Papa’s World – My first day of work at American Olean Tile co.

It was June 5th. 1967 – I was to report to Human Resources at 8AM.

My ride was a 1957 Chevy Bel-Air –

Aqua and White.

I had just graduated from H.S. –

and the previous 8 months – I had spent 51 days in the hospital –

In traction in bed with a Catheter for 41 of those days.

There were days that I did not know if I would ever walk again.

I was in a car accident –

I am lucky to be alive.

I came home in a wheelchair and then the rehab began.

I went to crutches and then to a cane.

I had been an athlete – and now I was learning to walk all over again.

I had a broken pelvis and a torn Urethea tube.

But – I had a wonderful support group.

I arrived 15 minutes early – parked my car and walked around the front of the “TILE PLANT”-

To the front entrance – down the stairs and reported to the lady at the window –

Who I was and what I was doing there.

I had a paper bag for lunch.

She told me to take a seat and soon two other guys came in.

They were Bonas students and were there for Summer Work.

We talked and then the HR man – named Jim – came and said hello –

Told us to wait and the foreman named Jim would be right there.

I remembered being in awe of all the surroundings.

Not knowing what to expect and then Jim was there –

said to follow him and we went down the stairs – turned left down the hall –

And through double swinging doors to the sights and sounds of PLANT LIFE!

It was HOT as we walked right down beside the old number one kiln.

The noise – I shall never forget and the fork trucks – the people working –

Ear plugs were expected to be worn and safety glasses which they had given us.

It got hotter as we walked down toward what I later found out was the mounting room –

and turned left at the lab.

Jim kept walking and turned left at the lab and we proceeded through a large doorway that had a metal fire door – IN CASE OF FIRE?

What had I got myself involved in?

The first stop was the men’s locker room and we were assigned lockers – mine was number 10!

There was a place to take a shower with three shower heads.

Benches attached to the floor were in front of the metal lockers – all a tan color with numbers on them

Through another doorway were the urinals and stalls and a closet-

With a large piece of cardboard on the floor –

Here is where FRIDAY sleeps for his lunch break Jim says!

Then it was back out and turn right and walk down a slight ramp.

This he said was the SERVICE and BODY PREP departments.

Around the corner to the left was the time clock –

Punch in there – put your card in the rack and don’t punch in late or punch out early!

WELCOME TO THE TILE PLANT!

Herb was the supervisor of the Body Prep Department and Jim was the supervisor of the Service Dept.

There was no office – they both had stand-up metal desks side by side.

It was noisy and dust in the air-

here is where they mixed the clay bodies together and it went up four stories!

Next – he said since I would be there the longest and the other two just the summer-

I would be trained in Body Prep – as an extra and used as needed.

I then met the other workers in Body Prep –

and started training as can man.

Then onto weighmaster and compactor operator.

Then the Forty Cubic and soon Stain – making the colors for the tile before mixing/

That went on for three months and I knew every job in the department.

Someone named Samuel was fired and the opening was on the second shift-

No one bid on it and I was assigned the job.

I worked as a weighmaster on the second shift for 6 1/2 years –

TEN HOUR DAYS – 3pm. to 1 am. – no breaks – eat on the fly – 2 hours OT every day!

My starting pay back then in 1967 – was $1.72 an hour plus OT!

There were four of us on the second shift and at that time the rest of the plant was all done and gone-

by 11PM.

It was a dirty dusty job – but also no one bothered you.

My job was to weigh up 1200-pound batches that looked like Talcum powder on stainless steel scales.

I had three systems North – South and East.

I added the stain of the color we were running –

I had a large control panel that showed me the entire system and what step the batch was in.

I had a chair next to the panel and it took 12 minutes to run out before I weighed the next batch.

So I took that time to READ – whatever I could get my hands on.

The whole time while watching the power panel.

The only time I was not doing that – we had color changes and we had to clean up the entire process-

start to finish

They gave us two hours for a wash job and one hour for a brush job.

Usually one or two a night.

meanwhile, you had to keep the other systems running.

No one was there in management to bother me – I was up on the third level

It was noisy with the hum of the units running.

One other worker was there with me on the other side and two men on the ground level.

That was my first job at AOTC – and I lasted 47 1/2 years.

I held many jobs in those years

I ended up running the two departments I started in.

I was in management the last 12 years we were there before we both transferred to NVA!

Down in NVA – I worked in seven different locations –

The beginning was just the tip of the bottle in the different hats I wore for what-

would become DAL-TILE – part of MOHAWK INDUSTRIES!

Sherry and I met there and were married on June 25th. 1982 –

We both retired from DAL-TILE – AMERICAN OLEAN TILE CO. after 791/2 years of total service.

Papa’s World – Eldred – where everyone knew your name.

Sherry and Pam – Bobby’s wife –

And Bobby was my buddy growing up.

I was born on 5-7-1949 –

and he was born that same year.

We played sports together-

we stayed at each other’s home.

It was a time of youthful experiences-

and I regret none of it!

Sleeping out – roaming the streets after curfew-

When a bit older –

sneaking a beer up on the hill.

Much later – there were four of us –

Jon – Freddy – Bobby and me.

Jon had a small car –

it was I think an NSU PRINZ or something like that.

Up the brooks, we would go –

“COLT 45 QUARTS!”

Also the hollows and Indian Creek.

Those are special memories.

Papa – Bob and Pam.

We did not smoke –

had a couple beers but was not in any trouble –

mostly away from everyone.

Sports – and a man called Bud –

a father of one of our buddies – Mike –

Formed a group called THE EXPLORERS –

sort of a step beyond the Boy Scouts.

We took canoe trips down the Alleghany River-

Went to a Steelers game in Pittsburg, Pa.

We organized the first public dances at the Boros Tennis Courts.

The money we earned paid for our camping trips –

and other trips we went on.

At one time we had around twenty members.

Growing up in a small town –

everyone knew your name and parents.

And I can remember “PARTY LINES”!

That was a long time ago!

This was the era of black and white TVs.

And you got three channels –

ABC – CBS and NBC!

And you got up off the couch to change the channel!

A time of TV antennas.

My father came home one day –

and said we would have COLOR TV!

And he put this clear plastic thing on the screen –

it was a band of green across the bottom-

A band of light blue across the top –

and a band of red-yellow in the middle!

That was our colored TV! LOL

Seeing the World when I was young –

I thought ELDRED was it!

The youthful eyes of innocence.

My parents would take us to the OLEAN MOOSE on Friday nights!

My mother was Catholic-

and NO MEAT on Fridays.

We would go to the Olean Moose for their BEER BATTERED FISH FRYS!

And – if we had been on good behavior –

they would let us walk to the movie theater-

to see a movie;

I remember seeing OLD YELLER there!

Growing up when young on the streets of Eldred Pa.

The dinner – Slavin’s Bar and Grill – Scotties and the Gold Eagle.

So many memories to be told in another blog.

1800’s dirt main street in my hometown of Eldred, Pa.

Papa’s World – Past Memories – moving forward.

As we move into the new dawn of a new year –

We – Sherry and I –

reflect back –

Since we packed up and moved in 1999 –

The company we worked for –

American Olean – Dal-Tile –

Closed the operations in Olean, N.Y. –

After 99 1/2 years of operations!

IN 2012!

We were fortunate to have transferred –

13 years before they closed the doors.

While the rest of the company –

owned by Mohawk – still operates –

They also closed the remaining factories of A.O.T. C. – except one!

Today they mostly have the brand name.

That is the picture of the past –

many fond memories for both of us –

As to when we finally retired –

We had 79 1/2 years of service for the A.O.T.C.

and Dal-Tile brand!

Today – in retirement –

I often recall those early years memories –

I spent the first six and one-half years of my employment –

Working the second shift on ten-hour days –

From 3pm. to 1 am.

We worked straight through-

taking our break “ON THE FLY”!

Those were my very early years starting on 6-05-1967.

I still see the images of the three men I worked with –

during that time on the second shift.

There was “Frosty” –

who was the lead-man leader.

There was “GEORGE” –

whom I worked with upstairs by ourselves.

The was “SHORTY” –

who worked on the main level with “FROSTY”!

Our department was large – –

almost four stories high.

George and I worked on the third level.

It was a job in which I had to weigh up the product-

on a large scale –

Almost 1200-pound batches with five different ingredients.

The scales were stainless steel –

and each ingredient was like talcum powder.

All done by valves –

and air pressure.

A state-of-the-art production system-

that was installed a few years before I came to work there.

There were three systems – NORTH – SOUTH and EAST.

So we were doing three different products at the same time.

I also would start them up-

and with a power dump – put the stain or color into them.

The scales would run for 12 minutes –

with a large screw that would mix the powered clay together.

This would then empty out and go through an elevator –

to what they called THE GAYCO SEPARATOR.

I then would put the stain into what we called a mixer or blender and the clay body would flow into that.

I had 12 minutes between each batch –

and would use that time to clean up –

remove stains from an overhead conveyor –

And keep my area neat.

I had a chair that I could sit in –

and watch the big panel that was lit up and showed each stage of the process.

Red – Green and White and Yellow lights told me the different stages.

We would do color changes during the shift – –

Sometimes 2 or 3 and that would require –

full clean-ups with air- water, and vacuums.

During those times we kept the opposite systems going –

And as you can imagine –

it was a dusty operation during clean-ups!

There were times during the ten-hour shifts-

we did not have any clean-ups –

And once I got everything caught up –

I would sit right there –

and read while watching the panel.

I became sensitive to the changes –

in sounds from the equipment-

and from watching the panel –

to spot any malfunction –

and correct it!

I will write another blog on my time at the OLEAN TILE PLANT –

From 1967 to 1999 before I transferred.

Moving forward into a new year –

looking to the future with family and friends.

Papa’s World – Saint Bonaventure Golf Course.

Saint Bonaventure University Western New York outside of Olean N.Y.

We lived in this area most of our lives together

The hills – rolling meadows

the lush greenery and yes snow.

But we also belonged to the Bona’s Golf Course!

Situated right next to the very large cemetery

and right across the highway from the University –

sits a nine hole course where we attempted to play golf

sometimes twice a week!

There are special holes here I remember

one is at the tee box of number FIVE

where you are up on a knoll

looking down but out across the trees to the campus

and the hills in many colors of the fall.

Just a beautiful peaceful view.

And then number SIX

where I recorded my only HOLE IN ONE!

Looking across number TWO fairway to number THREE!

The beauty of the course in all seasons

well – in my thought – not SNOW! LOL

But people cross country ski here in the winter.

And now – a brand new clubhouse built overlooking the course

in the exact same place as the old one

which I all the time hit!

The new clubhouse at Saint Bonaventure University

The old club house held many memories

of dinners – events and celebrations for us to remember.

But now – it is brand new

offering a view of numbers one – two and three.

And in the splendor of the fall foliage

The last time we were there

the course was in excellent shape

and I still see the views in my mind.

The course can be challenging

and sort of lulls you to wonderment of the views.

Number SEVEN – very hard to hold the green

if you are short it will roll 75 yards back down the slope

too far and you are in a steep back with 12 in rough!

In its splendor – lush green – views for miles.

Thank you for reading Papa’s World

If you are ever in Western New York –

about 65 miles South of Buffalo and you play golf

Just across the road from Saint Bonaventure University

sits a nine hole course we learned to play together

Take the time to take it all in and play nine!

WHERE FRIENDS MEET THE FAMILY

FAMILY MEETS FRIENDS!

Papa’s World – Remembering the past!

Our first home together was way out in the country – some tem plus miles from the school –

for Debby and Tammy.

Our nearest neighbor was at the bottom of the driveway –

1/10th of a mile away, at the bottom of the driveway!

And then the next neighbor was-

across a huge field, and up the side of a hill.

It would take me 3 solid days of mowing with a riding mower – rest for a couple days and start over again.

The driveway had mowed grass on either side eight feet wide!

We lived here for five and one-half years – campfires –

cows in a pasture behind the house hidden by a tree line.

Debby would earn extra money by cleaning the neighbor’s house across the field.

School sports and activities required ten-plus miles each way –

and my son’s another ten miles on top of that!

Our cars seemed to be forever in motion –

and our workplace was six to eight miles away!

This was country – deer – turkeys – and all the other critters including bears.

But it was also a time of peace – church – raising kids –

and going on picnics to state parks,

Inviting friends up for campfires – visiting our parents –

mine some twenty-plus miles away and hers some forty-five miles away.

Our little home had three bedrooms – each girl had their own on the second floor –

and ours was just off the kitchen with a huge deck and glass sliding doors.

There was a living room with a wood-burning fireplace –

it was here I asked for her hand in marriage.

There was a kitchen with a table in it –

and a country door into the laundry room ( it was two parts – upper and lower)

a squirrel once got into the laundry room

and our cat caught it after a raucous round of chasing it all over that room!

At night before we put in a street light – you could star gaze and listen to the owls –

coyotes and other critters of the night!

It was way up on the end of the East Windfall Road in the Portville, N.Y. school district.

The road continued as a dirt road up and over the hill –

eventually turning back again to blacktop!

Going back toward Portville – you could take a right and go over the hill into Olean –

past the golf course and come out at the hospital.

After five and one-half years –

we put in an offer on a home at Pleasant Acres Drive-

on the other side of Portville behind the cider mill!

We would then live here for twelve and one-half years –

until the kids were in and out of college and we were empty nesters!

That will be another blog – but until then –

our first house together resides as great memories in my mind!

Sherry back when we lived way out in the country – 1982 –

REMEMBERING THE PAST – PAPA’S WORLD – my site: livinglifedoingitmyway.blog

Papa’s World – Meet old friends from 1999 – then showed them our house!

It had been a very long time – 1999 to be exact – we had left Western N.Y. and transferred to Northern Va.

We worked for Dal-Tile ( American Olean Tile) in Olean, N.Y.

We both were able to transfer within the company and went at first to Alexandria, Va.

Eventually, we lived in Fairfax and then to Brambleton – just behind the Dulles airport.

A co-worker of both of us named Brain and his wife April became friends of ours before we left.

He had transferred in from Lansdale, Pa.

He reached out to us and said he would be in North Myrtle Beach and wanted to know if we could get together – of course, we could and arranged to meet for lunch at Barefoot Landing at Crooked Hammock!

April and Brain – he and I were supervisors and Sherry Logistics.

We golfed a lot together and had many memorable times together.

Brian has since transferred to Gettysburg, Pa. in the Dal-Tile corporation and is looking to retire in two years and now has 40 years with the company.

After lunch, they followed us back to our house and we gave them a tour to see what they could buy in our area after retirement.

Pictures of our home and we will be here two years in July!

Meeting up with friends from back in WNY – and now we are spread out to N.C. and Pa.

Thanks for reading and thanks to Brian and April for reaching out so we could see one another again!

MEET OLD FRIENDS FROM 1999 – THEN TOOK THEM TO SHOW THEM OUR HOME!

Papa’s World – Teaching LOVE and RESPECT to our children in their youth!

Back in the mid to late 80s – we were youth group leaders for our Lutheran church in little Portville, N.Y.

One of our trips was to a retreat just outside Clarksville where this man once stayed for reflection – Thomas Merton.

He had a deep connection with the Franciscans at Saint Bonaventure University just outside Olean, N.Y.

At that time we went there – the University was maintaining the retreat – they may still be doing this.

Our pastor Dan – who married Sherry and me – was deeply involved in the youth group – so much so that he and I and a doctor of the congregation – took FOURTEEN YOUTHS – 7 to 12th. grade – canoeing on the Alleghany River as a trail run and later a whole week in the Algonquian Park in the far north of Canada for a week.

We went to the retreat to perform a blessing in each room marking the sign of the cross on the beams and headers of the doorways in charcoal ash.

Our purpose for those kids in the youth group was to teach love for all humans.

Looking back on each and every one of them in their now adult life – I think what we wanted to get across to them was a success.

Thomas Merton spent some of his time in this area reflecting on life and left a lasting impression on all of us that went to perform that blessing.

TEACHING LOVE AND RESPECT TO OUR CHILDREN IN THEIR YOUTH!

Papa’s World – after sixty two years – I am still a fan – Saint Bonaventure University – BONA’S

My dad was a big fan of the basketball team at Saint Bonaventure University!

He had season tickets and when they played away games –

He would either listen to them on the radio or go down to SLAVINS!

This was the local town bar he and his close friends would go to have a beer.

Russ and Tootie were the owners and BIG BONA’S FANS also.

Every game the radio would be on and dozens of people would lean close to listen!

To understand the fan base of this basketball team – you first have to know –

this is one of the smallest College Universities in the USA!

If they have over 2000 students -that would be large!

Yet – they are giant killers in Division one basketball!

Have been since the early ’50’s and to the present.

The campus sits in the magical mountains along the Alleghany river –

Just on the town line of OLEAN N.Y. and Alleghany N.Y.

Some 65 miles South of Buffalo.

Yet – they compete on the big stage year in and year out!

To get here – you have to fly into Buffalo and drive the 65 miles through the country and back roads to Olean.

Where you might secure a room in one of the few hotels in the town.

And that is the beginning of your game madness in the Reilly Center – seating some 5200 rabid fans.

Sitting on four sides right on the court!

Mind you – the student body is around 2000 – and the town of Olean on a good day is maybe 12,000.

Yet – while I was young – there was a waiting list for those season tickets.

My father finally got his!

The team has been in that time frame had a high ranking in different years

as Number two or three in the nation!

They have gone to the FINAL FOUR only to lose when they lost their big man –

Buffalo ” BOB LANIER” to a knee injury and out for out for the final game.

Many thoughts throughout the nation – they would of won!

Now – the promise of next year looms before us BONNIE FANS!

PRESEASON POLLS – if they indicate anything at all – has them at the following!

What hurt this year was not the starting five – who all come back – not one senior on the whole team.

Was the bench – not very deep – ( what there was – 3- transferred out)

and when one of there best players twisted his ankle early in the game against SEC LSU –

Well when he returned he was a shadow of himself.

They went on to lose by 11 points!

THE HOPES ARE HIGH FOR NEXT YEAR and that fan base –

from every small town around –

is looking at these preseason polls with hunger in their eyes.

Now the GOOD NEWS!

Early commitments seem to have shored up that bench.

Three have transferred out – hardly playing and could not support that really good starting five.

In their place as of April 13th. FOUR MAJOR RECRUITS ARE COMING!

Two are transfers – who can play right away –

One starting Shooting guard from the ACC – Wake Forest – Quadry Adams – 6′ 4″

One starting power forward from another ACC school – Pitt – Abdoul Karin Coulibaly- 6′ 8″

One high JUCO transfer center

that was recruited by the power five conferences – Oluwasegun Durosinm – 6′ 9″

And a high Canada prep player regarded as a top prospect –

Justin Ndjock Tadjone – a shooting guard listed at 6′ 8″

They still have three scholarships left.

BUT THE CALVARY HAS ARRIVED!

The bench is now there!

My dad -My father would of been so excited – he passed that excitement onto me those 62 years ago!

For years I would bend over close to that same radio and listen to those games –

I would do the same as he did – keeping score with X’S and O’S –

The names of each player written down and the fouls each had.

Yes – I did that and to this day – I watch them on national TV!

We – before we moved South – had those precious season tickets.

The fans right on top of that floor at the Reilly Center –

Rated as one of the most feared and toughest places to play in the entire country!

PAPA’S WORLD livinglifedoingitmyway.blog fitztdf@aol.com

IT IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THOSE YEARS COME FALL WITH THE BONNIES!

Fasten your seat belt – this little Division one University of some 2000 students and Friars

are gonna take you for a ride – who knows – just how far they will go-

They finished 16 and 5 with no bench – now they have one!

SAINT BONAVENTURE – THE LITTLE SCHOOL WHO COULD ONCE AGAIN SLAY GIANTS!

IT’S HAPPENED TWICE BEFORE and maybe – just maybe the third time is the CHARM!

We got to know one another through reunions

and have traveled to their home in Phoenix and them to ours before the pandemic.

We have maintained that friendship for the last ten years or so.

Here we are at the WALL in DC.

Reflections of the soul I call this.

Gerhard and Jennie – our son in laws parents

For the last 14 years or more – we have bonded with his parents.

Always visiting them when we lived in NVA.

They have come down to visit us in North Myrtle Beach.

In laws and friends – FAMILY!

Our little group get together to golf.

There are times we try to bring us all together to golf.

Wish it would happen more often.

But when it does – it is fun and guys vs. gals!

If we are not on our game – they will beat us! LOL

Papa’s World – another chapter on being homeless

“THE GOOSE WHISPER”

You look out the window – and there they are – 50 to 100 strong!

“GET OUT OF MY YARD” he shouts!

And out the door he runs!

They can wreck havoc on your yard! Leave nasty deposits –

so when walking in shoes or bare feet

you can feel it as you step on it!

Carol and Mike

We moved in almost 34 or 35 years ago –

right behind them at our old home in WNY!

We were neighbors for 12 or 13 years!

Sherry and Mike

We shared many moments of laughter –

racing riding lawn mowers –

playing friendly jokes on each other –

and me trying to compete with his beautiful lawn!

Sherry driving Mike’s boat

He has his own business – starting by himself

and today his crews go nationwide!

Carol now works with him after retiring from the college scene!

Together with their son – they have built this business

into a first class operation.

They purchased this home a year ago and then the boat.

We have all gotten together at various times –

but this is the first time in WNY at the lake house.

And it is beautiful!

Long dock leads to the flags and then the house.

Friends all these years – jokes – laughing –

he will never retire –

he loves what he has started and adding to all the time.

Just like his lawn all those years ago –

not one blade of grass – out of place – no weeds –

green – manicured to perfection.
