Papa’s World – Just looking around!

We have had snow twice in the almost six years we have been in S.C. and N.C. –

And this is a picture of the sunset for the first time!

It was not much – maybe three inches, but with the sun –

Quickly turned to ice and was gone in five days!

This is the back yard –

This year, we had a freak storm cyclone –

That is what they called it, and it came right up the coast from the South.

They even had snow in Northern Florida!

FIFTEEN INCHES is what we got in twenty-four hours.

And the wind was terrible –

Causing it to drift in places to three feet!

I thought we had left this all behind in NVA and WNY!

We did not even own a snow shovel!

I DO NOT LIKE SNOW AND ICE!

This is my idea of winter in the Carolinas!

Dress warm, and when the sun comes out –

Remove layers as it gets warmer, and it does do that!

I can live with that!

Walking on the beach as long as it is not windy-

The sand STINGS your face.

On a walk at the OIB community center in February-

About 50 degrees in the sun, but felt warmer.

So far, we love the weather of the Carolinas!

On the island of OIB-

Free Friday night music concerts from the end of May to the end of September.

Here, the seating area is starting to fill up.

You can take your own food and drinks-

The drinks can not be in a glass!

The music is good and lasts about two hours.

AND, IT IS FREE!

Friday night concerts at OIB!

Other towns nearby have their own free concerts on different nights!

A favorite place for us to go and grab a coffee or tea is Causeway 59 –

Situated just after you exit the causeway bridge to OIB!

There are three restaurants here and a marina.

We sit here and watch the boats come in to refill or to eat at the restaurants.

This is all just off the ICW, which has access to the ocean.

Just a quiet little place and good food!

For enhanced IMMUNE systems.

We had always dreamed of living near a beach!

Today, we live near three of them, and two more are 30 to 45 minutes away.

Papa’s World – Cold – Winter – PUZZLE TIME!

This past Winter, we had a major N.E. snow cyclone!

It started around 6:30 PM, and 15 inches later –

There it was!

This was RARE for this area –

Maybe once in 30 to 40 years!

But at least there was very little ice!

Since we do not own a snow shovel –

I used my leaf blower –

The snow was powder-like-

And after hours –

I cleared a path to the street for our car, which we backed into the garage.

And the sun came out, and the melt started right away.

We had strong winds during the storm, which came up the East Coast from the S.W.!

Parts of the grass were wind-swept bare –

And parts had two to three foot “DRIFTS” –

The driveway was part of those drifts!

Then my good friend “JIM” showed up with a snow shovel, and we cleaned the other half rather quickly.

Sherry concentrated on the end of the driveway, where melted snow turned to ice –

And clogged the drain to the street run off!

She freed that up as Jim, and I cleared the driveway.

By the end of the second day of sunshine-

The driveway and road were clear and free of snow and ice.

The hot sun – although maybe only 45 to 50 degrees outside –

The major difference is living here in the South.

Everything melts away within four to five days!

But – a side result of all this –

ARE PUZZLES!

I groan from the inside as Sherry finds them from the closets, cupboards, or thrift stores!

Here is the kicker-

I FIND MYSELF CONSTANTLY HOVERING AROUND THE TABLE, FINDING MATCHES!

It becomes addictive for me! LOL

Even finishing one up – breaking it apart-

Reboxing and dumping the new one out!

Finding the edges – and turning all those 300 pieces over.

And then, as habit is –

Sorting them out and separating them into colors and like pieces!

I AM OBSESIVE!

That is why I GROANED INSIDE when she put the first one out!

Some pieces are much like this! LOL-LOL-LOL!!!!

But – I must admit – it is good for the brain –

And something to do during the cold outside!

It is far from the snow we had back in NVA!

There, it took months to melt.

Less than a week later, the melt is complete.

Our plant sits on the inside window ledge-

Absorbing the sunshine from outdoors.

We are back to normal after a rare Northeastern snow blast cyclone that occurred mostly near the shoreline.

COLD – WINTER – PUZZLE TIME!!!!

Papa’s World – Ten years ago – the CALM before the STORM!

We lived at Minerva Drive in Brambleton, Va.

For fourteen and one-half years!

Ten years ago – the day started out sunny – somewhat warm –

And we took our normal two to three-mile walk –

That we did every day!

It was a calming day –

And the weather forecast was that a storm was approaching!

We lived in a community just behind the DULLES AIRPORT!

This is Northern Va., and while we did get snow and ice-

It stayed green outside until early winter.

LITTLE DID WE KNOW WHAT YOU SEE IN THIS PICTURE –

WAS THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM!

A view from the porch steps of the intersection in front of our home!

To the top left is the house that –

THE DIRECTOR OF WORLDWIDE COUNTER TERRORISM LIVED FOR THE FBI!

He retired before we did.

And moved away!

This is the intersection that I was watching from my chair on the front porch when a car pulled up at an angle-

In the middle of the intersection.

A man rolled the window down,

And he leaned out and started taking pictures of the house.

I was caught by surprise,

And it was over in mere seconds.

He did a U-turn in the middle of the street and sped off back the way he had come.

Later that day, I walked across and spoke to my friend –

I told him what had happened.

He asked me if I got the plate number,

And I said “NO” –

It was all so quick,

And I did not even think about it!

He then told me –

His wife had seen a BLACK SUV pull up across the street –

On the right-hand side, park.

She recorded the plate number and called him at work in the capital.

He ran the plate number,

And it came back –

It did not exist!

He had been testifying in Congress against the Chinese –

He took out his wallet –

And handed me his card with his name and phone number on it!

He told me if I ever saw anything again-

Call him right away and try to get the plate number!

I never saw anything after that –

But I still have his card,

Although he retired years ago.

Anyway, that is a side story to the STORM and this intersection!

The next morning after I took this picture –

We woke up to this!

The calm had passed, and the storm became real!

As high as the snow is piled-

It was nowhere near as much of a storm we had while living here.

Sherry and I lived in NWPA and WNY for 50 years.

I can say – in NVA –

We had three storms-

That left more snow than we ever had back there.

Most was recorded by the DULLES AIRPORT –

From our second story, we could see the tower.

We had 48 inches in a day and a half!

National Harbor with Buck and Cindy!

Around the time we lived back in NVA.

Papa’s World – The day the SNOW came!

It started off like many other days in NVA-

Brambleton, Va. –

We were a couple miles away from the backside of the DULLES AIRPORT –

For Washington, D.C. in Loudoun County.

Be prepared –

a winter storm watch has been announced.

This was the view from the steps of our front porch home –

of the intersection.

We were prepared –

after all, we had spent the first 50 years of our lives –

living and coping with winter snowbelt storms in WNY and NWPA!

But – all of that did not compare to what was to come.

Our patio – is enclosed by the house on three sides –

and a fence on the outer side toward the street.

Many family times spent here –

Back in WNY – I had a van – with wide tires.

I would take the van –

and ride back and forth on the driveway –

Packing down the snow instead of paying someone to plow it!

Here it was different-

only the driveway was about two car lengths long!

I had my shovel and a large pushbroom.

Then it started to snow –

light at first –

Then it started to stick to the paved sidewalks and road.

It continued all day and into the night –

We took turns trying to keep ahead of it.

Here Sherry attempts to clear a path on the front sidewalk!

You can see ahead of her where I had managed a path to the road.

Early morning of the next day –

less than 24 hours after the start.

It had turned into a major snowstorm in NVA! and the East Coast.

It continued the next morning !

They were trying to plow –

and keep the roads open the next day-

but it continued to come down.

The open door is out to the back patio next to the garage and driveway.

The garage door – over 36 inches and still snowing!

Me digging outside by the back patio.

The weather alerts kept coming –

the storm was not over!

It was piling up – soon the snow banks would be taller than me!

The entrance to the patio from the kitchen –

Over waist deep –

Not going out there-

and we had an all-nighter coming up!

That night after 24 hours of snow –

A look at the patio,

That fence I could look over on my tip toes!

If you go back to the picture of looking outside at the patio before the storm from inside this window-

This is looking from the outside into the front living room!

We had over 48 inches of snow in less than a day and a half.

In all the years of living in the snow belts up North –

We had never experienced –

this amount in such a short period.

The official measurements came from the DULLES AIRPOT just a few miles away!

We sold that home in 2020 and moved to the border area of OIB- SUNSET BEACH-

Our winters here are much different – even though in early Feb. we experienced snow-

This is a rare event here.

But we did get three to five inches with a hard crust.

Everything lasted maybe 5 to 7 days!

And then a few days later after it was gone –

We had 80-plus degrees.

There is a saying down here –

“IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE WEATHER – WAIT FIVE MINUTES AND IT WILL CHANGE”!

LOL – BUT FOR ONE DAY IT SNOWED AND SNOWED –

give me that beach chair any day-

and I will try to get up – better-

than shoveling snow!!! LOL
