Papa’s World – I choose to be me – #livinglifetotheplus –

Now that I am 70 years old ( young ) – time to reflect -just how did I get here and where am I going down that long ( sometimes) journey of life !

My niece Terri and my brother Mike – with me in the middle

When I was born – I already had a brother ten years old at the time and a sister fifth teen years old . So – I was like the second family – and it stayed that way until I was four plus ten months – and then Mike came – shortly before that – my sister – who had married – gave birth to Terri.

My early childhood – was spent with my Grand Ma – who lived with us at that time – she was in her late 70’s and early 80’s. She was Penn. Dutch – and they had twelve children. They lived on a farm and grand pa – was a big man. The story goes during the depression – he would carry meat and flour to the neighbors to help them out. There was no money – but he had a kind heart. I never knew him as he passed before I was born in ’49 – he was hoisting a pig up to the barn rafters and suffered a heart attack. There is a family history of heart attacks on this side – all his sons suffered the same .

David and Nora Aiken – my grand parents -who lived ” Down Home ” in Pa.Corsica.

She cared for me while my parents worked – my Mom at Alcas – now known as Cutco – in Olean N.Y. and my dad as a supervisor in the oil fields for South Penn oil company , known as Penns. oil.

Tom at around age 2 or 3.

It was at this time my mother would not let me take my shirt off outside – she said ” People will think I am starving you ” ! You could count every vein and bone on my chest ! Today – well – you would be hard pressed to find either ! Where did that go !!

My great – great grand father and grand mother – Frank Schick and Sara.

I do not know much about them – other then when young – my grandmother Nora – left home and followed the lumber camps through out Pa. cooking meals and that is where she met my grand father David. But – I am told that they were Pa. Dutch .

My father – Clarence Russel Fitzsimmons

My father – he would take me to work with him when I was young- to the oil fields – I still remember the smells and the sounds. The chill air and all the big bull dozers. The tool houses that they pulled around and me riding in the seat next to Pat Murphy. Then there was Junior Greenman – and a host of other colorful men – the mud and Earth chewed up by the tracks of the dozer. My dad passed early in my life – when I had just turned 19. His family came from Ireland – County Tyrone – so I was told. A tale of FIVE brothers who came here in the mid 19th. century. Seeking fame and fortune, only to find that IMMIGRANTS such as they were – looked down on – and treated very badly – in that aspect – not much has changed – will we ever learn ?

My mother – Mary Aiken Fitzsimmons who lived to be almost 98 !

Mary – as most people called her – MOM to me – she was small but feisty – she ruled – talked soft – but I listened to her – we all did. She outlived my younger brother and my older sister. She wore a ball cap that said – ” I’M THE BOSS ” ! But she also could bake – pies – buns – cakes and home made bread ! She was known all over for that. And she also was known to a LOT of people. She would sit on her front porch – and all day long – as cars went past – horns would honk- windows come down and a big ” HELLO MARY” would come forth. If I were there – I would ask her who that was -she would just say ” OH , SOMEONE , THEY ALL DO IT ” !!!!

My brother in law Bill and my sister Donna & me.

My sister Donna – she also helped to raise me – my Mom would walk my brother and me down the street at 5:45 am. We would walk the long steps up to their apartment – and lie down in the little room set aside with a couch. Here we would sleep another hour until she would wake us up to eat and then off to school. Bill – my brother in law – was the town Police chief – but also drove all over the East coast delivering meat for White Hawk Meat Company. One time up near Boston – he was at a truck stop – and in came a crew from a radio station. Looking for a human interest story. They interviewed him – as he was both a Police chief and a truck driver – and that show aired on the radio – he got a copy of it – Larry King did the interview ! My mother outlived both of them.

My brother Roger and me.

Growing up – I had one hero in life – my brother Roger, I looked up to him and tried my best to be just like him. He was my idol and ten years older. He went away to college and became a national ” WHO’S WHO” – from all over the USA. He went into the Navy in OCS- and was a LT. during the ‘NAM war. He never came back to our home town to live – I moved into his bedroom after he left for college. I still remember all the things he left behind – on the walls – the club room he and his friends had in our basement. In his later years – after his wife passed – we would spend our Winters with him in The Villages in Florida – where this picture was taken. Hero’s and idols – I had one – and it was him.

1967 – senior picture – Tom Fitzsimmons

My life as I know it – I am writing this now because I am the last one living. All have now gone before me. I needed to get it down for my sons – grand children – great nieces and great great nephew. My brothers children and their children. A history of growing up in a little town called Eldred in NWPA. In the mountains so lush and green.

I am in the autumn of my own life – and the main purpose of this blog is to record the memories I have. As I have been writing daily for the past 8 years – only to have them somewhere in face book land.

Tom & Sherry Fitzsimmons

I owe this all to my wife – Sherry – who encourages me to write it down as she often says. So – with that being said – going back to the beginning –

“Where does it say we have to “ACT” our age ?”

As long as it makes me happy and I’m not hurting anyone –

” I WILL ACT WHATEVER AGE I WANT TO ” !

Besides – I learned a long time ago – when you are married –

” IT’S NOT FOR ME TO QUESTION WHY – BUT FOR ME TO DO OR DIE ” !!! LOL

Enjoy and remember #livinglifetotheplus

Papa’s World – #livinglifetotheplus

What do you do with your strawberry plants in the Fall from the TOWER GARDEN ?

Every year – and we have been growing in the Tower Garden ‘ s for seven years – we have had strawberry plants left over – so – instead of throwing them away – I just took them out and stuck them in the ground !

We have this area right beside the house where my back flow is . And now – each year – these plants come back and thrive there ! Last year – I picked 10 to 14 quarts of sweet strawberries – and they spread.

This area was dug up two years ago to install our irrigation system and you can see where they put in the back flow. So – in two years time – they have spread and filled the area back in again.

Three cousins – we promote #livinglifetotheplus to our families.

The concept of healthy eating – is that we GROW as much as we can – for ourselves. The two smaller ones – Cassidy and Taylor – will come over – and when the strawberries are nice and red and ripe – will sit out there and pick and eat them – teaching them you can eat from the Earth and not always from the store. Taylor asked me the other day ” ARE THE STRAWBERRIES READY YET PAPA ? “

As we enter the setting Sun of our years

Our wish – and the WHY we do all this – is to install for Generations to come the value of eating healthy – eliminating process foods – cutting back on sweets and dairy ( the Myth of dairy ) – Gluten – and eating more fruits and vegetables – passing this onto the grand kids of today and hoping that they in turn pass it onto their children.

We named our team – TEAM GENERATIONS

Life to us is changing habits – instilling new ones in the kids – and inhance memories of growing up with PAPA & MORMOR as the younger ones callus or Grandma and Grandpa as the older ones call us.

Memories are formed at young age – as in Taylor just saying the other day – she is 8 years old. Her and her parents and sister lived with us for one year while they awaited there new home being made ready. Sherry and I were having a conversation – about in the future moving South.

She spoke up from her homework ( we pick them up from school ) and said ” MORMOR & PAPA – you can’t move -I have too many memories here” ! And then went on to tell how she remembers her bedroom and how they shared it together – her mother and fathers room and the front room where they had their doll house. They were only two and one half when they lived here.

Last Summer – Outer Banks Beach

So memories play a big part of our lives – and grand kids even bigger. Instilling memories of us and health is the legacy we want to have – one that enriches their lives and that of their children. That memory has led to our motto #livinglifetotheplus and our own health and lifestyle. This in turn led to the concept of TEAM GENERATIONS and the impact that since we started has on hundreds of families just like us.

If you want to find out how – why and more – follow us on this blog – visit the web site http://www.sf.juiceplus.com – I hope this helps explain – and if you TOWER GARDEN – just remember -those STRAWBERRIES can and do survive the Winter – just plant them and watch them spread.

Surviving the WIDOW MAKER one year later – through HEALTH & NUTRITION !

2014-10-24 08.30.09

Exactly one year ago today , at 11:30 AM. The call went into the Fire & Rescue !  My co-worker had come out into the warehouse and found me sitting at my desk and asked me if I was okay ? To which I replied “NO” ! I told him to make the call , and then he brought me two baby aspirin.

( This was written over five years ago – in a few months – I will celebrate five years since this was written. Today – I am still here – and my story continues – staying the course – still taking  Juice Plus – and still living – )

You see , I had struggled all morning with what I thought was shoulder pain caused by over exertion. The pain would come and go. For four and one half hours this happened! I actually got sick twice going into the men’s room to vomit – but nothing happened. And I would feel okay after that. It wasn’t until I broke into a cold sweat and my arm started to feel like it was in a vice that I KNEW!

I WAS HAVING A HEART ATTACK !  The ambulance came – and I actually stood up and placed myself on the stretcher. As they wheeled me outside – the only thought I had , was make it stop hurting – my arm was KILLING me no pun intended!

Once inside with the doors open and it just being above freezing – off came my jacket and shirts. They tried to run the EKG! It would not work – they took my pressure – it was high and climbing! Again , the EKG! Not working. They put a port in my left arm and for the third time – tried the EKG! Not working. I listened to them talking – “NO – WE ARE NOT GOING TO THE NEAREST HOSPITAL – WE HAVE TO GET HIM TO THE HEART CENTER!!!”

Off we went – sirens on – lights flashing – and then they tried one more time – EKG – IT WORKED !!  It showed I was having a heart attack – not your ordinary one – but one that is known as “THE WIDOW MAKER!”  I believe GOD was watching over me – the EKG did not work three straight times and after they decided to by pass three other hospitals – to go to the best Heart Unit in the city – well , when we started and then it worked – I really believe it was in God’s hands.

It was a 30 minute drive – and all the way there they were monitoring me – that is when they got out the electrical shock pads. I asked them why ??  Your blood pressure just spiked! How high I asked ??   280 over 180 as they punctured my right wrist to put the second port in and blood splattered out !

We arrived – the artery was 100 % blocked by a blood clot !  It was just as you see on TV. Doors flung open – shouting of get out of the way – through the doors and down the hall running at full speed. They were waiting all dressed up in their surgery gowns.

Off came my remaining clothes – I was being prepped My arm hurt – and then – it seemed like only minutes – the pain went away and a face appeared over me looking down . How are you feeling he asked?  I actually felt normal , no pain , nothing ! So I told him that and he said they had just inserted a stent !      And I never even felt it !        I had survived !

There are three reasons in my mind of why I survived that day . The first and foremost is the life style change my wife installed nine years before. We had actually switched our diets to health & nutrition – doing away with  the fast food – sodas –  milk – and most dairy & meat – preservatives &  dyes – and just generally staying the course.     And then we added a supplement called JUICE PLUS of over 30 different fruits – veggies – berries and two grains – that I have faithfully taken for nine years.

Second is the fast response of my co-workers – one in particular who made the call and brought me the aspirin. Those that stood by and with me during the wait – holding my hand – talking to me!

And third – I believe that God was watching over me – that EKG not working and their  taking me to the best place I could be – the heart cardio unit in Fairfax. And then the EKG started working as soon as we pulled out and headed to the unit.

I survived THE WIDOW MAKER and am her to tell about it. The change of lifestyle and the supplements were my insurance – I am sure that had I not done this – it would of been a no brainer – I WOULDN’T BE HERE! So , last week , we attended a conference for THE JUICE PLUS COMPANY in Memphis Tenn.

I celebrated  being alive there , and know with out the change in lifestyle – I would not be writing this today !

Papa’s World – IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME !

It was dark – only the street lights were on – cold wind – we were bundled up

We started our walk down the street – I was 9 – my brother 5.

It was a cold Winter day – pre dawn –

and we walked behind my mother.

You – see – my parents both worked –

my dad had already left for the oil fields

My Mom – she would be picked up by Oscar and Glady’s in twenty minutes

We – in turn –

would walk to my sister’s apartment –

Where we would lay back down and sleep until breakfast !

So it went – those early years –

my sister and brother in law –

lived a few houses away .

Bill – Donna – Tom

If I could turn back time –

I would love to see them again.

She was the kindest person you could ever meet –

And Bill ( Willy ) –

one of the funniest men you would ever know.

After my grand ma passed away –

it was Donna who watched over me.

She was fifth teen years older than I –

I wanted to be where ever they were.

This was Donna –

always seeing both sides

and understanding .

Bill – was a meat cutter –

truck driver –

police chief and Mayor !

He also played first base on our town team base ball squad.

That is where I first remember him –

as my dad was the manager.

He was fair in what ever he did –

all my friends –

could of been in trouble –

But he wisely led them straight .

He has a nick name for every one of us –

except me –

he called me Tommy –

which endeared me to him.

My gratitude to the both of them is endless –

Both – were always there for me –

Many times –

in H.S. she would talk with me –

( She cut my hair until I was in my twenties )

As would Bill –

It was a small town –

everyone knew your name –

If I could turn back time for just one day –

They all are in heaven now –

I am the last –

But –

The abundance of life comes through the love they gave me –

If I could turn back time –

Just one more hug –

one more smile –

EVERY ONE HAS A STORY

Today –

this is my story –

my thought –

IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME

Papa’s World – MERMAID CLUB – DO NOT ENTER

You see – they have this club – the little ones that is –

called “THE MERMAIDS” – you must believe in order to enter !

The CLUB rules

It’s a rare club – only those ( the girls ) are allowed in – but little Bode – is a guest – but not a Mermaid !

Bode – a guest – just how can you keep him out !!!

The club was formed a few years ago – there was a planning session – at a Soccer game ( Maddy’s) and they convened – making it hush – hush !

Looking up club rules for the MERMAID CLUB

RULE # ONE – you must believe – you must recite the chant – and like water!

Maddy and Ella

Even though you like water – you can not belong if you do not believe – just ask Maddy and Ella – who were left out !

THE CLUB

The club ‘ s picture was drawn just before we checked out on the turn around – declaring the member’s.

The main three

As the years go by – and they continue to grow up –

“THE MERMAID CLUB ” will always be a part of it –

imagination – the remembering their youth – innocence –

three little girls and one boy.

ON THE BEACH – ALL SIX GRAND KIDS

My memory shall be not only the MERMAID CLUB –

but sharing a week – smiling – watching – seeing them come together –

and one little boy in awe of his sisters and cousins – looking at them !

Tom & Sherry – PAPA & MORMOR

This blog is about family memories –

a time that I have put down in writing – and photo’s –

to share but foremost –

a place to look back on and reflect on just another day in my life.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do –

memories are a test of time

Having a place to read and see them is priceless !

Thank you !

Papa’s World – sometimes – in a storm – you take shelter- other times – you just ride it out – we look upward and beyond.

Storm clouds – we keep the faith

In 1999 – we took a chance – and we both transferred from SWNY state to NVA with the company we had worked for – taking all of our time and benefits with us. It was to us a Leap Of Faith – leaving behind security and friends and family.

The storm was brewing – we steadied our life

But – excitement also was in the air – we left our little church behind – put our faith in God’s hands – and ventured South – from rural farm – country – to city life – right smack in the middle of Alexandria Va. A town of less than a thousand to a city of more than a million. ( D.C. ) area.

Our new home – after 8 years of searching – Community Lutheran Church

We searched for eight years – almost every Lutheran church in the area – finally finding Community Lutheran Church in Sterling Va. This was the church our daughter – Tammy – married Marcus in and was his home church and that of his family. We had found a home.

It has now been twelve plus years – and even though the storm has ceased – we find comfort in walking through those doors – open arms and friends. Truly a Community !

Today our faith in humanity rests with in these walls.

In today’s World – our faith provides us with comfort – and also the outreach in the community. We saw this 12 years ago – and it is us. When we left – we did not know where we would worship – but it is here – all are welcome – service to the community and other religions – all faiths – we found a home among the brewing clouds – just as today the clouds are around – we maintain our faith and our church.

Passing it on to the next generation

And we are able to share that with the next generation – after all – that is but one facet of life – the here and now – #livinglifetotheplus – kids are free – free to see the community of church.

Family

Family – friends – storms may brew – but life together forms a bond – one that comes together in our new life so far away from back home – we found a new home – Community Lutheran Church – Sterling Va.

I hope this gives insight into dramatic moves – ones that up root your lives – ones that cause you to search and find your new roots – God Bless !

Papa’s World – weekend ? In retirement you count the days by Garbage !

I never imagined – back when – as I neared retirement – I would sometimes not remember what day of the week it was ! Nor – would I ever wonder – with the hours of each day – “HOW DID I EVER FIND TIME TO WORK”?

You want to stay Young ? You want to stay active ? To do that – at least I find – the way I remember – is that Monday night is put out the GARBAGE – and pick up is Tuesday ! Now – that I remember for some reason. Also – I know it is Monday – because that is the day Tammy – our daughter – closes her store up , Kids 529 Consignment shop ! So – she does not work that day – and in the school year – I do not pick up the twins from school.

Bode – Cassidy and Taylor- Tammy & Marcus little ones.

The rest of the week – each day – I go and wait in a car line to pick up the girls – and I get there early – so I am usually second in line – and the line when school is out is about 70 or more cars ! So – I am prepared – I take my water -maybe a snack- a pillow – and leave the car on – it is a Hybrid so it mostly runs on the battery. I kick the seat back and turn my favorite radio show on – 106.7 – the Sports radio show that covers the D.C. area.

Sometimes I even drift off for a power nap!

Cassidy – Bode & Taylor 8 – 4 – 8 years old.

That takes me up to Tuesday – garbage day and pick up the girls day. Wednesday is take the twins to choir day – and meet Granny -( Jennie )- Marcus mother – who picks up Bode every day from preschool.

She takes him home and when Marcus is done – he picks him up and then will come to our house and pick up the twins.

But – Wednesday is church choir and all three sing – even Bode who can not read but will memorize the words and they are good singers.

We now have covered Monday thru Wednesday . Thursday – I start preparing again for garbage day – but also recycle day – by setting everything out for pick up on Friday !

At National Harbor – Washington D.C. Sherry’s shirt says it all!

There are also days that we will journey into D.C. for special trips – taking all the grand kids – we took the two oldest – Maddy and Ella – and got off at Arlington – took in the Tomb of the Unknown soldier and then walked across the 14 th. street bridge and spent the day at all the memorials – walking the Mall and having lunch. We walked miles that day and they loved it.

So – that leaves Friday – the day the GARBAGE & RECYCLES are picked up. I count the days by that format – very seldom do I know the exact date – I can look at the top of the paper – or my phone.

On Oahu – North Shore NO CARES – NO WORRIES #livinglifetotheplus

But to be perfectly honest with you – being retired – it does not really matter – I also count down days by what we have scheduled coming up ! Yes -we PLAN- put it down in writing – search and research – add names of visitors to come – the dates and what we are going to do. Some people can not do that for whatever reason – but not us – WE DO IT! Such as so goes our life – we live life to the plus one day at a time – but we know what is ahead – after all – for us – that is part of the excitement – just like little kids – “HOW MANY SLEEPS ARE LEFT PAPA ” ?

And then the early morning comes and you head out – all part of that special time – now I look back – and I wonder – JUST HOW DID I FIND TIME TO WORK ?

RETIREMENT – YOU COUNT THE DAYS BY GARBAGE – the weekends – well they are just another day -most times you just do not care !

#livinglifetotheplus PAPA’S WORLD !

Papa’s World – if you could do one thing – what would Cher do ?

GOOD MORNING

Most of you know or heard the song –

” IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME ” CHER

Well – the other day – as I was searching my phone –

I came across some pictures –

and as the saying goes –

A picture is worth a thousand words !

Cassidy and Taylor
our twin grand daughters

When their parents sold their house – and they were in between housing

They came to stay with us –

This is what they were like – five and one half years ago !

Oh – if only I could – I would return to those days !

THIS IS ME

I remember oh so well –

The downstairs bathroom door was shut –

I could hear them –

giggling –

I opened the door –

and there they were –

They had their dolls and doll clothes and were playing house.

They looked up at me and did exactyly what they are doing in this picture

” IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME ” CHER

Taylor – Sarah – Cassidy
Note the shoes on Cassidy

And then whenever the others visited –

It was always these three –

Sarah is the older cousin –

and to this day they still have this bond.

Taylor – Sarah – Cassidy

Taylor has always been the bigger of the two –

“I AM SMALLER – BUT ONE DAY I WILL GROW UP “

says Cassidy –

CASSIDY DOES

Today – Taylor rides horses – Cassidy does Gymnastics

Sarah does classical dance –

A few years ago –

All three were MERMAIDS !

“IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME ” CHER.

Today – they live only a mile away –

Such a short distance –

But time is passing –

Such a fast pace –

Taylor – she just has that all knowing look

Taylor is growing up so fast –

soon to be nine years old

who writes about horses and how to care for them

who – can saddle a horse –

clean the hoof

And ride with no hands

Cassidy – the sweet smile

Cassidy – always practicing her cartwheels –

her round offs and back stand overs

The one who can make anything

as she watches the instructions from you tube

Who always pushes –

everything to the edge.

And now there is Bode

And now in that span – there is Bode –

who looks and acts exactly like Cassidy .

He soon will be five

Trucks – bikes – lego’s

All boy

Bode – Cassidy – Taylor
Taylor – MorMor – Cassidy
Sherry is MorMor to all three

” IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME ” CHER .

Time is going on – memories are the past –

But these pictures are my gateway backwards

Bode- Cassidy – Taylor – Sarah – Ella – Maddy
Grandchildren

” IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME ” CHER.
