Papa’s World – Muirs Beach

We were on our way for our appointment –

To enter Muir ‘s Forest to see the Redwoods –

when we got redirected to Muir’s Beach –

because we were 15 minutes early !

Good Morning

Not knowing anything about this –

It was another unexpected visit to something we had not planned !

Now we had to drive about ten minutes down the Mountain –

and it was FOGGY !

In the parking lot – I could see all these houses on the hill side

and the fog was just lifting.

Walk way to the beach

When he said beach -my first thought was –

there must be a small lake somewhere up here !

And when we got there

A cluster of houses dotted the hill side

Who lives way out here and how do they get food ?

How dumb was I ?

Well – this was no pond- lake –

It was a BEACH on the COVE of the OCEAN !

Now I understood why all the houses and there must be another road !

We had been directed to the Ocean

and all the while we were in the mountains driving to Muir’s Forest

I had no idea on the other side of the mountain

we were that close !

later found out one of Sherry’s woman’s group

actually taught school there!

Papa’s World – The Path of life – John Muir.

On one of our trips across the World – we ventured to California.

Sherry and Papa

We found some very large Redwoods in a place called MUIR’S FOREST!

It was very foggy that day and we had no idea what we would see for it was a drive through hills

a road that went up and down and around – steep sides to fall thousands of feet.

And then we came to a parking lot that seemed out in the middle of nowhere.

Our paved road was no longer – it was sand and dirt.

And it proved to be after the fog lifted – near the Ocean.

Houses were there but first, we had to walk that dirt path through the woods.

Magnificant woods they were – Ancient trees hundreds of feet tall and big enough around

you could lock arms with a dozen people and not have enough to encircle the base.

WE WERE IN MUIR’S REDWOOD FOREST!

We were off the paved highway and onto the dirt path – sometimes to see the beauty

you have to get your feet dirty and experience the wonder of nature.

Papa’s World – Walking the path around the pond – at Cameron Woods – “INTO THE WOODS”!

In my last blog – you could see “WOODIE” sunbathing!

The resident GATOR of our pond although people have seen two of them in there!

In case you missed the last blog – here is WOODIE!

Now – we are walking into the woods full of Carolina Pine trees and Living Oak Trees!

Sherry heading to the bend and up a small grade and then into the pine needle-covered path!

This section is kind of scary even in the daylight!

When you get in there – the path is orange colored from all the pine needles.

Great cover for COPPERHEADS!

Although we have not seen any of the snakes – other people have – but we did see a large black snake!

And it was on the black gravel path just before the bend on the path straight ahead of Sherry.

Sherry enters the path and forest.

She watches the trees and branches while I watch the ground and sides.

I have seen several deer back in here – never any snakes but this area has them!

You can see that you do not want to go off that path – at least we don’t!
It is also much cooler in here and on a hot day a welcomed relief!

This is all protected land and will not be clearcut.

It is quiet in here – just the sounds of the birds!

And quiet also when you walk on a bed of pine needles!

Coming to the end of the path through the woods.

Papa’s World – MUIR’S FOREST – Part two

GOOD MORNING

As we walked among the giants – the peace and quiet became evident –

from watching the man push his wife up the path in a wheel chair

to the lady who quietly said ” Would you like for me to take your picture ” ?

And that is how we managed to have a picture

with all of us standing inside this huge Redwood tree !

And then the tree that I hid inside and peaked out –

I am told that the really big Redwoods are further North

Where you can drive a car through –

To think this tree is between 600 and 1600 years old !

And then we entered Cathedral Grove –

Instantly all was quiet

A church like atmosphere –

everyone was hushed at the grand gathering of trees !

Walking among them – looking up and then ahead –

taking in the beauty of these giants !

Our day was coming to a close –

after nearly two hours walking among the trees

Time to gather and have a quick lunch

Time to say goodbye to Muir Forest – home of the giant Redwoods !

Papa’s World – MUIR’S FOREST – REDWOODS

Finally – after visiting Muir’s Beach – it was time to retrace our route

and back to the reserved parking lot – to visit THE REDWOODS !

MUIR’S FOREST IN THE DISTANCE

So many pictures – so much awesome forest and trees –

that I have decided to break this down into a series.

MUIR WOODS

I have never seen a forest such as this –

so pristine – so awesome –

But – in the middle of all this –

a flash from the past –

A PAY PHONE !

You look up and up and still up !

Upon entering – a telling of Muir Forest
The history

This forest has been here for

some say 1600 years at least !

The roots are shallow

It was explained to me – that this is the perfect storm so to speak.

One – between 42 and 68 degrees –

FOG – these are the only trees to absorb moisture through their leaves !

The protection from the winds in their valleys.

And – their root systems being shallow –

they intertwine with one another !

I wonder why all the older trees hollow out on the bottom ?
