Papa’s World – A look at the memories!

When we lived for nine months in Ocean Keyes in North Myrtle Beach –

We attended a night of music at the Beach club known as “THE SPAINISH GALLON”-

Right on the beach and main street of NMB!

The band was “JIM QUICK AND COASTLINE”!

Little did we know that this band is a fan favorite up and down the N.C. and S.C. beach coast!

NMB is the home to “SHAG DANCING,” which started there in the 1940s!

The high water tower has a painted picture of a couple doing “THE SHAG” as it is known.

The dance has a national competition for both adults and young adults!

Four times a year –

A week of dancing is sponsored in the many clubs along the beach.

The band “ALABAMA” had a hit song in the 90s-

Called “SHAGGING ON THE BOULAVARD” that crossed the charts as a major hit!

All based on the “SHAG” dance up and down the COASTLINE!

During one of those festivals –

Outside of “FAT HAROLDS” on NMB mainstreet-

We came across this truck and a tent booth selling both long sleeves and short sleeves shirts-

Of the BAND JIM QUICK AND OOASTLINE” –

Which, since we saw them that first time, we have followed.

YES – I BOUGHT A LONG SLEEVED SHIRT –

And Sherry bought a short-sleeved shirt with “FAT HAROLDS” dance club on it!

Once a week at this club, which you enter through what looks like a JUKE BOX-

Are lessons for the public – cost Ten Dollars a person –

And you learn how to “SHAG DANCE”!

The dance requires you to maintain contact with your dance partner the entire time.

It is a beautiful thing to watch and so graceful.

TRUE – TRUE and TRUE! LOL

We took our daughter and granddaughters to “FAT HAROLDS”!

Inside “FAT HAROLDS” and sitting beside the dance floor.

It is like stepping back into history inside the building –

Which has been operating since the 60s!

Almost always, folks are dancing here!

Main Street of North Myrtle Beach –

Spanish Gallon and the radio station 94.9 – THE SURF – sits to the left of the Arch.

Here we are just past FAT HAROLDS, and DUCKS sits right across the street, and up from that is DECKERS.

There are more clubs –

This intersection is shut down on I think Thursday nights and live music from the Arch with bands-

The whole street becomes a parking lot for golf carts and hundreds of folks sitting in lawn chairs.

” A LOOK AT THE MEMORIES”!

Papa’s World – When family visits!

They came for a long weekend –

Debby and her two daughters – Sarah and Ella.

This was back for Spring Break –

Ella at college (she has graduated)

and Sarah from H.S. ( she has graduated)

They came,

and one of the things they wanted –

They wanted to visit Vareen Gardens –

Which has paths along the ICW-

Here they are hunting seashells to hang from trees-

Which thousands of people do “TO MAKE A WISH”!

Here, they pose in front of a tree –

We always have folks and family pose here!

Ella and Sarah are looking at the Marsh-

and the ICW –

from a swing in a small park at Vareen Gardens.

This is such a peaceful place to spend time just doing nothing!

But we were done here and ventured South to North Myrtle Beach.

At North Myrtle Beach –

We walked around so they could shop and look for bargains.

And had lunch at BOUYS!

Then we took them to “FAT HAROLDS”!

This is a dance club right in the middle of town.

THE SHAG started in NMB-

at clubs along the beach –

And this was the early 40s.

It became known nationwide as

“CAROLINA BEACH MUSIC”!

So for 80 plus years –

National competitions have been held in NMB –

and this club is the main one for “SHAGGERS” –

from all over the country.

They have events every three months,

and the whole town participates.

FAT HAROLD was a real person –

and passed away before the Pandemic.

The tradition continues,

and 80 years of history is contained inside.

The band ALABAMA even had a top hit –

“SHAGGIN’ ON THE BLVD” in the 90s.

When you walk through “THE JUKE BOX” front doors –

You walk back in time –

Everyone was very friendly –

And talked to the girls.

Sherry and I hung out here –

when we spent nine months at a condo-

In Ocean Keyes – a half-mile walk.

The history of “THE SHAG” is something I like to share –

with family and friends.

Thanks for reading,

and as always, HGD!
