of the stops.

So convenient if you are traveling by plane!

The grandkids were eying it all!

The ride in was a little over an hour long –

But so glad we did this as parking in D.C.-

was almost non-existent!

At each stop they could see where we were –

and then under the river!

We never had to depart –

except once when the bathroom was needed –

and we got right back on!

This section of the METRO was not open when we moved-

Although it had been built!

After the SILVER LINE METRO LINE ride –

Standing on the street of Washington, D.C. with Taylor – Sherry, and Bode!

Papa’s World – Random pictures and the History Museum.

Bode and Taylor at the History Museum in Washington, D.C.

We ventured by Metro into D.C.-

with the two of them –

We walked and walked –

Showing them the sights.

We did this while living nearby for twenty years –

with family and friends!

They were so excited –

and not once did they complain!

Bode was fascinated with life thousands of years ago.

He was full of questions-

and Taylor had most of the answers! LOL

These are some of the pictures Taylor took!

There is so much to see –

and little time to spend.

We need to go back for a week –

and take in something different each day.

This was such a learning experience for both of them!

Big sister-

little brother –

something they shall remember for a lifetime.

Papa’s World – In 1999 – we transferred to NVA!

It was time to move on – at 50 years old and soon to be 50 –

Sherry and I decided on new adventures

awaited us – not in Olean, N.Y., and at Dal Tile ( American Olean Tile) –

where we both worked –

She is the Logistics manager and I am the supervisor of Body Prep – Service departments!

She had gone as far as she could in a male-dominated world of manufacturing.

Both of us needed a change –

me – I was frustrated –

I needed to get to a better frame of mind –

Her – she was going to be stuck and overlooked!

So – after sifting through multiple in-company openings –

we choose the Northern Va. area!

We moved from a country county filled with farms – two lane roads – deer – cows – turkeys –

to TRAFFIC –

MILLIONS in population –

to right smack in the middle of Alexandria Va.

Washington D.C. and the infamous BELTWAY!

We lived in a condo in Old Town Alexandria for almost two months –

hoping I would not get lost as I traveled back and forth from work.

WOW – four to six lanes of traffic – one wrong turn –

which I did – brought me panic.

But – I made it home to that apartment.

The positive side – although my sense of direction leaves a lot to be desired –

I loved being able to walk the historic streets-

by the Potomac in Old Town!

I guess this two-month period was what we needed to adapt to CITY LIFE!

We both transferred within the company –

and that is now twenty-five years ago.

But it seems like only yesterday!

We started to search for a home –

PRICES WERE SHOCKING!

We bought our first townhouse in Fairfax – halfway for both of us to drive.

She had a store –

called a SALES SERVICE CENTER – in Dulles – right across from the airport!

Me – I was to stay in Alexandria at what was one of the largest SSCs in the country.

Close to the Springfield Metro.

Both of us had traffic – however,

my hours were changed to 5:00 am. to 2:00 pm.

Traffic for me at those hours was not that bad.

Sherry found the backroads to travel to her store –

which in two years she took from less than one million in sales to almost six million in sales!

Our townhouse was on Fountainside Drive –

3 miles to George Mason University and the same distance to the NRA building.

Before the construction build of the new FAIRFAX TOWN CENTER and the brand new WEGMANS –

we rode our bikes on trails in the woods of what would become those new areas!

We lived in this home that we paid nearly $80,000.00 more-

then we sold our four-bedroom colonial on 3/4 of an acre in Portville, N.Y.!

And we had about 1600 SF.

But – it was in an upcoming new development –

and we sold it and built our very first new home –

a 2400 SF. brick – attached townhouse on Ridgetop Commons –

in that forest, we rode our bikes in!

In three and one-half years we upgraded –

and we had become assimilated into city life!

Many times we drove into the Capital to park and walk the city!

But – we bought METRO passes and rode into D.C. on weekends to tour and see the sights.

We became official tour guides to friends and family –

often sitting on the capital lawn for the Memorial Day concerts –

and Fourth of July salutes televised

nationally for concerts on the mall!

We watched the 2000 election results and saw people partying in the streets –

it was an awesome time for two country folks from WNY!

In this case, it took a lot of understanding –

but in time – Debby and Tammy –

came to live in NVA –

bringing family and finding their own destinies –

If we had not transferred here –

there would be no Taylor – Cassidy and Bode-

as she found Marcus here.

There was Maddy but who knows about Ella and Sarah?

Our move had a profound outcome on our families and still does to this day.

PAPA’S WORLD – IN 1999 WE TRANSFERRED TO NORTHERN VA.

Papa’s World – Taking Maddy and Ella to Arlington Cemetary and then walking into D.C.

Ella – Maddy and Papa – waiting for the Metro to go to Arlington – this would be the beginning of our Washington, D.C. tour on foot.

Ella – Papa – Sherry and Maddy. We would get off at Arlington Cementary – tour all and see the changing of the guard.

At JFK Memorial with Robert E. Lee’s house in the background.

Maddy – Papa and Ella with a view of the D.C. area behind us – we would walk across the 14th. street bridge and begin our walking tour of D.C.

The granddaughters had always wanted to do this – and we said we would take them.

Ella and Maddy heading for the steps to the Lincoln Memorial – we did it all for the whole day –

catching the Metro back to our parking lot and car.

This I hope is a memory they shall always have,

Sherry – Papa – Ella and Maddy – soon Ella will be 20 and Maddy 23 – living life to the plus one day at a time.

Papa’s World – Walking among the Ghosts – Korea

Long known as THE FORGOTTEN WAR –

The Korean conflict war memorial

is to me – “WALKING AMONG THE GHOSTS ” of war.

GOOD MORNING

My brother in law Bill was in this war –

and not once did he ever talk to me about it !

The closest we came was him giving me his sleeping bag –

as a teenager who used it to sleep out on –

North Western chilly nights

in a little town of Eldred Pa.

Seeing the GHOSTS for the first time

The sight is becoming – the soldiers – silently walking –

through the shrubs – gray – white –

the effect is startling.

Paul Jo

One can almost feel the tension in the air –

the expected clash about to happen –

I often wonder what it would be like to be there –

not in Korea – but here –

on a dark silent night –

with mist swirling in from the Potomac !

Sherry – walking among the Ghosts
on the Korean War Memorial

That is the sense this brings to me –

in a War mostly forgotten

yet the vast numbers of loss and maimed

remain with us to this day.

Papa’s World – Union Station-Peaceful protests – White House

We ended our day in Congress – where we had to be searched –

pockets emptied – no phone for pictures

The whole Congress was rude.

We settled in for about 45 minutes – and there was to be a vote –

But – NO ONE on the floor paid any attention –

they were divided on the right side and the left side –

The entire congress did nothing but talk –

So loud we – in the balcony – could not hear what they were saying

on the loud speakers!

The Capital
where nothing gets done
and no one listens

I was disgusted at the whole thing and how they all acted.

All we could do was watch the electronic board to see the total of the votes.

and got off at the Smithstonian in the Mall.

We left the Mall behind and walked to the front of the White House

We had covered a lot that day

and decided to see the front and the back

But on our way we came across a very peaceful protest

in front of the EPA building

They were not yelling – they were respectful when we talked to them

Protesters
outside the EPA
Headquarters

Now – I can not understand why anyone would be against clean air

Withe clean air comes better gas mileage

The back of the White House
More peaceful protest
This one has been there
for the entire time we have
been in NVA

The one who was here first passed away several years ago

they have kept it here as each election

brings new Government

as a way to keep the power in the people

and a eye on what is going on.

Both Democrats and Republicans have seen this protest.
