Papa’s World – lessons in life

Here we are – just a few days away from packing up

and leaving for our five month rental of a condo

in North Myrtle beach!

That has gone by so fast!

We have been living with our two daughters

and their family’s

going back and forth.

We have also been traveling and seeing friends.

Our lives from the past fourteen years

have changed in dramatic form!

We sold our home – most of the furniture

rented a storage unit for mostly personal things

and set our sights on going further South

To explore our options

NO MORTGAGE NO TAXES NO HOA FEES

In other words – we are vagabonds – not quite homeless

and searching for what we want to do next!

Grand children minus one in college

We will miss them – but – we are free to travel back and forth

and we will see them as often as we can.

We have purchased a new car – after seven years and 126,000 miles

So we made the change – pandemic and all.

It was time – the housing market had rebounded

We do not know what the future holds

But – now – at our age – is the right time.

Tammy and Debby

It will not be easy for them

as they both followed us here to NVA 21 years ago

But – we promise to be back often.

And now you will have a place to vacation to come to.

The Sun sets on this part of our lives

But begins with a Sunrise on the next part.

Remember the good times

and think of the memories we shall make in the future

We will once again begin new lessons in life

and those lessons will include all of you

with much love – Papa & MORMOR

Papa’s World – A little bit of this & that – a piece of me!

We have bought and sold FIVE houses in our 38 years of marriage.

And – each one I have left behind a little bit of myself!

Our first house was in the country – EAST WINDFALL ROAD –

outside Olean New York – but Portville N.Y. school district.

The driveway was a 1/10 th. of a mile long.

Great for sled riding in Winter but also getting stuck in the snow!

At that house – Sherry’s father and I built large butchers block –

multiple colors of wood – glued together – light and dark and oiled.

It was large and took up the full counter to the right of the stove.

It replaced that counter top.

It was really something and he taught me so much

as he was a master carpenter.

Our second house was Pleasant acres drive – Portville N.Y.

At that house I left a tiled floor in both the laundry room and the half bath.

As well as nearly 50 % of the basement.

My very first tile work.

I also replaced all the molding and door frames with the help of her father.

And we installed chair molding in the dining room.

But the secret was the finish – he taught me just how to get that high finish.

Tricks he used using cheese cloth to strain the stain – steel wool it –

and apply coat after coat until it almost was like a mirror!

Our third house was Fountain side lane in Fairfax Va.

Here I painted the entire ceiling and walls of the garage –

having to close the garage door and it got really hot in there.

I also went into the woods there and followed a small stream

and collected all sizes and colors of limestone rocks.

I used them by the eaves spouts for when it rained

and let the water gush over them like a stream.

I installed dimmer light switches for the dining room

and pained rooms.

Our next house was Ridgetop Commons – just a few blocks from the last one.

Both houses were about 2 miles from the NRA headquarters

and George Mason University.

At this house I put down sand and gravel a

and installed blocks for our patio under the deck

I also installed a small swing for our grand daughters

During that time when we first moved in –

the water drain backed up – we had to vacate –

They had to come in and dig up the driveway and to the middle of the road.

When they built the place –

someone broke the main drainage line

connecting to the main sewage line in the middle of the road.

Here we had a 15 foot hole in our driveway & to the middle of the street.

They put us up at the Hyatt in Reston until they fixed it!

But – I wrote my full name and date in the cement of that driveway!

I also built and installed a platform in that garage for storage.

In our last house on Minerva drive in Brambleton Va,

This was our dream home – thinking we would be here –

never moving again.

I built this patio out the back door

and moved

and took out all the bushes on the whole yard.

I planted all the bushes and trees by hand – mostly on my knees

as the ground is full of rocks and I dug them out with a garden trough.

I planted everything and it comes back each year.
Every tree and bush I planted
I moved these from the front yard
The last things I planted were these bushes and the Swedish Roses – given to us from our close friends in memory of Sherry’s mother Barb ( GIGI)

I have often thought in my mind to return and see if it all is still there

after 38 years have gone by!

Yes – I have left a little bit of this and that where ever we have lived!

I somehow remember them all!

There is a piece of me all over –

but for the most part I am the only one who knows.

Except my name – set in cement with the date

On Timber Meadows Drive- Fairfax Va.

And by the way – I also installed a ceiling fan there

in the Master Bedroom – and while up on my metal step ladder

a storm blew in just as I was connecting it up –

And rain poured and lightening flashed –

Thunder roared and scared me – here I was – standing on that ladder

But my name is engraved on that driveway- and the date.

I will always remember that fan! LOL

Papas World – looking around – almost done!

I am looking around the house – we have the car loaded up for one more run

to the storage unit and then to our daughters house.

We stopped at Home Depot and bought two more small boxes –

A medium size one another wardrobe one.

This chair will stay here – it matches the bedroom set

which they purchased.

My clothes are in a suitcase –

A carry bag and some piled on the floor.

The utilities have been called – shut off date – the paper will be canceled.

As I look around – almost all that is still here will remain.

The final finish line is in sight – all the keys collected –

put into plastic bags and marked.

I am writing down things I think they should know.

We will be staying with our daughters until we decide when to leave

for the winter.

We will visit friends and family as we have been invited.

I look around – it has been a good run – our home – our base – our dream.

We are in this together – and we shall go on – new adventures await.

Papas World – down to the last – finally I sleep.

I guess it is in my DNA – whenever I have a task before me –

I push ahead until I finish it!

I think it also is in the Tarot Cards of life –

Me being born a Taurus

strong willed – plows ahead – like a Bull!

And it has a effect on those around me.

That is why I am much better off working alone –

Plodding ahead one step at a time.

For that – I am deeply sorry –

It is a inborn trait –

And drives my wife crazy!

Now – as I sit here – we have accomplished in one week

what normally would take most people weeks to do!

We are 98 % packed up – moved to storage –

all that is left is the pantry – some bathroom items –

and our clothes which we already have moved 60%!

She is a saint for putting up with me!

She has cleaned out and packed up 99 % of everything!

She insists on wrapping it all and putting into boxes

crates – I seal them up – pick them up ( heavy)

Move to garage to stage –

and then into the car –

either to the storage unit or Salvation Army –

Project Hope – or our daughters house!

Our daughter Tammy

We are using Tammy & Marcus house as sort of a home base

We also will take turns staying with Our other daughter Debby!

Debby – our daughter

Debby and Mike have helped us whenever we asked

moving the heavy stuff to providing another van to pack in!

At Debby’s house with grand daughters
At Tammy’s house with grand daughters
With my little bud – Bode

I look around – the buyers actually purchased 95 % of our furniture

as they had none transferring back to the states from abroad.

So – we did not have to move the heavy items

but in the kitchen alone – there are 22 cupboards & 22 drawers!

As Sherry said – packed full and she is going to not buy

ANYMORE STUFF! LOL

Debby – Sherry – Tammy

At last I have been able to sleep more than a hour.

And I owe it all to these three –

It is not easy being with me when I am focused

But she has calmed me down and led me through all of this.

Thank you Debby and Tammy for being there for me
And thank you to my wife

for working through all of this with me – you are a angel.

I am relaxed now – sleeping – laughing – and we are once again walking –

We have time now –

Thank you for reading PAPA’S WORLD

WHERE FRIENDS MEET THE FAMILY!

We will be traveling – not buying for a while

And I promise to calm my TAURUS SOUL!

Papas World – Packing up “STUFF” – WOW!

Now that we have sold the house – we continue to clean out cupboards!

How in the world did we accumulate all the “STUFF”?

Men go shopping – straight in and back out again!

Women go shopping and “STUFF” happens!

Another morning – another cupboard – another card board box-

Never ending – it seems I fill up the garage space

then load into our Prius V – with the seats folded down.

And off to the storage unit we go with “STUFF”!

I have to admit – some of the “STUFF” is mine.

But it is “STUFF” I use! LOL

Dealing with “STUFF” is much like above picture –

It is endless!

I learned a long time ago –

“IT IS NOT FOR ME TO QUESTION WHY? BUT FOR ME TO DO OR DIE!”

“STUFF” can’t live without it!

Or so I am told!

Sherry – my wife – is the proud owner of “STUFF” –

and that is why I fell in love with her all those years ago.

“STUFF” is what marriages are made of –

Good “STUFF” – Bad “STUFF” – Together “STUFF”

“STUFF” is what makes the World go around!

No one I would rather have “STUFF” with than my wife – Sherry –

She is what “STUFF” in life for me is all about!

Papa World – now the work begins – packing!

For me – I never set the alarm – I just wake up!

Now – that we have a agreed upon sale of the house

PACKING has taken on a whole new term.

We had done a awful lot in the previous three weeks.

The buyer has offered to buy furniture –

all we had to do was list the items and price them.

That took hours as they had no furniture

and we wanted to rid ourselves of as much as we could!

So – now we wait – what exactly do they want?

So – we continue to PACK – items that we know are going to the storage unit.

You see – we have no plans to buy another house right away!

We simply want to step back from home ownership

No taxes – no HOA fees – no lawn care –

although that was the best part for me – working the lawn!

Our plans are to search out the area first –

See where we would like to live

but in the mean time we have homes to go to.

The kids will take us in!

But – we also want to travel –

so even though we will be there – we also will be gone a lot!

We will visit friends – we will take a trip back home to NYS!

And we plan on staying the Winter in Florida – somewhere!

PACKING – each cupboard – closet – boxes – crates all marked.

We will get through this – OH DID I MENTION!

We have to be out in THREE WEEKS!

So – there in is the problem –

not knowing as of right now – what the buyers will buy from us

What furniture they actually will purchase.

So – I walk around and past them –

To PACK things we know are going!

We are happy – we are alive – we are excited

AND WE ARE PACKING!

LIFE IS GOOD – PASS ME THE TAPE GUN!

Thank you for reading Papa’s World

WHERE FRIENDS MEET THE FAMILY!

NOW THE WORK BEGINS – PACKING!
