Papa’s World – Memories are pictures!

This white church sits on a hill –

called Mount Nebo –

And that is the name of this Lutheran church in Mount Jewett, Pa.

This is the original Swedish Lutheran Church in that town-

and where Sherry’s parents are buried along with many other family members.

Although we have a lot there –

we will not be interred there –

We have purchased a vault –

in a Columbarium at Saint Luke’s Lutheran Church –

less than six miles from our home in OIB.

We will be cremated and interred there –

So that the survivor can come and visit.

The above church was built

by the Swedish immigrants –

of the community in the 1800’s.

And is replicated from

an existing church in Sweden.

Unique in that it is an EIGHT-SIDED BUILDING!

Several pews inside are accessed from the ends only –

as a support beam comes down from the ceiling-

to the floor-making-

it is all but impossible

to either slide through or walk through.

Services are held here on certain dates throughout the year-

and this is considered a historical building.

The cemetery completely surrounds the church-

except for the driveway up the hill

and around the church.

We have attended many services here

and some have been in Swedish.

This is a picture of a memory

from Sherry’s hometown of Mount Jewett, Pa.

This is the walkway from the community center on Ocean Isle Beach

by the sand volleyball court!

We have seen this cat numerous times in the past three or more years.

It lives somewhere near this building!

Looking back the walkway to the Community Center of Ocean Isle Beach!

We know people come here

and feed this cat as we have been here

when they put the food out.

As you can tell – it looks well-fed.

I did not even know it was around

until Sherry looked back to the center

and said the cat was following us.

It continued past us and down a few steps

and sat down where I took the picture.

This also is where other people have fed it.

Sherry continued down to the surf

and I stayed up on the walkway by the cat.

It was a somewhat mild late January day –

overcast in the late afternoon –

Hardly anyone on the beach –

mid-50s

after some harsh cold days

after the snow and ice storm had melted.

The cat started to meow

as I stood there

and soon disappeared over to the left

and the top of this dune.

I looked away and when I looked back –

it was gone.

There are many feral cats –

we have some at Cameron Woods Community.

This one seems to enjoy the beach life.

I’ve looked to see where it might live –

but who knows –

there are many foxes around

so I imagine it to be somewhere high-

so as not to be in danger.

MEMORIES IN PICTURES!

Papa’s World – Watching boat parade at the Links Of Brickyard Landing.

This is our view on the ladies’ tee box on number 18 at The Links at Brickyard Landing Golf Course.

We set our chairs up just as the sun went down and the full moon was coming up in the opposite direction.

It was chilly and we had blankets with us – some drinks – and just enjoyed the night sky waiting for the boats to come by!

The full moon was in the East and it was in this direction that the boats would come down the ICW!

We turned around, faced the West, and were greeted by a fantastic sunset!

The sun was almost down as we waited – I did not get pictures of the boats as it was dark and I was not sure they would turn out!

The waiting time was cold as the entire East Coast had cold weather.

But we braved it out and saw 12 boats come by all decorated out and numerous others that were not!

Sherry – our neighbors Diane and Steve – the Sun is almost set!

PAPA’S WORLD – WATCHING BOAT PARADE AT THE LINKS AT BRICKYARD LANDING!!!!!!

Papa’s World – walking the East end of OIB for sunrise with friends from N.H.

Our friends – Bob and Pam came in their RV to a campground near us for a four-day visit.

On the last full day here – we all got up before dawn – we stopped by to pick them up –

and we went to Ocean Isle Beach to the far North East end – to see the sunrise.

The weather had changed – a hurricane was coming into Florida and a cold front had arrived!

The beach was deserted – lonely – awaiting the storm to come through in a couple days.

The sunrise starts on a cold gray morning and an almost deserted beach.

We should have done this! LOL, It was breezy and cold.
This would be as good as it would get – time to go!
Bob Papa Pam Sherry – I want warm weather!

Now, this is more like it! LOL

Thanks for reading Papa’s World – not saying goodbye old friends – but until we meet once again – LATER!

Papa’s World – And it was 10 degrees below freezing -“BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE – NO HEAT”!

Papa watching Saint Bonaventure basketball – the furnace quit!

It happened two days in a row and the temps were in high teens and low twenty’s –

cold for this far south – seven miles to the border of S.C.

The thermostat went blank – the furnace quit –

and we immediately dug out the two electric liquid heaters we kept from back north.

We had decided to not get rid of these when we downsized!
While they are electric – they are safe – the liquid inside ( oil ) heats up and radiates the heat – and are not hot to the touch to burn you.

We had these for heat back north and we are going to use them in the lanai when we enclose it.

That will become a four-season room – 11 x 12.

So -when this happened we plugged them in and they kept a constant 65 degrees temperature in the entire house!

We have had ICE and SNOW in the last two weeks and now it is in the ’60s!

We are still under warranty and we called in – they had someone there within three hours both times.

At first, he could not find anything – and ran diagnostics –

there was a blown fuse on the unit up over the garage –

this is what cut the low voltage current to the thermostat.

Once he replaced that – he tried to get it to burn the fuse out again – nothing!

At that time we had been having lights flicker the past two weeks –

this was because of the ice storm and the little snowstorm.

So we thought that was the problem and he suggested we contact the electric company

and have a surge protector installed.

Then the next day it happened again!

No lights had flickered!

We called it in again and he showed up again within two hours!

The company who services our heating and air.

This time while he was there – he replaced the fuse and it started – then it popped the fuse –

It was the unit outside that when it started -it had a vibration –

so he opened it up and found a wire that moved and rubbed against a spacer –

causing it to short out!

It only happened at certain times and he was there when it happened!

Cold outside!

Everything was replaced – the wire tightened – so it does not vibrate – and we are fine.

ALL COVERED UNDER WARRANTY!

Papa’s World – Our first SNOW in Cameron Woods – Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. RARE!

SNOW! The week prior – ICE – IT IS FOLLOWING ME!

I seem to be the person if it is going to happen – it will happen to me.

This is very RARE here this close to the ocean so I am told.

And to be fair – within an hour or so – it was gone!

Looking out the lanai at the snow on the ground and swirling in the air.

Now – really – I could care less if I ever see snow again – some people think that is nuts –

but I just do not like the snow-ice and cold – and I lived in WNY & NWPA for 50 years!

So I know all about blizzards – running my van up and down the driveway to pack it down –

Shoveling – chipping ice – burning 21 cords of wood hand carried inside and to the basement for the woodstove – that stove kept us warm through one week without electricity – and power –

that plus the living room fireplace –

going to work at 5am. through unplowed roads and a foot of fresh snow and another foot on the way.

The Tower Garden all covered up and survived all the ice – snow and cold.

I think it is so pretty coming down – covering in white – but that is my extent of liking it.

Back North – we would go cross-country skiing – in the Alleghany National Park on groomed trails.

As a kid, we were always outside sledding – building forts and snowball fights.

My memories are in the past – my present is NO SNOW! LOL
Lonely birdfeeder with no birds in the snow.

As I said – it was over in an hour – sunshine and no snow anywhere – the WHY we moved South.

The Sun is back – the air still cool – the roads dry – NO ICE – NO SNOW!

Diane – Sherry, and Papa – walking after the snow – in the sunshine and cool air!

Papa’s World – our very first RARE winter ICE STORM – Cameron Woods – OIB – N.C.

One-quarter inch of ICE over everything!

Moving South to the border of N.C. and S.C. – we must have brought winter weather with us!

This is a very rare event in this part of the country and we were here to experience it!

It started raining the day before and by nightfall – the temps had dropped to freezing!

By morning it had gone down to 26 degrees!

that is cold down here!

Everything is covered in a coat of ice.

We knew it was coming and were prepared not to go out on that black ice!

We had flashlights and our generator if needed – but I did not want to go that far!

We were told to be careful with the garage door being ice shut!

DON’T WORRY – BE HAPPY!

We lost the electricity three times for short periods – the news the night before showed the electric

company bringing in some 200 personnel from the midwest to help out – and they were terrific!

Ice everywhere – the trees were coated!

Our Oleander plants – three of them – were bent right over – they survived!

Thank goodness we did not have the wind – no big trees came down or branches.

We dodged a bullet and when the sun came out – the ice melting on the trees

created a drizzle of steady raindrops.

The bushes and mulch are covered in ice.

We have had a cold wave that extends all the way South deep into Florida!

We were worried about our TOWER GARDEN – so I dug out our protective look like metal covering!

We had used this back in NVA but not with ICE!

The back patio – to the right – the covered TOWER GARDEN!

Our experiment to grow twelve months of the year continues!

This protective covering kept the plants – green leafy – safe – the pump kept running on a timer –

and we continue to grow our vegetables even through mid-twenty degrees and ICE!

The covering is perforated – absorbed the sun in the daytime and protects the veggies

during the low temps at night and the freezing rain.

Papa’sorld – While snow – ice and cold hit the East Coast – this is our Winter day!

Blue skies – green – sunshine and a cover on our Tower Garden.

Yes – it was chilly – 30 degrees – frost – and a little wind – but no ice – snow and frigid cold!

I can bundle up and have no fear of slipping on ice – no snow shovel.

No scraping ice off of car – yes – it got cold – but not what they had all up and down the East Coast.

Green still here in the trees in the back yard – bird feeder and three Oleander bushes waiting for Spring.

Our family all had the snow and ice – back home in NVA.

We still were able to go out and about – what I love about being here – the SUNSHINE!

Most days are like this – blue skies and Sun.

And we can golf – as long as it is not windy!
Early morning frost – sunshine and blue skies.

Living on the borders of N.C. and S.C. – never thought we would end up here – is just warm enough

in the Winter to make it bearable for me – and yes – it gets hot in the summer –

but I much prefer that to ice and snow in the Spring and Fall back in NVA and WNY!

Winter marsh – clouds – sunshine
