Papa’s World – The BUNKUM STONE in Ashville!

As we were walking to go to the Bus Comedy Tour – we came across THE BUNKUM STONE and this plaque explaining what it was and I found it interesting!

Buck – Cindy and Sherry in front of the house and the stone along the street!

Little finds such as this are why we explore different areas and streets – you just never know what you will come across!

Exploring Ashville, N.C. with friends – finding the little-known places – here is one of them!

Papa’s World – The BILTMORE GARDENS!

To think these magical gardens are over 100 years old – it takes your breath away!

Here is where thousands of trees – plants and flowers were carefully cultivated to bring life back to a land cleared for farming!

I can not imagine the cost of building this and maintaining it; it still functions today!

The arrangements and colors are breathtaking – the entire average surrounding the estate is a result of years of planting trees – shrubs, and plants that flower.

Cindy and Sherry are inside the greenhouse with thousands of plants.

It is stunning that this is still going on all these years.

If you visit – walk the walled-in gardens and visit the greenhouse – you will not be disappointed.

PAPA’S WORLD – The Biltmore estate!

Sherry – standing in front of the 170,000 SF Biltmore estate in Ashville, N.C.

This is hard to imagine such a huge home but we toured the whole thing that we were allowed to see.

Room after room – floor after floor – bowling lanes – pool – workout area and bedrooms and bathrooms.

Today’s cost – I guess somewhere North of $200 million!

View from the back-covered patio porch that was a hundred feet long!

The estate today is a tourist destination with audio tours from room to room and floor to floor.

I would put this on a bucket list of something to see in your lifetime.

Sherry and I were inside – this area was the heart of the house – full of plants – trees and sunken down from the floor.

This was our second time being here – Thanks for reading PAPA’S WORLD – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – The GROVE RESORT – ASHVILLE!

Sherry – on the back terrace – overlooking the golf course at the GROVE RESORT!

We were told while touring Ashville – it was a must-see and we did!

Very expensive to stay and play golf here – the wall of pictures consists of s WHOS WHO in the last century!

On the covered entrance to the front door – BEARS! Fake ones but she loved them!

I have not ever seen us staying or playing golf here – it was an experience to see –

The whole resort is stacked stone and quite beautiful/ but out of our price range!

Even though it was hot outside – a roaring fire was going in the lobby and the air conditioning was on!

The logs were four or five feet long – stacked in a large covered building by the parking lot!

The seating was comfortable and the bar was very busy.

Valet parking outside – and paid parking in the lots!

Papa’s World – Random pictures in Ashville, N.C.

On our exploration – a side trip to Siera Nevada Brewery – just outside Ashville!

We toured and had a tasting – went to the bar – and had a drink and a hot pretzel – great tour!

I found this to be funny – back in WNY – this is the beer I drank – PBR! LOL!

The Woolworth soda fountain where a protest – the first of its kind – occurred in the 60s for racial equality!

This still exists as it did then and we just happened upon it in a store that now is full of local vendors selling arts and crafts!

A visit to this famous Roman Catholic Church with the largest free-standing rotunda in the country!

This church was beautiful on the inside – well worth the time to tour it!

Our time here went fast but we walked several times the city while here.

We also took a bus tour and we drove to The Lexington Glassworks –

where we watched the handblown glass being made!

The process of making glass – was quite interesting as we watched and listened to them as they worked!

Displays of hand crafted glass wares you could purchase – we purchased a small aqua-blue pumpkin that matches some pieces we already own.

PAPA’S WORLD – RANDOM PICTURES OF OUR TRIP TO ASHVILLE, N.C.

Papa’s World – Living life one day at a time!

Our little family picture about 12 years ago – since this picture – our grandson Bode was born and today is 8 years old!

We are also retired now – moving from NVA to the border of N.C. and S.C.

We now are in our retirement house – about four miles from the beach.

My sons from my first marriage and their partners – on the Sunset Beach Pier.

They remain in NWPA where they grew up – we transferred to NVA for our jobs and they stayed behind.

Today they work in the energy field of state and power companies winterizing homes for the elderly.

We live our lives one day at a time to the fullest we can manage. Retirement has been good to us and the weather here is what we like.

Bode – who is following in the footsteps of his older cousins playing soccer – I hope one day to follow him in college like we do with his cousins.

PAPA’S WORLD – LIVING LIFE ONE DAY AT A TIME!

Papa’s World – A visit to Lexington Glass Works – Ashville, N.C.

One of our day trips while in Ashville, N.C. was to Lexington Glass Works – where we watched Hand Blown Glass being transformed into beautiful glassware!

In this picture are four artisans working the glass in front of the kilns!

How they shape the glass – blowing it and adding colors all by hand.

I will post some of the finished glass in a beautiful array of colors mounted on the wall and shelf!

The pieces are all hand-done and costly – but well worth it!

All displayed in unique ways – a do not touch or handle sign – asks you to request help and they are very quick to respond!

All pieces were priced and a steady flow of customers was coming and going – the process was very detailed with the employees describing each step in the process and interacting with the customers.

We selected an aqua blue and white pumpkin that matched items we had at home!

Not seen here as these were much larger!

The detail is amazing in this mirror with a wall reflecting back!

Papa’s World – Siera Nevada Brewery-Ashville.

On a recent trip with our good friends Cindy and Buck – we scheduled a tour of the brewery –

Sierra Nevada – just outside Ashville, N.C.

Entrance to the lobby and what a sight to behold – really beautiful – well done!

The kitchen is to the left – the bar in the middle is serviced from all sides – and seating is all around.

You had over a dozen on-tap brews!

The draft beer list is on tap! We also had a beer tasting at the end of the tour.

From here you can see into the different rooms and some we were allowed to go into with the guide!

The hops room and as soon as I entered it smelled just like beer!

Five copper vats for each stage of brewing!

There were two of these vats for the final stage. Everything was so clean – their first brewery is in Chico, Calif.

We also could see the plant floor although it was past quitting time – all the cans and bottles were packed by hand – and the whole place was very clean.

We had a great tour and tasted four very good beers – one of which is only made for this brewery here for tasting – that was my favorite – a German brew!

Papa’s World – Evening trip to Sunset Beach!

After dinner, I said to Sherry – “Want to go to Sunset Beach – get ice cream and stand on the deck”?

That is Southern Beach Living!

Living the Salt Life!

Our view of the Gazebo on Sunset Beach where we stood with our cups of small ice cream!

This is where the bathrooms – showers and free parking are!

If you turn around – you are looking at the beach – pier and ocean – we stood here and a bonus – there was live music on the pier we could listen to – that is why all the people faced the pier!

Looking West from this spot – the dunes – the pay-for parking lot – and the first row of houses – oceanfront means long walkways over the protected dunes to the beach and ocean!

Because the coastline here is on a curve – the beach faces almost South and a little bit East!

From Charleston, S.C. to Wilmington, N.C. the coast looks like a quarter-moon crescent!

Sort of like a huge coastline bay!

Most storms come up from Charleston and then make a beeline to Wilmington – Cape Fear River area and then onto the Outer Banks!

I believe the last Hurricane to cause disaster damage was in the 50s!

Sea oats on the dune – we can be here in 15 minutes – but we have the island – the ICW and the main coastline between us and the ocean.

So far we have experienced a tropical storm and a grade 1 Hurricane, a number 2 is pushing it for me – but could remain – it is the wind and the trees I fear the most!

Papa’s World – Somewhere near the beach is a club – FAT HAROLDS!

We had told our neighbors about the “SHAG DANCE” and how we ventured into a dance club while living for nine months in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

You walk through the “JUKE BOX DOORS” into the past – the 40s – 50s – 60s – 70s – 80s – 90s and still going strong in the 2000s!!!!

Over 80 years – a dance was born in this area – from rhythm and blues – swing – jitterbug and rock and roll all wrapped up in one called “THE SHAG”!

You look up at the water tower and a couple is dancing – and “FAR HAROLDS” is THE CLUB!

The past 80 years are on the walls in pictures – plaques – trophies – name plates on the bar top –

a dance floor with one wall covered with ceiling-to-floor mirrors!

And – we arrived at 6:30pm. thinking we could just walk in and get a table!

It was STANDING ROOM only!

A small portion of the people in the club – and another back room and bar was closed!

6:30 pm. WEDNESDAY night and dozens of folks were dancing the night away –

you could not walk on the dance floor!

I took this picture between songs and a break – if you look toward the right side back of the room –

you can see the control room of the DJ and this was being broadcast live on 94.9 THE SURF –

the classics and beach music station on NMB!

We brought our neighbors Bill and Marcea –

and before we left – it was can we come back and take dance lessons!!!!

Papa – Bill – Marcea – Sherry at “FAT HAROLDS”! Note the pictures on the wall – Shag competitions over the years – they have a week of Shag Dancing every four months all over the town –

Live music in all the clubs.

Papa’s World – Calm before the storm – Sea Turtles.

We have volunteered to watch Sea Turtles’ nests to ensure they make it into the ocean.

Many nights – 7pm. to 11pm. are long – sitting – keeping watch on the nest and when it gets dark

blackout exists – no lighting – even phones.

This light could cause great harm to baby sea turtles.

So, we use red lights, not directly shining on the nest or the turtles.

Part of our training was when we volunteered.

The beginning of sunset – OIB – just before dusk – in the distance a storm front is forming and coming our way.

Sunset – but we know a front is coming – hoping it stays out over the water.

We have endured rain before – huddling under walk ways until it passes –

but what scares us the most is lightning!

The front has moved to just offshore – with lightning in the distance 10 miles away.

For safety reasons – if it gets within 7 miles – we leave the beach!

In this picture, you can see the rain coming down on the water.

It was okay when we saw flashes but could hear no thunder.

Then it became flashes and thunder!

Another storm front came from the NW and moved in over the SE – time to leave which is what we did.

This was the 4th time we have left because of lightning!

All part of volunteering for the protection of Sea Turtles!

Papa’s World – Meeting Old Friends from Tile Plant Days! At BLUE DRUM!

On The ICW – in Little River – sits BLUE DRUM – a restaurant that we have begun to frequent!

Next door to a marina – it opened a few months ago and we have been there three times!

One of the highlights for us is watching the boat traffic on the ICW – while eating lunch –

and seeing them dock and come up to eat!

You can sit on the covered porch or inside at the bar and tables or go down by the dock under umbrellas – protected from the harsh sun!

Peggy and Sherry looking out over the railing to the umbrellas and the ICW and boat docking!

The wind here cools things down with gentle breezes.

Our table is in the foreground – mostly shaded by the covered roof on the deck.

Next door is the boat marina where a neighbor of ours stores his boat.

We left here and went down toward Barefoot Landing before coming back.

We visited with Peggy and Adam Lawrence – who Sherry and I worked with back at the American Olean Tile Company in Olean, N.Y.

Adam was head of the Process – Engineering Department and my boss.

He now runs a very successful consulting business from Lancaster, Pa.

Sherry – Papa – Adam and Peggy – we have met up for the last couple of years when they come back each year to NMB for their vacation which they have done for years!

Great to see friends from WNY and talk about the past and future – at BLUE DRUM on the ICW!

Note the new add-on deck – done since our last visit a few weeks ago!

Papa’s World – FROM THEN TO NOW!

My very early years were growing up in a little town in NWPA known as Eldred.

Not big – about 800 to 1000 in a good year!

My youth was spent roller skating – playing Kick the Can with neighborhood kids.

Throwing apples at the train cars as they sped past.

Smoking corn silk in a corncob pipe.

Playing in the sawdust hill up the street and sleeping out on the front porch in an old army bag of my brothers-in-law.

I had to walk from our home on North Main Street all the way across town to South Main Street and the High School – grades 1 through 12!

Often I would walk the tracks until the creek and then along the sidewalk.

One day – I was wearing my Davy Crockett Coon Skin hat – I stopped and put it on the bridge railing and then stuck my head through to look down at the water.

And there I was stuck!

My ears popped out and I could not pull my head back through.

Needless to say, the fire department came to the rescue – embarrassing my older brother by ten years who was in H.S. then.

Pictured here is the OLD HIGH SCHOOL where I attended until the end of grade four!

They built a brand new Elementary school for grades K thru 6 –

And combined three communities – Eldred – Duke Center and Rixford and Eldred Township.

The front windows were first grade – taught by Mrs. Shields.

It was a grand old building – I think built in the late 1800s.

In the winter we would sled ride down the hill to the right which also was a large cemetery.

Eldred, Pa. was before the movie “STAND BY ME”!

What you saw in that movie was exactly as it was in our little town where everyone knew your name –

and if you did anything wrong – your parents knew all about it before you got home!

Today – we live in the South – near the border of N.C. and S.C. – by the beaches!

My childhood memories have followed me here along with contact with friends I grew up with.

I do not get back there often – staying in touch with the few relatives I have left.

My family I grew up with are all gone and are in the cemetery up in Barden Brook.

We are 12 to 15 hours away – a long drive and no close airport other than Buffalo which still requires over a two-hour drive and a rental car.

Sherry – Papa – Pam – wife of my childhood buddy – grade school until graduation – Bobby!

We had many adventures that I can not put on here and today see each other about once a year.

We played sports together all those years – and now we have memories we talk about!

We are seniors in our sunset years yet living life to the plus – they RVing and us living our dream of the Salt Life.

My other best buddy along with Bobby – Jimmy – played years and years of softball and now golf!

Staying in touch – sharing good times in the NOW of my life!

Jimmy is also from that same little town!

PAPA’S WORLD – VIBES – SENIOR LIVING – MEMORIES – THE SALT LIFE!

Papa’s World – A boy named HENRY!

In my many nights of Turtle Nest sitting – I came to the conclusion that it is about much more than protecting Sea Turtles!

One week in particular – a young boy – 12 years old – would always seek me out when he came to the nest!

His name was Henry – and even though I might be on the opposite side of the nest – he made it a point of walking to the shoreline and then coming back up the rope to where I stood!

He would talk to me – ask me questions and ask if he could be an intern next year.

I gave him the information – and answered all that I could to his questions.

He reminded me so much of our grandson Bode –

he had that inquisitive nature.

He was polite – and after a while would say I have to go now – but I will be back again

and so he did – each day – searching until he found me.

I met his cousins and siblings – he would go into the water as I watched and body ride the waves.

Each day checking in to see if anything was happening to the baby turtle.

On his last night of vacation – he came up to me and said he would be leaving in the morning –

I said to him it was a pleasure meeting you and if I do not see him again – good luck and follow your dream of being an intern here at OIB.

He looked at me and said, “You won’t be here next year”?

I said I would be here and he said then “I WILL SEE YOU”!

Yes HENRY – I will look for you for this made my day – a young person looking up to me –

This is a bonus in NEST SITTING for me – A YOUNG BOY NAMED HENRY!

Living our life one day at a time! PAPA’S WORLD – SUMMERTIME – FAMILY and FRIENDS!

Papa’s World – We help another Turtle Nest team!

DISCLAIMER: The work for protected Sea Turles is authorized by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission – PERMIT ST020232

We now go to the beach at dusk – joining other teams in helping where ever we can!

So goes our Senior living years!

Below is a beach sunset at Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. Warm – water is warm – crowds have gathered –

and we are assigned the edge of the water – keeping people informed and back from the trench!

The beachgoers line the ropes and peer up the trench – which was made for the baby turtles to make their way to the ocean – LOGERHEADS!

The nest was being opened after 75 days!

It was colder than usual in Spring and early Summer with lots of rain.

This formed a crust at the entrance to the nest making it hard for the little turtles to break through.

Being not hot also made the hatching go up to day number 75 which at that time the OIBSTPO is given permission by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission to “OPEN” the nest!

When this happens the team goes into training mode – each with duty and as in our case –

lend a hand and foot to help out!

They emerge from the nest and head for the Ocean – sound and sight guide them – the ocean WHITE CAPS – their instinct is to go toward the light!

The White Caps represent that.

Heading toward the ocean along the trench made just for the reason to get them to and into the surf!

Team members are there to guide them by placing a gloved hand down on the sand to direct them if they try to climb the edge and go in another direction.

If they flip over – do not help them – they are ingrained to right themselves.

Bright lights from outdoor lights can draw them to that direction so we ask that vacationers turn out the lights outside.

Most accommodate – as foxes wait in that direction.

Getting them to the water and into the surf is what volunteering is all about –

being educated along the way – three to four nights of information from the training leader.

Going down the trench – heading for the water – the crowd is now in the hundreds – lining the trench and

spread out along the beach –

we now have eight volunteers lateral along the dry sand spaced out to keep the people back and to keep everyone calm as the surf washes the babies back among their feet!

“FREEZE – DON’T MOVE we calmly say together!

We keep our eyes glued to the babies – and they make it into the water and ZOOM out to sea!

One more baby SEA TURTLE makes it thanks to volunteers – the satisfaction of being a help in the protection of an endangered species!

Cassidy – Taylor – Bode – our three youngest grandchildren – always when they come to visit – we let them pick a mini golf course to play on.

This time it was in North Myrtle Beach at the “VOLCANO” and they played the course inside the mountain!

Cassidy – who eventually won – takes her putt toward the hole!

I thought it to be too dark inside with the colored lighting!

Bode tries his skill – he came in second! It was unique in that it was all air-conditioned inside and hot outside!

Papa’s World – Early evening on the beach when storms collide!

Sitting on Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. – it is after 7:00 pm. – the sun is slowly sinking in the West –

and clouds are forming in the East and the West!

Storms are going to collide – rain – thunder and lightning and wind.

Looking S.W. – in the distance faint flashes of lightning! Wind picking up – it is getting dark on the horizon!

And from the S.E. – another front is moving in – in the distance lightning flashes – storm brewing!

The front approaches from the S.E. – punching toward the S.W. – soon they will collide –

we must decide to stay or leave!

Time to leave – get the grandkids off the beach – we can hear thunder from the S.E. and from the S.W.!

We made it back to our car and almost home some 5 miles away and it hit!

Strong winds – rain – lightning and wind. THUNDER as I pulled the car into the garage.

SHERRY AND OUR FRIENDS AND HER GIRLFRIENDS!

Papa’s World – We are loving life!

We are living our dream – living on the N.C -S.C. border – close to so many really fine golf courses!

Our close friends live 35 minutes away and we get together often – golf and dinner.

We are so close to a couple beaches – 15 minutes and we are on the sand at either one.

We get to watch the change over every weekend – much as we did in our younger years when we vacationed at the beach – now we live it every day.

The footprints disappear only to be made over and over again each day.

No more snow and ice – yes it does get cold – but by midday, it is bearable to be out and about.

Living life one day at a time!

We have now watched our oldest granddaughter graduate from college – sad that soccer has ended with her – but happy that it continues with her sister in her junior year at college.

We have volunteered at the memory care unit and now the SEA TURTLE PROTECTION program for N.C.

Bode – his bed is a single pull-out in our master bedroom – he heads there and helps to set it up!

He makes his bed before he is to sleep in it – a lot like his older sister Cassidy!

Cassidy has taken the front bedroom – everything is neat and has its place – the sheets turned down –

Her stuffed animal and pillows were arranged.

Her PJ’s laid out – she is so organized!

Her comfort blanket spread out at the foot of the bed.

Taylor has chosen the blue room – the family Mt. Jewett memories room.

She places everything on the bed – clothes dropped where she took them off.

She loves her alone time – and while it is not messy – she does not have the organized – everything in its place thing as does Cassidy!

In each their own way – they have their own style – grandkids are priceless!

Family – friends – neighbors, and people from all walks of life – we live life one day at a time.

A sense of humor – laughing and exploring is what we love about each other and our life together.

This is my blog and our life together – PAPA’S WORLD – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog my contact: fitztdf@fitztdf

Over 1000 blogs on this site – enjoy them – have a breakfast drink and sit back and enjoy life as we see it!

PAPA’S WORLD – a product of the above – thanks for reading and have a great day!

Papa’s World – FIVE COUSINS!

They have been excited for about two months – our three grandkids – Bode – Taylor and Cassidy –

knowing that when they come home with us to stay two weeks – that Sherry’s sister will also

have her Two Granddaughters! Oliva and Maya.

They met them a few months ago – and it was friends at first sight!

All FIVE of them to the left – the four girls – Cassidy – Taylor – Oliva – Bode and then Maya going into the water.

We have activities planned for them each day for five days.

The weather is warm – here we took them to the beach at early dusk – the water is really warm

and while a few people on the beach – it was nice to sit back and enjoy the sunset.

There was a Sea Turtle nest nearby and we got to talk to the people – while the grandkids were walking the surf –

The first day was a success – they swam for an hour in our community pool –

love it when things come together –

living our salt life and our dream community.

PAPA’S WORLD – FIVE COUSINS ON THE BEACH – another day in our life in the South!

Papa’s World – Preparing Turtle Nest for watching!

DISCLAIMER: The work for protected Sea Turtles is authorized by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

PERMIT: ST020232

The volunteers of Ocean Isle Beach are in the dozens and dozens – from walking the beach looking for

“TURTLE TRACKS” to riding an ATV along the beach and dunes looking for the distinctive large

Tractor Tire coming up out of the water – then turning around and heading back to the water.

Thus – leaving buried her nest – to be found by these said volunteers who then put in place

protections to ensure the nest is safe!

The nest has been protected against predators and here – on day number 55 – the nest watchers gather

at 7PM. every night – to 11 PM. until the baby turtles have hatched.

In this picture – the top covering has been rolled back and a miro-phone buried eight inches and covered up close to the nest.

We now are listening for activity inside the nest to give us a better idea of when to expect the turtles to hatch and emerge.

You can see the yellow line running away from the nest down to a speaker set up for listening.

As team members watch – 10 members to each team – the leader prepares to bury the microphone.

Soon the yellow wire is to be run back to where the team members have their chairs set up behind the rope-off area.

The roped-off area with team chairs and the ramp for the baby turtles extends all the way to the water.

This whole process on OIB is done by volunteers – there are currently 28 nests and each will require a team consisting of 10 members!

They are continually educating the public and children who are fascinated by this process.

PAPA’S WORLD – PREPARING SEA TURTLE NEST FOR WATCHING!

Papa’s World – Storm moves in while Sea Turtle Nesting!

Disclaimer: The work for protected Sea Turtles by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission –

PERMIT – ST020232

The storm was building while we were there at the beginning of 7PM.

The clouds drifted in and you could see the front coming from the West.

Because of how the coastline curves – OIB almost faces South!

The sky to the North West was getting dark.

The clouds are moving in and behind them in the distance is lightning!

View down the beach toward the West end – the wind picked up and radar showed lightning strikes some 13 to 15 miles away!

Sherry still talking to folks but we were watching the weather on our phones!

Around 9PM. the team leader said it was time to go – so we picked up – packed everything up and got the trench smooth in case they hatched when no one was there!

Safety first – be off the beach if lightning strikes are within 10 miles!

Thanks for reading – we were off the beach and had reached home by 9:20 PM. and it opened up with a downpour – wind and lightning!

PAPA’S WORLD – STORM MOVES IN WHILE SEA TURTLE NESTING WATCH!!!!!

Papa’s World – Nest Sitting for SEA TURTLES!

Ocean Isle Beach – Disclaimer: The work for protected Sea Turtles by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Oermit ST020232.

We have joined not only the WALKING GROUP – but also the NEST PARENTS group starting on day 55 after the Sea Turtle has laid her eggs – of “Watching the nest ” until they have hatched.

This requires a team of 10 individuals to go through hands-on training while at the place nest for four hours in the early evening – each night until the Sea Turtles have hatched.

Hatching usually occurs between Day # 70 to Day # 75.

The team gathers as the Team Leader explains a phase of Sea Turtle Nesting – always reminding them that this is a public beach and part of the training is to educate people on just why we do this.

Everything you see in this picture has been installed by the Sea Turtle of OIB Protection volunteer organization.

At the beginning and end of each watch session – the volunteer team cleans and smoothes the trench from the nest to the water line.

Installing a rope barrier for crowd control and to make sure the baby turtles have a clear path to the water.

Team members place their chairs between the rope barrier and the trench to have easy access when the hatching begins.

Past history has been the babies will hatch after it cools down for the day and the sand is not so hot.

Those hours are generally 7Pm. to 11PM.

Team members interact with the spectators and encourage them to watch and ask questions.

There can be upwards of 200 to 300 people who stop by or bring their chairs to wait for the hatching!

The parents bring the children and the children bring their parents!

Nest sitting not only to keep a watch on the Sea Turtles hatching – but to share with the community

and teach what this whole process is all about – NEST PARENTS!

The team gathers while the team leader prepares the microphone buried in sand to “LISTEN”

to the baby turtles inside.

The crowds come each night – week to week different as the changeover occurs in rentals.

Each week starts over by teaching each group “WHY” we are here and how they can help.

People bring chairs – food and drinks and talk – to the team and amongst themselves.

Conversations with team members from Sunset Beach Turtle members – sharing information.

They are in blue shirts.

The female Sea Turtle does not start laying eggs until she is 25 years old – through DNA testing

done by cooperation between N.C. – S.C. – Ga. – and Northern Flordia –

they have traced a daughter – mother and grandmother Sea Turtle –

which places the grandmother Sea Turtle at more than 75 years old!

Papa – observing the team members and the people of OIB – SEA TURTLE NESTING!

Papa’s World – SEA TURTLE NEST PROTECTION!

Disclaimer: The work for protected Sea Turtles is authorized by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission – PERMIT: ST200232

The Sea Turtles Protection on Ocean Isle Beach is a volunteer organization.

Many – many volunteers dedicated to the Sea Turtles hatching and as many as possible reaching the waters of the Ocean.

Also – to protect TURTLE NESTS along the beach from predators and educate the public on the survival of the Sea Turtles who come to the beach to lay their eggs.

Nesting is usually done overnight – leaving huge TURTLE CRAWL TRACTS on the beach – digging a hole and laying the eggs.

The SEA TURTLE ten covers the nest, slowly crawls back to the ocean – the mother never sees the little turtles – and can lay eggs several more times.

The beach is patrolled by an ATV every morning before 5:30 am. and Beach walkers at 6am.

Nests are called in and a response team comes and verify the nest and sets up protection and takes GPS coordinates.

Female Sea Turtles only start producing eggs at the age of 25 years old –

Through DNA testing of eggs – they can be tracked all up and down the coast of N.C. – S.C. – Ga. –

and the Northern part of Florida.

They have the DNA of a daughter Turtle – its mother and its grandmother which would be at least 75 years old!

The Sea Turtles return to lay eggs all up and down the coast and sometimes come back to the same beach.

Thanks for reading and here are some pictures of the preparation to protect the nests.

Here the nest has been prepped for protection – the mesh rolled back to bury a microphone to listen to the babies moving around in the nest.

The sounds they make are then compared to several recorded sounds on an app on the leader’s phone.

You then compare the sounds to the app to try and pinpoint how many days are left before they hatch.

The team comes each night at 7PM. and sits for four hours – they will do this each night until the nest hatches.

Past data collected shows that the nest will hatch within this time frame but it can occur outside of this,

these are dedicated volunteers – it could stretch into weeks of watching and waiting!

Installing the microphone by burying it next to the nest at the same depth – it records people 50 to 75 feet away talking and moving about.

This is put down to keep foxes out of the nest – when they hatch this will be moved out of the way.

PAPA’S WORLD – SEA TURTLE NEST PROTECTION – ON OCEAN ISLE BEACH

Papa’s World – Living life in our senior years!

Our SENIOR years are here – we are close to the middle 70s. Yet we are still active – always exploring!

Here we are on the marshes of the ICW – near OIB N.C.

We moved here for the weather ( we both hate snow-ice and cold) close to beaches and golf

and our dear friends are only 40 minutes away!

Have a sense of humor – be kind and share a smile!

When family visits – the sunsets but rises to begin a new day with them!

One of our walks on the beach brings us a Turtle Nest – so we became involved – walking early mornings on Turtle Beach Patrol – looking for signs of turtles – protected by the state of N.C.

Disclaimer: The work for protected SEA TURTLES is authorized by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission – PERMIT ST020232

Papa’s World – SHERRY – committed to TURTLE NESTING!

The Work for protected SEA TURTLES is authorized by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission

PEERMIT ST020232

A nest on OIB – Sherry and I have committed to walking the beach and she committed to sit and observe the nest until hatching.

This involved TEN TEAM MEMBERS who started on a specific day of the nest being laid –

They go down at 7PM. and stay until 11PM each night until they hatch.

Each member is given a task to perform upon arrival and during the hatching.

This must be performed each night – and the nest is checked each morning by the ATV-GATOR patrol

and daily checked by the OIB police patrol.

When the walkers observe a Turtle having come ashore through the gigantic crawl tracts –

A verification occurs and a team will ready the nest by adding protection and roped off.

This is all done by volunteers – there also is fast response teams and relocation teams

in event the nest is in a dangerous area of survival, and it is moved very carefully.

Predators are watched for and everything for the hatching is provided to insure safe passage to the ocean.

PAPA’S WORLD – REFLECTIONS – FRIENDS and FAMILY – living in N.C.

Papa’s World – That old house and phone number!

Funny how that remains in my mind after all these years – that home has been in our family since around 1944!

I grew up there and my mother was almost 98 years old when she passed away.

My mother Mary – everyone knew her – everyone honked their horn to her as she sat on the front porch.

Many – many people would stop just to sit down and talk to her,

That old front porch with the family I grew up with – sister Donna and her husband Bill – my mother and my brother Roger to the right.

When he left to go to college – I moved into his front bedroom when I was eight years old.

There were railroad tracks behind the house and the trains at night with their clack-clack sound would make me sleepy.

Out front was the main street and I could hear the traffic at night.

And to this day I still know the phone number and the post office box number.

Somewhere in the deep recess of my mind is the combination of that P.O. Box!

I left that house in 1967 and in 1982 married Sherry – now here we are 41 years later.

My memories of NWPA and WNY where we spent the first 50 years of our lives – remains in my memories to this day – just like that house and phone number!

Papa’s World – neighbors get together to celebrate July 4th.

A group of neighbors met at the clubhouse to celebrate the 4th. of July.

A couple neighbors precooked hot dogs while others brought dishes to pass –

the screened room off the pool offered shade –

Everyone pitched in and a good time was had by all.

Tables and food and decorations – and following are pictures of the neighborhood get-together.

A little music and some fun dancing.

65 to 70 neighbors came to enjoy one another company – name tags so we could all get to know one another.

We do have a few children in the community – and of course, they went into the pool to cool off!

Bringing the neighborhood together.

Thanks to everyone who came to meet other neighbors and celebrate the 4th. of July!

SHERRY AND PAPA – NEIGHBORS GET TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE 4TH OF JULY! HGD!!!!!

Papa’s World – Lunch at Blue Drum – Little River – ICW.

One of the many explorations we make is new establishments on the ICW!

Blue Drum is one of them – having opened in late May or early June.

When the family was here – we had a pontoon boat and we stopped in there for lunch –

tying up at their dock.

You can sit here under umbrellas or under a roof near the bar.

When we were here before we sat down where these people were sitting – using two tables –

this time we sit under the roof near the bar and the restaurant with seating inside.

We had the perfect view of boats coming by in both directions and enjoying the breeze off the ICW!

The food is very good – I had Beef Tips in gravy over rice!

The order Sherry had was Mac-Cheese- and Lobster bits.

Our lunchtime bill – mid twenty’s with drinks! Not bad!

Our view directly in front of us – with the docks for the visiting boaters – it was really comfortable under the shade of the porch deck!

PAPA’S WORLD – LUNCH AT BLUE DRUM – LITTLE RIVER, S.C. ON THE ICW!

Papa’s World – Before the storm – looking for shells!

The day was beautiful in the morning – but later that day a storm was coming!

So – we decided to go to Vareen Gardens – on the state line of N.C and S.C.

Sherry wanted some shells for a project she was doing!

We are so close to two beaches but the shell hunting is better than a few others! Here is our beach – OIB!

Our destination is Vaneer Gardens right along the coast of the ICW – recently on our day with family

on a pontoon boat – we passed right by here!

No shoes – no socks – just shorts – shirts and sandals for wading in the water!

This area is loaded with Oyster Shells and that is what she was looking for – tons of them!

Papa – looking at shells people have signed and some are hung from the tree here!

We found what she needed and then headed back home just as the storm rolled in!

The storm is approaching – thunderstorms here are terrific – lightning – thunder and sometimes downpours!

This day – we enjoyed the early morning beach and then a trip to Vareen Gardens – found shells and returned home and then the storm hit!

Papa’s World – when old friends visit from NVA!

Jim and Claudia – from Reston Va. She has a fantastic voice and sang in Ireland.

Jim – a Vice President of a Fortune 500 company – was responsible for building the first Data Centers

in Ireland and four more in Europe in the ’90s.

Jim and Claudia – here visiting and exploring a nearby community for retirement.

Claudia has a fantastic voice and sang all over Ireland and back here.

We met them through other friends – and on our birthdays she calls us up and sings to us!

Another friend – Nancy – who now lives in Charleston with her husband John – came up to visit.

We all know one another and her husband could not make it for prior commitments to their church.

Her husband also sings in opera.

Nancy also attended our former church along with John.

Papa – Jim – Claudia – Nancy and Sherry are out to early dinner or as we call it LINNER!

We are talking about a trip to Charleston to see John and Nancy.

A lot of NVA friends are going to end up close to us!

WHEN OLD FRIENDS VISIT FROM NORTHERN VIRGINIA!

Papa’s World – OIB open-air concert near the beach!

Not us! We explore – we look for things to do and things to see!

Our view from our chairs at OIB park – just a short block from the beach – every Friday night during the Summer season – a free concert for the public – this one featured BLACKWATER –

A local ( Sunset Beach) eight-member band playing classic rock and BEACH MUSIC!

The concert starts at 6:30 pm. but people start putting their chairs down long before that – here we are at 5:30 pm. it is already more than half full with empty chairs.

We managed to squeeze in this spot and saved two more spaces for our neighbors Diane and Steve.

Papa – Steve – Diane and Sherry – and behind us is the crowd – and just as significant to the right and left of us!

We can attend an open-air concert like this almost every night of the work week as most towns around us have them on different nights.

Diane and Steve danced the night away to classical rock music. Carolina Beach Music is also performed.

On Wednesday night, open-air music is at Sunset Beach Park, where we often go.

At the end – we just sit and talk letting the crowd disperse and usually only a few dozen people are left sitting!

The nights are warm and you can watch the setting sun in the western sky.

Or take a walk to the beach and sit and talk.

Thank you for reading PAPA’S WORLD – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

SHERRY – OPEN-AIR CONCERT NEAR THE BEACH IN OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C.

Papa’s World – Sunset at Sunset Beach – nature’s wonder.

Good day – we are close to this beach – a short 12-minute drive and then the walkway over the dunes to the beach.

The walkway is long and goes over the sand and dunes – shrubs – small trees and a habitat for all kinds of native species.

Along the way – you can see the sun beginning to dip below the horizon – many bushes line the walkway.

Looking back along the walkway to the beach houses – this is the far end of Sunset Beach – from here on it is BIRD ISLAND –

no beach houses – just sand and dunes and ocean surf!

You may find it hard to park here as it is limited and no blocked driveways and no parking allowed signs.

When you can find parking – tires are not allowed on bike paths or sidewalks.

But – when you do find one it is worth it to be able to walk this out to the beach.

Sherry and Papa at the end of the walkway and the ramp down to the beach – the sunset is fantastic, behind us is BIRD ISLAND – nothing but sand – dunes, and surf – a mile plus from here is the KINDRED SPIRIT MAILBOX which has existed for more than forty years. Google it and read the history of this historic place.

Sherry walking down the ramp to the beach in the sunset – they sky always change here depending on the clouds!

After walking on the beach – time to head back and the final rays of sun through the foliage on the walk back.

Papa’s World – before it gets HOT – early morning OIB – sitting on the beach!

It has gotten HOT – 90 plus degrees – high humidity – no rains – BEACH TIME!

We do our morning Turtle Beach Patrol at 6am.

We also pick up garbage on the beach – and are done between 7 and 7:30 am.

We decided to go back home and return by 8:30 for a couple hours of early morning beach time before it gets really hot!

No one is here at that time in the morning – and walking down to the pier and beyond in the surf – the water was warm – our dream-salt life!

Looking in the other direction you can see hardly anyone is here! SOLITUDE!

Feet in the sand – sitting under an umbrella – taking it easy in retirement – one day at a time!

Under the umbrella – BEFORE IT GETS HOT – EARLY MORNING ON OIB – SITTING ON THE BEACH!!!!!!

Papa’s World – strange discovery while on Turtle Patrol.

Sherry and I signed up to walk the East end of OIB during the TURTLE SEASON and report and nests we should find.

On this section of OIB – there are no houses – only sand and surf for about one mile!

A great place to walk – hearing only the surf and some birds.

We walk all the way to the point and a little around it toward the ICW side.

Just before the point, we came upon this sight – a chair with a pair of pants draped over the back – a waterproof shoe in the surf – tackle boxes all open – a battery with jumper cable hooked up –

fishing poles and a pole holder for the poles.

STRANGE – no one around!

And then around the corner out of sight – two fishing poles in their holders – bait on but laying in the sand and no one around except a boat with a man standing on it!

It was a deputy with a badge and he ask me if this was my stuff!

I told him no and around the corner was the chair and tackle boxes and more poles and I held up the shoe and said we found this also.

He told me to just place the shoe by the pole which I did and he got on his walkie-talkie to the police department.

He thanked us and said he would take care of it.

The chair and all the equipment just sitting on the beach and no one was around!

We continued our TURTLE WALK – not seeing any signs and went back to our car!

On the way back two police trucks and an ATV passed us going toward the chair and poles.

Also – our walk time is spent picking up trash off the beach and then report in what we see as far as signs of turtles!

Sherry is about to throw our trash collection away from our TURTLE BEACH PATROL!

PAPA’S WORLD – LAUGHS – HUMOR – GOOD THOUGHTS!

Papa’s World – Our neighbors took us to dinner at BUMMZ – in Myrtle Beach!

Diane and Steve – our neighbors who also happen to be from WNY and have a cottage on

Rushford Lake near where we lived!

They now live two houses from us and we met them as we were visiting our building.

A lot in common and we walk almost every day.

They know Olean and Portville where we worked and lived.

We had never heard of this place and it sits right on Myrtle Beach between all the 20-plus stories hotels!

It was very nice and the layout reminded me of Snookies and Bouys – both in North Myrtle Beach.

We ate outside and they took us there for our Anniversary and as a gesture of friendship!

Here is the view from the patio of Bummz – from the dining terrace.

The view South from the beach entrance to Bummz!

A walk toward the Ocean from the beach entrance and the lifeguard station.

Sherry returned from the water to see how warm it was and it was warm!

Our temps have risen in the Ocean to the mid to high 70s!

Papa’s World – The skies of where we live!

Sunset from our front yard – end of the driveway – we really do not have to go to Sunset Beach

to observe this – but then again – there you have Sand and Surf!

We selected this lot because of how the Sun rises and sets – we can see both from the driveway.

Most of our storms come from the West – as we face directly South out on the back patio.

The winds also come from the East – part of the ocean – but that is rare.

A little humor to start your day! LOL

We also live close to the ICW – and its many access points – all within less than 30 minutes drive for us!

Here is a view from Vareen Gardens – on the N.C. – S.C. border – a 20-minute drive for us.

Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. – THE SKIES OF WHERE WE LIVE – livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – From Lake Holiday to Cameron Woods – family vacation.

Our daughter – Debby and husband Mike – Sherry – papa – Ella – Maddy and Sarah – from NVA!

They came and spent nearly a week with us in Cameron Woods Community- N.C.

We had planned this for a couple months – and as always – tears when they left!

Mike – Steve – Sherry and Diane – both neighbors and friends – came along with us on the ICW!

Sherry had attended a fundraiser for the food pantry put on by our church.

She purchased $20.00 in tickets and her name was drawn twice –

once for breakfast at a dinner and the second time as the winner of a 9-hour day on the ICW

with a PONTOON BOAT!

Mike – Steve and myself piloted us down and back up the ICW stopping at the new place to eat on the ICW-

THE BLUE DRUM! We had a great lunch and fun time boating.

On the way back – we stopped on the back side of Bird Island – where boats pull up to the beach and you hang out on the beach!

Papa – Mike and Steve stand on the ICW beach and watch a very large boat that had just come up the channel from the ocean and passed where we had beached the pontoon boat!

Maddy looked out over the cove on the backside of OIB at OIB FISH COMPANY where stopped for drinks and appetizers.

Papa’s World – Our early years! 6-25-82

Our wedding day – June 25th. 1982 – starting out together after dating for 1 1/2 years!

It seems like only yesterday yet it is over 41 years ago and longer since we first started dating.

Both divorced – both had two children – her two daughters – my two sons –

We planned vacations on a budget – packing food to stop and have lunch on our way to a destination.

We had an old 12-passenger van – but fun trip.

We lived in the country – our driveway was 1/10 of a mile long – ice in winter –

It took me days to push and mow the lawn.

The early years – Sherry and her sisters. We were close to her family – often spending weekends with her parents!

Camping – tents and fifth-wheel and tag-along camper.

Our dream back then was warm weather – beach – surf and sand – vacations – wanting to stay!

We explored our states and country – sometimes by ourselves – mostly with kids –

providing what we could – money was tight.

But – we were happy – and we both worked for AOTC and DAL-TILE.

Along the way was National Gypsum, Private, Armstrong, and Mohawk.

The early years – Sherry and her sisters. In the mountains of the Kinzua Valley – Mount Jewett – Pa.

Our family was aging – the kids were gone to college and work.

We were thinking of transferring to within the company.

Several openings came up – but not what we wanted.

Then in 1999 – we applied for transfers and moved to NVA – still with Dal-Tile –

along the way we remained close to our friends for many years – one couple left for Wilmington, N.C. a few years before we went to NVA, and later the other couple transferred to Va.Beach.

We stayed in touch and in June of this year they all came to our new home to play golf –

FRIENDS FOREVER!

Our early years have now transformed into our senior years – now retired – and our dream came true!

We found our beach – sand – surf and warm weather – now our families come to visit.

Papa’s World – Starting your day with good thoughts and humor.

Be happy – I try to think positively each day – I look for positive news articles or historical events.

Bring humor into your day – laugh and smile and greet people whom you don’t know with a smile.

After all “SMILES ARE FREE”!

I take out all the negativity I can from my life – news – papers – TV – it can calm my life and I just do not need all the noise from others!

Sunrises – sounds of the beach – birds – waves and the start of a new day!

Golfing for us is just getting out in nature – fresh air and green grass and if possible – sights along the ICW!
