Papa’s World – A look at the past!

Although we did not have a wooden screen door-

We had a porch where we could sit and watch the world go by on our main street house.

Our little town is called Eldred.

Had a main highway for a main street, and it went right by my front bedroom.

Often at night –

I would fall asleep with the window opened and one of those sliding screens in place.

The traffic would slow down after dark –

But it still was the main way to come-

From NYS to PA. and beyond.

My mother, after she was older –

And lost her second husband to heart problems-

My own father died of cancer when I was nineteen –

She would sit on that porch every day in good weather.

Folks would drive by and honk their horns –

And yell a “HELLO MARY” as they went by after rolling down their car windows!

That front porch –

I had countless times of sleeping out with friends –

I had an old Korean War sleeping bag that belonged to my brother-in-law Bill.

It was not warm and had no padding!

Pa., back there was cool in the evenings-

A dense fog would roll up and over the railroad tracks from the Alleghany River!

The grass was always wet in the mornings,

And the sleeping bag was damp with moisture.

We had and still do a 10 o’clock curfew –

All kids off the streets.

Part of sleeping out was raiding the many gardens all over town.

Eating apples from the trees.

Upon the hill, across the street from our house-

Was a hill covered in blueberries!

Summertimes – we would take broken down large cardboard boxes and slide down that hill!

That porch has held its secret for countless years of the conversations that were said there.

Now today –

A new front porch of our own.

A place I go to sit and wave or greet neighbors going by.

No screen door – no childhood memories here.

No curfew – no sleeping out at night.

Still, a bedroom for guests sits right there.

Now we have Deer alerts with motion detectors.

They go off when the deer approach the flowers.

They also go off if it is windy or if someone is walking by on the road in the dark. LOL

This front porch is what I wanted when we selected the model for our home.

I guess it might reflect back to my youth.

All those years ago –

And now today aging to our 80s.

Both were raised in small towns with COUNTRY all around.

For me, today is having that place where I am comfortable-

Waving and saying hello to those passing by.

FRONT PORCHES have a way of doing that to me.

Papa’s World – Good thoughts – the COLORS of flowers! DEER!

In our daily lives –

FLOWERS bring joy with our own eyesight!
Sherry and I – try as we might – display flowers.

These are not ours –

But in our new home near OIB-

It is a constant struggle with DEER!

Wherever we visit –

We both take many pictures of flower gardens.

The problem with DEER –

Is in our complete neighborhood!

They even come onto porches and eat the flowers!

So when we see flower arrangements in gardens –

There is a sort of envy because we just can not do that!

I have tried all sorts of sprays –

Different flowers that they won’t eat ( they still do)!

I once posted this problem on my social media page-

They gave me some ideas and said if that doesn’t work, then –

“EAT THEM”!!!! LOL

No – I will not hurt them –

So we do not plant –

As we normally would!

However,

I capture the places we have been –

Such as here at Epcot –

Wonderful displays of gardens with flowers!

Sherry in Winter Garden-

Our wishful thinking is captured now in memories with pictures!

Papa’s World – Looking back – some memories.

Living in NVA for 20 years – we became Washington Commanders fans!

We lived five miles from their headquarters and practice fields!

Many times in the season –

I would take a half-day vacation and go to those fields!

I could see players and coaches up close.

These are memories I shall always cherish from the past!

Six years ago – the day Maddy signed her letter of intent – to play soccer at –

The University of Lynchburg!

In her career, she made the all-conference third teams –

All-conference second teams.

And in her final senior year captain.

They won their way into the NCAA nationwide tournament two out of the four years.

Memories that will last the rest of my life!

The day we took Bode and Taylor by Metro into D.C. –

And visited the museum and THE PEOPLE’S HOUSE!

A replicate of the nation’s WHITE HOUSE!

Here is Taylor sitting at the President’s desk –

And Bode and MORMOR at the chairs for visitors!

I am sure that as well as I –

they will have this as a lifetime memory!

The little girl who since she was three years old-

loves Horses!

Today – she spends all her spare time at the barn!

Taylor rubbed the horse down before going out to the corral.

She would do this every day if allowed.

Taylor – creating lifetime memories!

Before we moved South – we golfed locally –

It was not unusual to have deer on the course with us!

A lifetime memory!

Today we are living in our sixth home together –

The last three we have had built!

We are in the warmth of the South making dreams come possible.

A lifetime of memories with our last home –

Here we shall be –

making more memories!

Volunteering for Sea Turtle Protection on OIB.

A memory we shall have as we grow older!

PAPA’S WORLD – LOOKING BACK – SOME MEMORIES!

Papa’s World – Cameron Woods Community!

We chose this Community after –

we had gone house hunting with a realtor –

We had viewed several houses – condos in the OIB area –

and had not found anything that didn’t require changes inside the homes!

We had instructed her to start looking toward the Leland area –

and then after she left –

I said to Sherry that I had seen a big sign promoting –

CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY =

and it was close by!

So – we drove a couple miles –

and turned into this sign you see above –

And the model was right there.

We went inside-

and introduced ourselves to the agent on duty.

We started looking –

and Sherry whispered to me “I LOVE THIS”!

And we asked what was available-

and she told us a woman had come in that morning –

and had withdrawn her down payment –

and a lot had just become available to be built on!

Today – this is the view from our driveway looking NE –

none of these houses were here.

That day we went and walked the lot –

She wanted an office-

and I wanted a front porch to sit on –

The office had to have doors and walls-

the front porch needed to be shaded-

and protected from rain.

This lot provided what we needed –

We had found what we wanted –

to put the deposit down –

and make selections!

The start of a nine-month journey.

A view to the NW from our driveway –

the first house to the right-

and straight across from it –

and the street continuing up –

were there – most not occupied.

They were in the final stages of being built.

The entire build was less than half built out –

it would take three years to build –

the last section near the front-

is just being readied as I write this.

Wildlife is abundant here –

Turkey – Deer – Aligators – Snakes – Bear – Squirrels – Rabbits –

Birds of all types –

and Coyote’s!

A Coyote was captured early in the morning walking the road.

We are watchful –

and learning to live with the wildlife.

We also have several groups of neighbors –

that form different engagement groups!

Groups getting together to socialize –

Group walking on the beach during wintertime!

Gatherings outside at local restaurants.

There also are many other groups for exercise –

playing board games or dice -dominos!

Neighborhood driveway get-together –

Parties and fire pits!

We are about a ten-minute drive to Ocean Isle Beach –

and fifteen minutes to Sunset Beach-

Here is a view of OIB from the Causeway Bridge-

going across to the island.

The beach entrance- bridge-

and the pier at Sunset Beach.

We choose wisely I think –

And now resales are beginning –

Most are for over $100,000 PLUS more-

then they paid just a couple years ago.

A wise investment –

But our future is here-

in our Golden Senior Years!

We are happy with our choice –

just three years ago,

PAPA’S WORLD – CAMERON WOODS COMMUNITY – OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C.

Papa’s World – “KEEPER” of the PLANTS!

It has been three-plus years since we moved into our new home in Cameron Woods Community!

We now live less than eight miles from the border of N.C. and S.C. in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

In every home we have lived in – we have done our own plantings – except here – the TREES!

We have had three small palm trees and two Crepe Myrtles planted –

We have kept all the bushes that came with the house except for three.

All the landscaping small stones – edging and large border bricks we had installed.

The rest – with Sherry picking them out – I installed myself.

At 75 years old – my days of digging by hand for planting trees have ended!

But – I still am the one who daily maintains the bushes – eight rose bushes –

numerous flowering bushes that come back each year.

Since Sherry had her Compound Fracture of her LI Vertrabrea –

It has become my sole duty to water – and move the flowers in and off the front porch daily –

because we have some very hungry DEER!

They have munched the neighbor to little stubs of once glorious flowers and plants!

I have sprayed all the bushes and plants and parts of our Tower Garden

( YES THEY ATE THE LEAVES AND FLOWERS OF THE CUCUMBERS AND TOMATOES)

With deer and Rabbit repellent – and they ate them anyway.

So now – in the morning I move all the moveable pots off the covered front porch –

back onto the flower beds and at night move them back onto the porch –

Keep your fingers crossed that the Deer will not come onto the porch!

With the Tower Garden – we have a Winter covering – that looks like a shiny metal blanket –

that allows Sun and Rain through – I cover in the late afternoon and take off in the morning!

So far = at this writing – I write way ahead – this has worked.

Sherry has come up with the nick-name of “KEEPER OF THE PLANTS” for me.

Here is a picture of me after I had moved all the plants back to their spots before church-

on Father’s Day!

Usually, these pots are full of bright colors – but at this time they are green as the Deer ate all the colors of flowers!

We decided not to buy more new plants – they are expensive-

And to nurse them back with Miricle Grow which I have been doing – the Deep Green –

tells me they are healthy –

Now – time will tell – the whole neighborhood has been hit by this small herd of Deer.

They even jumped several fenced-in yards – munching the plants.

So – as the “KEEPER OF THE PLANTS” I shall continue my daily regime –

And keep my sanity of golfing and hitting that perfect shot that brings me back time after time!

Nature in our backyard – Snakes and Turkey!

The open patio in the backyard with the protected tree line.

We have an enclosed lanai along with an open patio with a fire pit.

It does get really hot in the sun out in the open – but mornings are shaded and so are early evenings.

Papa sitting outback watching for snakes!
And I spotted the first of two that I have seen!

Needless to say – we are not happy with this – I spread snake-be-gone around and mow the grass short.

But – it is a protected area in the woods – and since I put down the snake-be-gone –

we have not seen anymore – but I warn the grandkids to watch what they are doing!

This one I later found out was not poisonous and as soon as I took the picture-

it turned around and very fast went back into the woods.

Then a few days after – two large turkeys and little ones crossed the yard as I sat out there!
I was sipping my coffee and all of a sudden they came from between the houses.

We have also seen them down by the pond!

At night – deer will set off our motion light in the backyard as I will look out and see them.

We are only four miles from the beach – but it is real country.

One of the reasons we picked this area.

Papa’s World – Sunrise – warm day – Gators and Deer at the beach!

Sunrise in Cameron Woods – Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.

It was the start of a beautiful February day – warm sun – in the 70’s – clear skies!

We can see both the sunrise and sunset from the end of our driveway.

And yes – it does get somewhat cold and windy here – but then you get three or four days of

summertime back home weather!

In the high 60’s to mid 70’s – perfect days!

At the end of this street is a trail entrance that walks around the pond and through the woods.

I have only seen the one gator in here – but others have seen two and still other little ones.

It even has otters that have been seen and tons of turtles!

The gator sunning itself.

There seems to be an old raised farm road here – and the gator is always in this area.

I have seen long-legged birds stand here and it is not deep.

Weeds will grow up and out of the water.

The path is graded and is some 12 feet wide – it goes into the woods.

It is like black cinder stones and when you get into the woods –

is covered in orange pine needles!

I always watch for snakes and have only seen one large black snake on the path.

We turned around and went back the way we had come.

Now on the other end – it comes around the pond and there is marsh and water on the other side.

So – we watch both sides –

you can see where that gator or another one has come up and crossed the path!

This is just how it is living in this part of the South.

The parking lot for the pier at Sunset Beach, N.C.

There were three deer there and one went into the bushes as I took the picture!

Those bushes and shrubs are thick and you could hear them as they went through.

I saw a picture someone took of a big buck coming out of the surf under the pier!

I have never seen them this close and they blend in really well with the landscape!

We also have seen a large flock of Turkeys back in Cameron Woods –

and I got pictures of them.

My car is a hybrid – so it makes very little noise when you are going slow.

I was able to get to about twenty feet from them!

Large birds and just disappeared into the trees.

EVERY MORNING!

It was a beautiful day – sun – wildlife – warm and a fine beach day for walks.

PAPA’S WORLD on OHAU!

Papa’s World – Living with kids before we left – vagabonds – traveling!

Here we are – in our early ’70’s – homeless – living with daughters –

until we pack up and head South

to North Myrtle Beach S.C.

First thing we do as vagabonds – is play some golf!

We made it a point – have fun – play golf – and enjoy the warm weather while we can!

Here we played one of our favorite courses in NVA!

Deer are everywhere – and are so tame – even when you hit toward them

they do not move!

You have to be pretty good to hit them and we are not good! LOL

Our view from youngest daughter and husbands home!

We would have almost three months to wait before we left –

pack up and go –

to a place we had never been and found by accident

OCEAN KEYES – North Myrtle Beach

every day a 1/2 mile walk to the sand and water of the beach.

First – we had to downsize – made dozen of trips to the Salvation Army – sold almost 95% of our household furniture with the house ! And got ourselves a storage unit – one big enough to walk in and through all our “STUFF”!

I thought I would MISS STUFF but I don’t!

I have moved on – just as we were about to do!

But first saying our goodbyes – these are what I will miss – FAMILY!

You never get use to that – WHEN YOU THROW IT AWAY – REMEMBER THERE IS NO AWAY!

That is why we are back home for the Christmas time – for three weeks!

And we will come back again in late Feb. and early March.

They will come down to visit –

And our life will go on!

We will walk once again with them – we will share laughs – and in Jan. hope will bring them to us!
We will meet up once again with old friends – laughing – exploring –
And true to form – PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING! LOL!
ICE CREAM and a SMILE!
This one texts or calls everyday her MORMOR & PAPA!

FAMILY – fun times and memories made –

FUN TIMES and memories to be made!

NEW ADVENTURES AWAIT FOR THESE TWO – as we a\have traveled the World together and now they live only 40 miles from us!

Our friends of many years – Buck and Cindy – have lived down in N.C. for years

and now – we golf every week together.

Family is back home – friends are here!

Yes – the Sun set of a family home – the night before we left – rain shower cleaning the roadway – vagabonds!

We are blessed to have these places to stay –

and now – we have begun our new home build

and once again – it will become a FAMILY HOME!

Once again in the South – we will be together – family – as always – you never throw that away!

Papa’s World – before we leave – one last time!

I said to my son in law –

“Sherry made tee times – 4:00 PM. Do you and Tammy want to play”?

And so it was – as we get ever so closer to leaving –

We went to Algonkian Golf Course –

among the deer once more!

This time not as many – but there were a lot of deer – just driving into the course

We discovered this course last year after living here for 21 years!

Only by accident as the kids went together and bought us gift cards

to golf at the County Golf Courses!

There are three of them – and we had played the Brambleton Coures

just a mile from our home.

The other one was a good hour away

but this one was 30 minutes away and near our church.

They said yes – and we went on Monday afternoon – labor day!

It was not crazy busy – and we actually got to tee off early.

What a fun time – Sherry said she loves this course.

This was our third time to play it.

Once last year with Buck and Cindy –

then a couple weeks ago with Jayson and Ginger

and this time with Tammy and Marcus.

Marcus about to hit his second ball

This course is a regular links course – but very flat –

trees everywhere – and narrow fairways – and “DEER”!

I was within 10 feet of two deer grazing

They are very tame and are in packs –

They are laying down or just in the high weeds.

They are by the greens or tee boxes.

They are not afraid and this whole area is a public park.

There is a walking path that runs right through the golf course

with hundreds of people walking – running or biking.

Social activity is abound here.

We both seem to play well here – as the fairways are very narrow

but run right next to the next fairway –

separated by dozens of mature trees!

Each tee box has five different tee’s.

Marcus and Tammy

If you hit the ball short and straight

you tend not to get into trouble

I have slowed my swing down

and found that I am mostly down the middle some

175 to 200 yards.

Sherry is consistent – 125 to 150 yards.

If I line her up correctly she hits where she is aiming!

Being in control is where it is at for us in golf!

Our closest friends for over 38 years.

Soon – I am hoping when we go South

We shall once again join up with our old friends to golf.

After all – we have been doing this for years and years.

Sherry and the deer

But ALGONKIAN GOLF COURSE will always have a soft spot in my heart.

Just like back home in NWPA Kane Golf Course has a place.

Papa’s World – a little golf and a lot of deer!

We went golfing with friends Ginger and Jayson

to the county course called Algonkian Public Golf Course!

It is a 18 hole course and we only played the front nine

but there are literally herds of deer!

I counted sixteen on one hole with two bucks in velvet!

They were so tame they would not move as you hit the ball

or drove up in the cart to find your ball.

Everywhere you looked there were deer.

And there is a county walking path that comes right through the course.

There were a ton of people walking – running and biking –

right through the deer!

They also were bedded down in the weeds and tall grass.

Some hard to see – and unless they got up –

you did not know they were there!

They never moved as Sherry hit her ball!

It is really a very pretty course running by the Potomac.

It is a county park – with the golf course right in the middle.

The course is flat with a lot of trees –

and very well kept up –

and in really good shape!

Sherry had tow pars!

And this was one of them!

Jayson teeing off

You can not see but the fairway was full of deer!

This is close to where his ball ended up

They never moved even when we drove up!

We both would like to go back as we played this last year

with our friends from N.C. Buck and Cindy!

PAPA’S WORLD – A little golf and lots of deer!

Papa’s World – When friends golf – win or lose – a great day

Last weekend – our friends stopped in on their way home from WNY –

We planned this out –

We made twilight tee times – for Friday at 3:00 PM.

The challenge was once again on –

GALS VS. GUYS – NO STROKES GIVEN – they are too good !

GOOD MORNING

Now – we have done this many times before –

and it almost every time is a close match –

And it was also close this time –

Cindy and Sherry

Our friends – Cindy and William ( Buck ) McBride –

we have traveled the World together since we were neighbors

32 and 1/2 years ago.

In five weeks – we leave and fly to Northern California

Where we will meet up and tour for ten days !

Alogonkin Park Golf Course

The course is about twenty minutes from our home.

And there are Deer on every hole !

Buck teeing off

It was very hot out – 94 degrees – but by the second nine –

A breeze and shade –

Cindy teeing off

As I said no strokes are given – they do not need them –

if you do – they will kill you –

As it was – we beat them by ONE STROKE !

SHERRY

The second nine – we won by two strokes !

Tom

BUT – the difference was two reasons –

We ONE putted SEVEN greens –

and they THREE putted FOUR greens !

That is why we give them NO STROKES !

If we gave them strokes

All in all we had a grand time –

Cindy and friend
A lot of wild life
Cindy

Looking forward to our trip in August –

We beat them – but had we not putted –

it would of been different –

But that usually is the way it goes.
