Papa’s World – Memories from the past.

My late brother kept this article from the magazine in The Villages.

In his later years, before he passed away –

We would leave NVA and travel to Florida to his home in The Villages.

We would spend six to eight weeks with him as he was all alone.

He asked us numerous times to sell our home and move into his house with him.

We just could not do this at that time.

This picture was taken by a journalist who worked for the magazine while we were down there the previous winter.

He would show all his friends that his brother and sister-in-law made the “PRESS”! LOL

Many fond memories of the times we spent with him in his years after his wife passed away.

MEMORIES FROM THE PAST!

The two days we had continuous snow back in Brambleton, VA.

We lived just behind the Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C.

They recorded 48 inches in less than 48 hours!

Here is our enclosed patio, and the snow accumulated up past the windows!

We lived for 50 years in NWPA and WNY and never experienced anything like this.

We were supposed to leave for Florida to see my brother in a couple of days-

And we had to wait a week for the roads to be cleared.

And then it was only one lane in each direction!

It was pretty, but way too much!

MEMORIES FROM THE PAST!

Cindy – Sherry and Dottie – FRIENDS and best BUDS for decades and decades.

Along with Buck, Jim, and Papa.

All of them from back in NWPA and WNY, and always maintained these friendships over the years!

After retirement and into our senior years ( which we are now well into) –

We wanted to golf!

Not all the time –

But every couple of weeks.

We mostly golf with friends we have made or are long-time friends!

Now – today – living in Cameron Woods Community-

We are right in the middle of over 30 golf courses.

We mostly just play nine holes now –

Maybe dinner or just go home. MEMORIES FROM THE PAST and into the present.

On Sunset Beach – a mile and a half walk from the last entrance to the beach-

Sits a mailbox called THE KINDRED SPIRIT!

Placed here four or five decades ago-

By two hippies who carried everything down the beach to install!

Over the years, it has been replaced and modified into a memorial to those two peace-minded spirits!

A journal is left inside and a pen to write your thoughts, prayers, or whatever comes across you mind.

A peaceful place to sit and watch the waves come in or gaze out to sea or over your shoulder-

The marsh and Cherry Point are in the distance from North Myrtle Beach.

A place to gather your thoughts and think back to the two hippies who thought to place this here!

Many PAST MEMORIES are here in this place!

PAPA’S WORLD – MEMORIES FROM THE PAST!

Papa’s World – A walk on the beach in the wind!

Our friends – Jayson and Ginger – just built a house some 40 miles from us –

On this day – he was back for work in NVA – and she came down for a visit and saw our two beaches!

Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach.

It was sunny – but also very windy!

So – we stopped at both beaches and Sherry and Ginger took short walks while I stayed at the

entrance to both beaches. Too windy for me! LOL

The beach at OIB – start of low tide – blue sky and a few white clouds – beach deserted!

At Sunset Beach on the West end – the marsh where there are fantastic sunsets –

this also is where the transition of Sunset Beach goes to Bird Island –

This area for the next 21/2 miles is all protected and where the “KINDRED SPIRIT” mailbox is!

A bird in the protected area.

Walking the beach on a very windy day is challenging at the best –

Me – I just wanted to stand and gaze at the beach and then head back to the parked car! LOL

But Ginger and Sherry braved the wind – took short walks and came back to the car.

Her family is buried there.

THOUGHTS – PICTURES and MEMORIES!

On the West end of Sunset Beach – onto what is known as Bird Island – sits the KINDRED SPIRIT

mailbox – for over 40 years – inside is a journal you can write your thoughts and words-

It is maintained by anonymous people and the journals are in a museum.

About a 2 1/2 mile walk from the pier.

THOUGHTS – PICTURES and MEMORIES.

Papa’s World – walking the surf of Sunset Beach-Bird Island to the Kindred Spirit mailbox.

Papa – Mike – Debby

Our family from Lake Holiday in Va. visited and we took them on a four-mile walk in the surf –

To the KINDRED SPIRIT MAILBOX and back!

This mailbox has been there for over 40 plus years.

Put there by a hippie and his girlfriend all those years ago.

Today – thousands of people every year walk to it – take out a journal and write their thoughts.

Those journals have been collected as historical and some are in a museum.

There are benches there and a driftwood piece with a plaque with his name on it.

One bench also has a plaque with a lady’s name and it calls her the KINDRED SPIRIT!

Sarah – Maddy and Ella – our granddaughters sitting on one of the benches while their father writes in the journal.

Looking back on Sunset Beach from the start of Bird Island.

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – 1.4 miles South from the last house on Sunset Beach – sits a mailbox – KINDRED SPIRIT – now going onto the middle of 5 decades

A large piece of driftwood sits on a sand dune just above the mailbox – dedicated to the man who put it there some four and one half decades ago – along with another hippie female friend.

We had read about this famous mailbox – several books have been written about it –

It is a 1.4 mile walk South on what is called Bird Island – an nature preserve –

located on the Southern half of Sunset Beach in N.C.

I am not sure if this is the other half – the lady friend of Frank – but this is one of two benches next to the mailbox – a place to sit and think and write your thoughts in the journal provided in the mailbox.
The large piece of driftwood with the plaque – overlooking the nature preserve – there are trails back in there to explore – walk in silence with only the breeze – the calling of the birds and the surf .
Papa – at the entrance to the benches and mailbox – waiting as another guest takes her picture.
I can not even imagine how all those years ago – they managed to carry everything here to install the mailbox!
The KINDRED SPIRIT mailbox and benches – this is maintained by persons unknown – has been all these years – and replaced many times as the old ones have slowly eroded away.
It is a lonely spot – yet so many people walk here everyday and leave there writings and thoughts –

throught the years – those journals have been preserved and are considered historical writings –

and are preserved in a museum! I do not know which one but I plan to find out.

The view behind the mailbox at the top of the sand dune – the nature preserve and in the distance –

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH – when on Sunset Beach – go South and I think at 40th. street – the end –

just find a place to park alongside the road – be sure your tires are completly off the pavement – and if a bike path off that also.

Then find the beach access and come to a sign at the beach – it tells you the distance to the mailbox and further down the beach – the jetty and the mouth of the river – where the Casino boats from Little River enter the ocean – going out to the International border line to gamble.
