Papa’s World – House of Plants – Sherry!

Outside – and when it is extremely cold – we bring it into the lanai! CACTUS!

Sherry has many plants in the house and on the lanai.

Last year, we were walloped by Deer eating flowers, buds, and leaves.

Moving plants around –

trying to hide them from the Deer.

These plants are mostly indoor plants.

They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors!

This one was her mother’s!

We brought it to our home after she passed.

Today, it spends most of its time in the enclosed Lanai!

There are many Christmas Cactus plants –

And they flower at different times of the year.

Ochrid and Christmas Cactus –

They bring a smile to my life when I see them every day!

She has a green thumb for her plants –

I do not water them –

She has a schedule,

and it is best I do not interfere!

The plants in the house bring joy –

PAPA’S WORLD – HOUSE OF PLANTS – SHERRY!

Papa’s World – “KEEPER” of the PLANTS!

It has been three-plus years since we moved into our new home in Cameron Woods Community!

We now live less than eight miles from the border of N.C. and S.C. in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

In every home we have lived in – we have done our own plantings – except here – the TREES!

We have had three small palm trees and two Crepe Myrtles planted –

We have kept all the bushes that came with the house except for three.

All the landscaping small stones – edging and large border bricks we had installed.

The rest – with Sherry picking them out – I installed myself.

At 75 years old – my days of digging by hand for planting trees have ended!

But – I still am the one who daily maintains the bushes – eight rose bushes –

numerous flowering bushes that come back each year.

Since Sherry had her Compound Fracture of her LI Vertrabrea –

It has become my sole duty to water – and move the flowers in and off the front porch daily –

because we have some very hungry DEER!

They have munched the neighbor to little stubs of once glorious flowers and plants!

I have sprayed all the bushes and plants and parts of our Tower Garden

( YES THEY ATE THE LEAVES AND FLOWERS OF THE CUCUMBERS AND TOMATOES)

With deer and Rabbit repellent – and they ate them anyway.

So now – in the morning I move all the moveable pots off the covered front porch –

back onto the flower beds and at night move them back onto the porch –

Keep your fingers crossed that the Deer will not come onto the porch!

With the Tower Garden – we have a Winter covering – that looks like a shiny metal blanket –

that allows Sun and Rain through – I cover in the late afternoon and take off in the morning!

So far = at this writing – I write way ahead – this has worked.

Sherry has come up with the nick-name of “KEEPER OF THE PLANTS” for me.

Here is a picture of me after I had moved all the plants back to their spots before church-

on Father’s Day!

Usually, these pots are full of bright colors – but at this time they are green as the Deer ate all the colors of flowers!

We decided not to buy more new plants – they are expensive-

And to nurse them back with Miricle Grow which I have been doing – the Deep Green –

tells me they are healthy –

Now – time will tell – the whole neighborhood has been hit by this small herd of Deer.

They even jumped several fenced-in yards – munching the plants.

So – as the “KEEPER OF THE PLANTS” I shall continue my daily regime –

And keep my sanity of golfing and hitting that perfect shot that brings me back time after time!

Papa’s World – The BILTMORE GARDENS!

To think these magical gardens are over 100 years old – it takes your breath away!

Here is where thousands of trees – plants and flowers were carefully cultivated to bring life back to a land cleared for farming!

I can not imagine the cost of building this and maintaining it; it still functions today!

The arrangements and colors are breathtaking – the entire average surrounding the estate is a result of years of planting trees – shrubs, and plants that flower.

Cindy and Sherry are inside the greenhouse with thousands of plants.

It is stunning that this is still going on all these years.

If you visit – walk the walled-in gardens and visit the greenhouse – you will not be disappointed.

Papa’s World – I planted Crepe Myrtles – beautiful !

I guess it must of been 8 to 10 years ago –

We bought three Crepe Myrtles – about three feet tall –

I had to dig the holes on my knees with a garden scoop –

because of the large amount of ROCKS in the ground !

Good morning !

Yesterday as we walked back to the house –

I realized just how beautiful they are –

and the one out front was the last to bloom !

Sherry pointing at the red flowers

Our house sits on the corner – the other two are in the back –

and they always bloom first.

But this one on the corner – with the green in the background –

just catches your eye when you come up the street.

Positive thinking

We are truly blessed – as we really like where we live –

We talk about moving further South-

But we have been here for 13 years !

The front porch

Over those 13 years – I have planted everything – all the bushes –

The large trees I did not –

And 95 % comes back each year.

Tunnel of trees

We installed a irrigation system two years ago –

after years and years of me dragging hoses around –

It has been a lifesaver –

Most of the lawns are burnt up and brown –

with all the heat and Sun and no rain.

We made this our home

When we moved in – our house was the only one here –

Everything else was built later and we watched it all being done.

Today – they still have a couple more years of building.

They will open the third High School in September –

And our community has been named

as one of the top 25 in the country !

Front yard

Today we are retired –

Living near our grand kids –

But I still cherish my yard – trees – flowers and plants –

They have become a part of who I am –

Funny – but I enjoy seeing them grow and change !

The opposite view from the side

One day we will pack up and leave it all behind –

But – until that time comes –

I will always look as we are coming home –

seeing the green – reds and yellows –

knowing that we did that –

living my life one day at a time!

Two Crepe Myrtles in back
along with ever greens I planted

Papa’s World – A little bit of this & that – a piece of me!

We have bought and sold FIVE houses in our 38 years of marriage.

And – each one I have left behind a little bit of myself!

Our first house was in the country – EAST WINDFALL ROAD –

outside Olean New York – but Portville N.Y. school district.

The driveway was a 1/10 th. of a mile long.

Great for sled riding in Winter but also getting stuck in the snow!

At that house – Sherry’s father and I built large butchers block –

multiple colors of wood – glued together – light and dark and oiled.

It was large and took up the full counter to the right of the stove.

It replaced that counter top.

It was really something and he taught me so much

as he was a master carpenter.

Our second house was Pleasant acres drive – Portville N.Y.

At that house I left a tiled floor in both the laundry room and the half bath.

As well as nearly 50 % of the basement.

My very first tile work.

I also replaced all the molding and door frames with the help of her father.

And we installed chair molding in the dining room.

But the secret was the finish – he taught me just how to get that high finish.

Tricks he used using cheese cloth to strain the stain – steel wool it –

and apply coat after coat until it almost was like a mirror!

Our third house was Fountain side lane in Fairfax Va.

Here I painted the entire ceiling and walls of the garage –

having to close the garage door and it got really hot in there.

I also went into the woods there and followed a small stream

and collected all sizes and colors of limestone rocks.

I used them by the eaves spouts for when it rained

and let the water gush over them like a stream.

I installed dimmer light switches for the dining room

and pained rooms.

Our next house was Ridgetop Commons – just a few blocks from the last one.

Both houses were about 2 miles from the NRA headquarters

and George Mason University.

At this house I put down sand and gravel a

and installed blocks for our patio under the deck

I also installed a small swing for our grand daughters

During that time when we first moved in –

the water drain backed up – we had to vacate –

They had to come in and dig up the driveway and to the middle of the road.

When they built the place –

someone broke the main drainage line

connecting to the main sewage line in the middle of the road.

Here we had a 15 foot hole in our driveway & to the middle of the street.

They put us up at the Hyatt in Reston until they fixed it!

But – I wrote my full name and date in the cement of that driveway!

I also built and installed a platform in that garage for storage.

In our last house on Minerva drive in Brambleton Va,

This was our dream home – thinking we would be here –

never moving again.

I built this patio out the back door

and moved

and took out all the bushes on the whole yard.

I planted all the bushes and trees by hand – mostly on my knees

as the ground is full of rocks and I dug them out with a garden trough.

I planted everything and it comes back each year.
Every tree and bush I planted
I moved these from the front yard
The last things I planted were these bushes and the Swedish Roses – given to us from our close friends in memory of Sherry’s mother Barb ( GIGI)

I have often thought in my mind to return and see if it all is still there

after 38 years have gone by!

Yes – I have left a little bit of this and that where ever we have lived!

I somehow remember them all!

There is a piece of me all over –

but for the most part I am the only one who knows.

Except my name – set in cement with the date

On Timber Meadows Drive- Fairfax Va.

And by the way – I also installed a ceiling fan there

in the Master Bedroom – and while up on my metal step ladder

a storm blew in just as I was connecting it up –

And rain poured and lightening flashed –

Thunder roared and scared me – here I was – standing on that ladder

But my name is engraved on that driveway- and the date.

I will always remember that fan! LOL
