Papa’s World – More moments in TIME!

Here is a view of Eldred. Pa. in the 1900s.

In the middle, the upper is a white church that I bought and made into apartments in the 80s.

In the middle of the picture to the right –

Is the baseball field without the tall telephone pole lights,

Or the basketball and tennis courts.

To the left,

The middle is the area where the elementary school was built –

I attended the fifth and sixth grades.

Beyond the mountains in the upper middle is NYS!

I lived just a couple of houses down on the left side of the white church.

Left center is a large brown building known as Walker’s Machine Shop.

A path ran on the other side through tall pine trees –

and came out into the backyard of my grade-high school buddy, Bobby!

The hill to the right I called BLUEBERRY HILL, and would take cardboard-

And slide down the hill.

It changed from this to what I remembered growing up!

But here is a look back in time before I was born!

A much earlier view of Eldred, Pa., from a different angle.

The Alleghany River runs through the flat land with trees –

And flows North into NYS until it finally turns South-

To Pittsburgh, Pa.

Twice in my early years –

I canoed down that river –

Once with a group that was called THE EXPLOYERS-

An organization beyond the Boy Scouts!

And a second time with our church youth group.

Growing up, it seemed every Spring brought a flood from that river.

Then after the ’72 flood-

Improved flood protection was put in by the Army Corps of Engineers.

I believe this solved the flooding problem.

Growing up, this was the school, grades 1 through 12.

I went four years here, and my last class was on the bottom floor-

I think the set of windows to the left – fourth grade.

I walked from the North end of town to here.

A mile, perhaps?

The HS kids were on the upper floors.

Many fond memories in this building.

Recess was out front, playing in the huge yard with large trees.

The Oak Hill Cemetery was beyond this building on the other side.

And I can remember riding sleds in the snow down that hill.

These are MORE MOMENTS IN TIME FOR ME!

Papa’s World – Just another day in my life.

COMING TO A END

Here it is almost 1/3 the way through November

The leaves are coming down –

it is chilly at night

and once again it is time to pull the flowers for storage.

I remember my youth –

Fall was hunting season –

I only ever shot one thing in my entire life.

A Rabbit – and it did not die right away –

instead dragged itself along the ground –

I stepped on its hind legs

and it screamed !

That was it for me –

no more hunting –

Sometimes you just
find a corner
and observe
what is happening
around you !

Fall also is the time you get ready to rake and rake

Bags of leaves to be picked up on Tuesday trash days.

That is the day they pick up yard waste.

I usually end up with at least twenty bags of leaves !

Fall’s in my youth –

riding my bike until early dark

sometimes neighbor hood KICK THE CAN !

The neighbor hood on North Main Street

was full of kids.

Games were every day or just hanging out.

The saw mill up the street with a huge pile of saw dust.

The apple trees and chucking apples at the train as it passed.

Sleeping out on the porch – going inside when it became too cold.

Walking down town to the Texaco to see who was hanging out !

Memories of the mind –

Sometimes you wonder

WHEN WILL I FORGET ?

And then there is MARLEY – the Golden Doodle –

She is such a gentle dog – letting the kids dress her up!

Bode at Top Golf – he has the form and is still nine years old!

Bode – Taylor and Cassidy – when they were small – now they are teenagers and Bode is soon to be ten years old!

Here is Bode at his tryout for travel Soccer on the left- doesn’t seem possible that he soon might be playing travel soccer!

MARLEY – YOUNG GRANDKIDS AND FAMILY DOG – PAPA’S WORLD!!!!!!

Papa’s World – stop at CROOKED HAMMOCK then onto the PELICANS baseball game!

At the Pelicans baseball park in Myrtle Beach.

We decided at the spur of the moment to buy tickets – got great seats just to the right behind home plate

and take in a minor league ball game.

When we lived in NVA – we often went and saw the Nationals play in D.C.

Now – I normally do not watch baseball on TV unless it is my team I follow.

But – minor league to me is different – full of little games between innings.

The cold beer and peanuts – a slice of pizza or a hot dog.

At Crooked Hammock in Barefoot Landing before the game.

But first, we stopped at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach –

at one of our favorite places – CROOKED HAMMOCK!

This is a brand new brewery – perhaps opening a little over a year ago.

They sold beer out of a little RV trailer while consturction was going on to complete the brewery.

We like it here and stop in every so often – this time to buy a hat for our son-in-law

who requested one.

He had bought one when they visited us and wanted a new one.

So – we left early and stopped before the game.

The mascot for the Pelicans.

The divisions and teams in this minor league system.
View from our seats – $20.00 got us great seats.

Just a little time out and away from home – worth the money and a good time for a few hours.

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World – with family at the Durham Bulls Triple AAA baseball game!

What a nice baseball park in Durham N.C.

It was Casey’s birthday – we went boating and now to watch the baseball game!

It turned out the crowd size was announced at 8400 fans!

That is quite a crowd for a minor league game.

It had all the things you see in a minor league game with between innings entertainment!

They got the fans involved by having different contests – the scoreboard was fantastic and had another one in right field.

The man here was adjusting cameras for the scoreboard and we sat right on the third base line!

Radar from Mash – one of my favorite TV shows.

PAPA’S WORLD

Papa’s World-Growing up Eldred Pa. – part Six.

GOOD MORNING

Eldred – a small community situated by the Allegheny River

Among the rolling hills know as the old mountain range

” The Allegheny Mountains “

I wrote a blog a short while ago –

about the title before there was ” STAND BY ME “

There was Eldred –

where everybody knows your name.

Bob – me ( Tom ) – Greg – Mike – John – Sully – Gerry – Gus and Pat

We were friends – we were buddies –

we had each others back

And we once took a little trip down that river .

Canoeing the Allegheny River
I believe our Sophomore year

Our little group grew and grew –

We were part of a national group known as The Exployer’s !

Raising money for our trips –

Staying out of trouble –

Almost all of my buddies belonged

And the younger kids started to follow.

Me – number 65

We played sports –

we were not into trouble –

we did not smoke – which back then was a big deal !

A few who did got kicked off the team.

We lived – played and grew up in a small Western Pa. town

close to the South Western New York border

where every one knew your name

In all the years before – and the years since –

The faces have changed –

the names also –

but to this day it remains

North Main Street

The little town – where every one knew your name

South Main Street

Of ELDRED PA .
