Papa’s World – Our patio – cool nights – relaxing with our Solo firepit – campfire on the patio.

In the world of camping – firepits – roasting marshmallows – I admit – I am not all that into it!

This was really my wifes idea – as she was growing up – camping – boating was what her family did.

I did all the normal young lad stuff – sleeping out under the stars( freezing in those NWPA nights.)

We sometimes had a campfire while on the hill sleeping out.

I was a scout and we did overnight camping in tents –

as a youth group counsler – we spent a week in the far northern Canadian Parks.

Canoeing and camping for a week with 14 young students – 7th – 12th. grade kids.

But it is not on my bucket list!

Sherry showed this picture to me – saying how would you like that on the new home patio?

It is called a SOLO STOVE – and once it gets going – smokeless!

It will burn more efficiently so it says – and is toasty warm to sit around with no smoke and sparks!

OKAY – I say – thinking there goes my couch – snacks and Netflix!

So now – we buy little bags of wood ( $$$$$$) and those little tiny firestarters!

I prefer those wrapped in paper logs that you light and they burn for like 4 hours! LOL

So now I am an official campfire sit-in back patio sort of guy!

I really did not expect this – and yes – once it starts – there is no smoke or sparks.

It does get toasty warm – so much so that sometimes you have to move back!

We have the perfect set up – almost sheltered on three sides – concrete slab – comfy chairs.

And when the family came – Marcus and Tammy and the three little ones ( I call them) we had a fire each night!

And they had SMORES!

We even went scaveger to find old dead wood in the woods behind and across the street!

Do you know when the tempature gets in the low 50’s – snakes become almost inactive?

Otherwise – that was a no-go for me!

I have been converted – I am a SOLO STOVE convert – basking by the firepit – no shoes – no socks and no problem!

Now – the patio concrete has been painted a slate gray ( I did that) two coats – and we have two small bags of wood to burn!

I still like the single wrapped in the paper log to burn for four hours which you can see here as a trial!

And – this SOLO STOVE is everything they say it was!

HHHHMMMMNNNN – ARE JELLO SHOTS NEXT?

I am now a firepit official starter –

” PASS THE MARSHMALLOWS HONEY –

PUT THE CHOCOLATE ON THE GRAHMCRACKERS ”

get ready for some warm toasty evenings –

BEDTIME IS STILL 8 PM. FOR ME!

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE!

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – Friends – last day – golf at The Valley – East port – dinner – SNOOKY’S – ocean

Sherry and Pam – about to start our golf adventure – Pam could not golf – still recovering from a achilles surgery

On their last full day – Bob wanted to play golf – we last played together I would guess 1965 or 1966!

A very long time ago – and he had their clubs in the RV but had not used them all winter.

Pam – who was still recovering from surgery on her heel – would do the driving and Bob rode with me.

Bob and I went to school together from grade one to grade twelve.

They have wintered the last two seasons in their RV – this time it was in Florida.

They made it a point to stop here on their way to family in Nashville before heading home in N.H.

Sherry and Pam
Waiting to tee off – we like this course which sits right on Rte. 17 in Little River – S.C. It is a short course but fun to play. Sherry and I have golfed here alone and with friends.
Now – she hits it on the fairway most times – and every once in a while – will hit it just right and bingo – it goes a long ways – here is a 298 yard hole for her – and this is her drive!

When you play a scramble and her and Cindy hit from the women’s tees – it is good to have them both on your team!

After a good day of golf – we scrambled to a 44 on both nines – we took them to Cherry Grove to one of our favorite places to eat – “SNOOKY’S” on the Beach.

This has become our go to place to take visitors – food is good – and you sit ocean front just yards off the sand.

We have many – many memories of growing up together in a small town in NWPA – called Eldred.

Many adventures of sleeping out under the stars – roaming the streets after curfew at 10:00 PM.

Nothing bad – raid a garden or two – sneak some beer – campfire – canoe trips down the river –

playing sports together – proms – dances – joining the exployer’s together-

driving – family – both his and mine.

Bob and Sherry checking out the beach where we walk every day!
Pam and I a selfie while they discuss the beach!
Ending our day together – walking to the cars. Pam and Bob!

Papa’s World – Mother’s day – with friends at Calabash – OYSTER ROCK!

Toasting to MOTHER’S DAY with good friends – Bob and Pam and Sherry! CHEERS!

We had planed this little get together for some time now.

They had been in Florida for the winter in their RV.

Moving around down there and then working their way back North.

They were in a campground eight miles from the condo’

So for three whole days – we gave them a tour – but the first day was Mother’s Day.

After their arrival we went down and joined them – sitting around – talking – and we stopped and brought them salads.

Then it was for a very quick walk on the beach where they were camping!

It was so WINDY – we took this picture and headed back to the campsite.

A lot of self control in not staying on the beach for a walk! LOL
The next day we picked them up – toured our new home and discovered the drywall had been installed!

Here – we are at Oyster Rock on the ICW in Calabash N.C. where we had reservations for dinner.

A walk along the boardwalk outside of Oyster Rock – here is where the fishing boats return with their catches!
Charter and fishing boats – they provide fresh catch for these places – including Oyster Rock – on their menus.
Fresh catch – Flounder – broiled!
Fresh catch – Mahi-Mahi! Catch of the day!
And of course – down here – HUSH PUPPIES!
Pam Sherry Papa Bob – a wonderful Mother’s day dinner with good friends!

Papa,s World – a visit to River-walk in Conway S.C. – water so black !

Entrance to River-walk in Conway S.C.

Sherry has a friend from back in NVA who also owns a home just outside Conway.

She told us we had to visit this town as it has large living Oak trees

and a historic part with a River-Walk!

The walk is along this river – known local as THE BLACK RIVER!
While these pictures do not show just how black this water is – you could see nothing!

I tried to see into the water – but it was black!

I guess there is a chemical released from the Cypress trees that line the banks –

that leaches into the water – turning it a almost black color!

It just gave me the creeps not knowing what or if anything is in there!

The trees and bushes were really beautiful as was the new walk way!

From all the rain they had – flooding of the River-Walk!
A portion of the walk was under water – making it so we had to find a way around it!
Geese swimming in parts of the park under water! You can see the water mark on the base of the trees!

We also came across a marina – with docks and boats – this area seemed to me – to be like a campground for boats! There were a number of boats with people living on them and they looked to be in pretty rough shape! I would not want to take them out onto the river. There was bathrooms here so I assume the people used them to bath etc.

These are some of the better looking ones – some were decorated outside for Christmas – others had lawn chairs and some had just things laying around!

Papa’s World – what happened 50 years ago- well if we can remember – we talk about it !

Childhood friends – grade school – sleep overs –

getting to know their parents – the trouble we did not get into

the trouble we did get into –

When friends stop by –

You try to remember all the above –

and then – you get tired and say goodnight –

Those fifty some years went by way too fast !

Pam Bob Sherry

We grew up together in a small town in NWPA –

Six miles from the NYS border –

Where the drinking age was 18

where we lived it was 21 !

But that was later –

first we had to ride our bikes –

go to the park – hang out –

We had to be kids !

Bob Tom

Today – like two old men – we hang out on the corner and talk.

My -how those years have changed us !

But some things never change – friendship – trust

and old stories refreshed –

four friends from the past

riding through a path with pine trees

in a odd car called the NSU PRINCE !

You would of had to be there –

It was a funny moment for us.

The RV and car

Today they are retired just as we are

starting out on a six month journey

first South to Gulf Shores

and then West to Arizona

Thanks buddy for stopping

50 plus years is a long time

now I have one more memory to cherish

Oh – by the way – we did use that 18 years old drinking age for NYS !

But those are stories and memories best kept to ourselves !

Papas World – Beach 2 at Lake Holiday!

New homes built across from beach 2

Our daughter and her family live at Lake Holiday in Cross Junction Va.

When we visit – instead of going to beach one

we head to the less crowed beach two.

The beach here has less sand and more gravel

but once you are in – it is calm as there is a no boat wake

and it sits between two coves.

There are docks for boats and future marina – number 2 –

will go in around the corner –

there also is a camp ground but no utilities.

It is peaceful and quiet here with new houses that are beautiful.

Many boats will come into the cove –

and tie down and float and raft and swim.

This is a man made lake of about 227 acres with a dam.

It is a gated community with 3 beaches –

Beach 3 is off grid tent camping and where they set off the fireworks.

Beach one has the community center and large events building.

The beach there is also way bigger and all sand.

Papa’s World – Cross Junction Lake Holiday – Va.

There is a place in the quiet countryside of Va.

A place on route 522 –

South of Berkley Springs –

North of Winchester Va.

Lake Holiday –

GOOD MORNING

Our daughter and family have called this home for thirteen years !

We actually had a house built there

but sold it –

as it would of been too far to drive !

Lake Holiday and dam

The lake itself is not huge – around 227 acres –

But it does have three beaches –

with WHITE SAND !

Most boats you see are Pontoon boats –

But power boats are also there.

Power boat towing

There is a very large clubhouse and also a Marina –

Where there is a waiting list for slips.

Beach Two

There are several sand volleyball courts on the two main beaches –

The third beach is somewhat secluded

and used mostly to set off fireworks – fishing –

or a destination spot for boats to anchor and swimming.

Beach one

Beach one is the main expanse of beach –

All events are held there and at the clubhouse-

which has a huge outside deck wrapping around it.

It covers underneath it for events in case of rain

and the boat marina is right there also.

Beach one looking toward the dam

There are hundreds of houses situated all around the lake

And at one time had a 18 hole golf course

where a host of homes still exist on the open fairways.

Almost all the streets are named in connection with the course.

Beach two

Beach Two contains camp grounds – play ground – volleyball court.

And is much more quiet and a place to dock up to three boats

On a floating dock system.

Swimming area
beach two

A no wake zone for all the beaches and coves exists

And the entire lake is protected by a security force.

There is a guard shack with gate lifts that you must stop and be checked out

You have to provide ID and must be called in by a owner

in order to be admitted

The entire area is monitored 24 / 7 365 days a year.

Beach tow with floating boat slip and dock

All in all – it is a very nice quiet community –

when lakefront homes do come up for sale

They generally go very fast.

There still are homes being built although most are off the lake.

Beach three side is mostly undeveloped –

Mainly because no infrastructure exits on that side of the lake.

Although you can purchase lots –

people then build decks – docks and use it to dock their boats.

Fall along the lake

This is a four season area in the Shenandoah Mountains

Although most Winters it does not freeze entirely.

This is a little bit about a quiet place

A place we have been visiting for thirteen years

Where our three oldest grand daughters live

LAKE HOLIDAY – CROSS JUNCTION – Va.
