Papa’s World – healing – what you eat – is who you are.

It is really hard to maintain that habit –

There are so many distractions – so many smells –

Just out walking – the smells of early morning –

we live in a very diverse neighborhood –

and you can smell the cooking for meals as you walk.

And it is mouth watering !

With me – I have given up fast food – milk – ice cream – soda –

I try not to eat red meat –

I stick mainly to chicken and fish.

Small amounts and not everyday.

I like Tuna in a can – solid white packed in water.

I like raw carrots – radish – cuke’s and tomato’s.

I rarely eat processed meat or cheese.

My wife Sherry is a certified health coach –

she watches over me –

we try as often as we can to walk three miles

BUT NOW THE COLD IS HERE.

So- we walk the Mall or go to our health fitness center.

I could live in flip flops the rest of my life –

I am not a snow – ice or cold weather person.

Getting older – watching steps and stairs –

not walking on ice –

And smelling the food where ever you go.

IT CERTAINLY IS NOT EASY !

But – we have to do it !

We are aging – but our goal is to age healthy –

WE ARE WHAT WE EAT !

PAPA’S WORLD

WHERE FRIENDS MEET FAMILY

Papa’s World – Growing up Sherry – the young years!

She is the kindest person I know – always helping others – volunteering!

Sherry in the middle – Debbie to the left and Bonnie to the right – growing up in Mount Jewett, Pa.

The early years were in the Alleghany mountains of NWPA.

Near the Kinzua bridge – a little Swedish community.

Near Bradford, Pa. the early oil boom town of the 1800’s.

Sister Bonnie – mother Barb – sister Debbie and Sherry at their house outside of Mount Jewett.

Sherry – Barb – Bonnie and Debbie – they always had neat cars!

Sherry with her sisters and her father Bill – she reminds me of her father.

Sherry – her graduation from H.S. in 1967. Then onto Lab school in Philadelphia, Pa.

These are her early years – before I met her in 1979 – 1980. at work for A.O.T.C. in Olean, N.Y.

We were married on 6-25-82.

GROWING UP SHERRY – THE YOUNG YEARS – PAPA’S WORLD livinglofedoingitmyway.com

Papa’s World – when we were young – co-ed volleyball!

Sherry and I were married 6-25-82 –

both 33 years old – second marriage for both of us.

I had two sons and she had two daughters.

By that time – I had played basketball for a radio station

and was currently playing softball on two teams.

We decided – I would end the softball

and we would do something together.

There was a volleyball league in our community

It had SIXTEEN TEAMS!

And it was COED!

Now – this was suppose to be REC volleyball

but it wasn’t !

It was highly competitive

and if you were not on your guard

you could end up with a broken nose from a spiked ball.

There was a opening for a team

and we were put into contact with

Steve and Elaine – and the start of decades old friendship began.

They had been regular players in several leagues

and agreed to join us and Steve and Chris.

Teachers at the H.S.

Then we were contacted by Deb and Tim –

Husband and wife

who also wanted to play – and their old team disbanded.

Along came Mike – who also was looking for a team.

And that is how “THE BEACH CLUB” co-ed volleyball team formed!

Everyone but us were former players for years

and we fit right in.

Tom Sherry Steve S. Elaine S. Deb M. Steve H. Chris H. Mike C. missing Tim M.

We played as a team for several years – and were competitive from the start.

The league had ex college players –

and players who traveled on weekends to tournaments all over Pa. & NYS.

It was a very good league – and if you did not pay attention

you could end up getting hurt.

We finished 3rd. in the upper bracket a couple times

Out of 16 teams.

and won the lower bracket!

Not bad for 40 year old players!

When we were young – we palyed volleyball

and today – time hop brings up our team picture

I wish I had more pictures to share from that time

somewhere there are pictures of Sherry & I

playing volleyball for the American Olean Tile Co.

in the Corporate cup.

But that is another story for a different time.

Now – we golf –

Papa’s World – my life – memories – for my family.

All my life I have chosen to listen – to observe –

and take it all in – trying to see all sides.

My sister was a master at this!

My older brother often would listen

then in a very thoughtful way – comment.

I have tried to emulate both.

My mother Mary

Small in stature she was – but ruled with a iron will!

She was almost 98 years old when she passed away.

She had outlived her husband and second husband –

One of my brothers and my sister and brother in law

whom both lived right next door and took care of her.

She was a excellent cook as was my dad.

She was known for her baking bread – rolls and pies

all over town.

Often sending them to the doctor or other people in town.

My father every Friday night – we were Catholic –

No meat – would fry at the table on a electric grill –

Salmon patties – pan cakes and his favorite –

oyster soup! ( NOT MINE)

My father was a hunter – fisherman – sportsman.

He also graduated from High School in his Sophomore year

But My grandfather – who taught school for over 50 years

made him take his junior and senior years over again.

Saying he was too young to continue on!

They instilled in me what you read here.

I was like a second family to come along.

My sister was 15 years older and my brother 10 years old

when I was born.

Then along came my younger brother some 4 1/2 years later.

My dad passed at age 59.

But what I remember was that she was quiet – smiling –

but he always listened to her

and I most certainly did also.

Papa’s World – living healthy through my grand kids !

A few days ago –

I saw a post that stated ” GRAND PARENTS REMAIN YOUNG ” while watching their grand kids ! Boy – that was right on !

As most of you know – Sherry and I – pick up the twins from school -bring them home until their father picks up the youngest ( only boy grandchild) and then stops to pick up the twins !

Tammy opened her store almost one year ago – Kids consignment store – which is open every day except Monday 10 am. – 5 pm.

So – they needed help and we stepped in along with Marcus’s parents Jennie and Gehard. Since Bode’s preschool is close to them – they pick him up at 1:00 pm. and then Marcus goes after work to pick him up.

Now I must say – I really enjoy my little trip to the school – a little over one mile away. “PAPA – BE FIRST IN LINE ” is what they tell me. Well – even though I am in line one hour before they get out – most times I am second !!! That person must get there after breakfast !But – I use that time to listen and read !

Listening to my favorite radio station – not classic rock or country or rap or whatever else is out there – but ” SPORTS RADIO” 106.7 The Fan! I enjoy kicking back – using a couple wadded up blankets – for a pillow – and just spacing out listening to the talk show. This relaxes me and yes sometime I catch a quick 10 minute power nap ! When I was working – I used my lunch – one hour – every day to do the same thing ! Habits are hard to break !

But – I also listen to these two little girls – talking – conversing and sometimes a argument breaks out ! Now at that time I either look back and tell them to stop or I turn up the radio so loud – that they become silent ! LOL But I find they actually talk so much like adults – on their own daily lives.

Being with them makes me feel young at heart – relating to them – and oh my goodness – the questions are endless – and” WHY” is always asked.

But – then it gets adult like with the answer ” OF COURSE ” or ” ACTUALLY ” or “PAPA” ! I love that – and it makes you think when you answer the “WHY” !

” WHY ARE YOU NUMBER TWO AND NOT NUMBER ONE ” ? I get that one almost every week ! But – how can you argue the fact that life is about staying young even though it might only be a frame of mind !

Turn back time – can’t – capture thoughts words and deeds in pictures – you can – but staying young is a art that we all try to master.

Mine is a matter of mind over physical – thinking – acting and doing! I may not be number one in line but I think I try harder at being number two – after all – “PAPA – WHY AREN’T YOU NUMBER ONE ” keeps me on my toes each week to give a answer and that my friends keeps me young !
