PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – Time – pictures – memories!

This past Christmas – decorations – lights and colors!

We had one tree outside on the covered porch –

One tree inside in the living room-

And one small tree in the enclosed Lanai!

Sherry does a fantastic decorating job!

I – do both trees that have decorations.

Just a picture for a memory of the holidays!

The same porch from the summer!

We always have flower pots –

but this year the deer have eaten everything we place outside!

I have used all types of sprays – none worked!

I ended up moving the pots inside the porch and near the walls.

That helped but it was always a pain to move in morning and night!

Just a picture of the past summer!

Posting positive thoughts – good vibes and sweet memories!

Papa’s World – for family – friends and a history of who and what we are!

Just a look at our life together.

A look back in time at a sweet memory!

All six grandkids are on the beach.

Memories to cherish –

A time in the past when they all were young!

Today – Maddy is 24 years old!

Just a picture of a time long past for a memorable memory!

A picture of the collapsed Kinzua Via Duct Bridge –

This bridge was built in the 1800s to ferry coal from the coal fields of Pa.

It also is where Sherry was raised a few miles away in Mount Jewett, Pa.

A tornado came through some years ago –

and took down half the bridge where it remains where it crashed to the ground!

Today – it is a Pa. State Park –

and has been converted into a walkway –

Where at the end is a viewing platform with a glass floor!

Here – you can stand on it and look over 300 feet straight down to the floor –

Of the Kinzua Valley where Native Americans once roamed!

Just a picture of Pa. – where Sherry is from!

Here is Maddy –

Taken two years ago at her senior year graduation from the University Of Lynchburg, Va.

She was the oldest in the beach picture of the grandkids!

Just a picture of how grandkids grow up!

A mother with her two daughters –

Debby – Sherry and Tammy!

Swedish genes run deep!

Just a picture of those I dearly love!

My blog each and every day represents to the future generations of us who came before them!

PAPA’S WORLD – LIFE IN PICTURES!

Papa’s World – Good vibes – some Humor!

Footprints in the sand –

Waves gently washing ashore – Soon they will disappear –

Erasing all proof that I strolled here!

The history of humans –

Over time disappears –

Occasionally – to reappear –

And cause us to wonder –

What has been all these tens of thousands of years ago!

I may be a history buff –

Excited to view new discoveries.

A Good Vibe for today is I feel we have existed –

For hundreds of thousands of years as humans.

Today – I celebrate that existence.

GOOD VIBES and HUMOR!

Laughter with long-time friends is PRICELESS!

Smile – laugh and feel good!

You are looking at FORTY PLUS YEARS of friendship!

Wine – beer – music and golf!

Friendships are a priority in our life together.

GOOD VIBES – SOME HUMOR!

There is a place about one and one half mile walk south –

from the Sunset Beach Pier!

It is a memorial to two Hippie Souls –

Who over FORTY YEARS AGO-

Hauled tools – a post and a mailbox to the middle of the seashore that is protected.

here they erected a mailbox and put a journal inside.

While over the years –

the mailbox has been replaced –

It still is a destination for souls who walk and write their thoughts in the new journals.

There now are two park benches to sit on –

Plaques to commemorate the two hippies.

A driftwood tree with a plaque sits high on the dune behind the benches and mailbox.

You gaze back across the marsh and water to Little River, S.C. –

And in the distance is Cherry Grove- just a short walk from NMB!

THE KINDRED SPIRIT MAILBOX IS HISTORIC AND THE JOURNALS ARE PRESERVED!

Over four decades’ worth of writing!

If you want a GOOD VIBE – consider the walk – in the surf –

and sit and write and gaze out to sea!

We have done it serval times and each time a wanting to come back exists.

MY GOOD VIBE FOR TODAY!

As the sun rises in the East on Ocean Isle Beach –

another day dawns.

We are blessed to be here to see this –

Our dream of living our dream is now here.

One day at a time and living life to the fullest while aging as healthy as we can.

Being a SENIOR – it happens but we choose to live it and smile- BE HAPPY!

Papa’s World – Years gone past!

Maddy – her first day on the bus for her first day of school!

Now – 23 years old and working as a Geologist-Scientist for a national environmental firm.

How this has changed in the years following!

The team I was part of for the protection of Sea Turtles – we sat this nest from 7pm. to 11pm.

each night until it hatched!

This was our first year – Sherry was on a previous nest.

My friend of many years – Buck and I at the COMEDY bus waiting for it to leave on our tour.

On a trip to Ashville, N.C.

Three oldest granddaughters – Ella – Maddy and Sarah during their vacation in Cameron Woods to see us.

My golfing buddies and friends for years and years – Buck and Jimmy!

The twins when they were young – playing hide and seek with me!

A memory from long ago!

Papa’s World – 1982 – the year we were married – YEARS GONE PAST!

Papa’s World – A look at life in pictures!

They say a picture expresses a thousand words!

The “WHY” we moved to OIB – close to the border of N.C. and S.C.

In the distance in the upper right-hand corner –

Sits a very tall building –

That my friends is the only tall building on these two barrier islands!

That is Ocean Isle Beach and this beach is seen from the pier –

It’s Sunset Beach!

We choose this area after nine months in North Myrtle Beach.

Which is 16 miles or a 30-minute drive South for us.

Going North on route 17 –

Is Wilmington, N.C.About a 40-minute drive.

These beaches are minutes from our home on the mainland side of the ICW!

While we are not on the beaches every day –

We can and do go when we want to.

Can it be cold here?

Yes – but most days are clear skies and bright sunshine.

Only once have I seen ice and it was gone by mid-morning.

I have not seen the snow accumulation – once saw flurries for a ten-minute time frame!

This Beach – we like to walk as it is flatter than OIB.

Making it easier to walk for me.

Both have piers and great entrances to the beach.

There soon will be paid parking I assume on both beaches –

But you can park at the piers for $10.00 all day!

I understand there might be parking passes for residents – one per household!

Living here – is a dream come true for both of us!

Can a picture say a thousand words?

I BELIEVE IT CAN!

Our oldest granddaughter – MADDY – on her graduation day from the University of Lynchburg!

She now has been out of college life for almost two years!

She has an environmental science degree and is employed by a countrywide Environmental firm.

She works in both the office and fieldwork.

When asked what she prefers –

Her answer is fieldwork!

She loves the outdoors –

often hiking mountain trails with her sister – ELLA-

A picture can say a thousand words!

I personally believe in a strong military presence both here and abroad.

The might of this country is in freedom –

That freedom is protected by our men and women in the service.

May all be blessed –

I stand with the military.

A picture tells a thousand words.

We have many people we consider friends.

I have also seen many who I don’t consider friends.

I unfollow many who have negative comments on my page.

Life is short enough without those comments –

I have no time for that –

I focus on positive thoughts – memories –

And write these blogs to enforce that in my pictures and words.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

My hope is that this brings a good vibe to your day!

Many thanks for reading my blogs!

Papa’s World – Living life in pictures of Memories!

For us – it all started on 6-25-1982 –

The day we were married.

Combining two sets of children –

Sherry’s two daughters –

and my two sons who stayed with their mother.

Weekends were full of living out in the country –

Campfires – sled riding down the 1/10 mile driveway.

Taking weekend trips camping –

blending the two families while working full-time jobs.

Sherry and her two daughters – Debby on the left – and Tammy on the right.

Both girls married and between them –

five granddaughters and one grandson.

Debby’s three girls are all adults now.

Maddy graduated from college nearly two years ago.

Ella graduates from college this year.

Sarah graduates from H.S. this year.

Tammy had twin girls –

they both are 14 years old.

The first boy is Bode – who is ten years old.

My two boys are with their partners and family.

Troy – with the beard – is the oldest.

His partner is Andrea –

He has no children and still lives back in NWPA.

The man can build a house from the ground up – everything!

Shawn with his wife Trisha and her daughter Autumn.

He has his own business –

He partners with Power companies and the state –

In energy efficiency for the Elderly –

Both auditing and insulation sides to his company.

He has two sons – Ryan and Dillion –

Both live in other parts of the country.

Here we are with Pam and Bob-

Bob and I went to grade school and high school together.

For the past six years, they have been retired and on the road in an RV.

Stopping each year for a weekly visit-

rehashing old times – playing golf –

Decades and decades of life shared from little kids to now seniors!

The grandkids along with Maddy’s boyfriend – Kendrick.

Moving South in 2020 –

We left behind all the grandkids in NVA.

But – they all have been to see us numerous times and we go back to NVA-

Life moves on and with it creates memories!

Ginger and Sherry –

Became fast friends back in NVA.

Today – her husband Jason and her –

live just outside Leland, N.C. –

close to our other longtime friends Cindy and Buck.

We golf with both couples.

They moved from NVA in the past year.

We will be making more memories together!

While TIME is like a RIVER of WATER –

Creating memories in pictures and this blog –

allows for family – friends and future generations –

to read and see what our life together has garnered.

The beginning goes all the way back to 6-25-1982-

Papa’s World – First visit to Captain Archies with friends!

We have seen this bar and grill every time we cross the Little River Bridge over the ICW into North Myrtle Beach – wondering what it was like – always seemed packed – we found out with friends!

MY LITTLE SMILE FOR THE DAY!

We had heard good things – music – drinks – happy hour and food!

There are boat slips here along with a marina – and all types of boat traffic on the ICW!

View of the slips and marina and the causeway bridge we travel over on our way to NMB!

Pam – Sherry – Papa and Bob – my grade-school – Jr. High and H.S. buddy from Eldred, Pa.

They were in a campground a couple miles from our home for almost two weeks –

we did a lot with them and this was our last night get-together.

This is only one half of Captain Archies – our food was very good and happy hour drink prices!

Pam and Sherry – we sat outside in the sun with views of the Marina and the bridge.

Palm trees – boats – great company – sorry to see them go – we played golf three times!

Bobby and Pam – we talked of maybe again in the Spring when they leave Florida!

Pam in oversized CAPTAIN ARCHIE CHAIR – fun times and lots of laughs!

PAPA’S WORLD – FIRST TIME VISITING CAPTAIN ARCHIES WITH FRIENDS – WE WILL GO BACK!

Papa’s World – Making life easier as a Senior!

It took me a long time to get here –

But there is some truth in this caption! LOL

Now – in my senior years –

I have a knack for looking at things and seeing if I can make them easier!

This past Christmas Season –

I decided to clear some shelf space in the garage!

Then – I started bringing all those crates down from the ATTIC over the garage!

Those drop-down stairs in the garage –

They are narrow and when you get 2/3’s of the way up – your space for your feet narrows considerably!

The opening is very narrow toward the top.

Plus – I am lying on my stomach handing those large crates down to Sherry-

on the second rung from the bottom.

The crate then slides down the ladder to the tips of her fingers to lower down to the floor!

This is our fourth Christmas here in our new home –

And now is becoming more difficult to use –

that attic space for storage for boxes and crates –

Of Christmas decorations!

This was an option when we built the new house.

There is a lot of space up there –

and now after the season –

I can store all or most of it on the shelves of the garage.

EXCEPT – we have three artificial trees –

Two small ones – one a Charlie Brown tree – no needles.

And our main tree – a large Charlie Brown tree with no needles.

These two Charlie Brown trees – the naked limbs fold up and have embedded lights!

They are easier to put away altogether –

as is the one outside on the porch which has fake green limbs.

By the time you read this blog –

We will have decided what to do with the trees!

The small ones-

I can still take up and down the ladder by myself.

The taller one must be handed down –

But that hard floor up there on my knees causes me pain!

This too shall be worked out by the both of us!

Just a small part of our daily life –

My next project is coloring all the grout in our shower –

The walls are 12 x 12 –

wide grout lines!

The floor is 2″ x 4″ tiles –

This small tile-in shower –

keeps you from slipping on the wet floor!

But each one has to be colored –

( at this time of writing – all is done)

Now I have some spray grout protectant –

that I shall put on and wipe excess off!

I hope this will be the last time I have to do this as working on my knees is getting harder!

The other day we went to NMB to run some errands in Big Lot stores –

we had not eaten breakfast and it was a little past 10 AM.

We decided to stop at Chick-fil-A – I had a muffin sandwich –

Sherry had an omelet type of breakfast.

She sat there and looked at me and said –

” I LOVE OUR LIFE HERE”!

Being a Senior has its challenges –

But at this point in our life together –

I agree –

“I LOVE OUR LIFE HERE”

and we will solve each problem –

one at a time and live –

OUR LIFE ONE DAY AT A TIME!

Papa’s World – Fun day at the beach – FAMILY!

On the final full day with Debby – Sarah and Ella – we went to Sunset Beach – the sun was warm –

the surf was somewhat cool – and the family time was great –

FUN DAY AT THE BEACH – FAMILY!

In the surf – left to right – Ella – Sarah – Sherry and Debby – the water was around 55 degrees – the sun was around 70 degrees and very little wind – making for a good day to “BEACH IT”!

They stayed an extra day to catch some “RAY”!

Ella throwing a small football – Sarah defending her mother Debby –

The pass and an almost catch by Debby bit Sarah knocked it away at the last moment!

Fun times – they got their feet wet and also some sun and a warm day.

Everyone – “HAVE A GREAT DAY”!

Papa’s World – Penny – my first dog.

She was brown and black – a mutt – but she was my mutt!

She was not a house dog – why I do not know – from my first memory of her –

she was on a chain in the back yard with her own dog house – full of hay and straw.

The chain was about twenty feet long so she had a wide area to run around in.

The dog house sat by the corner of the very old red barn next to the railroad tracks.

My father had at one time dug out the foundation to jack it up and put supports under it.

He had found a very old sword in the ground – still in its sheath and that was all pitted and rusted away.

We guessed it had fallen off a train and was maybe the Spanish American War or Civil War.

Penny was the only dog we had as I was growing up – funny – I do not remember her passing on.

But I do remember her always wagging her whole body when I came down to see her.

She was never loose as they said she would run and would not obey –

they were afraid she would get hit by a car on the main street in front of the house.

I never had another dog while living at home but my sister who lived next door did.

Pedro was my favorite – small – blonde – and he was a house dog.

I had dogs after that when I was on my own.

After I left and my dad passed away my mom got a very little dog named Sparky.

He was a house dog and very small.

But penny was the first dog I remembered – I liked her –

Papa’s World – Some past pictures and memories!

A milestone in our life together – reaching the senior year being 75 years old!

We also have been married for 43 years and together a year and a half before that!

Living life to the plus and living life one day at a time!

We also have moved South for the warmer climate and close to two beaches!

A dream we both have had since we first started dating!

We tend to enjoy every moment we can in our life together.

We keep busy – volunteering!

We are volunteers for the Protection of Sea Turtles on OIB!

We also volunteer at Coastal Living –

An assisted living home for seniors.

There are other things we do in volunteering –

This is our life now and has been since we were married.

While we do not do it daily – walking the beach – here is Sunset Beach Pier.

We like to walk here as it is flatter.

We also walk OIB –

both are minutes away from or home!

The town I grew up in – Eldred, Pa.

In the Alleghany mountains – six miles to the border of NYS!

This was Indian territory before the white man came –

It was the land of THE SENACA INDIAN ATION!

We both believe in this –

when we were married I converted from Catholic to Lutheran –

Sherry was raised as a Lutheran.

Our life together has always included church wherever we have lived!

In our married lives together we have celebrated many New Year’s Day together!

Looking forward to many more to come!

We cherish our armed forces and the rule and order of law.

The free speech and equality of men and women.

We live in what we feel is the greatest country on Earth.

GOD – FAMILY and COUNTRY!

Papa’s World – Writing Positive thoughts and blogs!

I do not watch “NEWS PROGRAMS”!

I find them to be slanted one way or the other.

I read – and I tend to see the articles before I read them if they are one way or another.

I sort my reading –

I am interested in opposite views so I can determine what I believe to be fact.

COMMON SENSE guides me more often than not!

Our life revolves around the above.

We volunteer – we help others when we can.

Our church is important to us.

Our family is equally important.

We gather friends of different points of view –

But we also do not discuss those views.

Friendships are best when Politics –

and religion are best kept to themselves.

This is very true –

Happiness is your awareness.

Surround yourself with people who tend to spread joy!

Being thankful for all that you have –

And spend time with family and friends!

Have a sense of humor –

Looking at oneself –

and enjoy the smile and funny thoughts!

We keep a positive outlook – We try to do as much together as we can.

Our life down here on the border of N.C. and S.C. –

is where we choose to be.

Our senior years are more comfortable here in the warmth that it provides us.

Papa’s World – Writing a Positive Blog!

Every morning – six to seven AM.

I sit at my keyboard and write a blog –

This is a way for me to express myself without going Political!

It is a way to JOG my memory for family – friends and neighborhood –

and where are our senior years we have decided this is the place we shall stay in!

When I started this blog –

my whole effort was going to revolve around a day-to-day account of how we live our lives.

It also would become a daily journal for our future great-grandchildren and beyond to read someday!

You see – I have very few words and pictures from my side of the family except what I have as a memory!

This writing is for my sons from a previous marriage as well as my two stepdaughters!

Almost all the family I grew up with is now gone.

I have one great-niece and two great-nieces left plus their children.

Sherry and I had no children together –

But we have been married for almost 43 years –

and together a year and one half before that wedding day 6-25-1982!

Our whole wedding vows were based on THE CHURCH ON THE ROCK!

Our wedding vows were “ROCK SOLID”!

Those little things in life –

We both do them well-

and in turn –

It mostly takes care of the bigger things in life!

It comes naturally for both of us!

EQUALITY – my belief and hers also.

We share duties –

EXCEPTION – I AM TO STAY AWAY FROM THE WASHER AND DRYER! LOL

Dinner – lunch and breakfast we share –

Clean up and cleaning in general we both do.

Making the bed – both of us.

I do not like to dust so she does while I dust mop the floors.

In retirement now in OIB –

The lawn we pay to have mowed-

We both trim bushes and plant flowers.

Both of us have a deep understanding of this –

And I have always championed EQUALITY –

MEN AND WOMEN – WOMEN AND MEN –

BOTH EQUAL IN OUR MINDS!

The statue of the great women of our country –

It is not complete but a vacant spot left for the FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT!

That day in OUR MINDS will eventually come to be true!

I hope this POSITIVE BLOG brings good thoughts to you-

My intent is to provide humor – good thoughts –

To give future generations an idea of just who we are!

PAPA’S WORLD – WRITING A POSITIVE BLOG!

Papa’s World – Living life one day at a time!

We have what I consider many friends!

Some are closer than others –

but all are welcome to our home!

So – we choose to spend our time with those friends –

while also making new friends!

FAMILY is important to us also!

We built our last three homes with that in mind!

We have bedrooms and baths to accommodate those Families and friends!

And – in the over three years we have been in this home –

it has been filled up many times with those family and friends!

To us – that is LIVING ONE DAY AT A TIME –

with Family and Friends!

Our family – friends

-friendly home in OIB!

We choose this model for a couple reasons.

It had three bedrooms ( but only two baths)

It has an enclosed office-

where we can put a blow-up mattress!

We have what is called a Sunroom –

with a pull-out Queen-sized bed!

We have another pull-out single couch mattress –

in our bedroom!

With all of those,

we can sleep ELEVEN –

and could use the couch for one more!

We also have an enclosed three-season room-

where a single blowup mattress could serve as a bed!

And important to me was the covered front porch-

that had shade most of the day!

The only downside –

was we could only get the two bathrooms with this model!

Thus our planning for building our home is LIVING LIFE ONE DAY AT A TIME!

Sherry and I volunteer our time and services.

The Protection for Sea Turtles –

From mid-May to October –

We are at the beach –

either walking to report TURTLE CRAWLS and Nests –

To sit on the beach from 7pm. to 11pm.-

for those nests to hatch –

and making sure the little Sea Turtles make it to the ocean!

We also volunteer for Coastal Living –

A facility that has assisted living for the elderly!

Sherry helps with the monthly store for residents –

where they use their earned credits –

to purchase all types of items donated and clothing!

This gives them the feeling of shopping –

even though they are with walkers and wheelchairs.

I go in once a month –

and organize the Library –

making it easier to select books-

by saying mystery – western – romance, etc.

I also arrange the puzzles –

according to how many pieces there are –

most like the 300 as they are bigger pieces!

After Hurricane Helena hit WNC in the mountains –

We started donations –

and bought supplies

to be taken by locals by truck into the WNC mountains –

And then we hooked up with friends-

from Hickory, N.C. –

Who would purchase supplies –

Take them to the airport –

where small helicopters flew them into areas that could not be reached.

They also found ways to drive themselves-

into areas that needed assistance!

Together – we would send them donations to purchase supplies –

And we raised almost $4000.00!

This I call LIVING ONE DAY AT A TIME!

View to the East from our front driveway!

I want to thank each and every one of you –

for following my BLOGS!

Papa’s World – Everything good – thoughts and smiles!

LOL – HUMOR to start your day!

Sunrise – white fluffy clouds or bright clear blue skies!

And yes – those grey skies and rain drizzle –

Stay in and snuggle up with a blanket –

Or sit on a chair or glider on your covered front porch ( like I do )-

and listen to the rain!

Gather your thoughts –

listen to your heart –

say hello and have a smile!

Your friends are what keep you thinking “HOW LUCKY AM I!”

Our nation – free –

where we work – live and die.

The USA – God Bless!

Sherry and granddaughter –

Spend quality time with the next generation!

They will remember and see in their minds who – what you were!

Life is full of “LITTLE THINGS”-

for it is those “LITTLE THINGS” that you do every day –

will take care of the “LARGER THINGS” in your life!

It is useless and only brings sadness or uncomfortable vibes!

In my case so as not to see their thoughts on “THINGS” –

I simply “UNFOLLOW” them!

My day is not spent on seeing the negative thoughts but living for the positive!

My hope is that this blog brings a sense of positive and humorous thoughts your way.

To a leg injury between her Sophomore year and her senior season.

This caused many pain-filled days and nights-

but she just soldiered on and continued playing!

Today she can take that positive attitude and think back –

She did and will be a good teacher to young students as she continues her teaching career!

A POSITIVE LOOK INTO POSITIVE THOUGHTS IN THIS BLOG!

Last summer – Hurricane Helena blasted Western North Carolina!

We started taking cash donations over our Facebook posts and word of mouth.

We reached out to friends – family, and neighbors and got a rewarding response.

We collected almost $4000.00 and that started our road to support organizations that collected supplies!

Along the way – some H.S. friends of Sherry contacted us as they saw what we were doing.

They lived in Hickory, N.C. –

about five miles to the airport that serviced the small helicopters that would fly in supplies!

This allowed us to pay for supplies they bought and either took to the airport or drove into the mountains-

to distribute them to needy families and communities!

This was a win-win for us and those people in need.

A POSITIVE ACTION TO HELP AND MANY THANKS TO THOSE WHO DONATED AND HELPED!

A little HUMOR!

Sharing time with my youngest son Shawn –

who is a ranked pool player in both Canada and the USA.

A POSITIVE TIME FOR US IN VISITS FROM MY FAMILY WHO LIVE SO FAR AWAY!

Our friend Jo and Sherry –

Years ago we were in D.C.

This statue is left undone –

to be completed when the first woman is elected president!

The three that are finished are important women in history for equal rights for women.

Papa’s World – Looking back – some memories.

Living in NVA for 20 years – we became Washington Commanders fans!

We lived five miles from their headquarters and practice fields!

Many times in the season –

I would take a half-day vacation and go to those fields!

I could see players and coaches up close.

These are memories I shall always cherish from the past!

Six years ago – the day Maddy signed her letter of intent – to play soccer at –

The University of Lynchburg!

In her career, she made the all-conference third teams –

All-conference second teams.

And in her final senior year captain.

They won their way into the NCAA nationwide tournament two out of the four years.

Memories that will last the rest of my life!

The day we took Bode and Taylor by Metro into D.C. –

And visited the museum and THE PEOPLE’S HOUSE!

A replicate of the nation’s WHITE HOUSE!

Here is Taylor sitting at the President’s desk –

And Bode and MORMOR at the chairs for visitors!

I am sure that as well as I –

they will have this as a lifetime memory!

The little girl who since she was three years old-

loves Horses!

Today – she spends all her spare time at the barn!

Taylor rubbed the horse down before going out to the corral.

She would do this every day if allowed.

Taylor – creating lifetime memories!

Before we moved South – we golfed locally –

It was not unusual to have deer on the course with us!

A lifetime memory!

Today we are living in our sixth home together –

The last three we have had built!

We are in the warmth of the South making dreams come possible.

A lifetime of memories with our last home –

Here we shall be –

making more memories!

Volunteering for Sea Turtle Protection on OIB.

A memory we shall have as we grow older!

We have traveled the country.

We both believe in equality –

Loving – caring-

and helping those less fortunate.

Friends for years and years-

we get together every four months or so.

All are now retired.

Friends forever!

A LIFETIME MEMORY!

We were married June 25th- 1982 –

Back then I played softball –

but to participate together –

We both started playing Volleyball – CO-ED!

This was a tough league of 16 teams.

Not your backyard volleyball –

but protect yourself from getting smashed in the face.

We finally won after five years of playing-

but never quite getting there!

Top left side – Papa and Sherry.

A MEMORY OF A LIFETIME!

We called ourselves THE BEACH CLUB – our dream finally came true in 2021!

Papa’s World- Pleasant thoughts and humor!

For over 14 years – we got to watch Ella play soccer –

Travel – H.S. and then college.

She produced so much joy for us in watching her grow into a young woman.

Today – that is my GOOD THOUGHT!

Yes – I voted for President Reagan –

This comment from him is why,

in my mind,

he reflected a feeling I had and I voted for him.

Another good thought for the day!

We try as much as we can-

to help other people-

volunteering is our way of life.

A good thought for the day!

PAPA’S WORLD – GOOD THOUGHTS – HUMOR and SMILES!

Papa’s World – Senior living – live your dream!

In our senior years – we dreamed of living near a beach – I used to say “I wanted to retire and sell hot dogs on the beach”!!!!

Well – I no longer wish to do that – “I RETIRED AND NOW I WANT TO BUY A HOT DOG ON THE BEACH”!!!

When retirement came – we were living in NVA and that was to be our retirement home –

We could either drive or take the Metro into D.C. – which we often did as guides for our visitors.

But – The 401k went way down – however, the house’s value went way up!

Time to cash out – and head South to warmer weather – and the beach!

I’m going to be able to buy that HOTDOG on the BEACH!

And another dream – to play golf – we live near 30 golf courses – all within one-half hour!

We love to golf – we had played competitive Volley Ball in our 30’s to early 40’s –

and decided to take up golf!

Playing in NVA was expensive – here we purchased the FIRST TEE CARD!

It gives us a substantial discount on 52 courses!

So golf has become a way of our dream senior living!

Warm weather – beautiful fall days – skies to die for – living in the South – no more ice and snow.

Moving South – all the family has visited numerous times.

Walking in the sunshine on the beach – senior living and senior dreams.

Papa’s World – Thoughts – humor and vibes.

It feels oh so good when your drive ends up in the fairway –

past the 150-yard marker to the green!

This does not happen all that often for me –

but when it does – I take a picture for a good memory!

This happens to me –

and when it does –

I bite my tongue and count to ten-

it just is not worth the mental thoughts-

Peace – love and good thoughts help the reactions!

This is Sarah when she was little –

our small fashion diva!

Her smile – her way of offering to help – she now is a beautiful young lady –

about to graduate.

But – I shall always remember little Sarah-

a special place in my heart!

When they were small –

Taylor and Cassidy –

today they are 14 years old –

Taylor is almost as tall as me and Cassidy catching up!

But there was a time they would come and crawl up into my lap!

Those times and memories are PRICELESS!

Hope – love and peace-

caring – hugging and helping-

Brings peace of mind to us all!

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS – AND OURS IS HERE!

Papa’s World – Some thoughts and good vibes!

May this new year bring you good vibes –

loving – caring – happiness.

If you are ever visiting NWPA –

You may want to see “THE KINZUA AQUIDUCT”!

Located just outside Mount Jewett, Pa.

Built-in the 1800s as a way to ship Coal from this Pa. site over the KINZUA VALLEY-

Where Native Americans roamed-

thousands of years ago-

It has become a State Park –

A Tornado came through-

and took half of it down.

Today you can walk out on it –

and peer straight down 300 feet-

To the floor of the valley through a glass floor!

Warning –

not for the squeamish –

like me – who do not like heights!

But it is worth the time to visit the museum-

and see the history behind all this!

MY GOOD THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!!!!

One day many years ago –

Our twin granddaughters –

came to help bag up leaves!

IF I COULD ONLY TURN BACK TIME!

My good thought for the day!

The same twin granddaughters –

Now if I could make time stand still!

MY GOOD THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

Sharing good times – golfing –

all those years –

and still getting together!

My hope is that today –

I have given you some GOOD THOUGHTS –

as we are about to tee it off at MEADOWLANDS GOLF COURSE!

The Goodmans came for a visit –

staying at Sea Trails –

a couple miles from us.

Bob and I went golfing there a-

and the girls did some shopping!

This day was for all four of us –

to play a best ball scramble –

and what a beautiful day it was!

Throughout the 18 holes –

you could putt off the fairways!

It was in great shape!

A mild 74 degrees –

the heat wave had passed –

and mild weather was in place!

Pam – Sherry and Bob –

checking out the ball we choose to play!

I got lucky and hit a good drive –

putting us just past-

the 150-yard marker to the green!

We all hit some good shots –

and some not-so-good!

Watching the threesome in front of us –

We had to wait a lot –

as the course was packed.

But – it was a sunny day with a slight breeze –

and we did not mind!

Golfing with lifelong friends –

It doesn’t get much better than that!

Papa’s World – HELENA DONATIONS!

As the DONATIONS came in – the PURCHASES went out!

As this writing –

DONATIONS: $3600.00

PURCHASES: $3139.22

BALANCE: $460.40

To think we were able to reach out on Social Media and this was the response!

The response came from 10 states and one from a person from Japan!

31 families responded!

Dozens of trips made to the Hickory, N.C. airport –

By Sherry’s school in Smethport, Pa. friends.

They – Linda and Pat – now live in Hickory, N.C.

The airport is near them and was the staging ground for the Helicopters –

that were coordinated to fly into hard-to-reach areas!

They would purchase supplies –

send us a photo of the receipt –

and we would mail a check to them to cover the expense.

This became a direct lifeline to the areas –

Our own areas had dwindled –

This will allow us to continue as long as the donations come in!

Our thanks go out to these two-

Who have helped to deliver supplies-

Papa’s World – Part one – The gardens of James Wood estate – Winchester, Va.

The James Wood estate – founder of Winchester, Va.

The mid-1700s found James Wood laying out the boundaries of Winchester, Va.

Sub-divided into lots with streets – and this estate for himself.

Three springs lay on this property and the land had many natural rock formations and loose rocks.

The rocks were used for boundary lines like fences and the others for foundation work.

One of the many springs in the area – this one for the Old Town.
Natural rock formations with fresh spring water.
The beauty of the estate is how they used the natural landscape for the design of the gardens.
A look over the natural spring waters of the James Wood estate.
Sherry on one section of natural rock.

Note the stone wall behind her – most likely picked up off the ground and used in the construction.

The James Wood estate is now part of The Museum Of The Shenandoah Valley
Thanks for reading – part two will be the – estate – lawns and gardens.

Papa’s World – HUMOR – laughs and smiles!

Smiling in Today’s World –

Laughing –

a way to combat negative airwaves!

I am sharing this today-

to bring some positive vibes to your day!

Well – I will be D—ed!

How true is this!

But it is a form of humor and a way to relax in today’s world!

Go hit the links –

but stay away from this BAD BOY –

Riding the cart fast and away!

Saw this on a recent golf outing!

Yes –

this happens all the time –

I obey the signs-

and someone who feels entitled-

just ignores them –

and crowds in –

Well – that person does not get in front of me if I can help it!

NOT FUNNY-

but at least it stops the frustration of this happening!

OKAY – the best for last –

And I think it says a lot –

and is funny!

I hope this brings some humor to your day –

Some smiles and chuckles.

Papa’s World – Hurricane Helena-Donations.

We found a place to donate clothes –

Our neighbor would take them to a local church –

and then they would see that they got to the victims.

Our friends in HICKORY, N.C. continue to purchase and deliver to the airport supplies.

These will be flown by volunteers in Helicopters to areas hard to reach.

Roads into and out of areas were destroyed!

Day after day we continued to get donations and then make purchases!

We continued to reach out on Social Media for places to take donations!

A lot of places had exhausted their trucks and manpower.

The semi was loaded twice –

Other trailers and trucks more than six times!

Now we waited –

a second Hurricane was approaching Florida – A FIVE!

We shall see and continue –

We have faith in what we are doing!

They work tirelessly –

Separating and bagging donations.

This is but a glimpse into helping folks in distress from a distance.

Papa’s World – Helenna – continued!

The overcast gray skies did not put a damper on the crowds of people –

who came bearing donations for the Hurrican Helenna victims –

in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

We are in Sunset Beach across from the parking lot and pier.

Pier owners have organized this effort –

as they are native to areas of damage and destruction!

A semi-tractor trailer was empty –

when we dropped off our donations.

There were other trailers there –

two of them were filled and left shortly-

the day before four vehicles –

loaded had departed and made deliveries!

Volunteers unloaded and stacked pallets for loading.

Dozens of people helped.

Our friends Jim and Claudia donated 20 black plastic crates –

making it easier and much welcomed to pack the semi-full of pallets!

Two trailers on the left are packed and ready to go-

the semi on the right was empty –

when we arrived!

They had just started to load this –

when we arrived with our totes!

Our totes –

filled and labeled on top with contents inside.

On the other side of the semi –

a tailor waits – almost filled!

Gray skies – a trailer waits to move into the loading area!

We unloaded and left –

within hours the semi was full!

Sherry and I want to express our admiration –

thanks and people’s willingness to help!

They trusted us to donate money –

time and items –

An extra shout-out to Jim and Claudia –

who drove to Sam’s Club-

to purchase four cases of small propane canisters.

And to Pat and Linda –

who Sherry knew from back in Mount Jewett –

who now lives in Hickory, N.C.

They agreed to purchase items –

which we reimbursed for –

and take them five miles to the airport where the Helicopters –

making coordinated delivers into unreachable areas-

This getting supplies to those in need!

All the trailers and semi-truck were filled-

plus what was filled the previous day-

left within hours of us unloading.

As of this writing –

DONATIONS – MONEY: $2580.00

ITEMS PURCHASED: $1797.65

The Sunset Beach Pier has stopped for now –

waiting for the supplies to be used up in the field.

When they commence again in a few days-

We will begin once again purchasing supplies:

Money left to purchase: $782.35

We stand in a huge line to check out at Wal-Mart in Shallotte, N.C.

Every checkout line was like this –

and even longer at the self-checkout!

We speculated it might just be the Long Shoremens strike had just begun!

And also many like us –

were buying supplies for the N.C. Mountains-

who had lost everything they owned.

In this picture,-

you see a women in a black dress –

We had never seen her before –

and she asked what we were doing!

She and her husband –

and twelve other relatives –

were staying on Holden Beach at their second home.

They all had lost power back in the mountains –

and trees were down all over their property.

They had left and gone to the second house on the coast.

They did not know when they would get back to their houses!

We had purchased mainly supplies such as blankets – pillows – camping cooking pots and pans.

Propane – small canisters to cook with!

Depends – the items that were needed –

according to the info we were getting from the people who delivered the trucks and trailers.

This couple after they checked out –

asked if they could donate there and then –

We did not know them-

and they did not know us –

She handed Sherry two $20.00 bills and walked away!

They were in distress-

not knowing about their own homes –

but gave it anyway.

We told them we would give it to the trucks to cover gas –

The owner of the pier-

who is organizing all of this –

said “NO” –

he reached into his pocket and took out a wad of donations!

He had dispatched several people to go –

and buy big-ticket items –

Chainsaws – generators – cooking stoves, etc.

We then went to Dollar General –

to see if we could stretch our donations out!

This is where we paid the same for propane canisters-

but bought a lot of baby supplies.

The babies need so much!

Back to our garage –

where we repacked the items we bought-

and the tops marked with what was in them-

for delivery to Sunset Beach pier.

The people we describe above –

are just a few that we have met –

Many people coming together –

giving time- effort –

money and willing to help.

The donations kept coming in –

we are humble!

People are good –

people give and do not question –

People trust –

and people help those in need-

As of this writing –

four days in on donating –

FEMA has shipped 8.5 MILLION MEALS –

7 MILLION LITERS of water –

150 GENERATORS to affected areas –

and countless helicopters to deliver to stranded towns.

I will continue to blog –

and I want to thank you for reading –

Papa’s World – Collecting food for WNC – flood victims.

Sherry and I started collecting money through posts –

we had to buy items and take them to a

spot on the Sunset Pier in trucks and trailers –

This was in response to a post made by the owners of the Pier –

Who happened to be from the area in WNC MOUNTAINS –

And wanted to help the region –

Collecting water – food – health items clothes and blankets!

We spent over 100.00 dollars of our own money –

But – then after our posts –

other donations started coming in.

Close to $1000.00 and still coming!

Folks who donated staying –

and separating items to be packed onto the trailer and UHAUL!

Sherry is in the top middle!

Our neighbors Patrisha Donna and Pete are friends.

We ran into other friends and neighbors who also donated.

Soon – neighbors were dropping off boxes and bags for us to take over.

These were the first of FOUR TRUCKS and TRAILERS –

They collected for less than Two Days –

and filled them up!

On Wednesday of that week –

arrangements were made by the owners of the pier –

To park a friend’s Semi-tractor trailer-

to park across the street –

and the donations to continue!

Slowly the people came –

and then more and more –

Two more trucks were added –

in less than 48 hours – all four were filled.

A second site was announced –

this one at OIB – a parking lot near the park and museum.

This trailer had a weight limit of 1600 lbs.

The water was transferred to the UHAUL –

The owner of this trailer was a man named Danny –

A retired police officer who lives in Calabash and rides a motorcycle!

Papa and Sherry – we made four trips to the stores –

With the money donated –

we were able to go to the Food Lion twice –

the Dollar Tree once –

Plus neighbors dropping off supplies to our home.

We went to the home of a couple-

who had just purchased it in July –

They had spent this weekend of the storm there-

They were going back to the mountains-

and needed water –

and food to help their neighbors.

We dropped off three cases of water and a large box of food.

On this day –

after we made our fourth delivery –

We went back home with $25.00 left.

I posted the results –

and vowed to continue if donations came in.

That night we went to bed with $375.oo in the account!

The next day –

we will continue –

and go forward –

As long as the donations continue –

we will deliver –

and continue donating ourselves.

Papa’s World – family – our boys!

Troy Papa Shawn

It was a very long time in coming – we moved South in 1999 and left behind the boys.

They had their own lives and jobs –

We have been planning this for months and months –

and after driving some 15 hours –

they were here.

Before they came down – they agreed among themselves – they would play golf with me if I played mini golf with them – DONE – next time it is GOLF! LOL
Sherry Troy Papa

We had so much fun showing the SALT LIFE – sunrises and sunsets.

Shawn and Sherry

Memories of the past 40-plus years were talked about and laughed at!

This time together means so much!

FAMILY – our boys came to visit!

Papa’s World – My sons – Troy and Shawn!

From my first marriage – my sons – Troy and Shawn.

They still live in the area they were born in – NWPA near the border of WNY –

Some 70 miles South of Buffalo.

Troy – the oldest – can build a house from the ground up – everything needed to open the door!

Turn on the lights –

He gets all this from my father – who could do the same thing!

My dad could lift out an engine in a car and replace it!

Andrea – Troy and Sherry on the pier!

He is going to try to make it down next summer!

Trisha and Shawn – my youngest son – who owns his own Insulation and Auditing business.

His contracts with power companies and state resources keep him busy 24/7 –

all year long!

He also is a ranked pool player in the USA and Canada!

They made it down last summer and hope to return next summer!

Very proud of both boys and hope they make it back next summer.

TROY – PAPA – SHAWN – my sons!

Papa’s World – Trisha – Shawn – Conway – Halloween.

My son and his wife –

visited us at the end of September –

and we went to Conway, S.C.

Known as the HALLOWEEN CITY OF THE USA!

Orange pumpkins hang it seems from every tree on the streets!

The trunks and branches-

are wrapped with white Christmas lights –

going high and branching out throughout the long Oak branches!

Spooky tall Oak trees –

with long arm-like branches are everywhere!

It must take a long time to decorate the entire town this way!

The slow drizzle of rain-

enhanced the theme of Halloween!

Shawn high-fives a skeleton –

sitting on a bench on the main street!

Trisha and Sherry at the table –

where we had a late lunch –

The day was filled with raindrops but warm –

as we wandered the streets –

and met the Halloween Giants!

Papa and Sherry standing by one of the tall dressed skeletons!

It was every alleyway you ventured into –

you were greeted with very tall automated figures!

All the storefront windows were displayed.

Papa’s World – Around the house – SKIES!

As the sun rises in the east –

it casts a golden glow on the front porch sidewalk!

We live facing North –

and the back of the house –

faces South toward the beach.

Because of the curvature of the coastline from Charleston S.C.-

to Wilmington, N.C. –

a quarter moon shape –

our beaches face almost South instead of East!

Standing in our driveway facing North –

to the right is East and to the left is West.

We came here to check this lot out –

when it was just dirt and sand –

and we know how the Sun rises and sets –

We wanted it this way –

as the front porch is almost in the shade all day!

This is where I wanted to sit and just watch the world go by! LOL

Looking West as the Sun rises in the East behind me.

It is quiet here –

lots of people walking and riding bikes.

Clear skies and lots of birds –

and some Eagles!

Our wildlife is extreme –

Coyote – fox – squirrels –

some rabbits – raccoon – possum – turkey –

Deer and bear and a Red Wolf!

Alligators in the ponds

and snakes!

The snakes I watch out for –

you never know!

The rest usually you see from a distance.

The Sun rises in the East –

over the small palm tree –

Early morning-

and the neighborhood is quiet.

Living in OIB and our community –

Near the border of S.C. –

We have left the snow and ice behind – so far!

Papa’s World – We ended the Summer by golfing with friends!

At the clubhouse where Jim and Dottie Brown live-

just a stone’s throw from.

Our group of eight friends have gotten together over the years to party –

Play golf (GALS vs. GUYS SCRAMBLES)

Dinner and just good times-

and conversations!

This time it was in Edenton, N.C. –

where our lifetime friends Jim and Dottie –

built a new house just a short time ago!

We vary the place of meetups-

by hosting the long weekends –

The next one will be at our home in OIB!

This course sits right on the water-bay –

and this is the clubhouse.

They live just a stone’s throw from here –

on the Par Three number two hole-

right across the road from their front lawn!

The gals shipping up to the green –

NOTE: They won the first 18 by two strokes-

and we won the second 18 shooting a 69!

The first course was at OCCANO –

about a half hour away.

That course – I would go back to that in a heartbeat.

I also liked this course,

and it is just down the street.

We always have such a fun time with a lot of “TALK” going on!

But – I will put it this way –

they are tough –

and between the four of them – if we win –

it is usually by a few strokes!

Jimmy is about to hit his shot into the green –

and the gals in the background!

And at either course –

we almost had it to ourselves!

The “GUYS” – PAPA –

in the cart – JIMMY and BUCK – standing – CRAIG!

We managed three under par in this course!

The “GALS” – SHERRY – DEBBIE – CINDY and DOTTIE!

They beat us by two strokes in the first course.

Papa’s World – A big shout out – HAPPY BIRTHDAY TROY!

Today I say to my oldest son – HAPPY BIRTHDAY my son –

I remember holding your hand –

walking up the main street of Eldred –

to your grandma and grandpa’s house.

The little blond-haired boy –

who loved both of them.

So many memories of those early years –

I wished for one day-

we could have them back

Today – we celebrate the little boy –

who has turned into a man –

Who can and does build anything –

ground up-

and finishing it off!

You did not get that from me-

but from my father – your grandfather –

Who could and did the same as you.

That house we would walk up to –

He built that!

The motorcycle you have and used to ride –

Well – you got that from me –

as I rode in the 70’s!

The beard is yours –

I couldn’t grow one! LOL

Today – is all yours –

another one in the books.

I am so proud of the man you have become –

Kind – Caring and loving –

the biggest heart –

Celebrate my son –

Although we are not together to help you celebrate –

know that my thoughts are with you.

Papa’s World – Working in my early years.

The day we were married on 6-25-1982 –

this is after both of us were married and divorced.

We met at AOTC –

I was working in shipping and she was working in payroll.

I had to walk by her desk-

to the traffic manager’s office to get paperwork.

By that time I had already worked here for 13 years –

starting June 5, 1967.

And she started a few years before we were married.

For as long as I can remember –

I always wanted to be near the sand – surf of the beach.

The first place we went on vacation together was to the Outer Banks.

But before I met her –

I worked in Body Prep for American Olean Tile Co.

First 6 1/2 years was on the second shift-

before I bid on a day shift job in the same department.

The new crew I worked with were –

Nick – Zeke – Clarence – Lynn – Walt -Bobby – and Big John.

This crew had worked in that department for years –

before I came to work there.

The Tile Plant was what I called a generation plant.

Grandfathers – fathers and sons –

all worked there.

When they finally closed the doors in 2012 –

It had been operating for 99 1/2 years!

I worked there for 32 years before we transferred out in 1999.

Sherry by that time was Logistics –

and I was a supervisor.

I had worked all over the plant –

and ended up running the two departments I started in.

Those early years were full of memories for me.

I worked with people who at the time I started –

had over forty years in!

I remember the original owner walking through the plant.

I knew every nook and cranny –

as when I transferred –

I was responsible for all the outside grounds –

Acres and acres needed to be maintained.

I would inspect the roof –

and report anything I saw to the head of maintenance.

By that time –

I headed the replacing of people on vacations for the entire plant –

those positions I had to have people who could replace them –

if they – the department –

couldn’t fill in the spots – and I had to do it with no overtime.

All this while filling in myself for other supervisors’ vacations or time off.

I needed a change –

I was stressed out – time to leave.

So when Sherry said she also wanted to leave –

we began searching for openings in the company.

Two jobs came up in NVA –

and we applied for them=

and we got them.

Transferring within the company meant that we carried our service years with us.

By the time we retired,

we had accumulated 79 1/2 years between us.

Those early years have brought us here to 2025 –

and living our life near the beach.

My and her dream has come true.

But – I fondly remember the early years –

the struggles and raising two sets of children.

Today I look back-

at that crew, I worked with all those years ago –

as far as I know –

sadly all but two are gone.

But – I cherish those days =

as they were with me growing up from 1967 –

a time of turmoil in the world –

to find security within those walls and earn a living.

Thanks for reading and HGD!

SHERRY and PAPA – celebrating our lives together.

Papa’s World – A year in review!

Tayor and Cassidy – first day of school – I believe first grade!

And in 2024 –

their first day of school is the 8th. grade – 14 years old!

Notice how Cassidy is slowly catching up to Taylor who is 5’8″!!!!

They are growing up way too fast.

A YEAR IN REVIEW!

This was our second full year volunteering for Sea Turtle Protection –

N.C. WILDLIFE RESOURCES COMMISSION – PERMIT – ST2402!

It was a mixed bag for us in 2024-

First I had two implants for my front teeth –

and then Sherry had one.

Then we think during golfing – she strained her L1 vertebrae resulting in a fracture.

This was followed by a blockage in the small intestine –

Then we both caught COVID!

This all limited us in our beach walking and nest sitting for 2024!

But we still did duties

and look forward to next this new year.

A YEAR IN REVIEW!

Finally –

after all the Pandemic years –

We were able to get the family all together-

for a beach vacation!

And we were able to celebrate both of ur 75th. birthdays!

Family Beach Vacation – 2024!

What a wonderful time –

renting two golf carts –

the grandkids loved that!

The older three drove them –

Hoping this year they all can make it down from NWPA!

A YEAR IN REVIEW!

Once again my grade school buddy-

and his wife paid us a visit.

This has become an annual visit for the last five or six years.

Bob and Pam –

who now tour the country as RVING –

Spending time on both coasts –

and in the South.

Life on the road – camping –

and warm weather either-

in Phoenix or The Villages in Florida –

Or summers in Maine and New Hampshire!

A YEAR IN REVIEW!

We have now enjoyed our new home for three-plus years.

As the sun rises on year number four –

We are happily living our dream –

of beach life and golf.

Shopping and exploring the area.

A YEAR IN REVIEW!

Our life still consists of old friends-

who have been a part of it for years!

from back in NWPA and WNY.

Now we all live in the state of N.C.

Still friends for all these years!

PAPA’S WORLD – A YEAR IN REVIEW – celebrating another year and New Year’s Eve!

Papa’s World – A new year to come!

A view of the marsh in Vareen Gardens – Little River, S.C.

Walking the trails –

the wooden boardwalks –

across the marshes-

and through the pine and cedar trees-

We have been doing this little trip since we first found it in 2020!

It is quiet –

peaceful-

and wanders through forests and marsh to the ICW!

Once there –

you find shells decorated or signed or just plain hanging by string-

from the multiple tees in the area.

Sherry coming along the path-

from the wooden boardwalk –

onto another boardwalk –

that comes out on the ICW!

On a large deck,

fishermen try for fish as boats pass by.

The day is warm –

with a breeze –

We slowly walk the boardwalk –

the tide is almost high-

and the marsh is flooded.

Vareen Gardens goes way back –

as a family compound in the 1600s.

There is a family cometary here –

This land was turned into a park –

And is free to the public.

This time is a look forward –

to our fifth year being in the N.C. & S.C. area.

Our senior years are here now.

The new year to come –

Welcoming family and friends-

to our home.

From us on the ICW at Vareen Gardens –

Love – happiness and a life full of joy in the New Year.

Papa’s World – My father – gone but not forgotten.

Imagine my surprise when one day-

I happened upon a post on FaceBook –

Asking those of us from my hometown –

If they recognize anyone in the pictures they posted?

Must be they were cleaning out a home –

And came across an album that had many pictures –

But no names associated with them.

Just on a whim —

I clicked on the first one and then another.

They seemed to be back in the 50s –

and I just did not know who they were.

And then the second to last –

a picture of five men holding bowling balls!

I KNEW EVERY ONE OF THEM GROWING UP AND ONE WAS MY FATHER!

Now – I have very few family pictures –

my sister had them all –

And when she passed away –

they all went to my niece.

Boxes of them!

Then – she became ill – brain cancer –

and she hung on but then –

young – she passed away.

Those boxes remained in her home and a person –

who was not part of the family –

To throw them all away-

without asking anyone as far as I know –

If they wanted them!

That was gut-wrenching for me-

as all my family history was in those boxes.

So this picture came as a complete surprise to me!

The first man on the left – Bobby Bradt –

the second man from the left –

my father – Bob Fitzsimmons –

his real name was Clarence Robert Fitzsimmons –

everyone called him Bob or”FITZ”!

Then Don -(who owned the insurance business)

who every year I got a birthday card from him –

as I was born on his birthday!

Then Eddie –

who was the meat cutter in the Market Basket.

And finally – my father’s best friend – ELMER –

who passed away a few years after this picture was taken.

He owned the local dealership of Dodge cars.

My dad was about six feet tall –

and his father made him stay in school –

although he graduated as a Sophomore!

There was no place for him to go-

as that was shortly after the depression.

They were what I was brought up to say “DOWNHOMERS”!

Down in Pa. by Brookville and Corsica.

Grandpa was a teacher –

and taught way into his late 70s and early 80s.

Dad’s mother was a Kennedy –

and he was raised as an Irish Protestant.

She was as I remember very tall –

almost six foot and thin.

I remember going to their home in the coal country down there.

They had an outhouse and a pump in the kitchen sink for water.

One of Dad’s brothers lived next door

and his sister not far away on a huge chicken farm.

My mother also came from that area –

one of eleven boys and girls –

She was next to the youngest.

Her parents –

her mother was Pa. Dutch

and her father was Irish Catholic.

He passed away before I was born-

but my middle name (DAVID) was in his honor.

In this picture here –

my dad was a good left-handed bowler.

And I think they went to Buffalo and won something up there!

He was a supervisor for the South Penn Oil Company –

and when growing up during the summer –

would take me to work with him.

Those were days I will always remember –

riding the bulldozer with “PAT”-

who worked for my day – pulling the tool house behind us.

Dad also golfed with Elmer –

they had a name that they called themselves –

the foursome which included Eddie.

I forget what it was-

but I know after Dad and Elmer passed -it continued.

Dad passed away in 1969 –

a few years after his best friend Elmer.

Their families for years would go way North into Canada –

flying in and landing on water at fishing camps.

There were hundreds of pictures of them in the boxes thrown away.

On the old red barn in the backyard –

they had nailed dozens of muskie and pike heads to the front of the barn.

I knew every one of these men growing up –

My hope is someday in the future –

future generations of the family read my blogs –

Look at the pictures of our life together –

and form memories-

and maybe – just maybe –

ONE OF THEM CARRIES ON THE BLOG POSTS INTO THE FUTURE!

PAPA’S WORLD – MY FATHER – GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.

Papa’s World – A look around – see what I see!

I love colors –

chimes and flowers!

The wind provides a calming effect when this chime –

which we purchased at a vendor fair near our residence-

It is a glass bottle –

decorated with a wooden round wheel –

as it swings from the wind – a musical sound –

and in the silence of sitting on the front porch –

it brings music to one’s ears.

The red bird bobs up and down and swivels around –

We also have on the other side of the house –

another set of the above although both are different in colors and wind chimes.

Made by different folks for sale –

A way to break the SOUNDS OF SILENCE –

while sitting on the porch in the glider!

The front porch –

a favorite of mine – I sit here daily –

saying hello to those who walk past-

Waving to friendly neighbors who pass in their cars.

Watching birds flying above – even eagles!

Sights – sounds – neighbors –

warm weather –

and even light rain with no wind!

A LOOK AROUND – SEE WHAT I SEE!

The dawn of a new day –

rising in the East – from the front driveway –

A hint or splash of color to come!

And then it is there – SUNRISE – the beginning of a new day –

In Cameron Woods Community –

Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

We choose our lot for this reason –

A place to sit on a covered porch-

and a place to see both SUNRISE and-

SUNSET off to the WEST from our front driveway.

Just walk out the front door-

and look to the EAST – SUNRISE –

And as here to the WEST –

and the SUNSET!

We love the weather –

having lived in the Snowbelt for fifty years –

And another 21 years in moderate temperature in NVA-

It is here –

that I finally call home!

Sun – Sand and Surf are just minutes away.

A LOOK AROUND – SEE WHAT I SEE!

Tammy – mother to Taylor and Cassidy –

twins – all share the same birthday.

The doctor said it was time to be born –

and it just so happened to be Tammy’s birthday –

They were premature –

not quite two pounds a piece –

but healthy.

Today – Taylor is 5’8″ and Cassidy is almost 5’6″ –

The Swedish genes being passed down from their MORMOR –

Sherry who is 5’10” –

is Tammy’s mother.

MORMOR-

with the grandkids and Tammy.

Today we try to get home-

as often as we can.

And they in turn come down to spend time.

FAMILY – MORMOR and grandkids!

A LOOK AROUND – SEE WHAT I SEE!

Papa’s World – A home with memories!

Before we even moved into our new home –

we purchased a SOLO STOVE fire pit!

Now – it is mostly for family and friends –

as I am not that much of a campfire person.

Growing up I experienced all of that –

But this fire pit is a little special.

Once you get it going –

it seems to be smokeless!

Unless you burn lumber scraps that have chemicals –

I learned not to do that!

I put in the four cement blocks-

in the middle of the back patio.

The family when they come like it –

and many s’mores are done here!

SOLO STOVE – if you are going this route –

I recommend this one!

A HOME WITH MEMORIES!

Stepping outside at dusk –

a view East from Cameron Woods Community!

If you look at a coastline map –

you will see from Charleston, S.C. –

To Wilmington, N.C. –

There is a coastline curve –

almost like a quarter moon –

This is unique-

in that, our beaches face SOUTH!

Our house sits North in the front –

and South in the back

The sun goes almost directly over the house giving our front porch –

almost full shade most of the day!

One of the reasons we came to this lot

in the early afternoon –

and saw that we would have shade-

in the front all day!

A HOME WITH MEMORIES!

Sherry –

while volunteering as a nesting parent –

ST2402 – NC WILDLIFE RESOURCES COMMISSION PERMIT!

We volunteer to do this-

and also walk the East End Of OIB!

Looking for where a Sea Turtle has come ashore –

and made a nest.

This keeps us busy the whole summer months.

Did you know –

for every 1000 baby Sea Turtles that hatch –

ONLY ONE MAKES IT TO ADULTHOOD!

Today there are human footprints in trash –

predators in fox – birds – crabs – fish –

It is a wonder any make it at all!

A HOME WITH MEMORIES!

We try to golf when we can –

with or without friends.

Living in this temperature allows us to golf year-round.

Buying the first tee card-

gives us a discount.

One of the reasons we selected this area to live in.

A HOME WITH MEMORIES!

Bob and Pam –

his wife and my grade school friend –

once a year on their RV trips –

they stop in-

and see us for a week or so,

All these years-

and still good buddies!

A HOME WITH MEMORIES!

Andrea and my son Troy-

when they visited.

They are trying to come back next summer.

Looking forward to seeing them.

Both excel in school and play the violin!

REFLECTIONS IN MEMORIES!

The Kinzua Bridge –

is located just outside Mount Jewett, Pa.

where Sherry was raised in her youth.

This is a historical railroad bridge,

half of which was toppled in a tornado.

Today it is a state park –

but she has many memories here.

Her father rode his snowmobile across this before it toppled over!

REFLECTIONS IN MEMORIES!

REFLECTIONS OF MEMORIES!

Papa’s World – More memories in time!

The KINZUA via duct – constructed in the 1800s –

to ship coal –

across the valley.

It stood over 300 feet from the valley floor.

Then – years ago – a Tornado ripped through the valley –

And took half the via duct down!

The state made this a state park –

with a state-of-the-art viewing center.

The half-bridge was saved –

and a platform at the end with a “WINDOW” floor –

You can look straight down over 300 feet-

to the floor of the valley.

The crumpled other half remains –

where it toppled over.

Today the bridge remains –

as a testament to days long ago!

This valley was part of the SENECA INDIAN NATIONS –

hunting grounds.

The reservation today stands some miles to the North in NYS!

A large CASINO was built on their lands and supports the Nation.

MORE MEMORIES IN TIME!

Two summers ago –

my sons with their partners –

came to visit and spend a week with us.

Shawn and Trisha have returned –

and next summer Troy and Andrea are trying to visit again!

The boys remained in NWPA-

and live there today.

Looking forward to seeing them once again.

MORE MEMORIES IN TIME!

This picture was taken in the early morning –

near the front entrance of our community!

This was what we thought to be a Coyote!

However –

it was later identified as an endangered “RED WOLF”!

We found out they are extinct in N.C. –

and the Wildlife Commission –

has released several back into the wild-

with tracking devices on them.

This one has been seen numerous times –

and we have seen it ourselves.

One person up the street –

spotted it with a black squirrel in its mouth heading into the woods.

It seems to stay away from people –

although we saw it one time from the car and it just stared at us!

MORE MEMORIES IN TIME!

LOL, I LIKE A SENSE OF HUMOR!

MORE MEMORIES IN TIME!

Papa’s World – Early years – memories!

6-25-1982 –

the day we were married –

Looking back – we combined two families –

her two daughters and my two sons.

My sons – we would have on weekends –

the rest of the time they lived with their mother.

Her daughters would go every second weekend-

to their father.

Long weekends were our “VACATIONS” back then.

We had a twelve-passenger second-hand van.

Packing picnic lunches and dinners –

going to state parks –

visiting family –

rarely overnights –

Camping – her father had a fifth wheel!

Money – well – we had none.

We did what we did –

and what we could afford –

It was a memorable time –

Many memories – fun times –

and we were together.

EARLY YEARS – MEMORIES!

Sherry – Bonnie and Debbie –

sisters!

Barb and Bill –

Mother and Father.

We spent a lot of time at their country house.

Her father had a workshop –

and he taught me a lot about finishing.

He was a union carpenter –

who made many – many fine furnishings.

we still have the hutch he made for Sherry –

and he made each of her sisters one.

They had a fifth-wheel camper –

we had tents for us and the kids.

We would meet them at the campground –

And their camper became home base for cooking –

and getting out of the rain.

Many fond memories of back in that time!

EARLY YEARS – MEMORIES!

This is so true –

the innocence of a child!

College soccer – first Maddy-

and now Ella who has completed her soccer senior year in college.

Travel teams for both granddaughters –

H.S. teams –

Journey to Lynchburg to watch both play-

Maddy – University of Lynchburg –

And Ella – Randolf College –

where as a Freshman –

She became the first to start and play all games as a freshman.

EARLY YEARS – MEMORIES!

Living life in our new neighborhood –

making new friends and neighbors.

We choose Cameron Woods Community –

Being close to two beaches –

and over 30 golf courses.

But – we have found new friends –

a plus of moving here –

and one couple has a cottage-

back where we lived in WNY!

Small world –

good friends and good neighbors.

EARLY YEARS – MEMORIES!

Our home here in N.C. –

No snow or ice –

cold – yes but the Sun warms it up!

Living in the South after the first 50 years in N.Y. and Pa.

We have found our new home after all these years.

EARLY YEARS – MEMORIES!

Taylor and Cassidy –

when they first lived with us-

as they were waiting to move into their new home.

Now – fourteen years old –

and in the eighth grade.

If only we could go back in time!

THE EARLY YEARS – MEMORIES!

COME BACK OFTEN – IT IS FREE!

Papa’s World – ST2402 permit – SEA TURTLES!

It is an early evening in August –

the middle of the month –

Sherry and I are dressed in our orange shirts –

shorts and carrying our flashlight-

that beams red in the darkness!

We are carrying our chairs –

as we leave the boardwalk and step onto the sand.

Beyond the “TRENCH” for the little turtles-

who hatch to make their way to the ocean –

lies a deserted evening beach.

We are almost near the end of the “SEASON” for beach vacations!

we meet at the nest – NUMBER 21 –

there have been 36 nests on the beach.

The sun is setting –

casting an orange glow over the vacationers who have gathered –

News has gone up and down the beach –

THE TURTLE NESTERS are waiting for the hatchlings to appear.

The ten team members have been all given their assignments –

when the hatchlings begin the escape from the chamber-

that contains them!

We know that this one contains 142 eggs –

Because it was relocated from below the tidal line –

to closer to the dune –

to keep it from being flooded out!

This would cause the baby Sea Turtles to drown!

Then – a small crack in the center of the chamber –

about an inch long.

While we are talking – the “DROP” happens!

The previous night – a full moon –

but this night the clouds set in – darkness prevailed!

We all assumed our positions –

The edging was set up going to the water line –

it was not yet high tide but was rising minute by minute.

A large crowd has gathered –

standing beyond the rope –

a barrier we erected to keep the eager crowd back –

so we had room to crawl-

on hands and knees along the trench.

We had to keep the baby turtles on their journey to the water –

in that trench.

Mainly to ensure they reached the water.

You see –

they go towards the white of the waves crashing on the shore –

and the sound of those waves.

When the moon is out they head toward the water.

On dark nights –

the lights from the beach houses draw them toward the dunes.

They will perish if they do that.

Foxes – birds – stray cats – birds and crabs –

they are a feast for all of them.

Thirty-five minutes later –

the last has reached my position at the end of the trench –

I guide “HER” –

I have named her PEGGY –

In my mind only –

after a dear friend who donated to the Sea Turtle Protection last year.

Now we have to sit in the nest for three days –

we had what is called a “BOIL”!

That is when all of them seem to come at once.

If this happens –

the Wildlife Resources Commission of N.C. –

Requires us to sit for three days in case any are left!

So – we thanked the crowd –

who mostly reframed from using lights –

phones and cameras.

These would blind the little turtles –

and then they are lost.

After the three days were up –

we did what is called an inventory required by the Commission.

Here you dig down and recover the egg shells –

and any small turtles that did not make it!

This gives the Commission the data they need –

and also tells us if our count was correct!

Which in the darkness –

is hard to see.

After –

you tear down the nest –

fill in the chamber –

and dig another hole to bury the eggshells in.

The foxes know where the old chamber is-

but we try to keep them from digging up the shells-

that were left.

NEST NUMBER 21 is officially closed –

we were right on the count made by the relocation team!

A big shout out to –

NEST NUMBER TWENTY ONE’s TEAM OF DEDICATED MEMBERS!

All of us moved on to other nests –

and new team members.

A big thank you to LIZ in the middle of the trench as team leader-

even though she was pregnant – CHEERS!

As the moon comes up over the ocean –

another night has ended for our volunteer work-

Sitting on the beach at night from 7 to 11 pm.
