Papa’s World – Living in the Carolinas!

BEACHES – WARMTH – BLUE SKIES and GOLF!

We made the move to eight miles to the border of S.C. – OIB – known as OCEAN ISLE BEACH!

Now in this expanse of eight to ten miles – in any direction except toward the ocean –

is about thirty golf courses!

Playing golf was one of the reasons we moved to Cameron Woods Community.

We both love to be out on the fairways and the trees and open air.

We purchased each year what is known as THE FIRST TEE CARD for $100.00 –

$90.00 if you buy it before Christmas each year.

On this card are 52 golf venues where you can make tee times –

but you can only make them sometimes 24 to 48 hours in advance and most are after twelve – noon!

We do not mind as that time most players want morning tee times-

thus it is not as crowded at 1:30 PM. Tee off!

So we play – mostly with our dear friends Buck and Cindy – once every week or two.

Other times – I have played with neighborhood friends –

and at times with my son-in-law when they visit.

There are times when our group of friends that we have known for years –

come to visit and we play guys vs gals and usually it ends up one stroke –

while we give them five strokes over eighteen holes.

Makes for a great afternoon – dinner and festive bantering!

We also chose this area because we are close to two beaches – here is the Sunset Beach Pier –

This is the beach I prefer to walk on as it is more level and easier for me to walk –

I have a sore hip joint – walking here in the surf is okay!

As you can see here – Sunset Beach at low tide is very wide – and not as rough as other beaches!

While I also am way past riding the waves – I do wade into knee-deep and that is enough for me!

Sunset Beach is known as its name suggests – brilliant SUNSETS!

A couple times a month they have live bands set up on the pier and everyone gathers in the sand

below for free concerts!

This is more of a residential beach and in less than fifteen minutes we are standing on the sand!

And then there is OCEAN ISLE BEACH – I like this beach because it has commercial places to eat and drink!

Also a very large open park with a covered stage for concerts – a mini golf course – and a playground with pickle ball courts – basketball – splash pool and various playground rides for kids!

Live free concerts begin at the end of May and run up past Labor Day!

Pelican Perch is one of my favorite bars and grills – my favorite draft is ‘RED OAK”!

There is also a second-level coffee shop and a wine and beer garden with appetizers!

Many surf shops and a community center with parking – a covered deck with picnic tables

and outdoor showers – and restrooms for the public.

We drive here often as in less than ten minutes we are standing on the beach –

we search for sea shells – sand dollars – starfish –

April is a big month to find Counch Shells!

Ocean Isle Beach pier – a lot of fishing from here – and you can see from the other pier on Sunset Beach-

it is rougher here!

We walk here also but it seems that my hip is more sore here than at Sunset Beach.

Both beaches have free parking for now – but both piers charge $10.00 to park in their enclosed lots

all day.

Living here near golf and beaches along with being warm in Spring and Fall is what we wanted.

Winter is bearable – no snow to shovel and hardly any ice – storms can be a problem but in four years we have survived that!

PAPA’S WORLD – LIVING IN THE CAROLINAS!

Papa’s World – Last day of golf with grade-school buddy – Sandpiper Golf Course.

We had planned to golf while they camped in their RV near us – and we did – THREE TIMES!

We both grew up in a little town in the Alleghany foothills in NWPA called Eldred!

Gradeschool – Jr. H.S. and H.S. – playing sports – staying over at each others houses.

Now – we plan to see one another once a year – friends for life.

I had told him there were gators and he had not seen one until we saw two of them!

Gators and Snakes I said – I fear the snakes more because you do not see them until you are almost on them!

We had a nice day – low to mid 60s and some clouds and sunshine – perfect for golfing!

Sandpiper Golf Course – a really nice lay out and well maintained – greens were really fast!

It was a good afternoon – we just about had the course to ourselves – no one pushing us and lady foursome a hole ahead of us.

PAPA’S WORLD – LAST DAY OF GOLFING WITH MY GRADE-SCHOOL BUDDY – SANDPIPER GOLF CLUB!

Papa’s World – Taking the ladies to the driving range!

Sherry and two other neighbor ladies wanted to hit balls so I took them.

MARCEA to the left and DIANE to the right.

The ladies will go to Sandpiper on Monday late afternoon for a golf lesson and nine holes of play!

So the two above wanted to hit some golf balls just to get their swings back.

We talked about it and I said I would drive them to the range!

I also hit a few down at the end.

I asked the owner if we could hit off the grass instead of the mat and he put us over on the side!

THIS IS ME – I lose a lot and find a few – but I just like being out there!

SHERRY – DIANE – MARCEA – I took the photo – they soon were hitting the balls – I gave some instructions –

and they all appreciated it – now if I could only follow my own advice! LOL

PAPA’S WORLD – TAKING THE LADIES TO THE DRIVING RANGE!

Papa’s World – saying goodbye to my HS friend Bob and then playing the second match with – Jim – Cindy and Buck

bThey had stored the RV in a campground four miles from the house – and for a week stayed with us.

Bob and Pam came to visit – we had planned these months in advance.

Pam went with Sherry to Tenn. for a health retreat while Bob stayed and then my friend Jim came-

we played golf – talked and they became friends.

Here we are saying goodbye as he prepares to pull out and meet Sherry and Pam.

It was a good week rekindling old memories.

Now it was show time in the second match scramble Cindy and I vs. Jim and Buck.

We played the previous day at Thistle – where after 18 holes they held a two-stroke advantage.

Tieing the front nine and they won the second nine 38 to 40.

Jim and Buck waiting for the green to clear.

This time we moved the scramble to Sandpiper – which is right next to Thisltle.

27 holes here and we played 18.

Cindy watched the ball when Buck and Jim hit.

We managed to tie the match up after the front nine – Cindy and I.

I had strained the tendon in my right arm ( it later turned all black and blue ) But I was still able to putt and hit selected shots.

If she hit a good shot – then we just played hers – if not – then I hit and if it was good we played mine.

BEEN THERE – DONE THAT! LOL
Jimmy – waiting for fairway to clear.
The second nine we not only had made up the two strokes from the day before – but we went ahead!
They saw that cart – we were on a roll!

It ended up with Cindy and I making up the two shots and winning the two-day scramble.

We missed Sherry and Pam – next time we will do a scramble with all the friends.

Papa’s World – Lasting Friendships – year blessed – all during a pandemic.

We spend time with family and friends – here are our oldest friends.

This is a stressful time this COVID!

But – we practice social distancing and quarantine – and test!

We make plans and also are sure of the above.

2020 brings a lot of smiles also.

Buck Cindy Dottie – speak no evil – see no evil and hear no evil!

Being with friends is special – you laugh – you talk – and you share sorrows.

Family is important to us all.

You SEE on Zooms –

You TALK on phones

You HEAR on both

You connect whenever you can and try to make plans.

Sometimes – COVID interferes

But you move on – test and return.

You greet each day with renewed hope that this will pass on – only to find it won’t!
Cindy Dottie Sherry

When it does become possible – you make the most of it!

2020 still has its fun times.

Papa’s World – golfing at Sandpiper Bay – dinner at Clark’s!

Buck ready to tee it off!

Our friends – Cindy and Buck

live about 40 miles from where we are staying.

And – for 25 years or so

have been coming to this area to play golf.

Buck told me he has played

on 85 different courses here in that time!

Cindy ripping a shot down the middle
Sherry hitting her second shot down the middle

We play a game every time we golf together

recently it has been guys vs girls!

And – I say no strokes

because it always ends up 1 or 2 strokes either way.

They both are always in the middle!

Buck goes first and depending where he goes – is what I do next.
With me – I never know – left – middle or right

Try as I might – it is a guess where I end up.

But – we always have fun – chirping back and forth Cindy and I!

I say NO STROKES – she says YES STROKES!

Last two times out – they have beaten us by 3 and then 2 strokes!

On the first one we gave strokes ( 3)

and the second time here – zero strokes.

They are just too good and never in trouble.

Always in the middle on every shot!

Down the middle!
Ended up on the green!

In a few weeks – our other friends will be joining us

and we once again will play girls vs. the guys.

The Browns – the McBrides and us.

Buck and Cindy at dinner at Clark’s

After golf at Sandpiper Bay – we met Sherry’s sister Debby

who drove down to spend 4 or 5 days with us.

We had dinner sitting outside by the marina

A view of the boats
Harbor dining

We had a excellent dinner

recapping stories since it has been a while since they have seen her sister.

Sherry Papa Buck Cindy Debby

It was the perfect end to a great day!

We lost – they won –

and until we play again

I always enjoy this – NO STROKES – laughing!

Papa Cindy Sherry Buck

They are just too good!
