Papa’s World – POLAR PLUNGE – 94.9 The Surf!

On a very cold – January day –

on the beach at North Myrtle Beach –

at what is called THE ARCH-

Radio station 94.9 THE SURF –

sponsored a POLAR PLUNGE!

On NMB –

flag waving and the crowd watches two DJs

and a couple dozen souls

about to run into the Surf!

We moved down to NMB –

during the Pandemic in 2020!

We just happened to come across a condo on a lake

1/2 mile from the main street and the radio station!

I had never heard of this station

but it has been here for decades and decades!

So I decided to listen

and what I found was

“CLASSICS” from the 50s through the present –

AND Beach Music!

Carolina Beach Music started right here in the 40s.

Alabama had a hit song “DANCING ON THE BLVD” which is right here.

I was hooked on listening to Motown –

Classic Rock

and present-day music from all the Carolina Bands

up and down the two coasts.

Two of the DJs –

with back to the picture in yellow and white shorts –

Jim Quick

the 11 to 3 timeslot –

and of his Coast Liners Band

and the tall man to the right –

DJ-HEAVY –

afternoon show 3 to 7.

These two men organized the POLAR PLUNGE

for donations to the HUMANE SOCIETY.

It might have reached 50 degrees in the full sun –

But the wind chill took it way below that!

There they go –

maybe two dozen – walking

and running into the cold surf.

Search and rescues were on hand –

Jet ski and men with life-throwing lines –

they also were in the water with wet suits on.

This whole thing was broadcast live from the radio station

which is right beside the beach entrance

and maybe a hundred yards from where they ran into the water.

Large speakers were set on the beach

and a couple hundred people showed up to watch and cheer them on.

Now they went in and all of them went under the water

and then they came back out!

We watched thinking glad it is them and not us!

It was fun to watch –

but glad it was not me!

After we walked a block down the beach

to “BOUYS on the WATER”-

A local hangout we visited often

while we lived but a half mile away-

Here we split a cheeseburger and fries.

I had the BOUYS brewed by CROOKED HAMMOCK draft beer –

It was warm in there

and I was glad

I had not done anything as crazy as the “POLAR PLUNGE”!

Thanks for reading and it was fun being back in the old hood!

Papa’s World – Thoughts – younger years!

My mother’s name was Mary – she was Irish Catholic – my father’s name was –

Clarence -Russell – Everyone called him Bob.

I grew up on North Main Street in a little town called Eldred – in Pa. near the NYS border.

Bradford, Pa. was 14 miles as was Olean, N.Y.

Bradford was known for OIL – Pennsoil – Kendall –

Olean for Saint Bonaventure – BONNIES BASETBALL!

My father introduced me to those years of BONAS basketball – sitting at the kitchen table –

with a small radio – a sheet of lined white paper – and he would write the names of each basketball starter

for Saint Bonaventure down and those of subs.

It was the age of ROCK and ROLL – for my brother – turned collar – slicked back hair.

He was ten years older.

I would sit with my dad, listening as he did and watching him put down an X for a score.

At the foul line, it was a ZERO, and if made a line on a slant drawn through it!

I must say I went with him when he bowled – yes our small town had a bowling alley!

He taught me how to keep score often saying –

“ADD TEN – THEN SUBTRACT 3 IN YOUR HEAD TO GET THE CORRECT SCORE”

depending on what number you were using to add and subtract.

My dad, you did not cross the line but was also very dedicated to his family.

It was sitting with him during those games at our kitchen table –

in the mid to late 50s- that I became a BONNIE fan.

Then – we would drive down the street to the local watering hole – “SLAVINS”!

A bar- grill and all the men would meet there as RUSS was a huge BONNIE fan.

He had a radio for the bar and everyone leaned in to listen while sipping beer.

Our seats were just by the entrance as the bar top bends around so your back was toward the door.

That went on for several years and then he somehow got a hold of one season ticket at the OLD OLEAN ARMORY!

Now this place was crowded and tickets were so hard to come by

hundreds of fans around the whole court so that you could touch the players sitting on the bench or throwing the ball in !

IN OTHER WORDS – A LOUD PIT OF SCREAMING LOYAL BONAS HOMETOWN FANS!

I had to stay home with the radio at the kitchen table and that is when I took up keeping the scores with Xs and O’S with slanted lines.

He wanted to take me but there were no tickets.

Later in life – after the RILEY CENTER was built on campus – I got my own tickets.

Later – before we moved to NVA – Sherry and I had season tickets along with

a golf membership across from the University at their golf course.

To this day I follow the “BONNIES” – checking news stories – recruiting and transfers –

I no longer keep score – but I remember my times with my dad –

AND MARY – SHE RULED THE HOUSE – IRISH CATHOLIC – my dad – IRISH PROTESTANT-

That my friends is a whole other blog to come! LOL

Papa’s World – THE SOUND OF SILENCE – ALEXA TURNS OFF!

This the season – cold out – breezy – warm jacket – scarf – ear muffs – walking in the cold – head back to the house –

“ALEXA – PLAY CLASSIC’S”!

She answers – at least it sounds like a “SHE” telling me some channels I can play and then a playlist starts!

I listen to tunes – sometimes country – sometimes easy listening – I LOVE ALL MUSIC!

The music spins from one song to the next – I write my blog listening – relaxing – memories come flooding as I hear the words.

All my life I have listened to music – can’t tell you most times who is singing – but I associate it with different

periods of my life and happenings!

We have been together since around 1980 and married in 1982! Funny – we have in common birthdays –

Hers is 7-5-49 while mine is 5-7-49 – never saw anyone else with those numbers being married!

The dawning of a new day – I am at my desk with my computer – my blog site up and am writing – when suddenly – SILENCE!

It is as though something is missing – I listen and then it registers – NO MUSIC – ALEXA has turned off – all by herself!

Do not ask me why – I am not a TECH kind of guy – I guess there might be some way to set it to last longer!

Like golf – I just grit my teeth and play on!

I arise from my chair and venture out to the kitchen where “ALEXA” sits – wording comes across the screen –

I do not bother to read it!

“ALEXA – PLAY SOME COUNTRY MUSIC”!

She responds about some music channel – I turn around and start to walk away –

Kieth Urban comes out from the unit –

It is gonna be a wonderful day – “SILENCE IS NOT ALWAYS GOLDEN”!
