Papa’s World – weekend ? In retirement you count the days by Garbage !

I never imagined – back when – as I neared retirement – I would sometimes not remember what day of the week it was ! Nor – would I ever wonder – with the hours of each day – “HOW DID I EVER FIND TIME TO WORK”?

You want to stay Young ? You want to stay active ? To do that – at least I find – the way I remember – is that Monday night is put out the GARBAGE – and pick up is Tuesday ! Now – that I remember for some reason. Also – I know it is Monday – because that is the day Tammy – our daughter – closes her store up , Kids 529 Consignment shop ! So – she does not work that day – and in the school year – I do not pick up the twins from school.

Bode – Cassidy and Taylor- Tammy & Marcus little ones.

The rest of the week – each day – I go and wait in a car line to pick up the girls – and I get there early – so I am usually second in line – and the line when school is out is about 70 or more cars ! So – I am prepared – I take my water -maybe a snack- a pillow – and leave the car on – it is a Hybrid so it mostly runs on the battery. I kick the seat back and turn my favorite radio show on – 106.7 – the Sports radio show that covers the D.C. area.

Sometimes I even drift off for a power nap!

Cassidy – Bode & Taylor 8 – 4 – 8 years old.

That takes me up to Tuesday – garbage day and pick up the girls day. Wednesday is take the twins to choir day – and meet Granny -( Jennie )- Marcus mother – who picks up Bode every day from preschool.

She takes him home and when Marcus is done – he picks him up and then will come to our house and pick up the twins.

But – Wednesday is church choir and all three sing – even Bode who can not read but will memorize the words and they are good singers.

We now have covered Monday thru Wednesday . Thursday – I start preparing again for garbage day – but also recycle day – by setting everything out for pick up on Friday !

At National Harbor – Washington D.C. Sherry’s shirt says it all!

There are also days that we will journey into D.C. for special trips – taking all the grand kids – we took the two oldest – Maddy and Ella – and got off at Arlington – took in the Tomb of the Unknown soldier and then walked across the 14 th. street bridge and spent the day at all the memorials – walking the Mall and having lunch. We walked miles that day and they loved it.

So – that leaves Friday – the day the GARBAGE & RECYCLES are picked up. I count the days by that format – very seldom do I know the exact date – I can look at the top of the paper – or my phone.

On Oahu – North Shore NO CARES – NO WORRIES #livinglifetotheplus

But to be perfectly honest with you – being retired – it does not really matter – I also count down days by what we have scheduled coming up ! Yes -we PLAN- put it down in writing – search and research – add names of visitors to come – the dates and what we are going to do. Some people can not do that for whatever reason – but not us – WE DO IT! Such as so goes our life – we live life to the plus one day at a time – but we know what is ahead – after all – for us – that is part of the excitement – just like little kids – “HOW MANY SLEEPS ARE LEFT PAPA ” ?

And then the early morning comes and you head out – all part of that special time – now I look back – and I wonder – JUST HOW DID I FIND TIME TO WORK ?

RETIREMENT – YOU COUNT THE DAYS BY GARBAGE – the weekends – well they are just another day -most times you just do not care !

Papa’s World – Past memories in pictures.

Several years ago – we along with our friends –

Buck and Cindy McBride-

Did a tour of the New England States.

We flew into Boston and toured Mass. – New Hampshire and Maine.

While in Boston we took a bus tour –

And ended up in the “CHEERS” bar.

Then – we went to Portsmouth, New Hampshire-

And visited “STRAWBERRY BANKE”-

And ended up in Salem.

Our tour also went to Bangor, which is far north of Maine.

We drove up Cadillac Mountain –

And we stayed almost a week at OLD ORCHARD BEACH in a condo.

PAST MEMORIES IN PICTURES!

Mount Nebo Lutheran Church – just outside of Mount Jewett, Pa.

This is the church of Sherry’s ancestors –

Built by Swedes in the 1800s.

Almost all of her family ancestors are buried here.

We have a lot here also –

But have decided it to be too far to go.

So – we have a vault at our new church –

St. Luke Lutheran Chruch –

Just five miles plus from our home.

The Columbarium where we will be interred – after cremation –

Sits in a setting behind St. Luke’s.

Our names are already on the plaque there.

This church is still in use and has several services throughout the year.

It is a replicate of a EIGHT SIDED CHURCH in Sweden –

PAST MEMORIES IN PICTURES!

LOL, some smiles for today!

We dressed up for Halloween a long time ago.

What was I thinking! LOL

Some more smiles!

The day Sherry retired there was a celebration with the folks she worked with.

She retired early to get out of the rat race and driving –

In the Washington area and the Beltway.

Stress – crazy drivers-

It was time after 32 years.

Her territory was NVA – District of Columbia and Northern W.V.

A celebration by her peers after a very successful career.

PAST MEMORIES IN PICTURES!

We both are now retired

and living near the coast in N.C. – OIB.

Our dreams have come true.

Papa’s World – Retirement – family and friends!

In Cameron Woods Community –

We have made new friends!

Marcea and Bill –

Ken and Marylou-

Diane and Steve ( who are from where we lived in WNY)

Fun times and looking forward to more of the same!

Where we chose to live –

Near the beaches –

On the border of N.C. and S.C.

In the winter – we can survive with no snow or ice- most of the time.

And – we can walk the beach anytime we choose.

We are close to old friends – three couples!

Our enclosed Lanai is a haven for our plants and flowers!

We could not do thus BACK in NVA!

This plant belonged to Sherry’s mother – Barb – and reminds us of her every day – GIGI!

Our lemon tree – who would have thought!!!!

Small things make us happy!

Now – we get to spend time with two couples who have been our close friends for over forty years!

Golfing – singing – lifting a few drinks and laughing!

So many times we have been together that it ends up like this!

Now – we all live in the state of N.C.

and we all are from back in WNY and close to NWPA!

Friends are forever and more!

My oldest buddy from grade school – Bob and his wife Pam

We now see them every year – past six years –

when they stop with their RV in their sixth year of retirement.

Friends are special parts of our life together.

Family from back in NVA-

While we left them to move South –

They come down and we go back to NVA!

Family from back where we grew up in NWPA!

Now that her mother has passed away – we do not get there as often as we would like!

But – they have been down a couple times and we hope for them to be here this summer.

Sherry and her sisters!

Bonnie on the left –

Still lives next door to where they were raised.

Debby on the right lives one mile from us in Cameron Woods Community.

Family – hoping that Bonnie can sometime in the future make it down.

When we do go back to NWPA-

We will see her and her family and my sons and their wife-partner!

Sunset Beach and in the upper far right corner – Ocean Isle Beach.

We are here because of choice.

We are happy in retirement –

With family – friends and our life here.

Papa’s World – Our life in the Carolinas!

In 2020 –

we moved from NVA to the border of N.C. and S.C.-

Although we live on the N.C. side.

We can be in North Myrtle Beach –

and all the tourist attractions in thirty minutes!

We wanted that avenue to choose if we decided to see –

the shows – attractions yet be near the beach.

It was not as expensive 16 miles away in N.C.

We could build a new home for what it costs without renovations in the NMB area!

This is the house we had built in Camero Woods Community –

in Ocean Isle Beach.

1910 SF. One level – three bedrooms – two baths –

an office with French doors.

A dining area and a kitchen –

living room – a sunroom – a laundry –

An enclosed lanai and an outdoor patio.

And a covered-shaded front porch-

with a two-car garage and finished-off storage space above the garage!

A brand new neighborhood –

with a community center – pool and pickleball courts.

Here – we are two miles to gas –

four miles to two grocery stores and a third another two miles.

Two beaches – one four miles-

and the second six miles.

Big box store shopping – eight miles.

Scores of waterfront dining!

We have a SOLO STOVE firepit in the backyard!

We can walk the beaches – watching storms come in!

Walking the beach in the moonlight!

Our life here is far different than anywhere we have lived.

We have close friends –

within five to forty minutes.

And we can golf –

select from thirty close courses or dozens farther away.

Sherry above

we both wanted to be able to afford golf and here we are-

with the FIRST TEE GOLF CARD or just LOCAL RATES!

Living in the Carolinas –

I never thought this would become a reality –

However – 401K went down-

but the house went up –

SO WE SOLD – almost everything –

and moved to a warmer climate for our senior years.

CAROLINA FRONT PORCH LIVING!

All year –

no snow – ice –

some cooler weather which I can dress for.

This is the WHY we moved here –

Thanks for reading PAPA’S WORLD

OUR LIFE IN THE CAROLINAS!

Papa’s World – We move to Brambleton!

This is the second home we built and moved into!

Situated on a corner lot – two stories – almost 3200 SF.

A front porch with a second-story balcony off a guest bedroom.

The house was in a horseshoe shape –

and the middle of the horseshoe was a 400 SF. enclosed patio,

Very private with a tall fence.

The closed-in patio has two entrances into the house.

When we first moved here – there was one H.S.

After 14 1/2 years – we sold the forever house – they were just opening the 4th. H.S.

We had grown with the community –

watching street after street being built –

and now – after we have left –

It still is growing and building.

It was during that time that Tammy had twin girls –

although not identical – in many ways, they are the same.

Cassidy on the left and Taylor on the right.

Today they are 14 years old –

Taylor rides horses and Cassidy does gymnastics.

Both sing and dance in plays –

and all three – Bode who is 10 – sing at church!

Our home here was to be a forever retirement home –

But the stock market went down –

and the home values went up!

We decided to sell and see where it took us.

We stayed with family members through the summer –

and into the school year-

At that time we decided to go SOUTH!

And it was to S.C. North Myrtle Beach!

Here we stayed in a lakefront condo for nine months –

And we built our THIRD new home!

This time 16 miles to the North in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

In a place called CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY!

Brambleton, Va. started out as our forever retirement home-

But economics proved otherwise.

It was a beautiful home inside as well as outside-

We met many memorable people here –

We had 15 miles of walking trails and they added more since we left.

Loudoun County is the highest per Capita county in the country.

MEMORIES always will be cherished there –

But – now we are living our dream-

Near the beaches and golfing capital of the country.

Thanks for reading Papa’s World – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Soon to be here in another blog – We build our THIRD new home-

IN CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY – OCEAN ISLE BEACH – N.C.

Papa’s World – “I WAKE UP IN THE MORNING-

“I wake up in the morning –

with NOTHING to do –

AND IT TAKES ME ALL DAY TO DO IT!!”

How many times since I have been retired have I been asked –

“What have you been up to”?

When I worked I took a vacation day –

mostly to mow my lawn!

It was relaxing for me –

just my ride mower – trimer – and me.

We had a three-quarter acre lot –

It would take 2 to 3 hours to mow –

weed whack and trim.

And I loved it!

Later – after we moved –

my yard work could be all done in forty-five minutes!

But – it was then –

I had to spend the majority of my time working!

I enjoy walking around and finding little things to do –

or turn on the TV-

and watch golf or some ball game.

Taking little trips with my wife for shopping –

She goes to the outlet-

and I buy a cup of coffee,

and people watch while she shops!

We make runs to volunteer –

tend to the flowers –

I no longer mow or trim the grass –

I just watch it grow!!!!!!! LOL

Sometimes we find a spot for a light lunch –

and watch the boats –

Other times we golf with friends-

or go and visit friends.

We are close to big box stores –

The beach is ten minutes –

To me –

it fulfills my retirement life.

“I WAKE UP IN THE MORNING-

I have a calendar –

where I write down –

what we have scheduled to do.

We take trips back to NVA to see family.

RETIREMENT –

may mean many different things to all people –

BUT TO ME IT MEANS

“With NOTHING to do –

That I get to choose each day –

what I want to do –

not a job to perform for a living!

“AND IT TAKES ME ALL DAY TO DO IT”!!!!!

PAPA’S WORLD – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – Thoughts – Kindness – Laughs!

In our lives today – we have calendars to look at in the morning to see what lies ahead!

I am often asked by friends “What have you been up to”?

That question always leaves me blanked-

as every day seems to hold one thing or another –

that we do!

Running errands to the stores –

getting gas for the car – inspections, and maintenance.

Oil changes – tire rotations –

walking the yard looking for anything that doesn’t belong there.

It is the little things that take up our time –

And of course, a walk thrown in for good measure!

BEING BUSY without knowing the answer to that question –

Well – that is what I believe living as a Senior-

in our Golden Years is all about!

In our Community Center –

sits a plastic tub!

This is a collection tub for food to be taken to the local food pantry!

Sherry and I volunteer to gather this up when full –

and deliver it to the local food bank.

It takes about fifteen minutes total to collect –

drive and unload.

Sometimes it is open –

and we take it inside –

where it is weighed –

and recorded as being from Cameron Woods Community.

Other times – no one is there –

so we offload into a storage locker that has a journal –

where we record the number of bags-

and Cameron Woods Community!

We volunteer to do this as we also volunteer at the assisted living nearby-

To keep the library organized

-and Sherry does other things to assist in the residents day to day activities!

I do most of the driving –

and before we retired she did the driving!

So goes a day in retirement for Seniors!

Sherry has a shirt that says “BE KIND TODAY”!

Those who know her –

know that this is who she is.

Always helping out –

always sending a card

( which she makes herself)

We watch houses in our neighborhood for those who are part-time.

We dog sit – we water plants – we help others!

Cameron Woods is that type of neighborhood!

LIVING LIFE TO THE PLUS – ONE DAY AT A TIME!

My hope for today’s blog is to bring a little bit of laughter –

Good thoughts –

And Happiness to each and every one of you!

Volunteering for walking to look for Turtle nests while also picking up trash on OIB!

PAPA’S WORLD – THOUGHTS – KINDNESS – LAUGHS!!!!!!! livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – Some GOOD THOUGHTS!

LOL! Some humor to start the day off!

Getting older each day –

requires stress relief from some funny sayings!

But – also –

glancing outside at the first rays of the Sun-

Living here in the South-

mostly is shorts and tee-shirt kind of weather.

Which – I might say –

goes a long way in setting the day ahead for me.

I glance at my calendar –

This is the only way I have to remember –

what is in store for the day!

Other than every Tuesday gather the garbage –

and get it ready to set out that night –

for pickup sometime on Wednesday!

On this day in question –

my duty is driving the wife to an appointment.

Funny how small things in life become

‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING TODAY”?

And the thought crosses my mind every time I am asked-

“WHAT DO YOU DO ALL DAY IN RETIREMENT”?

Well – I answer –

“I REALLY DO NOT HOW I FOUND TIME TO WORK “!

TRASH DAY – just another sample of keeping busy in retirement –

Keeping an eye on the gas tank-

and the prices go up and down –

Knowing where to buy that next tank of gas!

Muldane as it is –

retirement has changed my outlook on life as a Senior!

I find myself waiting for thunder and rainstorms –

To enjoy the noise of nature-

and the after –

of the noise from the woods –

frogs and other insects making loud noises.

Isn’t retirement relaxing?

It is for me –

doing what I want to do –

Not what that job required.

Every day is different –

that is why I have a calendar on my desk.

Time to go and get dressed –

time to have my morning breakfast shake.

My wife is up –

and make the bed.

Check the flowers outside –

did the deer eat them?

Look at the trees blooming as in Crepe Myrtles –

Funny how different colors bloom later than others!

All these questions and thoughts –

“HOW DID I EVER WORK FOR 48 1/2 YEARS?

This is the GOOD THOUGHTS –

of retirement for me!

I hope today starts your day with livinglifedoingitmyway.blog day!

Papa’s World – when my World was young !

In a small town – far away –

40 years ago – I played softball !

GOOD MORNING

I graduated and went to work right away for Olean Tile Company –

That was in June of 1967 .

I did not have the chance to go on to college.

Those were tough times –

I had spent 51 days in the hospital my senior year – car accident.

I know this all so well

But I recovered – and a little later –

started playing sports again.

First – it was for a radio station – basketball –

playing alumni of schools – teachers – varsity clubs.

Traveling WNY & WPA.

Then – it was softball –

Around that time

And then it was on to softball –

in a league – in NWPA .

There were a bunch of us –

and I was nearing 30 –

which made me the oldest.

By about three years and more.

Later – in my mid 30’s – I moved onto volleyball –

In a 16 team league and tournaments.

But – this past weekend –

to my surprise –

at a birthday party in Va. Beach –

It once again came all together –

Tom – Paul – Leo – Les – Jim

REUNITED after almost 40 years !

Five old friends – five old softball players

From our team in a small town far – far away !

It was fun recalling of years gone by

The memories – all so long ago –

All are retired now except Jim –

And in a few years – he will be also.

70 years of age now –

and walking is now my sport along with a little golf.

Jim and Les

Talking – remembering –

Paul & Jim

Still close friends after all those years.

Back when this was true

It was a surprise – we got the picture –

All from a small town in NWPA

Meeting once again in Va.Beach –

It happens

Thank you for reading Papa’s World –

Papa’s World – Early times – places – pictures!

I remember the early days of golfing with Sherry!

But – she always hit the ball down the middle – me – not so much! LOL

I had a slice that made a right turn – around trees!

Those days were filled with laughter with our close friends the McBrides –

Buck golfed but Cindy didn’t!

Sherry and Cindy made fun of us for using the ball washer to clean the ball.

They would wear mittens with no fingers and laugh at us!

Those were the days of is – Buck and myself – “TEACHING” them to golf!

Today – in a scramble – us vs. them – they will beat “US”!

The early years are gone replaced by sighting the distance to the flag and selecting the ‘RIGHT” club!

I just grab the one I hit the best and go at it! LOL!

Those early years have turned into “US” years –

still playing with the McBrides but also going out by ourselves –

Our dream of living where we do is a reality –

Being together – sharing sun-fun and golf one day at a time!

While living in NVA – for about 20 years – we became baseball fans and attended many games –

We would drive into D.C. or go to the Metro – fifteen minutes away –

And ride it to the stop just a block or so from the stadium.

OUR PLACE IN THE SUN!

Beer – peanuts and hot dogs –

Some people think watching baseball is like watching “PAINT DRY”! LOL

But – we were there during the 2019 season and the WORLD SERIES run-

and the years running up to that magical year!

“TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME” still rings in my mind!

A picture of the early years back in NVA!

Cassidy and Taylor – now 14 years old – are here – The Brambleton town center –

most likely between 2 and 3!

Between houses for a year – they came and lived with us –

One day – I could not find them in the house-

the downstairs half-bath door was shut!

I knocked and they both said in unison – “HERE”! LOL

They had gone in and shut the door and set up the house with their dolls and toys!

That is an early memory I shall always carry with me!

So sweet and innocent – the early days of being close as twins –

having each other to play with –

I wish that could continue but growing up they had separate interests-

Taylor – riding horses and working in the barn and stalls!

Cassidy – gymnastics – arts and crafts and plays!

Both play the violin – both sing and both are different yet the same!

THE EARLY YEARS – MEMORIES IN PICTURES!

Thank you for reading PAPA’S WORLD – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

PAPA’S WORLD – EARLY TIMES – PLACES and PICTURES!

Sarah – Cassidy and Sherry – MORMOR!

Papa’s World – Family times and RAINBOWS!

Our life and times are defined by our FAMILY TIMES!

We try to incorporate as much family into our life as possible given how far away we are!

Both my sons have visited and hoping they come back down this year –

although a very long drive – so many things we want to show them!

Our daughters have been here more often mainly because it is half the distance that the boys have to travel.

We are in contact with all of them and the grandkids!

Ella will be a senior in college this year and will play her last season of soccer for Randolf College!

We have plans to attend her senior game with family!

We usually all rent an Airbnb and get together for that game.

Family events also play into our lives – and we return for them.

Time here seems to be so fast from day to day.

Not like it did when we worked.

Someone asked me the other day –

“What have you been doing?”

I honestly struggled to answer that because I have said –

“I DON’T KNOW HOW I FOUND TIME TO WORK”!

What is nice is that we stay busy all be it for different reasons.

Not having to watch the clock to quitting time seems to take all the stress out of TIME!

It is nice to do what you want to do – even a trip to the store is to me an adventure –

I do not have to do it if I choose not to – but I can do it the next day.

I do most of the driving these days – except on long trips and then we switch on and off.

There is so much going on here – think of your week’s vacation you have taken to the beach!

With us – We never have to feel we have to leave – we live here –

we can watch families come and go –

and we are here to watch the next weekly families move in!

That to me is living what I always dreamed of doing!

The RAINBOWS of our life – well they keep on coming –

The THUNDERSTORMS are here also –

but we tend to just sit back and wait for the RAINBOW to appear once again.

Thanks for reading PAPA’S WORLD – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

PAPA’S WORLD – FAMILY TIMES AND RAINBOWS!

Papa’s World – Our “FOREVER” house in Brambleton!

Our “FOREVER” house in Brambleton, Va. sits on a corner lot – with 3200 SF. on two levels!

This was the second home we had built –

and we thought would be the home we would stay retired in!

After retirement – I spent many a morning sitting here on the front porch until the afternoon hot sun moved me onto the patio.

It was from here that Sherry and I took our first of 10,000 daily steps.

When we finally moved out in 2020 – there were over FIFTHTEEN MILES of walking trails!

We could walk all week and never walk twice on one trail!

We planted all that you see to come back each year.

We put in three Crepe Myrtles – and I mowed and trimmed this by myself after my heart attack!

Here is the side and rear of the horse shoe-shaped house –

the middle was the enclosed courtyard – we had slate put down –

and this area was four hundred and forty square feet.

No one could see in and there were two entrances from the house.

We had two tower gardens here and a BBQ and table and chairs.

Also a glider and two comfy chairs!

The enclosed patio with slate floor – this would be in the shade almost the entire day from the trees planted by the developer.

The gate opened up on the side yard where we had yearly wild strawberries growing!

The twin girls would sit out there and pick and eat!

I really miss this and Sherry chose to sit here instead of on the front porch!

The view looking back from the fence to the kitchen door straight ahead and to the right –

the door which we did not use – leading into the family room.

You could find shade out here all day long!

The door out to the patio off the kitchen – we had granite everywhere.

Many grandkids sat here to snack or craft!

Where the lights hang down – I put them in – is the breakfast table.

There were 34 windows in total in the entire house!

We ate most of our meals here but we also had a formal dining room!

Beyond the hanging lights is the family room with a fireplace.

Many winter days I sat by the warm fireplace.

The family room – to the right is the entrance to the side patio which I put in -not the door but the

patio itself. We also had a Tower Garden here on this side of the house which got the morning sun!

The fireplace and chair that I sat in winter time!

Looking at the breakfast table and the kitchen – beyond is the staircase and the way to the second floor.

We sold over 95 % of the furnishings to the people who purchased the house!

The wood floors were all Bamboo!

Another view of the family room – my watching TV spot was to the far right of the leather couch!

You could sit five here and have room – all the little ones could sit here with us to watch a movie!

The front door and beyond the front porch where I would sit and say hello to the walkers

and bikes going by each day.

To the left is the formal living room – all windows on two sides –

one to the front porch and the other looking out over the enclosed patio.

We would open Christmas packages sometimes here with the families!

The dining room had large double windows looking out toward the street –

and many family dinner were held there, a lot of memories over the fourteen and one-half years!

This is the landing at the top of the stairs – it is here that Sherry had her office which you see on the left.

There also was a TV up here – and three bedrooms and two bathrooms

and a sitting room off the Master that we put a single bed in that was Ella’s when she came to visit.

Maddy had her own room – Sarah could have had her own room but wanted to sleep on a made-up floor bed-

In our room – and when all three little ones came to visit – they also had made-up beds on the master’s floor!

This was supposed to be the “FOREVER” home we would spend retirement in.

Then came the PANDEMIC in 2020 – we were without family ties – restricted –

and to top that off – our 401K took a 33% hit in the downturn – our retirement was being wiped out!

We still had S.S. and some pensions and her Juice Plus monthly income –

But – Loudoun County – which has the highest per-capital income in the USA –

was becoming not affordable to live in with the high cost of taxes and cost of living there!

Then the bright side of all this – the housing market took off – the price of our house was high –

After much discussion – we decided it was time to SELL – and leave our “FOREVER” home!

Selling and moving South to the border of N.C and S.C. – sun – fun and beach and golf time!

We were in and we sold our home – and most of the furniture – made dozens of trips

to the Salvation Army – yard sales and curb-side free to anyone who wanted it!

We downsides to 1900 SF. and now reside in Cameron Woods, OIB. in North Carolina near the border of S.C.

Near the beaches and year-round golf!

Our home here has become most likely our “LAST home.

We enjoyed the fourteen and one-half years in our “FOREVER” home-

but now are comfortable here with new friends and neighbors.

I hope you enjoyed the look back on our life in NVA.

Never to be forgotten –

OUR “FOREVER” HOME IN BRAMBLETON, VA.

Papa’s World – More memories of our life!

Our life together began prior to our marriage on 6-25-1982!

We dated for 1 1/2 years – we each had two children.

Her two girls – Debby and Tammy – and my two sons Troy and Shawn.

She had custody of the girls and my boys stayed with their mother-

But – weekends were for adventures – not overly costly – but what we could provide.

Picnics – state parks – camping – campfires on our home to be in the country!

It was a time of adjustment – both for the children and for us!

We decided to get married after our divorces were final.

In the picture above are our oldest friends we have had as a couple.

I knew Jim and Dottie who in turn knew Cindy and Buck.

Then after five years of marriage – we sold the country house and moved closer to the school –

We were neighbors with Cindy and Buck – we had seen them at events with Jim and Dottie and we became fast friends!

In the mid-90s – they moved to N.C. – all six of us still remained friends –

We would vacation together with Jim and Dottie and their children

and would visit Cindy and Buck in N.C.

Then our children were all grown up and we were empty nesters.

We sought out transfers – eliminating some and applying for others.

We ended up in Northern Va. – within the company – and retained all of our service.

Some years later – Jim and Dottie transferred to Va. Beach – Jim with the same company as us –

and Dottie into the school system.

All the while – we all continued contact with one another and soon –

every four months or so-

would take turns to host!

We have maintained a friendship for over 40 years!

Now today at last we are all retired – and still we get together –

laughing – games – golfing – seeing shows and at each other’s homes.

Sherry and I moved from NVA to the border of N.C. and S.C. –

and Jim and Dottie from Va. Beach to Edenton, N.C.

Life has continued – friends have continued – and retirement is grand –

And new memories are being created –

MORE MEMORIES OF OUR LIFE – PAPA’S WORLD – LET THE GOLFING BEGIN!

PAPA’S WORLD – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – Happy Birthday to our dear friend -“DOTTIE”!

You cannot often call someone an almost lifelong friend – and still see them every four months or so!

I have known DOTTIE since she married one of my best friends – Jimmy – with whom I played softball in the mid-70s!

We have gone on family vacations – I carried her KATTIE back and forth on the beach – losing her little shoe on the way and going back so she wouldn’t burn her foot in the hot sand. She became my “LITTLE FRIEND” all those years ago.

We are both from Eldred, Pa. and she bonded with Sherry right away.

Many – many times we have taken in the Sun- Sand and Surf of beaches –

and having a “FEW” drink along the way!

Today is her “SPECIAL” day – and in a few weeks she will walk out the doors one last time into –

“RETIREMENT”!

Dottie – the best is yet to come – those little granddaughters – your new house –

and the trips you have planned –

And of course our ‘FRIENDS TRIPS” now that we all are retired!

Playing golf – sipping a few drinks – singing and of course “LAUGHING”!

THE THREE SENORITES! ALWAYS SO MUCH FUN WITH THESE THREE!

From the “GANG” to you DOTTIE – HAPPY BIRTHDAY to a beautiful lady inside and out!

SUN – SAND and SURF – TRIPS – GRANDKIDS – FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE IN YOUR FUTURE!

PAPA’S WORLD – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR DEAR FRIEND – DOTTIE!

Papa’s World – When old friends visit.

Sherry – Pam – Papa – Bobby – Bob and I went all the way from grade school to High School!

We played sports together – stayed at each other’s house – drank beer –

Hung around and grew up in a little town in the Alleghany foothills called Eldred in Pa.

While they reside in New Hampshire – they have been RVing for the past four-plus years –

leasing out their condo – they are on their way to Florida after spending last winter out West!

Their little dog Bo has been with them for over a year now – here we are walking around one of our ponds!

Walking the neighborhood – and looking at new builds – they will reevaluate after this winter – bringing to a close five years of life on the road to see if they want to put down roots or continue the Nomad life.

PAPA’S WORLD – WHEN OLD FRIENDS VISIT – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – We are loving life!

We are living our dream – living on the N.C -S.C. border – close to so many really fine golf courses!

Our close friends live 35 minutes away and we get together often – golf and dinner.

We are so close to a couple beaches – 15 minutes and we are on the sand at either one.

We get to watch the change over every weekend – much as we did in our younger years when we vacationed at the beach – now we live it every day.

The footprints disappear only to be made over and over again each day.

No more snow and ice – yes it does get cold – but by midday, it is bearable to be out and about.

Living life one day at a time!

We have now watched our oldest granddaughter graduate from college – sad that soccer has ended with her – but happy that it continues with her sister in her junior year at college.

We have volunteered at the memory care unit and now the SEA TURTLE PROTECTION program for N.C.

Ocean Isle Beach – walking the beach and sitting at nesting sites.

WE ARE LOVING LIFE IN OUR NEAR TO BE MID SEVENTY!

Thanks for reading PAPA’S WORLD – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

The sun sets for this day – one of many – many we have enjoyed in our new life in retirement!

Thanks for reading and as always HGD!

Papa’s World – retired – being healthy – a day in my life

What I do in a day of my life

I worked 47 1/2 years for the same company – prior to that – I started working when I was going into my Junior year of H.S.

I decided when I retired – almost 50 years of working – was enough !

Me – Sherry – Steve- Elaine – Cindy & Buck

It was important to maintain our friendships – stay in touch – here are four of our closest friends.

Buck and I – NWPA – golfing vacation

It was important for me to stay active and play golf.

Our six grand children – 5 grand daughters and then Bode .

Family is very important to me , when we moved to NVA – Sherry’s daughters followed us there . My two sons stayed in NWPA – we see them when we visit. In the 20 years – the Va.family has grown – and being there – we see them often if not daily. My family I grew up with is almost gone – I have a niece – great niece’s – brother’s daughter – great – great niece and 2 great – great nephews – everyone else including uncles -aunts are gone.

We have a little side business –

We live in a very expensive part of the country – in fact – this county has the highest income per household in the country. We moved here 20 years ago for work and then Sherry retired almost 7 years ago – and went full time into that business of health and nutrition. I followed one year later – and – we have been into this for almost sixteen years!

North Shore – Oahu

We travel – we play golf – we see the country – but we also maintain a healthy lifestyle – eating right – and continue to inspire people to do the same.

You have to remember – retirement means Social Security – if you have a pension plan – 401 K – and whatever else you have saved. PLAN ” B ” – if you want to maintain – you have to have a plan.

The three amigo’s for over 38 years.

Family life – friends – and maintaining health are important for us. All three – with church and God – are our mainstays of life. Giving – helping – praying and attending church – go hand in hand with our life. But – having fun – seeing friends – and watching the family grow – is to me what retirement is all about.

Cindy and Sherry

My wife is extraordinary – a natural born leader – a certified health coach – along as being a true friend to many. She is my crutch – the one I follow on health and nutrition and the reason I am still alive today.

A typical dinner meal for me

Eating healthy – sticking to the plan – and taking my nutrition supplement – and following what she says and does are my secrets to life.

The TOWER GARDEN – we grow inside and outside – year round.

We grow our own produce – April through October outside with two Tower Gardens – anything that does not grow on a tree! And then as you see above – we grow inside our garage from November through March. Always fresh and no pesticides – we know what we are eating and growing.

Team Generations

Our team has grown over the years – conference time is twice a year – all over the Country – as is the team – simply sharing by word of mouth. Families – children – helping each other – maintain that healthy lifestyle.

Sherry -Debby ( QMND – soon to be NMD )

Our goal of maintaining our lifestyle in retirement with a PLAN ” B” has been met and continues – growing year by year.

We would love to share it with you – it is not easy – life isn’t easy either – but you make it what you want it to be.

It is up to you – we supply the help – the guidance – we are there.

http://www.sf.juiceplus.com is where you contact Sherry – and look at all the different video’s – both on the health and business.

I am writing this blog today – my only regret is that SOMEONE out there did not share it with us 25 years ago – I wish they had – but we found it 16 years ago and our own PLAN” B” has worked.

Thank you for reading – and remember #livinglifetotheplus is real –

Papa’s World – retirement – loving life to the plus doing it my way.

#homeagain #HGD #JP #just

Papa’s World – just another day – be happy !

A GOOD DAY TO YOU ALL

Retirement can cause this –

“IT’S JUST ANOTHER DAY “

COFFEE

BUT – mine ALWAYS starts this way ” COFFEE ” !

Yes – that is me !

First thing I do is make that cup –

Usually with a flavored taste to it !

I AM FREE

My phone for the most part – stays in my pants pocket !

I mostly only use it for two things !

First one – ” TO ANSWER IT “

And that comes in a form of a text from my wife !

Second one – ” TO TAKE A PICTURE “

You see I really do not like my phone –

When it rings –

There is this happy – cheery voice –

THAT IS RECORDED !

Yes – you can !

And then that voice continues on with some nonsense –

I have learned to hit the turn off button rather quickly !

Last day of the week

To be honest though –

They all run together –

It use to be – “HURRY UP WEEKEND ” !

Now – it is “MAKE SURE I DO NOT FALL “

When trying to do this ! LOL

YEAH YOU KNOW

And as these days seem to all run together –

So does bed time –

The yawning starts around 8:00 PM.

Be honest now –

Then you start thinking –

What can I dream about to make me fall asleep ! LOL

Turn the AC a little bit colder

Warm blanket –

YEP – 9:00 PM. is the new MIDNIGHT !

Then you realize the weekend is gone –

Monday is here –

Unless you did SOMETHING over the weekend-

It all seems the same !

And even in retirement –

The most important thing you can remember –

“ONE DAY WE WILL DIE SNOOPY “

” YES – BUT EVERY OTHER DAY WE WILL LIVE “

THE AUTUMN OF OUR LIVES

Today is just another day –

Today – as in retirement –

Is a day in my life –

My hope is that each and every day –

I share a little part of it –

Welcome to PAPA’S WORLD –

thanks for reading

Papa’s World – We attended a retirement party for our friend.

A cake and a drawing – almost 46 years working for the same company – the same that Sherry and I worked for!

Between the THREE of us – we had a total of 125 years and when you add in his brother – Paul – 158 years!

A bunch of balloons – and a room full of co-workers – on a very rainy night – a farewell to all those years – memories and priceless.

Now – when we play – he can join me at the senior tees! LOL It will be fun and the start of many years to come.

Happy retirement my friend – Jim Brown – and thanks for reading PAPA’S WORLD – livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

PAPA’S WORLD – WE ATTENDED A RETIREMENT PARTY FOR OUR FRIEND – JIMMY!

Papa’s World – CONGRATS JIMMY “B” – RETIRED!

“JIMMY and PAPA” friends since 1977 – best buddies – friends – the same little town in NWPA!!!

Jimmy and I have played softball together – volleyball – golf – corporate cup competitions – family vacations – for years and years.

Friendships usually do not last that long – but this one is still ongoing – and he retired from the same company I did yesterday!

Dottie – Sherry – Cindy – Buck – Jimmy and Papa – friends all these years – neighbors – three of us worked for the same company – now all retired except Dottie who has a little over a year to go.

These friends go all the way back to 1980 – through thick and thin – NWPA and WNY – still going strong!

New years eve together for years and years – Cindy – Sherry, and Jim – starting off the end one year and the new one coming in.

Jimmy has been there since Sherry and I were married in 1982 – many vacations together with families – many times visiting each other – and soon – golfing together more often when Dottie retires.

A day on the ICW with all our friends and neighbors from back in WNY! Mike and Carol John joined us for a few days!

Papa’s World – Over the years – our life together.

Barb (GIGI) Debbie (sister) Sherry Papa 8-31-2004

Somewhere in Denmark – Norway or Sweden – on our 1400-mile excursion – by bus – for 10 plus days.

It was a dream for everyone to go to where Barb’s mother and father were born.

We only twice stayed in a hotel for more than one day!

We saw so many beautiful things and places and even loaded the bus onto a huge ferry

and made our way down or up the fiords – with hundreds of other people.

The most exotic thing for me to eat was Reindeer!

The old buildings are hundreds of years old – the rune stones –

Sherry and I went off by ourselves and toured old town Stockholm and then the new city.

Eating big breakfasts is the major meal of the day!

A trip we have in memories and locked away in our minds.

In a garden in the middle of Sarasota, Florida

A trip we made to visit our friend Ginger at her condo on the waterfront.

A place we considered retiring to but for the distance away – it was a possibility!

Someday we hope to return and explore more.

Shares a toast with her sister Debbie in the Villages, Florida.

Before my brother passed away – we spent winters with him at his home in The Villages.

It was a unique time in our lives – riding the golf cart everywhere – playing golf with him.

A time that I shall always associate with Roger – my brother and how we were the only ones left.

The Villages – I also could have lived in – but HAPPY HOUR came too early and too long! LOL

Papa’s World – February – 77 degrees – BEACHING IT!

After a winter with rare snow and even rarer ice – 77 degrees and we headed for the beach!

We moved here – almost on the S.C. border – to have the weather we can walk in every day!

And we do that 90 % of the time – except when the wind is blowing!

YES – we are fair-weather walkers!

But then – it seems once a week – it is BEACH WEATHER!

And a few other people feel the same way!
For being off-season and not spring – locals hit the beach!
Sherry – chair – sand and the ocean – water – fishing boats – casino boat way out – life is good!
Spending quality time with neighborhood friends for a couple hours of beaching it!

PAPA’S WORLD – our dream come true

Papa’s World – birthday – 72 years – growing old and young walking on the beach.

One of my favorite pass times since we moved to NMB – morning walks on the beach!
Sherry told me this was my day – being my birthday – and I said I wanted to go for a early morning walk – on the beach.

Usually – we do not walk this early – but I am a early riser – 5:00 am. each and every morning!

I have been that way my entire life – but I also go to bed early – by 8:30 pm.

I react to what my body wants – if I go past that feeling of wanting to sleep – then I am awake for hours!

But – with that being said – my body automatically awakes the same time every morning!

And then – without proper sleep – I feel lousy all day!

A good nights sleep – waking up – writing my blog – getting dressed and then we walk out to this!

Wide open beach – low tide – gray – white clouds – blue skies and warm sun!

My kind of day!

Papa – checking his phone – walking on my birthday – life is good – I am blessed.

Papa’s World – the first household items that we could carry – and she is named Polly – The Pelican!

Good day everyone!

We have been furniture hunting – the whole house – as we have almost nothing!

We sold it all – 98 % of it – to the folks who bought our home!

While it has been somewhat stressful for my wife –

and me being the one who does not like to shop-

I AM LOVING THIS!

Another beautiful sun rise!

Yes – that is right! When we usually go shopping – I tend to find a place –

and sit and watch people!

Maybe with a cup of coffee or a bottle of water.

I find people interesting.

You can almost tell who they are by just observing!

So – here I am – looking at furniture – and I actually like doing this!

That is completely out of norm for me.

And has turned very stressful for my wife.

But -as of this writing with hoping 3 1/2 months to go to closing

The middle of May – I can say we have now completed 95 % of what we need!

We have one sun room to finish and some end tables!

There – right in the middle opposite the front door is the sun room!

We have ended up buying from three different stores –

with what will be three different deliveries!

And I still have to get our items we have in storage delivered to N.C.!

But – we were able to hand carry three items back to the car and then back to the Condo – in Ocean Keyes!

One table lamp – one floor lamp and meet POLLY THE PELICAN!

Our theme is going to be somewhat beach like –

since we will be only four miles to Ocean Isle Beach and six miles to Sunset Beach!

All in N.C. between Calabash and Shallotte.

We contacted the three little ones and they – ( CASSIDY) came up with the name for the Pelican.

You see – there was a smaller version already in the condo-

and I had told them I named it RALPH! LOL

They thought that to be funny!

THank you for reading Papa’s World

Papa’s World – another beautiful sunrise and then a cool day of golf!

Waking up to this every morning – at the end of June – nine months of this – memories for a lifetime!
Golfing with our close friends at a golf course way out in the country of N.C.

We awoke to a beautiful sunrise – a bit chiily –

But the forecast called for low 50’s but Sunny!

It makes a big difference with hardly any wind!

As the Sun continues to rise – clouds form but are suppose to clear away!

I have come to accept here in S.C. – that the day changes dramatically

the higher the Sun gets in the sky!

So – you prepare for the day – getting a mental image in your mind

dress in layers – drink your coffee or tea

and know that the day – will turn out okay!

Another painted canvas by nature!

So it goes – sunrise – sunshine – cool but no wind – warmth.

A fine day to be alive and a fine day to golf with friends!

Papa’s World – One final beach walk with friends!

Dottie Sherry Jim

They were leaving mid morning for their trip back to Va. Beach

where they have lived for a number of years.

Our other friends – who live 50 miles away

had gone home the night before

as appointments awaited them in the morning.

We have been getting together for the past 25 years

when we all moved away

having been friends prior to that for at least 10 years.

The beach – as it always has – called us to walk one final time!

Jimmy

For years and years we took beach vacations together

raising our families

Jim and I played softball together back in the late 70’s!

Now the little ones are all grown up

and have little ones and big ones of their own

Grand children – the years have passed

but the love of the sand and surf remains!

Beach life – Boggie Boards – Wave riding with tubes – Sipping a favorite brew

all things we loved to do – but I no longer ride the waves –

I still sip a brew – and I still walk the surf!

One last walk on the beach – just as we have done countless times before.

Life has been good to all of us

we still get along and get together

friendships last and last!

Papas World – The home base with the 3 little ones!

We have sold the house and moved in with our daughter

and family.

These are our youngest grand children –

The twins – Taylor – the tallest – Cassidy the short one.

And our grand son Bode.

Bode and Cassidy are two peas in a pod!

Being the only boy with five grand daughters

he has become my little buddy!

We are here as sort of a home base –

and will also stay with our other daughter Debby

in Cross Junction Va. at Lake Holiday.

In Lake Holiday with Debby

The three oldest are Maddy – Ella and Sarah.

We will spend time with them but the older two work.

We have been welcomed with open arms –

But our plan is not to infringe – we will travel –

help out when we can and see where we end up.

But for now – I am in a warm fuzzy place

Watching and enjoying each and every moment.

The innocence – the watching them grow up.

And the quiet time of a IPAD –

With all three so quiet and focused.

We have landed in the right place-

Home base with the three little ones

and every so often with the three big ones.

Life is good and we are blessed.

Papa’s World – Grand daughters came to visit

We picked them up on Saturday afternoon – at their house –

Their parents were leaving early the next morning –

To take their oldest daughter to college –

They would not be back until early evening on Tuesday –

Good morning – welcome to Papa’s World.

We had the girls stay with us for three days – and it was a pleasure.

Oh – and we also had Sarah’s ( with a “H” ) she says –

LOVE BIRD – FINNY !

Our three oldest grand daughters
Maddy & Ella holding Sarah

Finny will be coming to live with us for a week when they go on vacation !

Sarah – is the youngest at 13 while Ella will be 16 next month.

Sarah – our dancer – actor

Never a cross word – extremely funny – giggling and laughing –

Sarah can be a hand full – but she is so outgoing –

And she is sprouting right up there – Ella is already as tall as Maddy –

And I think Sarah will be taller than either one.

Ella is within a inch and half of Sherry – who is 5′ 9 ” !

Ella on this board that you wiggle back and forth and it moves forward

We took them everywhere

and they also spent a lot of time with their cousins

They constantly – the both of them – went up and down

and around the house on some type of board.

Sarah on her board

I would of been upside down in a second on these things !

Ella and Sarah

We went to the pool yesterday afternoon –

and they almost had it to themselves !

Packed up and waiting

Sadly – it all came to a end last night as they waited for their ride home.

People ask why we don’t move to a warmer climate –

Two of the reasons were here this weekend.

The house is quiet now – no laughter – no giggling –

No noise going up and down the street

I gaze at their beds where they slept –

And think just how fortunate we are –

Sherry and Finny

In a couple weeks – Finny will be coming back

But I miss them already –

Little ( tiny) Ella
Sarah growing up

Looking forward to the next time –

Two young ladies – laughing –

Made these grand parents happy for the weekend.

Welcome to Papa’s World

Thank you

Papa’s World – OLD ? Maybe – but still thinking !

Good morning World – ever think out loud ?

Ever nod off around 2:00 PM. ?

Ever get up and it takes a moment to take that first step ?

Good morning everyone !

Getting “OLDER” is a fact of life – feeling it is also !

But – you also have to have the right frame of mind !

When younger – couldn’t wait

Now – in my before retirement life –

for my lunch hour ( because I did not know what else to do )

I would eat my lunch –

kick the seat back ( Buicks are made for comfort)

And take what I called a POWER 20 minute nap !

In the shade – warm breeze

I would leave the windows down – park in the shade –

And fall right to sleep!

Now- since retirement- it seems like that years & years habit –

Followed me – each afternoon – I feel it coming on !

Me on most nights

Thing is – now every day I go and pick up my 8 year old grand daughters –

I actually get there in line early – like a hour –

and there is a method to my madness !

I take a small couch pillow with me – kick the seat back –

Tune the radio into my favorite SPORTS show –

And slowly drift off for my 20 minute power nap !

I do this all the time

A lot of times I will just sit and think – using silence to sort out thoughts !

Over the years – I have quietly trained my mind to recall –

I picture events – that way it is easier for me to remember .

So true

But there are times when I just stop – and think – what was I going to do ?

I am a creature of habit – I have a place for most things –

I find that it makes it easier for me to remember !

I also concentrate on what I am doing or am going to say.

Concentration for me is my way to remember things !

Have done this

Now – I am also not one who measures every thing I do –

I learned from my Mother to cook from scrap –

She often would bake every day – pies – cakes – bread and rolls.

She did a lot of it with memory – and I am the same way.

Music soothes the soul

I love music – most all kinds –

” ALEXIA – PLAY JIMMY BUFFET ” !

I try not to limit my listening – on long trips –

I will listen to Country – Classic’s – Rock – Easy listening – Bluegrass –

It is my way to reconnect to past events !

My wife says I have a hearing problem

Hearing – I have found as I get older – I hear things – but –

A lot of what I hear SOUNDS like something else !

I think that as you get older – at least for me – that happens !

Still the same

My little thoughts for today on getting older –

But some things never get old – they just get better !

This month – 6-25-82 – will be 37 years –

I can still walk – I can still think –
