Papa’s World – Living in the Carolinas!

BEACHES – WARMTH – BLUE SKIES and GOLF!

We made the move to eight miles to the border of S.C. – OIB – known as OCEAN ISLE BEACH!

Now in this expanse of eight to ten miles – in any direction except toward the ocean –

is about thirty golf courses!

Playing golf was one of the reasons we moved to Cameron Woods Community.

We both love to be out on the fairways and the trees and open air.

We purchased each year what is known as THE FIRST TEE CARD for $100.00 –

$90.00 if you buy it before Christmas each year.

On this card are 52 golf venues where you can make tee times –

but you can only make them sometimes 24 to 48 hours in advance and most are after twelve – noon!

We do not mind as that time most players want morning tee times-

thus it is not as crowded at 1:30 PM. Tee off!

So we play – mostly with our dear friends Buck and Cindy – once every week or two.

Other times – I have played with neighborhood friends –

and at times with my son-in-law when they visit.

There are times when our group of friends that we have known for years –

come to visit and we play guys vs gals and usually it ends up one stroke –

while we give them five strokes over eighteen holes.

Makes for a great afternoon – dinner and festive bantering!

We also chose this area because we are close to two beaches – here is the Sunset Beach Pier –

This is the beach I prefer to walk on as it is more level and easier for me to walk –

I have a sore hip joint – walking here in the surf is okay!

As you can see here – Sunset Beach at low tide is very wide – and not as rough as other beaches!

While I also am way past riding the waves – I do wade into knee-deep and that is enough for me!

Sunset Beach is known as its name suggests – brilliant SUNSETS!

A couple times a month they have live bands set up on the pier and everyone gathers in the sand

below for free concerts!

This is more of a residential beach and in less than fifteen minutes we are standing on the sand!

And then there is OCEAN ISLE BEACH – I like this beach because it has commercial places to eat and drink!

Also a very large open park with a covered stage for concerts – a mini golf course – and a playground with pickle ball courts – basketball – splash pool and various playground rides for kids!

Live free concerts begin at the end of May and run up past Labor Day!

Pelican Perch is one of my favorite bars and grills – my favorite draft is ‘RED OAK”!

There is also a second-level coffee shop and a wine and beer garden with appetizers!

Many surf shops and a community center with parking – a covered deck with picnic tables

and outdoor showers – and restrooms for the public.

We drive here often as in less than ten minutes we are standing on the beach –

we search for sea shells – sand dollars – starfish –

April is a big month to find Counch Shells!

Ocean Isle Beach pier – a lot of fishing from here – and you can see from the other pier on Sunset Beach-

it is rougher here!

We walk here also but it seems that my hip is more sore here than at Sunset Beach.

Both beaches have free parking for now – but both piers charge $10.00 to park in their enclosed lots

all day.

Living here near golf and beaches along with being warm in Spring and Fall is what we wanted.

Winter is bearable – no snow to shovel and hardly any ice – storms can be a problem but in four years we have survived that!

PAPA’S WORLD – LIVING IN THE CAROLINAS!

Papa’s World – saying goodbye to my HS friend Bob and then playing the second match with – Jim – Cindy and Buck

bThey had stored the RV in a campground four miles from the house – and for a week stayed with us.

Bob and Pam came to visit – we had planned these months in advance.

Pam went with Sherry to Tenn. for a health retreat while Bob stayed and then my friend Jim came-

we played golf – talked and they became friends.

Here we are saying goodbye as he prepares to pull out and meet Sherry and Pam.

It was a good week rekindling old memories.

Now it was show time in the second match scramble Cindy and I vs. Jim and Buck.

We played the previous day at Thistle – where after 18 holes they held a two-stroke advantage.

Tieing the front nine and they won the second nine 38 to 40.

Jim and Buck waiting for the green to clear.

This time we moved the scramble to Sandpiper – which is right next to Thisltle.

27 holes here and we played 18.

Cindy watched the ball when Buck and Jim hit.

We managed to tie the match up after the front nine – Cindy and I.

I had strained the tendon in my right arm ( it later turned all black and blue ) But I was still able to putt and hit selected shots.

If she hit a good shot – then we just played hers – if not – then I hit and if it was good we played mine.

BEEN THERE – DONE THAT! LOL
Jimmy – waiting for fairway to clear.
The second nine we not only had made up the two strokes from the day before – but we went ahead!
They saw that cart – we were on a roll!

It ended up with Cindy and I making up the two shots and winning the two-day scramble.

We missed Sherry and Pam – next time we will do a scramble with all the friends.

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – Playing Scottish Links course THISTLE with friends – Buck – Cindy and Jim.

THISTLE is one of the premier courses in our area – everyone wants to play – 27 holes!
Cindy teeing off on a par three.

It is a links course molded into deep sand traps and mounds with long seagrass.

The clubhouse is full of antique items straight from Scotland.

Even has one of OLD TOM MORRIS clubs in a display case.

We gathered together the four of us – Cindy and I vs. Jim and Buck!

They beat us by two strokes over 18 holes.

The second match is the next day at Sandpiper- another course next to THISTLE!

All of the cart paths on the THISTLE are wide concrete paths.

Buck teeing off.

It was an enjoyable afternoon with a lot of bantering going back and forth between Cindy and Jim!

Many stops at the bathrooms along the way!

Jimmy after hitting his shot.

The course is very challenging – water and sand traps – long seagrass.

Cindy checking yardage with Jim looking on!

Papa’s World – Golfing at Thistle – Calabash N.C.

We have now golfed our second course since we moved to S.C.

THISTLE A SCOTTISH THEMED COURSE WITH LOTS OF WATER

We had a chance to grab tee times at this sought after course.

The whole theme is of Scotland

with the club house and grounds

and the road onto and into the course.

This part of N.C. close to the ocean is rather flat

but they molded this course into bunkers

with six tee boxes on each hole!

I was impressed at just how much they changed the landscape.

Plus – there is a lot of water hazards here!

And something you do not see in Scotland – GATORS!

This big one was sunning itself on the back side

of a raised green – and from the fairway

you could not see it!

Good thing no had hit long

because as I walked back to line up my putt

there it was!

Sherry and Cindy also saw another one when then went to find a ball

next to a water hazard

and carefully got out of there!

It was a great course – and because of the tees we played

we avoided a lot of water where they were!

A look at one of the many many water hazards!
Gator laying on the bank sunning itself
Sherry hitting from the fairway
Cindy hitting from fairway – they both are never in trouble always down the middle
Climbing the bank to the elevated green
Getting ready to tee off
And the dawn breaking of the day we went golfing from our Lanai

We always have fun golfing with Cindy and Buck

now that we are down here – they live about 40 minutes away

so we make tee times to play

this being the fourth time we have played together

since we came down late September and stayed with them for 5 days!

Sherry getting ready to hit
