Papa’s World – When little – riding my bike – Eldred, Pa.

Here is the birds-eye view of the town I grew up in – Little Eldred, Pa. in the enchanted mountains –

Of NWPA – along the Alleghany River.

In the far distance is the border of NYS and NWPA!

When early in my life –

I learned to ride my Red Flyer – from the Western Auto – on these streets.

Before that – I would roller skate to the Slavin’s garage/furniture store!

Here is that garage today – turned into one of the finest small-town WWII museums you will find!

Back in my early days – the bays of the garage – on the second bay in front of the brick wall –

sat a coke machine.

Jack – who worked there – sometimes bought me a glass of Coke pop from that machine!

My parents would never let me skate beyond this garage – and I would race back and forth –

from my North Main Street home – all the way up to the Eldred sawmill –

which made Louisville Slugger Baseball bats!

This above was the Frisbee Insurance office – Don owned it and would send me a birthday card

every year as it was his birthday also.

In the back was the Penn Electric office where a parking area for their trucks to fix electric lines.

This has all become connected to the furniture store and is part of the WWII museum-

and on the side toward the town – a full-size Army Tank from WWII – bursts through the wall.

Many tour buses make this a must-stop – bringing our little town on the map!

I spent my entire youth here- until I was thirty years old before moving on.

Riding my bike daily to the ballpark – thinking back now – I wonder what happened to that bike?

It was and still is a small – Mayberry type town –

You know everyone and they know you!

Up Barden Brook just outside town – is where the entire family I grew up with is buried.

Just past the first tombstones on the right – my father mother and younger brother now rest.

Along with my mother’s sister and her family.

On the left side is my older brother – his wife – my sister – her husband and two of their children.

Their third child and my niece still live in their house –

and my great niece –

her son now is in the service

and she lives in the house I grew up in.

My other great niece-

and her family lives in Portville.

My two sons still live in the area and nearby.

I also have aunts – uncles, and cousins who are buried here,

and a sister I never knew –

who died at birth five years before me-

is somewhere at the top of the cemetery buried.

It was never talked about

and I found out through my brother before he passed away.

I was raised a couple houses before that tall pine tree at the top of the picture and after H.S. –

I rented an apartment in the tall brick building next to the post office where the flag flies –

above the Western Auto for five years.

This is the main street of Eldred, Pa. where I roamed as a child.

SMALL TOWN USA – I skated and rode a bike here in my early youth.

PAPA’S WORLD – LIVINGLIFEDOINGITMYWAY.BLOG – WHEN LITTLE – RIDING MY BIKE – ELDRED, PA.

Papa’s World – growing up – ELDRED PA.

Sitting on the front porch of North Main Street –

It was a wide and deep porch –

The kind to sit through a rain storm –

and not get wet !

GOOD MORNING
Welcome to Papa’s World

I guess that is why now when I look at houses –

The very first TWO THINGS I look at are –

Front porches and screened in back three seasons rooms with views !

My childhood had the first but not the last !

Memories – some you just can not duplicate

My grand ma – siting out there on her lap –

I somehow do remember that –

which would make me 3 or 4 years old.

Roller skates – the kind that had a key –

I would strap them on and down the street I would go.

The street on both sides was lined with huge old trees –

The kind that six kids holding hands could not encircle the trunks !

Much – much bigger than this one

The roots had made the side walks uneven –

and to navigate them did not seem to slow me down !

I would turn around at Slavins – furniture store –

Back then it was also a service station –

And I remember Jack – he worked there.

There was a Coke machine that sat outside between the bays

Sometimes he would buy me a coke that came in a glass bottle !

Main Street in the late 1800’s

I lived all the way to the top of this old picture on the left –

some of those buildings still existed when i was growingup

And a few are still there today.

You can see the beginning of those trees even back then.

Then – I got my bicycle –

A red WESTERN FLYER !

The mountains or hills where I lived

That bike – I had those streamers coming out of the rubber handle grips

And a clothes pin with a card on the spokes –

both front and back.

I rode it everywhere – to the park –

across the tracks –

Up Barden Brook –

And just making it home when the street lights came on !

The streets I rode on

The park – my second home away –

base ball diamond – tennis and basketball courts –

But – the outfield of grass –

beneath the huge telephone poles with lights on them !

Where we choose up teams

and played football for hours !

Back home playing golf in the mountains – hills

Part two coming

Papa’s World – It’s Christmas when friends visit!

The THREE – when they get together – laughs – cheers and fun!

Sherry – Dottie – Cindy – seems like friends for most of their adult lives!

Well – since 1982 for Dottie when Sherry and I married –

and maybe four years later when we moved next door to Cindy!

I mean this was it! Around that time! LOL!

We decided to all get together – after practicing social distancing –

No exposure to Covid -19 –

and they would all stay with us at our new residence

in the condo we were renting!

Cindy Jim Buck Dottie Sherry & Papa

The plan was cards – golf – a few drinks and eat out!

Now – I did do this when I was young – but that was a long time ago – not ever getting on something that has wheels beneath my feet again!

We made tee times twice at different courses.

And – once again it would be a scramble

guys vs gals and handicapped!

After golf – a dinner at Local on the Water

alongside the ICW in North Myrtle Beach!

Results of day one golf – guys by one stroke!

Of course we have fun – play ground swings and all!

The TREE MUSKETEERS!

This was on Saturday – after golfing The Valley at Eastport

in North Myrtle Beach!

Sunday was not a day of rest – for we had a game to watch!

The BUFFALO BILLS!

We would go to Barefoot Landing –

to WILD WINGS – and they put the game on two TV’S

so we could watch from both sides of the table!

Of couse – we watched the whole game and three of the employees

were from the little town we lived in – Portville N.Y. !

It is indeed a small world!

We walked the beach every day – showing them the gated community

and then main street of North Myrtle Beach!

They even beat us on the swings – 2 to 1!

Then it was the dawning of the third day –

our final golf contest at Oyster Bay!

One couple would leave after dinner

the other in the morning

final score – gals by one after the handicap!
